The hard-edged title cut kicking off this disc suggests that Kasey Chambers might be exploring an entirely different frontier than she did on her 2000 debut, The Captain, but the dozen tracks that follow are much more in line with the sparkling country-folk of her first album. That's good, because at this early stage in her career, there's no reason for Chambers to stray from her obvious strengths: simple but honest lyricism set to tastefully twangy instrumentation and spiked by her alternately sweet and sassy voice rising straight from the South (even if, in her case, it's South Australia). Various guest vocalists add breadth to the proceedings, with results that range from slightly disappointing (Lucinda Williams on "On a Bad Day") to effectively reflective (Paul Kelly on "I Still Pray") to wondrously evocative (Buddy Miller on "Runaway Train") to downright transcendent (Matthew Ryan on "Million Tears"). Mostly, though, it's Chambers's confidence and charm that shines brightly and clearly. --Peter Blackstock
Album Description
From one of the most acclaimed singer-songwriters to emerge in years, 'Barricades And Brickwalls' has already hit the top of the charts and is 1 1/2 times platinum in her native Australia. Wrapping her stunning voice around true-life stories, Kasey Chambers storms America's musical barricades and brickwalls with melody, emotion and wisdom. Warner Bros. Records.

Dead Ringers.......2006-10-19
Catch yerselves on! Kasey Chambers has been incredible for years!!! When yer done buyin' all her solo albums (And ye'd BETTER!) go find the Dead Ringers stuff she did. I love Lucinda and Emmylou, but I'd take Kasey any day. I promise ye won't be disappointed!
Australian Country!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-01-31
I was a little reluctant i must admit, yeap! i know theres cowboys in Australia and i know theres a lot of simmilarityes between USA and the land downunder, i tought maybe she had that country spirit but she would have a Paula Cole/Tricia Yearwood hibrid style, but Casey performance is brilliant!!! and you can swear she was raised in Texas or Arkansas or Alabama, perhaps Tennesse , Miss Chambers sounds very American, very, very American old fashioned country, such as in 40s, 50s,60s and 80s (i consider her style skips the 70s i dont know if im wrong) "barricades and brickwalls" is an intense opening for this album, guitar sounds are really captivating and is the most dramatic track on this release, "not pretty enough" is a beautifull sad song, "crossfire" is my favorite track this song repressents the 80s influence and is the most "heavy" track the sound is so raw you feel you are inside a bar in the middle of a fight, "if i were you" is the most pop song in this effort, this album owns an amazing quality that you cant imagine untill you get it, Casey as you can realize for the cover have also certain sex appeal actually she have been voted and included into some men magazines countdowns FHM and Maxim for instance, so the whole combo worths, musical quality and beautifull presence.

Another great album.......2005-10-11
This woman just continues to blow me away. This, her second album, is every bit as lively & distinctive as her debut. She real is the best upcoming artist I've heard in a long time.
Bought all three.......2005-09-25
I bought this CD after seeing Casey Chambers in concert. Never heard of her before. I bought all three of her current CD's at once. Now I can just add on, when she releases her new CD later this year.
Improves on the debut.......2005-06-21
Aussie twanger Kasey Chambers put out a fine debut in THE CAPTAIN. On this one, she occasionally allows more breathing room for the guitars and dances closer to the rock end of the country-rock equation. Her voice is still the same marvelous childlike instrument (think Julie Miller) but she ups the songwriting a tad this time out. There are more tunes that lodge themselves insistently than with the first effort.
HIGHLIGHTS:
The disc kicks off with the brassy title tune, a declaration of intent as Kasey snarls "Iron bars and big ole cars/Won't run me out of town/I'll be d**ned if you're not my man/Before the sun goes down." She follows that up with the meek "Not Pretty Enough" leaving you to wonder which one is the "real" Kasey. Perhaps it's both..you get another dose of melancholy in "On a Bad Day" (Chambers' pal and backer Lucinda Williams guests on harmony) but on weeper "Little Bit Lonesome" (Chambers channeling Hank Sr.?) and "If I Were You" Chambers again insists that if her lovers don't "get" her, it's their problem. ("I'm only half of what you see...") "Crossfire" is an edgy rocker with Kasey this time playing the runaround romeo ("If you don't hate me, you'll learn to/I thought I had it clear from the start/I don't have a heart...") Perhaps the strongest track is the visceral "Ignorance" (hidden after track 13), as Chambers recoils from the world's evils. ("If you're not pissed off at the world/Then you're just not paying attention")
LOWS:
No real clunkers this time out, though "Runaway Train" sounds like a knockoff of the title track. She didn't really bring anything new to the Gram Parsons cover either. ("Still Feeling Blue")
BOTTOM LINE:
If you like alt country or Julie Miller, this is highly recommended. If you love traditional country (Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Johnny Cash) and you're looking for something new that "sounds old", you'd be well advised to give this one a listen.

One Short but Ohh Soo Good.......2006-08-09
This album provides some fine examples of why Procol Harum was high in the ranks of rock's elite in the late-Sixties spanning flawlessly into the early '70's. Opening with the the catchy hook's on "Simple Sister" followed by the album's lovely flowing three-quarter timed title song ample evidence of Brooker/Reid's writing abilities abound as well the on-occassion penchant for repetition. Trower's influence is apparent on the stright-up rocker "Memorial Drive" as it is his co-writing to a lesser end effect on "Song for a Dreamer", a tribute with strong Eastern stylings to his recently departed friend J. Hendrix and "Poor Mohammed" which could be a near comic yawner if not for the remarkable slide work. Returning to PH's conventional writing team, one can only remark of "Luskus Delph" that gad's this is beautiful from point of title, lyric and composition. From the simple but urgent drum opening of "Power Failure" and the guitar's answer to it's own siren call this song highlights a rare wonderful percussion center that is more than worthy of the over-dubbed audience applause upon conclusion. How does this group manage to get away with such on-occassion repetition? Because they can as few others are able. This being Trower's last effort with the group is it a true sign of the quality of his future solo efforts? Thankfully not. Is this 5th effort therefore the Last of the Great Procol Harem Albums? No, Grand Hotel was yet to come. Why are the Bonus Tracks a bonus? Because they are near repeats of a couple of the best cuts on the disc.
Great Procol and a killer recording.......2006-07-08
Having been in the music and recording business for
over 29 years this Procol album has not only killer
songs"Simple Sister "is a totally masterful recording that holds up and surpasses today's digital standards. You
have remember that this record was made with no computers or digital technology on a 24 track tape recorder!
I still listen to the layering on it and wonder how they did it
back in '71. Much of the credit should go their producer/ engineer Chris Thomas a true giant in the biz. Chris engineered or produced many great recordings most notably The Beatles, Pink Floyd's " Dark Side of the Moon",
all the Pretenders records and the list goes on and on.

A pretty-much over looked album for it's time.......2006-06-20
Rolling Stone's review in '71 all but gave them up for dead..Hard to imagine that!! In any event, I recall the day the album was played in it's entirety (without commercial interruption)for the first time on the "underground" radio station in Houston where I grew up. I skipped school that day with an acquaintance who had a hot "date" at 10:00 AM or so at this girl's parent's house. The two of them were getting busy upstairs as the album played, while I had more fun listening than they could possibly have, had they only slowed down and joined me 'round the Hi-Fi. We had all dropped some acid, and I was peaking along the same time when the first riffs from Robin Trowers' Strat' came through the speakers.. I was indeed entranced, and I sat there for what seemed an extended period of time, yet merely 40 or so minutes in reality.I can't quite recall the rest of that day, but what a great, over-looked project! I still love it today for the sparkling production, the lyrics, and above all, the almost hypnotic musicality of the whole thing..Not a wasted day of hookey at all, and well-worth it in the long run. I challenge any contemporary of mine at that time to come up with a better first heard scenario for say, "Sticky Fingers", or "Aqualung". Two albums released shortly after "Broken Barricades". Albums that are classics, yet not as unique in some ways as Broken Barricades is for me.

Danged Good Procol!.......2006-05-12
This is possibly my second favorite Procol album. "Grand Hotel" is my first. Though it has some of the hostility that was rife on the previous album, "Home", which I avoid like the plague, it also has some of the most interesting and innovative Procol songwriting on it. Robin Trower makes two significant contributions to the album, with "Song For A Dreamer" and the quirky "Poor Mohammed" and they are great! "Dreamer" is a very spacey sort of a thing, the sort of song that Procol isn't exactly known for producing. Supposedly, this song is a tribute to Jimi Hendrix, a musician that Trower has often been compared to. The lyrics are totally dream-like and ethereal in nature, but "Poor Mohammed" is completely different! This song puts Trower in storytelling mode, with that rough as pebbles voice of his delineating a day in the life of some poor immigrant schmoe as he wanders about a house. The guitar work sets a weird mood for the song. Very rough and tumble!
The "Home"-style hostility comes in with the two major Gary Brooker-sung rockers, "Simple Sister" and "Power Failure". Who is Brooker singing to on "Sister"? The lyrics are so hostile, it's scary, and I am taken back to "Still There'll Be More" from the previous album, a song which wrote the BOOK on hostility! "Power Failure" is less vitriolic, but nonetheless cooks with the same furor that "Sister" does. Other Brooker tunes on the album are so lilting and gentle as to almost be apologies for those two. "Luskus Delph", one of the other tunes, has some of the naughtiest lyrics you'll ever hear issue from a classical rock group. This is one song you'll NEVER hear played on a Clear Channel radio station!
Since they are more focussed on this album, the "madmen" sobriquet doesn't really seem to fit, despite the presence of "Simple Sister" and "Song For A Dreamer". The old Hieronymus Bosch flavor is gone, replaced by what now seem to be only complaints and stories. They also could have peaked with their madness on "Home", (and considering the tone of that album, there's a very good chance somebody had Brooker and Reid committed for their own good!) Instead of Honore Balzac, we have Stanley Kubrick now...not a bad tradeoff!
A must for any new fan of this seminal art-rock band...the band that, in fact, practically INVENTED art rock!

An Overlooked Gem.......2002-02-09
What a shame that this fantastic album never got the attention it deserved -- especially in the U.S. The album is especially noteworthy for the longer (and much better) versions of How Many Lies and Through the Barricades, both of which were issued in their single formats on The Best of Spandau Ballet. The ballad Swept is easily as gorgeous as anything from the True album, and Snakes and Lovers is absolutely infectious.
Classic Songs.......2002-01-29
This was a great comeback cd for the guys although it never really caught on in North America. Which is sad because the songs were ahead of its time.
Concept Album.......2000-01-23
Most people would remember Spandau's "True" as being definitive of the group, but I appreciate their ambition, as contained in Through the Barricades. Right from the opening introduction one gets the sense that the group is out to accomplish something different other than simply making a pop album. I won't want to single out any song for praise; not because they are lousy, but rather because they ought to be listened as a single "entity" with a thematic concern. Politically tinged perhaps, but the 80s could always spring such surprises.

Pretty Damn Good.......2004-07-06
I received as a gift the box set of all four Hooked On Classics CD's. As an avid fan of classical music, I was quite shocked to hear DRUMS in the background! I didn't really know what the Hooked On Classics series was, so I didn't know what to expect. As such, I eventually got used to the percussion, and found that I liked the fourth CD the best of all of them. The drums are more tolerable, and the recording quality is much improved over the other volumes. The playing is superb; on par with any legitimate recording made by any professional orchestra. The selections are diverse, and the arrangements are refreshing. HOC 4 was my link to many of the full-length versions of the excerpts featured, and I especially like the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th tracks (the 8th track is simply an extended version of the 1st, which makes it a much better rendition). The harpsichord playing in the 7th track is outstanding, as are the arrangements for this track. The climax will give you chills. All in all, an excellent album. I give it four stars only because as a die-hard purist, I don't suppose Bach and Vivaldi and Scarlatti would be too happy if they were to hear percussion along with their music. It would be interesting to see what the tracks would sound like without this.
Great CD, specially the adagio........2004-01-28
I love this CD in particular, because it introduced me to various greatest hits of baroque. I used it to practice my music as a teenager. I recommed this to you, specially if you have kids, because the drum sounds, make it easier to listen to the new generations. I loved the Pachelbel, and the adagio part is Super Excellent.
It's No Louis Clark & the Royal Philharmonic... But it's ok.......2003-12-07
Back in 81 when I got the original Hooked on Classics record as a gift (which I still have), I discovered the beauty and power of classical music in a different way. Now, classical music makes up 1/3 of my music library because of that compilation of classics (thanks to Louis Clark and the Royal Philharmonic).
So would I say this volume 4 has the same effect? I'd answer no, but I did like tracks 2 & 7.
No So Great.......2003-10-29
Once again another pathetic attempt at recreating what Louis Clark did with the original Hooked on the Classics. He succeeded by getting many of us hooked to the classics...something this album probably can't and won't do.

Album Description
As the foremost representative of one of the most illustrious musical dynasties in history, François Couperin achieved distinction in every contemporary genre except opera. But it was in his pieces for the harpsichord that he revealed his personality -- La Couperin, from the 21st Ordre, is a witty self-portrait (marked "with moderate vivacity"!). Couperin also showed in his four Livres de Clavecin in 27 Ordres that he was interested in every aspect of his times, from the great personages at court whom he frequented as music master to the royal family (Les Lis Naissans, an evocation for the twelve-year-old Louis XV) to the delights of childhood (Les Petits Ages), not to mention satire of the parochial quarrels of musicians (Les Fastes de la Grande et Ancienne Ménéstrandise) and the taste for pastoral (Les Bergeries). Even when the hidden meanings of those intriguing titles escapes us (what are the beguiling Baricades Mistérieuses or the Tic-Toc-Choc?), or when abstract music claims its share of attention, as in the majestic Passacaille, we are as fascinated as ever by this kaleidoscope of colors and styles. "I should never have thought my Pieces would achieve immortality," wrote the composer in the preface to his Third Book. But that is precisely what has happened.

A Wonderful CD.......2005-08-21
A wonderful CD once you turn down the volume. It is right up there at the top of my favorite harpsicord records list with Hantai's Goldbergs and Scarlatti Sonatas. Endlessly fascinating music and oh, so French!

Two things I had to adapt to on this recording were first the amount of rhythmic inflection that Mme Verlet deploys, particularly in Barricades itself, and second the powerful tone of the three harpsichords used -- I find I need a fairly low volume-setting. Two and maybe all three of these are contemporary with the composer, depending on whether the French means that the Porteous instrument used in Barricades and Bergeries, or only the instrument it is modelled on, is from the late 17th century, so the effect must be authentic. Having once adapted, I am enjoying this recital more and more. The pieces are delightful and the playing reminds me more of Landowska than of some other harpsichordists I know. There is plenty of variety and colour in the registration once I had got used to the heavyweight instruments, but it is never flash in the manner of Malcolm (not that I mind that in the least). What I do protest about is the liner notes which are a right old load of air chaud, strictly le guff. A disc of this distinction deserves serious and informative comment. I shall have to look for this elsewhere, but I can forgive the liner because of the beautiful Vermeer on the front of the disc as issued in Europe.

Time + Experience = Appreciation.......2007-02-25
I bought this record when it first came out, mainly due to my interest in the Police, but what I found sounded nothing like the punk-pop trio that had captivated so many. It was a letdown.
Maybe I had been expecting a pop guitar album, something to rival Regatta de Blanc, or perhaps it was my lack of affection for new age music that only furthered my disappointment. Whatever the case, the Cd has lain dormant on my shelf for some time, but yesterday I took it out after almost twenty years and heard something I liked... a lot.
I can't say exactly when I became a fan of new age music but I suspect my love for Pink Floyd contributed heavilly to that transformation. In any case, this record is something special, and I admit that after owning the darn thing for twenty years.
I've sold back a few cds over the years. I'm glad this wasn't one of them.
Beautiful Arrangements, Simplistic Form.......2004-01-24
Mysterious Barricades is a very unique album from Andy Summers. The arrangements are certainly not guitar driven, even when one of the compositions, "When That Day Comes", is performed entirely on guitar. There is a feeling of somberness and reflection after listening to this creative piece of work.
Joys of Deep Diving.......2003-12-08
No drums, lots of rythms. No shred, but there's a master.
Abstract and melodic. Perfect album.

Album Description
"David Rovics is the musical version of Democracy Now!" (Amy Goodman, Host, Democracy Now!) "If the great Phil Ochs were to come back from the dead tonight he'd probably be hailed as the new David Rovics." (Andy Kershaw, BBC Radio 3). This is the second release in a series of politically charged folk recordings from Daemon Records and AK Press.
Customer Reviews:
David Rovics' songs are the modern anthems for our times........2007-01-16
David expresses in song what people like Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn express in the written word. I can't imagine why a right wing person would even review this title, they are not who this music is for. They won't like it any more than I would like attending a fundamentalist sermon. This music resonates for me because it talks about the struggles of disenfranchised peoples. If you are conservative either religiously or politically you won't like it. Unless, of course... you are open to a different perspective. If, on the other hand, your are more left of center - have a concern for forgoten people, the enviornment, and political freedom... Then you will absolutely resonate with this music. The Haliburton album is great also.
WHO WOULD JESUS BOMB?.......2006-02-07
Quintessential collection by the leading figure in the current folk revival. Rovics, like Dylan of long ago, has a distinctive delivery, is a provocatively competent and accomplished musician, and speaks about the most important things in a way which everyone must hear. The now justly famous "Who Would Jesus Bomb?" is the most 'to the chase' anthem of the anti-Iraq War movement I've heard to date. DR has a generous web site on which you can hear his current material including the wrenching "New Orleans".
Telling it like it is..........2005-11-24
>
There are a lot of good singer/songwriters and bands
around today but their lyrics are bland, they don't
get to grips with the modern world and its' issues.
Here's one singer/songwriter who does.
Having trumpeted the American protest singer David Rovics
more than once, I think I should now give my impressions
of him now that I've finally seen him.
On his recent British tour I caught up with him at the
North Bridge Inn at Exeter.
The posters outside the pub announcing 'David Rovics'
Seemed to show two big bearded guys singing, but I couldn't
see any big bearded guys in the place - in fact about
20 mins before the show there were only about 8 of us in
the pub.
The landlord went over to the door to collect the tickets
and the people started coming in - a thin tall
distinguished guy first with a black-African girlfriend
in national dress.
The armchairs and sofas filled up and there must have
been about 60 people in the place with some playing cards
up the back. The tall distinguished guy (looked like a
teacher about 33 years of age) was talking to someone
and I realised he must have been David Rovics.
David Rovics sung his set just accompanying himself with
urgent guitar. I think he kicked off with 'Shut them
Down' about shutting down the multi-national companies
which are potentially doing so much harm to the environment.
The audience listened appreciatively, laughing at the
satirical jokes in the lyrics, and clapping
enthusiastically. Strong social comment, very anti-war,
as a mate of mine said "Dave is no wishy washy liberal
folk singer!". Another friend told me "He's got a better
voice than Dylan."
David lounged back on a sofa with his girlfriend at
the interval about to enjoy a magic moment and I stuck my
head between them:
"David could I ask you a couple of questions?"
~ "O.K."
"With America being more conservative than England,
when you perform over there do you get a lot of
people protesting at you from the audience?"
~ "No, generally the audiences are very supportive."
"I thought that you might have got some criticism from
Jewish groups because of the pro-Palestinian stance you
take in some of your songs?"
~ "I'm not anti-Semitic - my father is Jewish. A lot
of Jewish people in America are anti - Zionist. We object
to the aggressive/acquisitive actions of Israel towards
the Palestinians."
"In my magazine I suggest that they solve the problem by
moving Israel to Montana - the least populated state in
the U.S."
~ "If you're going tongue-in-cheek, Israel should be moved
to Bavaria and all the people from Bavaria moved into
Austria, that would be ironic as Bavaria was
Hitler's homeland!"
If you want an insight on the Israel/Palestinian's
situation you should read The Absence of Peace by
Nicholas Guyatt."
"People are saying that you are the new Bob Dylan what
do you think about that?"
~ "Well I'm very flattered, but Dylan is a far more
personal songwriter than I am."
"Thankyou very much".
I had to leave the Inn soon after but I feel David hit
the nail on the head there on why he hasn't been heard
of, or played on the radio stations like Dylan. Two
reasons:
There are standard folk song tunes and David employs a
lot of these to carry his lyrics, this results in the
lyrics being great but the tunes sounding samey. He
should try writing a few of his own tunes. Dylan's tunes
are always a twist away from what's been written before.
That's if David wants to take his message to a wider
audience.
Secondly, he's right about Dylan's songs being more
personal. I love David's overt political lyrics, could
listen to him all night long, but to the majority of rock
and folk fans too many protest songs one after the
other becomes like a party political broadcast,
and they switch off. Throw in a couple of love songs,
or a song about sailing or something; or a Dylan/Beatles
type psychological song to break things up. You've got
the protest singing off pat.
Having said that I bought David's `Behind the Barricades -
the best of David Rovics' CD while in the pub and it
hasn't been off my record player since (except to
play Morrissey, Gillian Welch, Twista, Jackie Leven,
Josh Ritter, Bob Dylan...) - but Dave's been in there with them.
Welcome back Woody.......2004-03-30
I thought protest music was dead, until I heard the two CDs from David Rovics and watched him perform at the Crawford, Texas anti-war rally on March 20, 2004. I have ordered copies for every member of my family. Thank you for Jenin, The Death of Rachel Corrie, In One World, Palestine and so many, many others. You give those of us who have been activists for the Palestinians real hope.
The real thing.......2004-01-11
This is truly relevant progressive and anti-war folk music. It is the sound of maintaining your First Amendment Freedom of Speech. Play it loud to many people. Its what Woody Guthrie would be doing if he were here now. Rovic's singing is perhaps reminiscent of Steve Goodman (of "City of New Orleans" fame); his guitar playing is perfect for his messages. Rovics' recordings are not on one of the huge corporate labels, and for good reason: Big corporations don't care if you to hear these words or think independently. Although this is the only Rovics album carried by Amazon so far (thanks for this at least, Amazon) if you like this sampler you can get many other great albums directly from David. Folk music also recommended along these lines: Pat Humphries, Stephan Smith, Seize the Day, Billy Bragg, Ani DiFranco. Remember Peace with Justice....
