This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

John Dowland is valued today as the first English composer of solo songs, mostly because no one in England has exceeded his output; he may have been equalled by Purcell. However, his distinctive blend of poem, melody and harmony remains unsurpassed. In addition, by underplaying the role of the voice, the listener's attention is directed to the poem. This de-emphasis of the voice was favoured by Elizabethans who relished the new-minted language of Shakepeare's contemporaries. Dowland has his brighter side, but his music is preponderantly melancholy. "Lachrimae" became his signature tune. The accompanying group 'The Consort of Six' was a peculiarly English invention of the 1580's. Six different instruments-treble and bass viols, flute, lute, cittern and bandora; it was in fact the first orchestra. The titles of the instrumental pieces give us some idea of the wide range of society in which Dowland moved; very "upper class". John Dowland was typical of composers of that time in that he earned his living by playing, and he was very much sought after by both amateurs and professionals. Alfred Deller, the most legendary of countertenors issued the very essence of melancholy of the 17th century English songs. One has to mention that he was a primary influence in the development of the countertenor voice and as such was a performer who traveled all over the world showing to all that this voice was to be looked upon and accepted as an authentic and singular entity in itself, to which I totally agree. Therefore, he paved the way for an entire generation of singers such as James Bowman, Michael Chance, David Daniels, Gerard Lesne and Phillipe Jarousky to name only a few. This recording is a landmark in music; the singing is skilled; the accompaniment superb and the song selection significant.

This is a superb CD set. Deller is amazing and the Lute Songs have deep feelings, that send us to immemorial ages... If you love old sacred music you must have this Set.

Take Ty's Christmas Old Fashioned Sleigh Ride.......2003-10-12

This beautifully wrought retooling of the originally self-produced, formerly only available on his website, this re-release is beautifully produced and recorded and has an old time, old fashioned Christmas-feel that has been sadly missing from many Christmas tomes of the present, the longer version of "Oh, Come All Ye Faithful" kind of brings a strange, almost out of place, Jamaican background feel.Yet it gives you a feeling of a "hand-across-the nations" feel that has been lost in the true meaning of Christmas and is something in today's world we are desperately lacking and are in need of! But the rest feels like you've just come back from a sleigh ride through a long cold snowny night and are gathered around a roaring fire. This great country voice has so long been restrained by his former poorly promoted label Epic /Sony maybe now if he'll stick with it and not give up as many of his predessors have done before him, maybe this venture with "Riviera" will bring him the recognition he richly deserves. I can only thank God that his ties with Sony have been broken for they have for too long been holding this country vocalist in retraint and hidden away this great gem of a singer as they have done with many other greats that maybe now will have their time to truly shine! I have had the distinct pleasure of meeting the man in person and for those doubters out there he is genuinely as nice as his voice is strong and pure. This CD is an extended version of the original fan club version, the songs are beautifully performed in Ty's, one of a kind baratone verbrato and if this nice little stocking stuffer is any indication of what surprises we are in store for on his new country endeavor teasingly promised in early 2004, you can bet I'll be first in line at my local retailer to buy and support this so unjustly, underrated country miracle and we'll continue to hear much more from this country wonder for many years to come! For those staunch fans, there are some new and also retooled songs done for this version...for the groupies, there is a whole new cover art...front and back...who can resist that mug? The only fault I can find which is no big deal to me is that the song order, for some odd reason, on the back of the cover is in incorrect order. But hey, it is a beautifuly made production with sometimes church choir background vocals. And even more so now worth every penny right down to the title song "A Not So Silent Night" from the Warner Brother's soundtrack "Believe In Santa". Snatch up a copy of this Christmas soon-to-be classic for your Christmas collection. You won't be disappointed! Do yourself a true favor and listen for he first time on a nice stereo with a set of headphones, the vocals are gorgeously articulated and the music breathtaking. One of the true gifts of the Magi!

Smokin'!!.......2006-11-14

This CD absolutely smokes! A collection of incredibly, hot, innovative latin-jazz interpretations of holiday classics. This CD is not designed for quiet fireside contemplation. I played it last year while we trimmed the tree and the entire family ended up bopping around the family room. Truly a lot of fun!

NOTE TO HEF: This is the 21st century. Playboy bunnies on the cover don't sell christmas CD's anymore, at least not to women. Hopefully no one will be turned off by the cover art before giving this great CD a listen.

A ton of fun!!!! A very cool Christmas jazz disc mixed with "Rice and Beans!" That only the artists on the disc can master...However...the only person missing besides Santa...was my man Paquito d'Rivera...A must holiday disc for everyone's Christmas collection!!!! Welcome to the third edition of Kriztal's Reindeer Room series, Not So Silent Night. This is our most diverse collection of holiday music yet - some songs are traditional favorites and others are brand new and written especially for this CD.

In addition to Christmas songs, this year we have also included an original Kwanzaa anthem from Billy Paul Williams and two Chanukah ("Festival of Lights") selections composed and recorded by Craig Taubman. Our Bonus DVD for this volume contains the original audio combined with a beautifully trimmed Christmas tree aglow with lights and a toy train running underneath. Additionally we have coupled our 2 Chanukah tracks with a traditional lighting of the candles on the Menorah.

Volume 3 changes direction but maintains quality.......2007-07-17

Although I prefer the first Reindeer Room CD, volume 3 still has lots to offer. The music has more of a jazz feel to it and "Santa Baby" is the most erotic holiday song I've ever heard. Definitely worth a listen.

A Cool Silent Night Here!.......2007-01-12

When I first purchased Vol. 1 of this series, I was hoping there would be more to come. Vol. 2 was great as is Vol. 3. I keep them in my car the whole holiday season & also play them while I am working all day. Just some great cool grooves & a pleasant twist on holiday favorites. Vol. 3 also has some new numbers as well which fit right into the groove. I figure a year or two for Vol. 4, but I'll be waiting for it!

I wish I could give this 0 stars!.......2007-01-03

First of all, let me say that I absolutely loved Reindeer Room 1 and 2. They are the best holiday albums I've ever heard--upbeat but edgy, perfect for a hip holiday party. Over the years, my husband and I have purchased copies for my family and his, and many of our friends. Everyone has loved both CDs; in fact, Reindeer Room 1 is my father's favorite CD. He plays it year round!

And so I been eagerly watching for a Reindeer Room 3. We all have. We could hardly wait--how could it be anything but fantastic?

Alas, Reindeer Room 3 is the single worst album I have ever purchased. It is so bad that it seemed to be a parody of itself (especially the accompanying DVD). I gave it to my dad for Christmas, and none of us liked a single song. We were all heartbroken.

So, take my advice... do not, under any circumstances, buy this album. You will be very, very sorry!

Feed it to the Reindeers.......2005-12-22

Definately not as good as 1 and 2. If you haven't bought Christmas Re-Mixed 1 or 2, spend your money and buy them instead.

Still a nice background option.......2005-12-09

The dvd is horrid. It's great for drunken laughs, especially the candles as they appear. They should have stuck with the crackling fireplace of volume 2. The music isn't up to par with vol 1 and 2 and this one seems kind of rushed or like something is missing. The ambiance just isn't there for this one. It's great for background at parties or when you're doing holiday-related things, but for simply sitting with a cocktail and enjoying the music for what it is, not with vol 3. Pop in vol 1 or 2 for that.

Placido Domingo can do no wrong. He sheds the glory of his voice over whatever he undertakes, whether it's grand opera or more popular fare, and makes its style and idiom his own with total dedication. Here we find him in a London studio in 1985, with an English orchestra and chorus under a Viennese conductor, bringing back the Golden Age of the Vienna operetta, covering composers from Johann Strauss II, b. 1825, to Oscar Straus, d. 1954. Anyone with memories of that time and place, beware! Your heart will melt with nostalgia as this Spanish-born, Mexican-raised tenor sings of his love and longing for the "city of his dreams" and its beautiful girls. Only in the famous title song (which is not part of an operetta) does this combination seem a bit incongruous, especially since Domingo's German, not to mention his Viennese, hardly sounds native. However, you don't have to be Viennese to succumb to the music and the singing. The program includes several familiar favorites, notably three arias by Lehár (much the best composer after Strauss), two by Emmerich Kálmán, a Hungarian adept at writing in gypsy style, a lovely one each by Oscar Straus and Johann Strauss, and two by the lesser-known Leo Fall. Most of the songs are about love, genuine, frivolous, yearning or frustrated, and it is testimony to Domingo's artistry that he does not condescend even to the most banal; indeed he sings the more serious ones with all the passion of a Radames. Only when the irony is inherent in the song itself does he allow a smile to steal into his voice. The anonymous orchestrations seem more at home in Hollywood than in Vienna, but the orchestra plays beautifully. --Edith Eisler

A much appreciated recording of the classic tenor "arias" of the operetta genre. Good solid recording, excellent orchestra under the baton of Julius Rudel. A must for the operetta fan, as it is not easy to find thoughful and carefully researched collections like this. Placido Domingo is of very good voice and sings these not so challenging material with conviction and commitment. The interpretation of the material is perhaps almost too romantic and over done. Long held phrasing, slurpy singing interferes with the pretty straight forward intent of this material. Perhaps zarzuela meets operetta? But the recording is very enjoyable and does bring back the days of Rudolf Schock and long enjoyable evenings at the Volksoper.
