Album Description
The Police celebrate the 30th anniversary of their recording debut with their first double-disc CD "best of" collection entitled, The Police. The 28 songs bring together the biggest hits from the band's five original studio albums and includes their very first single, 1977's "Fall Out."
From that rarity to one of the most-remembered and most performed rock ballads of the `80s, 1983's "Every Breath You Take," The Police spans the group's six-year journey from sweaty clubs to sold-out stadiums - establishing them as one of the definitive and most popular rock groups in the world.
Customer Reviews:
Literate, poetic...great pop/rock 4.5 out of 5.......2007-07-13
I'm not giving this cd 5 out of 5 because of some issues about the sound...the first cd seems to lack presence in the sound and there is some distortion in the first track of disc 2 [I listen to cds on good quality headphones and I feel that these sound issues could be eliminated if people did the same prior to releasing cds].
Anyway, The Police are perhaps THE major British band of the 1980s. Looking at the credits in the double cd, it seems that lead singer "Sting" pretty much did everything himself...from writing the songs to arranging the music.
Many of the songs on this compilation show Sting to be the former English teacher that he was...from his superior way with words, to his literary allusions.
The highlights of the first cd for me are:
Can't stand losing you-a song about breaking up. The 'voice' of the song sounds like a pouty teenager and is amusing for its melodrama. Suicide is mentioned in this song. This topic seems fertile for rock. E.g. Metallica have the beautiful and absolute classic song "Fade to black", with its adult sensibility; and Megadeth have "A tout le monde", which, like this Police song, seems to have a teenage 'voice' singing. Both latter songs have melodrama, but The Police give their song a nice dose of humour.
Roxanne-perhaps the song which broke the band, especially in the UK. It's about the boyfriend of a prostitute, I think. Along with the song above, it is one of the strongest songs on the first cd. It has a nice mixture of a vulnerable 'voice' doing the singing, and the pounding, repetitive lyrics of the chorus.
Two other songs from the first cd which take my fancy are "Message in a bottle" and "Walking on the moon". Both songs are more towards the "ballad" end of the pop/rock spectrum. The latter song, particulary, illustrates Sting's great lyrical imagery...i.e. he likens walking, when one is in love, to walking on the moon...brilliant use of lyrics and imagery.
The second cd contains most of the songs that I particularly like from this band. "De do do do, de da da da" is a terrific song about how the powerful use language for their own benefit. Many years ago I wasn't very keen on this song, as it SOUNDED like non-sense [and going on the title too]. Listening to this song years later, you appreciate the depth of meaning it has behind it. Nice turn of phrase "Poets, priests and politicians, have words to thank for their positions". Sting doesn't seem to include pop/rock stars!
"Invisible sun" has a terrificly eerie opening [not unlike Synchronicity II...in fact, the intros could just as easily be used to introduce darker themes and music, but settles for terrific pop/rock]. I'm not so keen on the chorus of Invisible Sun, but I really like the verses and the ambiance of the introduction.
"Spirits in the material world" is another highlight from the second disc.
It exemplifies an attractive trait of this band...mixing up the hooks in one song. The song is catchy from the start, with nice melodies [vocal], but it really picks up when a NEW melody [keyboard] is introduced in the latter part of the song. This song may be the one where Sting's glib political views are at the fore ["Our so called leaders speak. With words they try to gaol you. They subjugate the meek, but it's the rhetoric of failure"]. That's a VERY nice turn of phrase, but, like I say, rather glib and lacking in hope for the political process.
Perhaps the band's biggest hit is "Every breath you take". This song isn't one that has ever really grabbed me. To me it's like the curate's egg...good in parts. An Australian equivalent would be Mondo Rock's "Come said the boy"-both bands had monumentally great pop/rock songs, but their most successful songs were not the ones I rated as great. Anyway, The Police's ballad is perhaps growing more on me now...it's 'good' bits are making the song gel better now, for me, perhaps.
"Wrapped around your finger" is another very good Police song, and which has those literary allusions I spoke of earlier "Caught between the Scylla and Charibdes". Perhaps my favourite Police song of all is "King of pain", which also has some literary allusions that I know of "There's a king with his eyes torn out" and some that elude me "There's a skeleton choking on a crust of bread". Both these songs illustrate the great thing about Police songs...how they change gears, so to speak, by changing tempo or pitch or melody. The bit in King Of Pain where this happens is where Sting raises his voice higher and starts the line about the King. Reading the lyrics, I saw that it was more gruesome than I remember, but nonetheless beautiful to listen to.
"Synchronicity" is one of the band's more adventurous sounding rock songs but they carry it off with aplomb.
I do remember hearing somewhere about the song "Murder by numbers" causing controversy in the US and the band's response to this. Having read the lyrics that come with this cd, I see that the band is right to defend the song, but perhaps they only have themselves to blame by making the point of their song towards the end, making it difficult to come by, perhaps. It is also another politically glib song by Sting, though perhaps containing a germ of truth.
Lastly, I did find "Walking in your footsteps" to be a lyrically interesting song. Perhaps it is Sting likening humans to dinosaurs...with us heading for extinction too, like the dinosaurs, if we keep toying with nuclear power.
In conclusion, this is a terrific buy for people into lyrically sophisticated music with catchy pop/rock that is also sophisticated. I do find the drumming sound by this band to be satisfying and their melodies gorgeous when they're at their best. It's just a pity though that on occasion it sounds like the master tapes are in fact LP records...with dust or scratches on them.
P.S. if you like poetic music, I recommend and have reviewed:
Patti Smith's album Horses.
If you like political music, I recommend and have reviewed numerous albums by Midnight Oil here [highly recommended are their albums "10-1" and "Diesel and dust".
I've reviewed Metallica and Megadeth albums here too.
Best rhythm section in rock........2007-07-08
Buy and get a master class in how to make a rock rhythm section work to perfection.
Excellent compilation that could have been perfect with some additional songs...4 1/2 stars.......2007-07-06
"Fall Out" was their first single and has only appeared on their four disc anthology on CD before this. We get 6 songs from the band's first album "Outlandos d' Amour" 4 tracks from their second album "Regatta De Blanc" their second album, 5 tracks from "Zenyatta Mondatta" their third album, 4 tracks from their fourth album "Ghost in the Machine" and a whopping 8 tracks (most of the album!)from "Synchroncity". We don't get anything from their soundtrack album "Brimstone and Treacle" (which includes the terrific song "I Burn For You") nor anything from their live album. Also missing are b-sides to most of their singles some of which are outstanding.
With 14 songs on each disc there was some room for additional tracks some of which might not have been big hits but deserved a larger audience. "I Burn For You","Bombs Away", "Darkness", "Nothing Achieving" and "Visions of the Night", "Low Life", "The Bed's Too Big Without You" (which they are playing on the tour) are among the songs that probably should have been included.
This is a very good set for fans looking for the bulk of the best album tracks and hits. The packaging includes a one sheet with some credits on it that folds out into a replica of an early concert poster for the band. The slip case is kind of cool as well. When you slide the holder out of the slipcase the band's songs are listed on the yellow cover (and you can see them when you hold it up to the light).

There have been plenty of attempts to anthologize this venerable Southern band's extensive catalog, but this is the first one to get it right. Spreading 32 tracks from just over 30 years of albums across two discs, the immaculately sequenced compilation plays like a well-conceived piece. From the flute-dominated "Take the Highway," the opening cut of their 1973 debut, the Marshall Tucker Band avoided the typical Southern-boogie-rockin'-guitar path later epitomized by their more rowdy brethren the Outlaws, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Molly Hatchet. Rather, Tucker presented a more laid-back, country-based approach, highlighted by the jazzy playing of woodwind player Jerry Eubanks and drummer Paul Riddle.Although the Capricorn/Warner Bros. decade that ended in 1983 accounts for the bulk of these selections, the last half of the second disc presents a revamped lineup led by sole original member/lead singer Doug Gray, continuing the musical legacy with remarkably engaging results. The 24-page booklet featuring a detailed history, a live CD-ROM track, and crisply remastered sound further enhance the experience that finally bestows upon this underrated band the comprehensive, classy, and long-overdue retrospective it deserves. --Hal Horowitz

I prefer Melanie C. over Pam A. on "When You're Gone." But that is just a cut and paste change isn't it. But worth noting if you were expecting the version you hear on the radio from time to time.

At three CDs, Rhino's 25th Anniversary Collection may have featured just a little too much. But at one CD, Rhino's distillation of that box set--also titled Anthology--may have been just a tad too short, neglecting cuts ("The Proud One," "Peanuts") that true aficionados wanted on CD. The label remedies the situation with its 2001 Anthology, which, at two CDs, is really only three songs shorter than the 25th Anniversary Collection. Thus, the casual fan may still get a bit more than necessary (including a very vanilla take on Fats Domino's "Ain't That a Shame"). The tradeoff is you'll also get everything you could possibly want by this wonderful group, including the great obscurities (although the label also released a new rarities package, Off Seasons, to coincide with this compilation). It prominently features those amazing '60s radio hits that merged Spector-ish production with East Coast street-corner doo-wop to produce epic miniature rock operas. Much of the imagery in those very class-conscious love stories would turn up in the songs of another great Italian rock star from New Jersey named Springsteen. And to this day, the music and production still sound passionate and glorious. --Bill HoldshipCustomer Reviews:

Great Sound. Volume and mixing is perfect. I even put this on a Wave Editor and the volume is near 0db with terrific dynamic range.
Great Packaging, with a nice booklet with photos, a detailed set list with dates and original stock numbers, and nice information about the group.

This collection made me a fan!.......2007-03-02
Anyway, that's what I thought until out of a desperate attempt to wean my young children off the Beach Boys that they seem to need to listen to every evening and have been for the last two years or so, I went ahead and ordered this anthology.
Well, a whole new world of pop music opened up to me. Guess what, when you play a beatifully remastered CD on a high-end stereo system (one of those systems where the transformers are in separate boxes), they actually sound rather good! I was totally amazed at this band that I had pre-judged as being a bunch of 50's throwbacks that are only good for a screech or two during a CD commercial on late-night TV.
And, the stuff between the hits sounds good too. Sure, not all the tunes on this collection have the hooks of the great hits, but to me it's more interesting to hear a full range of what a band is/was capable of, not just the absolutely greatest hits.
One of my kids liked it too. So, if you're already a fan of this band I don't see how you could go wrong, unless you own all these tunes already, but if you're not a fan this CD set just might make you one.
And once you've digested this anthology, go get the "Let's Hang On and 11 Other Hits". It's got a different version of "Workin' my Way Back to You" and the brilliant "Beggars Parade" and a lot of other great tunes that didn't make it to their greatest hits albums.
Great Collection.......2007-02-17
It has very hard to find singles that were released in the 60s and 70s. One of my favorite selections is FALLEN ANGEL, that is featured in the Broadway play JERSEY BOYS. Buy this!!

Amazon.com essential recording
The most striking thing about this two-disc overview of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers is the powerful case it makes for its creators as the most consistent band of not only their era, but of all time. Think of another rocker who can claim to have created a quarter-century of recordings that, when ranked on a 10-point scale, never dip below a solid 7? Indeed, while disc 1 reflects a marginally more aggressive mindset than disc 2, it wouldn't be difficult to imagine the discs flip-flopped; maturity has yet to induce lethargy for Petty and the boys. Occupying the solid middle ground between the 18-track Greatest Hits and the six-disc Playback box, Anthology serves up 34 selections, nearly every one an FM staple. From 1976's "Breakdown" through the collection's only new offering, 2000's "Surrender," this retrospective never flags. But how could it? --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:
Great for "Casual Fans".......2007-06-30
Subsequently, over the years, I have purchased every one of Tom's and the Boy's cd's. I still consider myself just a casual fan. I simply like the hits off each cd, with a few extras thrown in by personal taste. Anyway, the majority of these discs are from the early '90's. Not the best sound quality. And, it takes some time and effort to load each disc in my itunes and pick just the songs that I want. The solution?
Buy this 2-disc Anthology. It's a great price. It's sounds good. And all your favorite Petty tunes are right there, conveniently in one place, uh...or two. I dropped them into my iPod, and haven't looked back since.
Now all I have to do is get The Last DJ and The Highway Companion, and I'm done.

Outstanding Petty anthology covering the MCA years.......2007-02-27
THE DISCS: (2000) 34 tracks on two discs clocking in at approximately 124 minutes (disc-1 with 57:37 minutes, and disc-2 with 66:16). Included with the discs is a 10-page booklet containing song titles/credits, band photos, a 1-page intro from Cameron Crowe, what songs came from which albums and the year released. This compilation follows Petty from his debut in 1976 through this 2000 "Anthology". Digitally remastered sound. Label - UTV Records / MCA.
ALBUM REPRESENTATION: Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers (4 songs), You're Gonna Get It (3), Damn The Torpedoes (4), Hard Promises (2), Long After Dark (3), Southern Accents (3), Pack Up The Plantation (1), Let Me Up - I've Had Enough (2), Full Moon Fever (5), Into The Great Wide Open (3), Greatest Hits (1), Playback (1), Anthology (1), Bella Donna - Stevie Nicks 1981 solo album (1).
COMMENTS: Every music listener needs some Tom Petty in his/her collection. "Damn The Torpedoes" (1979) and "Full Moon Fever" (1989) are essential studio recordings of his. Other albums like his self titled debut, "Long After Dark", "Southern Accents" and "Into The Great Wide Open" are great albums, but I wouldn't classify them as essential Petty necessarily. Petty's "Greatest Hits" (1993) is still a fine representation on one disc, but with this more recent 2-disc "Anthology", the '93 disc is now obsolete. 17 of the 18 songs from his "Greatest Hits" album are here, minus the skippable last track "Something In The Air". THE GOOD: All the staples are here - "Breakdown", "American Girl", "I Need To Know", "Refugee", "Here Comes My Girl", "Don't Do Me Like That", "Even The Losers", "You Got Lucky", "Don't Come Around Here No More", "Free Fallin'", "I Won't Back Down", "Runnin' Down A Dream", "Learning To Fly", "Mary Jane's Last Dance", etc. The minor successes absent from his '93 "Greatest Hits" are here - "Change Of Heart", "A Woman In Love (It's Not Me)", "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around", "So You Want To Be A Rock & Roll Star", "Jammin' Me", "Love Is A Long Road", and "Yer So Bad". There are several deep album cuts (i.e. "Hometown Blues", "The Wild One, Forever", "Too Much Ain't Enough", etc) that are nice inclusions. Chronological order is a bonus here - showcasing Petty's slight changes over the decades. Song selection is top notch. The remastered sound is crisp. THE NOT SO GOOD: Only two things stick out here. First and foremost, there are no tracks from his "Wildflowers" (1994) or "Echos" (1999) albums... most likely due to these 2 albums being on the 'Warner Bros' label (and everything prior on MCA's label). This is a shame because I really feel the songs "You Wreck Me", "Cabin Down Below" and "It's Good To Be King" deserve to be on "Anthology". Perhaps this should've been titled "Anthology - Through The MCA Years". In the same vein, there are no selections from Petty's soundtrack to the movie "She's The One" (1996). Many of Petty's early songs are short (out of the first 8 tracks, the longest song is three-and-a-half minutes), and with that being said why not throw a few more songs on both discs and utilize the free space (22 unused minutes alone on disc-1). OVERALL: A ton of music and all the major hits (despite the 2 omitted albums from Warner Bros). To date, this is the best Tom Petty compilation... period (5 stars).

Marty Stuart began collaborating with legends when he joined Lester Flatt's Nashville Grass as a 13-year-old mandolinist. One of his biggest singles, 1991's "The Whiskey Ain't Workin'," teamed him with Travis Tritt. This compilation includes a rare Stuart mandolin workout on Bill Monroe's "Rawhide" recorded onstage with Flatt in 1974, and "Hearts Like Ours" with wife Connie Smith. He and ex-father-in-law Johnny Cash created a fiery revival of Cash's Sun recording of "Doin' My Time." With Steve Earle, Stuart created a beautifully understated rendition of Buddy Holly's "Crying, Waiting, Hoping." He was equally adept with Earl Scruggs on "John Henry" and with Merle Haggard on a 2003 "Farmer's Blues." That empathy extended to blues and gospel greats, apparent on "The Weight" with the Staple Singers and "Confessin' the Blues" with B.B. King. Two unreleased tracks include Stuart and Loretta Lynn reviving "Will You Visit Me on Sunday," a tune she'd previously recorded with the late Conway Twitty, and the Who's "I Can See for Miles" with Stuart, his band, and Old Crow Medicine Show. Unlike the many Nashville "vocal events" that are simply contrived marketing ploys, Stuart's collaborations are consistently organic, without a shred of artifice. --Rich KienzleCustomer Reviews:

This is the first release in a three-part series that essentially amounted to the three surviving Beatles officially sanctioning the release of tracks that had been bootlegged for years. Thus, you get some of their earliest recordings as teens; the tracks they cut in Hamburg, Germany; their Decca audition tapes (which were rejected); and, finally, alternate takes and works in progress of songs that are now part of the world's consciousness. Oh, yeah, you also get "Free As a Bird," the John Lennon track the other Beatles "finished" in 1995; it's out of context in the company of some of the group's early classics. Beatlemaniacs, of course, love exploring this stuff, but the three Anthologies are hardly a place for beginners to start their explorations. --Bill HoldshipCustomer Reviews:
This is previously unreleased material, not masters... 5 star for historic value alone.......2007-06-14
Of course 'Free as a Bird' is here, and if you love the Beatles, you'll want to own it, although 'Real Love' (on Anthology 2), is a better song. The audio snippets help narrate you through, and are generally interesting and enlightening (same for the liner notes in the booklet), although most of them are of medicore audio qaulity. They don't annoy me, and although absent on later 'Anthologies', create a smooth guide from track to track here (with the notes of course.)
Finally, to the one star reviewer I refered to earlier: I looked up all the people you list as "great guitarists... great drummers"- they are all jazz musicians. Now, I have nothing against jazz, in fact it's a side interest of mine, but comparing the Beatles to jazz is apples to oranges, to use the cliched analogy, for lack of a better one. You can't compare jazz to pop/rock (especially early 60s pop/rock), and in fact, I can't imagine how someone with your tastes, wondered into/got interested in the Beatles, to begin with. In short, the styles, practiced skills, theories, and criteria for good musicians/songs are simply different in these two, very different genres. Sorry you don't like this stuff. I like this and jazz. Make peace with the fact that its apples and oranges, and its the Beatles and your tastes.
(SIDE NOTE: Don't even get me started on the reviewer who prefers the Stones; I'll address that in another review.)
So, sorry for all the ranting. Overall I give Anthology one, 5 stars for historic value alone (the music isn't bad either.) But don't buy if you're not a 'diehard fan' or are just starting a collection!

A Must-Have for Beatles Collectors.......2006-12-05
This volume takes fans back to the very beginning, to 1958's "That'll Be The Day." What a thrill. Then we hear home demos that were recorded in Paul's garage. This is followed by the material recorded in Hamburg with Tony Sheridan. We are treated to five selections from the Beatles' Decca Audition. Even if it wasn't the greatest tape the Beatles could've made, I'm sure Decca is stil kicking themselves now for not signing the Beatles!
It gets better and better as time goes by. The Beatles sang "I'll Get You" at the London Palladium in 1963, and "All My Loving" on Ed Sullivan in 1964. Both of those recordings are presented here. Other highlights include:
*One After 909 - I actually prefer this version to the one that got released in 1970.
*Eight Days a Week - the tight harmony at the beginning works well. Also the false starts were interesting.
*How Do You Do It - the unreleased single.
*Free As A Bird - a new Beatles masterpiece.
Die-hard Beatles fans will not be disappointed with this set!

Not a Traditional Greatest Hits Collection , but a Historical Retrospective.......2006-05-12
As mentioned, this CD serves as a historical retrospective to the band. The material is arranged in chronological order. Some of the material is prefaced with spoken words by Lennon, McCartney, and Brian Epstein. The spoken words help set the stage for the material that is to follow. Included with the collection is a 46 page booklet that describes each of the tracks. As for the tracks themselves, these consist of demo cuts, alternative cuts, live cuts, and bootlegs. One thing that helps is to follow the material in the booklet with the music - using the booklet and music hand-in-hand helps complete the historical experience that this collection provides. This should not be confused with a traditional "Greatest Hits Collection". This is no greatest hits collection: Some of the material consisted of covers and songs that were never heard before. At the same time, the "name" songs are all different versions from what is heard in the mainstream. As a result, this helps enhance the listening experience.
Here are 10 things to look for - in no particular order:
1) "Free as a Bird" is a good song - it isn't a great one. There probably wasn't much to choose from to sustain a "virtual" reunion between the four members of the Beatles. The engineering of the song isn't bad. The song will grow on you as you hear it. It would have been nice if Ringo Starr had gotten a vocal since the other three Beatles got vocals. It is also worth noting that Harrison's "Wilbury" partner Jeff Lynne produced the song. I didn't think this song belonged as the first song, but given the fact that this doesn't fit in with the early material - I'm not sure where this should have been put.
2) George Martin does a masterful job at providing continuity and fusion to the collection. While he didn't actually produce "Free as a Bird", he produced the Anthology series as a whole.
3) The "Pre-Beatles" material is very interesting. This isn't going to have the best recording quality. In fact the 1958 Quarrymen cuts from the Phillips studio are going to have some pretty bad quality. Yet, this is going to add to the whole "historical" listening experience that this collection provides.
4) The Quarrymen and early Beatles material consist of a large number of covers. Some of the more common covers include "That'll Be the Day" (Buddy Holly), "Aint She Sweet" (Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps), and "Shout" (Isley Brothers). But perhaps the best one is the Beatles cover of the song made famous by the Coasters - "Besame Mucho". This cover stands out and shows a Latin side to the band that was rarely seen.
5) I was also surprised about the instrumental pieces that were included. "Cayenne" and "Cry For a Shadow" are two instrumentals that are included on this collection. Both instrumentals stand out.
6) The Tony Sheridan song, "My Bonnie" is included as well. It is on this version that features Sheridan on lead vocals and the Beatles supporting him as his band. Only some shouts by McCartney can be heard on background vocals.
7) There is a very funny comedy skit featuring the Beatles on the British comedy show, "The Morecambe and Wise" show. I can't get enough of when Ringo is referred to as "Bongo". This skit has a segue into a very funny version of "Moonlight Bay". This shows a lighter side of the band.
8) I would have liked to have seen more of the Ed Sullivan material included on this CD collection. I'm disappointed there isn't Ed himself providing the introduction It would have made the historical perspective "complete". The only "Sullivan" song included is "All My Loving".
9) As for the spoken words, I actually would have preferred if more spoken words were included. The spoken parts that are included serve as a great lead-in - but there are parts that don't have the spoken word add-in.
10) I love some of the unfinished demo cuts. I heard a disc-jockey in "New York" so impressed with this collection as he said "...and this is the junk!" It's amazing how stuff that didn't make it through editing could sound so good, but in this case it works.
Overall, this is one terrific collection. I've heard that this collection is not geared toward the novice fan, but I think anyone with an interest in modern music history will appreciate this collection. This collection is best listened to when you listen to it from start to finish. I wish more groups would follow this formula for producing retrospectives. This collection is highly recommended.

The most anticipated of the Anthology series, this disc covers what was arguably the Fab Four's most intensely creative period ('65-'67) when they single-handedly changed the course of popular music. Anthology 2 doesn't disappoint. Outtakes and demos show the building of songs like "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite," while the pure pop song writing of Rubber Soul and Help! is also documented, along with the sonic experimentation that characterized Revolver. Even if the legendary proto-metal jam of "What's the New Mary Jane" didn't see the light of day here, there is plenty for any Beatles fan. --Chris NicksonCustomer Reviews:
Real Love.......2007-06-07
The second interesting part for me was CD 2 - the embryonic growth of Strawberry Fields Forever - revealed in three successive takes here - makes for a satisfying and different experience of the song. It feels somewhat dimensionalised.
While not everything is fantastic or that different here, the Beatles were pretty consistent, and what is here makes for a complete Beatles experience. To enjoy it more, watch the companion DVD set. Worth the price of admission? Absolutely.

No "Spoken Word Intros" Like Volume 1, but Still Outstanding Material.......2006-12-14
As mentioned, this CD serves as a historical retrospective to the band. The material is arranged in chronological order. One of the strengths of "Beatles Anthology Volume 1" was that there was material that was prefaced with spoken words by the likes of Lennon, McCartney, and Brian Epstein. These spoken words helped set the stage for the material to follow. Unfortunately, "Beatles Anthology 2" does not have any spoken words with the exception of some comments that are on the demo cuts. While the content of "Beatles Anthology 2" is still very good, I still think it falls a bit short when compared to Volume 1. One positive is that Volume 2 does contain an outstanding 46 page booklet that helps to supplement the listening experience. This collection should not be confused with a traditional "Greatest Hits Collection". Instead of studio cuts, this collection consists of outtakes, demos, and rarities that construct a terrific listening experience.
Here are 10 things to look for - in no particular order:
1) "Real Love" is a good song. When compared to the other "virtual reunion" song on Volume 1, "Free as a Bird", it is the better of the two cuts. "Real Love" features Lennon on lead vocals (unlike "Free as a Bird" that had also had vocals by McCartney and Harrison) Like "Free as a Bird", - it was produced by Harrison's "Wilbury" partner Jeff Lynne produced the song. I didn't think this song belonged as the first song, but given the fact that this doesn't fit in with the early material - I'm not sure where this should have been put.
2) Like Volume 1, George Martin does a masterful job at providing continuity and fusion to the collection. While he didn't actually produce "Real Love", he produced the Anthology series as a whole.
3) This collection does a better job at providing demo cuts than Volume 1. In particular it is very interesting to hear demo versions such as "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Yesterday", "The Fool on the Hill", "I'm Only Sleeping", and "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite"
4) The collection features four live cuts ("I Feel Fine", "Ticket to Ride", "Yesterday", and "Help!" that were recorded at the ABC Theatre in Blackpool for the British Television Show, "Blackpool Night Out". These live cuts are outstanding.
5) Volume 1 featured much more in the way of covers. On Volume 2 the majority of the cuts are original Beatles compositions with the exception of Carl Perkins' "Everybody Trying to Be My Baby" and Chuck Berry's "Rock and Roll Music".
6) There are three instrumentals worth noting: "Eleanor Rigby", "Within You Without You", and the unissued "12-Bar Original". "12 Bar Original" is highlighted by the Harmonium played by George Martin. However the instrumental version of "Eleanor Rigby" simply blew me away.
7) I didn't classify the version of "Got to Get You Into My Life" as a demo, but more like an alternate version. While not as strong or polished as the final version that was released, I still found this intriguing. There are alternate lyrics and "pauses".
8) Perhaps the most amazing thing about this collection is the Beatles transform from the early 1960 sound into their psychedelic era. The bluesy "12 Bar Original" and very psychedelic "Tomorrow Never Knows" are ordered back to back and show how dramatic a transformation that was.
9) The three cuts of "Strawberry Fields Forever" really demonstrate how the Beatles came to evolve what would be the final product. The demo starts out as a folksy version and you can hear how they evolve some more psychedelic elements into the arrangements on the second two cuts.
10) While some of the material on this version is unfinished or interrupted by spoken words, it is what adds to the charm of the collection.
Be sure to follow along and read the liner notes that are included - they are as good as you can get. Despite the lack of the "Spoken Word Intros" that were on Volume 1, this is still an outstanding collection. Highly recommended.
Truly Historic.......2006-12-05
*Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby - from the 1965 Shea Stadium concert, not used in the film.
*I'm Looking Through You - different, with a very funky, earthy sound.
*Rock and Roll Music - live in Japan 1966, the final tour.
*Good Morning Good Morning - without the chorus or overdubs
I greatly enjoyed hearing the working versions of the Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour, two of their most creative albums. This album is a must for the serious collector.
Paul's Fatal Mistake.......2006-08-23
Both John and Paul had a knack for tapping into the rapidly evolving zeitgeist of the 60's. All You Need is Love may seem a little precious at this far removed time, but it was the perfect world rally rant at the peak of the summer of love.
Similarly, the world's attention in early '68 was on the Beatles celebrated trip to India to study with the Mahariji. What secret had they learned that they could impart on us? Of all the songs written during that sabbatical, the one that would have satisfied the curiousity of of the current youth culture was John's vision of spiritual wonder and inner peace, Across the Universe. A beautifully tranquil mantra to allow the fans a couple of weeks to contemplate before moving on.
But the ever competetive Paul would not hear of it. He was working on his very catchy, paternal influenced Lady Madonna. Brian was no longer around to intervene with his wonderful sense of timing. John's moment to capitalize on world attention was shattered. A week later, during the very next session, Hey Bulldog, he brought into the studio for the very first time his new partner, Yoko.
There were plenty of songs written in India to fill up most of the white album, and John's sudden disdain for the group venture was not completely evident until that batch was used up.
So here it is, before it mangled by World Wildlife, Phil Spector and finally the naked Paul, John's last shot at global connection in all its shimmering glory. (68 was a year where a lot of potentially positive things ended up pretty downtrodden.)
"Life is very short, and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend."

in rock. At present he is still pretty damn good. The band was productive in a time when men were not afraid to be men and rock and the keep it
simple yet up tempo power rock style is evident in the songs.
Bands today too often forget to save the drama for high school drama
class. There is too much fluff and not enough raw power and power chord structure. Bad Co. never forgot the pleasure of having a few drinks, turning the amp up to 11 and just letting the rock do the talking. The
combination of a solid Bad Co. bottom end, a great drummer and Rodgers
pool hall guy enthusiasm just plain works.
Poor man's Zeppelin.......2006-09-06
The four "new" songs at the end of disc two are alright, but forgettable. Apparently it's hard for an old band to come up with something new and really good in the modern era of rock. Only Deep Purple has been able to do this in my opinion. Actually, I'd love to see a two disc anthology like this one, for the classic Deep Purple lineup. After all, they are one of the biggies. Case closed!
As for this collection, I didn't mind too much that the later Bad Company albums were skimmed over, if you know what I mean. Nice job there. Enjoy it with a few beers and whatever you can find to inhale.

Part of what Bob Newhart mastered, earlier on stand-up albums like The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart and The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back! and later on his long-running TV series The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart, was capturing a brand of Everyman neuroses and heightening it, bringing mundane, common scenarios into the realm of the absurd--and the absurdly funny. Newhart also perfected playing a character involved in a conversation with the other party in absentia, as in one of his most famous routines, "King Kong," in which he plays the part of an Empire State Building security guard who calls his boss the night King Kong makes his famous ascent. ("Yes, sir, I looked in the handbook index under 'unauthorized personnel' and 'people without passes' and 'apes,' and 'ape's toes,' but it's not in there....") Something Like This... is a generous sampling of Newhart's best stand-up bits, and while some of his topics--airplanes, hating to fly--have now been so overdone as to be comic faux pas, rather than making his material seem dated they often serve to demonstrate just how rare a talent he is simply because the routines still elicit involuntary snorts of laughter some 30 years later. --Mark HunstmanCustomer Reviews:

What can be said about Bob Newhart that hasn't been said. Simply, he is a classic and the situations he depicts, hilarious. I probably listened to his records over a hundred times back then and I am sure my CD will get about the same play. I am anxious to play this CD for my kids, the generation that remembers the Bob Newhart Show on TV, but never heard the records. I honestly prefer Bob Newhart as the original stand up comedian as opposed to the TV star.
