Johnny Cash had been breaking new ground for a decade when At Folsom Prison suddenly made the world at large take notice. The interaction of a volatile prison population starved for entertainment and a desperately on-form Johnny Cash was electrifying. His somber machismo finally found a home. The songs, which included every prison song Cash knew ("I Got Stripes," "The Wall," "25 Minutes to Go," "Cocaine Blues," plus his own "Folsom Prison Blues") were tailored to galvanize the crowd. This set is all about atmosphere. Live at the Grand Ole Opry this ain't. The 1999 version drops the San Quentin portion of the original CD reissue, instead adding three cuts to complete the full and uncensored Folsom show. --Colin EscottCustomer Reviews:
At Folsom Prison by Johnny Cash.......2007-06-27
But, after seeing the movie " Walk the Line " I was hooked.
I just had to get me some Johnny Cash and see what the big deal was.
The thing I like about him is that he is such a great story teller.
Every song he sings makes you believe that what he is singing about
happened to you. To me, it really doesn't sound like country at all.
It's more like blues with a little country and rock mixed in.
I can see why the " Folsom Prison " album was his best album.
The songs he did on this album are some his best work.
Some of my favorites are " Cocaine Blues ", " Jackson ", " Busted ".
and " I Got Stripes " just to name a few.
If you don't know, or your not a big country fan like I was.
Pick up this cd and let Johnny Cash the man in black make a believer
out of you.

The Man In Black As He Was Meant To Be Heard.......2007-05-26
Johnny Cash's classic live album: songs of darkness and rage.......2003-09-17
Part of the reason this is such a great album is because Cash clearly plays to his audience, singing songs about prison, crime and murder, loss and regret, mother and God, and most importantly loneliness. There is no sugarcoating of the harsh realities of prison life in these songs as Cash sings the songs of the gospel of darkness and rage. Cash's singing is truly authentic (you can feel him feeding off of his audience) and the result is compelling cathartic. This is not an album filled with hits although there are certainly several recognizable songs: "Folsom Prison Blues," "Jackson," and "I Still Miss Someone." But it will be the ones you might never have heard before, such as "I Got Stripes," that stand out in your mind after listening to the album. This was already a 5 star album, but now the entire concert is available on CD adding three previously unreleased tracks: "Busted," "Joe Bean," and "The Legend of John Henry's Hammer." "At Folsom Prison" is an essential Johnny Cash album and if you own just two Johnny Cash CDs I would pick this one and 1994's "American Recording." They will surely give you the measure of the Man in Black and his music.

Album Description
This Japanese remastered pressing drops the San Quentin portion of the original CD reissue, instead adding 3 cuts to complete the full and uncensored Folsom show, and includes a photo booklet. Want to hear part of the reason why Johnny Cash is an icon, a singer respected and influential in country, folk, and rock & roll? This is it! In 1968, one of the most tumultuous years in American history since the Depression years, Cash recorded an album live in front of a (literally) captive audience, in Folsom Prison, in front of a wildly appreciative audience. With two guitars, bass, drums, and a small vocal group (including Cash's wife June Carter Cash and the Statler Brothers), Cash sings his hits and lesser-known songs ('Send A Picture of Mother') and some haunting country standards ('Dark As A Dungeon') and songs about real outlaws ('Cocaine Blues') to a rapt audience that hangs onto every word. With its unique setting, this is as harrowing an album as any ever recorded. CBS. 2006.Customer Reviews:
More a musical presence than a musician but a GREAT one!.......2006-09-03
His music is predictable. His guitar playing is fundamental, the drum sets are monotonously train-like, the driving base is uncreative and simple; Johnny's always-slightly-wavering-off-key tremolo-baritone is ever-present and the themes of the tunes, themselves, are simple and well known. Death, dying, drugs, lonesome blues, broken hearts and bad guys facing the eternal footman. Playing at Folsom Prison was a stroke of genius! But is was not, I believe, the music that made him the performer he was or made this one of the seminally important albums of the 20th century: It was, rather, his presence as a person, as a man (in the most classical "manly" sense of the word) and as a performer.
From the moment he takes the stage until the recording ends, he is in complete control of everything - and makes no attempt to hide it. The band is his, as is the music, the style and the heart of the event. He successfully presents himself as `one of the guys' and, depending upon your historical references - this is an exaggeration to one degree or another - but no one really cares. Men in confinement listening to what they see as one of themselves - free of the chains that bind them -getting rich being who they are or wish they could be. It is all about the presentation ... and, I would suggest with Johnny Cash, it always was.
This CD contains 19 well known tracks, including:
1. Folsom Prison Blues
2. Busted*
3. Dark As The Dungeon
4. I Still Miss Someone
5. Cocaine Blues
6. 25 Minutes To Go
7. Orange Blossom Special
8. The Long Black Veil
9. Send A Picture Of Mother
10. The Wall
11. Dirty Old Egg Suckin' Dog
12. Flushed From The Bathroom Of Your Heart

15. Give My Love To Rose (with June Carter)
16. I Got Stripes
17. The Legend of John Henry's Hammer*
18. Green Green Grass Of Home
19. Greystone Chapel
*: Previously unreleased bonus tracks
Recorded, initially, in 1968, it has been reissued in many forms. This particular CD, in addition to the three `bonus' tracks, also contains a photo and verbal essay insert that captures yet other aspects of the reality of that day in that time.
This CD is a must for any collector of country and/or Cash music. The quality of the remastering render it clearer and more satisfying than, in my opinion, the original LP - which I am pleased to own as well. This is the essence of Johnny Cash - the presentation of a lifetime.
Johnny Cash's classic album: songs of darkness and rage.......2006-04-01
Johnny Cash was certainly a legendary figure of American music who often seemed the embodiment of an prophet from the Old Testament. When he passed there was a natural impulse to want to listen to the man and his music, but I have maintained from the start that you have to resist the impulse to take the easy way out and just listen to one of his numerous hits collections. But there was forty years of music from the man and he is better served by checking out one of the superb albums that he put out during his music career. From that perspective "At Folsom Prison" and "At San Quentin" are the two quintessential Johnny Cash albums from what ended up being the key transitional part of one of the great careers in American music. Both albums were recorded live in front of eager audiences of prison inmates in the late 1960s and provide ample proof of why Cash was one of the most imposing and influential figures in country music.
Part of the reason this is a great album is because Cash clearly plays to his audience, singing songs about prison, crime and murder, loss and regret, mother and God, and most importantly loneliness. There is no sugarcoating of the harsh realities of prison life in these songs as Cash sings the songs of the gospel of darkness and rage. Cash's singing is truly authentic (you can feel him feeding off of his audience) and the result is compelling cathartic. But it will be the ones you might never have heard before, such as "I Got Stripes," that stand out in your mind after listening to the album.
This was already a 5 star album, but this 1999 reissue CD now provides the entire concert, adding three previously unreleased tracks--"Busted," "Joe Bean," and "The Legend of John Henry's Hammer"--to complete the listening expereince. "At Folsom Prison" is an essential Johnny Cash album and if you own just two Johnny Cash CDs I would pick this one and 1994's "American Recording." After that you can certainly pick and choose any one of the aforementioned greatest hits collections, but these two will surely give you the measure of the Man in Black and his music.

Johnny Cash at this best, singing to captive audiences.......2005-08-23
Part of the reason these were great albums was because Cash clearly plays to his audience, singing songs about prison, crime and murder, loss and regret, mother and God, and most importantly loneliness. There is no sugarcoating of the harsh realities of prison life in these songs as Cash sings the songs of the gospel of darkness and rage. Cash's singing is truly authentic (you can feel him feeding off of his audience) and the result is compelling cathartic. This is not an album filled with hits although there are certainly several recognizable songs: "Folsom Prison Blues," "I Still Miss Someone," and a duet of "Jackson" with June Carter Cash. But it will be the ones you might never have heard before, such as "I Got Stripes," that stand out in your mind after listening to the album.
What remains constant on both of these albums is Cash's ability to feed off of his captive audience. When he plays to these prisoners you do not doubt for a second that he is one of them, a larger than life outlaw, even though the only time he spent behind bars was in a drunk tank. Cash is clearly on the edge as he rips his way through jailhouse ballads like "Starkville City Jail" and "San Quentin" along with old hits like "I Walk the Line." But it is when Cash sings "A Boy Named Sue," a song written by Shel Silverstein, that he shows his absolutely mastery (the rest of us were just shocked by a hit record with a "bleep" on it).
These have both been legendary albums for decades and overall this is a nice collection of the best of both. Everyone will have an omission to complain about (e.g., no "Ring of Fire"?), but then true fans of the Man in Black and his music will already own both of these albums and the remastered versions with the additional tracks at that. But getting this many tracks from both albums on one CD is still both a treat and a tribute, and if you were going to only pick one classic Johnny Cash album to have in your music library, at least this one keeps you from having to flip a coin to choose between "At Folsom Prison" and "At San Quentin" (FYI: the former is just a shade better).
Hello, I'm Johnny Cash.......2005-02-27
The Man in Black at his best.......2002-10-01
It is clearly the audience that drives Cash's selected song choices. There are a number of classic prison songs: Folsom Prison Blues, 25 Minutes to Go, I Got Stripes, Wall, San Quentin, and Starkville County Jail being the most prominent. There are also a few laughter-generating ditties such as Dirty Old Egg Sucking Dog and Flushed From the Bathroom of Your Heart. In contrast, Dark as a Dungeon, Long Black Veil, Send a Picture of Mother, and Green, Green Grass of Home convey a somber, reflective mood. Naturally, Cash also includes hits such as Jackson (with wife June Carter Cash), A Boy Named Sue, and the Cash staple I Walk the Line. Wanted Man, a song written by Bob Dylan, is another standout track that really gets the crowd of prisoners excited.
Clearly, the newly reissued recordings featuring a number of extra tracks from each prison performance make this CD less desirable than it used to be, but these original releases are still well worth the money and served over a quarter of a century as the most desirable Cash recordings available. The audience is obviously enthusiastic, and the man in black is in fine form. By all means, buy the reissued albums separately in order to get the "complete" prison concerts, but appreciate this 2-in-1 CD for all the great music it has provided for us over the years.
Pure Country Classics!.......1999-10-04
Johnny Cash RULES!!.......1999-08-05
Johnny's songs come across with the wit and personality of Johnny himself. The songs that we have come to know and love, "Boy Names Sue", "Folsom County Blues", etc., and the lesser know songs are all catchy, fun, and to-the-point.
Get this album, even if you hate Country musc...especially if you hate Country music.

ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B000E6EI30 Release Date: 2006-03-21 |
Album Description
2 CD set of both of Cash's famous live prison albums of the '60s. Cash has always been a champion of the underdog, as well as cultivating a bit of a badass image (a veneer not harmed by some well-publicized troubles with the law), so these live performances for the prisoners of the Folsom and San Quentin penitentiaries seem more like a preacher delivering a sermon to a faithful parish than a do-gooder slumming in the prison system. Each concert includes a song tailor-made for the event. 'San Quentin' is sung from the point of view of a long-time inmate who bears the psychic scars of incarceration. 'Folsom Prison Blues', one of Cash's signature songs, is Cash's most cold-eyed examination of the sociopathic criminal mind, containing the famous line 'I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die.' Tunes like these naturally endear Cash to his captive audience, but the prisoners are equally enthused by the humorous, Shel Silverstein-penned 'A Boy Named Sue', the sad, romantic 'I Still Miss Someone' and the uproarious, best Country song title of all time-award winner 'Flushed From The Bathroom Of Your Heart'.
