The Songs Of Hank Williams Jr. (A Bocephus Celebration)

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
With all the attention paid to the 50th anniversary of the death of Hank Williams and the rise of grandson Hank III, it's inevitable that outlaw icon Hank Jr. would be honored with a tribute album, especially in light of his strong comeback (Almeria Club Recordings) of 2002. But while Alan Jackson, Montgomery Gentry, and Tracy Lawrence turn in affecting covers, what shows up time and again is how thin and faddish Junior's catalogue is--particularly in contrast to his daddy's timeless country and gospel classics--and how much tunes like "Family Tradition" depend on his self-mythologizing delivery to really fly. Several songs sound dated as dinosaurs now in this ultra-PC world, but others, i.e. "A Country Boy Can Survive," where John Anderson and George Jones boost Chad Brock's tepid vocals, take on added heft and meaning in light of global events. Executive producer Danny Kee might have been smart to use fewer home-label folks and draft more heavy hitters, but there's no denying Junior's own power when he steps forth on the closing track, "Outlaw's Reward." The old hell-raiser finds, to his surprise, that today he's musing more on "living and dying and where I'll spend eternity / And what kind of reward, Jesus, have you got out on me?" Seems like Junior has more in common with Senior, after all. --Alanna Nash

3 out of 5 stars .38 Special was rockin'!!.......2005-09-16

This is one of my favorite Hank Jr songs, and .38 Special turned up the volume on it! This is one of the only three tracks worth listening to on this album, the other two being Montgomery Gentry's "Women I've never Had," and Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Born to Boogie." To me, .38 Special's recording, as well as the original, have a very heavy Stevie Ray Vaughn feel to them, and .38 Special's cut of this song has some awseome Blues-rock guitar solo work in it, and it is therefore a very good example of what I like to call "Roadhouse Blues." And speaking of Stevie Ray Vaughn, I think him or Elvis would also have done a good job singing this song, if they weren't both dead.

5 out of 5 stars Young Country is back.......2005-01-31

In 1989, Lorrie Herndon sing in Sire on her album "Greatest Hits" with Special Guest, Tupelo Moon's Clifford Allison and Richard Cummings, Noel & the Burton Brothers (Noel, Brian, Ward and Jeff), the Gatlin Brothers, GRSJ (now Rhinestone Romeos, Greg Wallace, Justin Labonte, Rudy Horton and Steadman Marlin), Ritchie Gatlin, Mercedes Edwards, Barbie Jennings, Wanda Robbins, Denver Greenwood, 1956 Guys (Ricky Rudd, Terry Labonte, Dale Jarrett, Rusty Wallace), Garth Brooks, Travis Tritt, Clint Black and Alan Jackson. Hank Williams, Jr. did in his 1988 hit it features Foster and Lloyd, The Goldens, Highway 101, Waylon Jennings, Minnie Pearl, Sweethearts of the Rodeo, Forester Sisters, Patty Loveless, Dana McVicker, Restless Heart, Keith Whitley, Marty Stuart, Ricky Van Shelton, Vince Gill, and Bocephus' son, Shelton, now Hank III.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome, except for Trick Pony.......2004-05-31

There is only one problem with this album and that is that the song "All my rody friends are coming over tonight was covered
by-brace yourself-Trick Pony! (AAAAAAAA!!) Who the **** thought that they would be great for that song?! Seriously, I hate it when a girl tries to sing a song that was obvously written for a guy to sing. Instead, they should've gotten somebody like Travis Tritt, Kid Rock, Charlie Daniels, Confederate Railroad, or even George Thorogood to sing that song. Oh, and they sould have included the Bocephus classics "Dixie on my Mind", and "Naked Women and Beer" to this album as well.

3 out of 5 stars An OK tribute... but he does his own songs better.......2003-05-02

For more years than anyone cares to remember, Hank, Jr. couldn't get no respect in and outside of Nashville. His tepid early albums, made in the depths of the late '60s folk/countrypolitan days, were okay, but you had to work at appreciating them. Later, in the 1970s, when he re-emerged as a rockin', rowdy good old boy, things got better, but then that inevitably led to his stick-figure rightwing redneck image, the messy-bearded, Monday Night Football theme-singin,' know-nothing Bubba we've all come to know, and, well... not quite love. These days, it seems Hank, Jr.'s back in fashion, as evidenced by these rowdy, rockin tributes by the likes of Blake Shelton, Montgomery Gentry, Chad Brock, and other would-be good ole boys. Some of these songs are pretty good, but the uptempo tracks by the likes of Trick Pony and Aaron Tippin are a little embarrassing... Hank II did 'em better the first time around, and more often than not these new versions simply echo the least worthy parts of his work. Still, compared with the N'Sync-ish pablum that's coming out of Nashville these days, this disc almost seems like a slab of hard country heaven.

1 out of 5 stars Trying to be as nice as I can!!.......2003-03-29

I bought it, played it, and before I drove up my driveway it had been tossed out the window (seriously). Don't bother spending your hard earned dollars, this CD is not worth it (putting it mildly). Whoever thought of this project should have gotten fired. Come on, Trick Pony trying to sing "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight!" The classic "Family Tradition" was completely butchered, by God, if you didn't know, it's a drinking song. The only ones that did a commendable job were Tracy Lawrence and Alan Jackson. I'm truely am very really sorry Hank!! Since no one said it, I'll say it for you, "WHY DON'T YOU LEAVE THAT BOY ALONE AND LET HIM SING HIS SONGS."
