Marty Raybon, lead singer of the now-defunct Shenandoah, is one of country music's greatest unsung singers. His high-baritone-to-low-tenor voice is imbued with tenderness, honesty, and sweet Southern soulfulness. On his debut solo album, Raybon has counted on his long-time collaborator, Muscle Shoals producer Rick Hall, to light up these 10 tunes, all devoted to love: love lost, love regained, love imagined, and love remembered. Raybon consistently delivers the emotional goods, whether on tortured laments like "If I Didn't Love You" and Hugh Prestwood's achingly lovely "That's That," or songs of sultry nostalgia and romantic remembrance like "Deep Summer (In the Deep South)" (another Prestwood gem) and "Summertown Road." The gentle mix of sensuality, vulnerability, and wounded innocence he serves is bound to touch even the hardest of hearts. --Bob Allen

Playing Time - 42:11 -- Marty Raybon is trying to get past just being "the guy who use to sing with Shenandoah." Recording for Columbia and RCA, that 5-piece country band from Muscle Shoals, Alabama charted in the 1980s and 90s with a number of sensitive ballads and inspired up-tempo numbers about everyday struggles related to love, home, roots and family. While the entertainer still sings songs like "The Church on Cumberland Road" to please audiences, he's also simultaneously making his new mark as an eclectic musician who does it all -- country, bluegrass and gospel. Raised on bluegrass, Marty, his father and two brothers were all once part of The American Bluegrass Express. About 1985, Shenandoah burst on the scene. After winning many country music awards, the powerful and soulful singer was called to honor the Lord, as well as to form his own band called Full Circle, a name that represents his 360-degreemusical evolution and continuing genesis. With a number of trad-grass and gospel music albums under his belt (most recently "The Grass I Grew Up On"), Marty's mostly acoustic country project ("When The Sand Runs Out") has plenty of expressive messages suitable for both bluegrass and country radio airwaves. Written by Mike Curtis, "Who Are You?" is one example -- an engaging song that documents a man's key life stages from infant to rebellious teenager to elderly man stricken with Alzheimer's disease. Raybon likes songs about the continuous and cyclic nature of life, and here's one that tells a story about coming full circle.

Full Circle band members Shane Blackwell (lead guitar), Ashby Frank (mandolin), Glen Harrell (fiddle), and Edgar Loudermilk (bass) are all included. We also hear Nashville bluegrass session men Cody Kilby (guitar), Jim Mills (banjo), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Jim VanCleve (fiddle), Shad Cobb (fiddle), Rob Ickes (Dobro), Andy Hall (Dobro), Mark Fain (bass, guitar), Brent Mason (electric guitar), and Paul Schelton (drums). Liner notes don't acknowledge who plays the piano and synthesizer or who sings the harmony vocals. Perhaps Marty does them all, but he's also been known to sing with his brother Tim. The CD opens with a reflective ballad previously recorded by Buddy Greene. Written by Patricia Ann Walker, "Looking for Suzanne" relates the story of a trucker's twenty-year search for his daughter only to be sadly directed to a street corner to keep on looking. The set makes a rather dramatic jump into a raucous and electric "Shenandoah Saturday Night" where Marty exclaims "everything's goin' our way / the work's all done, and it's time to play." The album's veins run primarily with grassin' blue blood. With drums, the acoustic cover of Dylan's "You Ain't Going Nowhere," Bob McDill's "Come Early Morning," and Tim Menzie's "You Can't Throw Dirt" come across as rollicking folkish offerings with warmly nostalgic flavorings of bands like Poco or Buffalo Springfield. Previously recorded by Rascal Flatts, the title cut makes a strong declaration about living life for all it's worth. You might also remember the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's rendition of "Down the Road."

Singing Josh Leo's "Right Where I Belong," Marty says that he doesn't need much - one good woman, a few good friends, supper on the table, and a sermon on Sunday morning to keep strong. Of course, we also know that being on stage drives Marty's ambition. The album's closing numbers reinforce his beliefs about love, faith, family, and life's adventures ahead. With the guidance of the Lord, Marty's vision is to play many kinds of venues and cross-market his genre-spanning music. Still driving in the fast lane, Marty Raybon continues to successfully present cohesive, enticing songs that showcase his impressive vocal talent. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars Shenandoah Lead Vocalist Returns to Bluegrass with Style.......2004-06-25

The road between Marty's hometown on the outskirts of Jacksonville Florida and Nashville is populated by many who flit back and forth between "mainstream country" which will get airplay, sell records and fill arenas, and the music they love and grew up on: acoustic Bluegrass.

Marty was well-known to the North Florida Bluegrass circles before heading for Nashville to record many hits with the fine Country Group Shenandoah. Shenandoah has gone the way of the LP album and Marty returns to his roots here to record an album of Bluegrass that has great tunes, hot pickers, and harmony vocals that will raise the hair on the back of your neck - all woven in with the soulful baritone of Marty Raybon. "Ghost in this House" was recorded by Shenandoah, then redone by Alison Krauss, but here Marty redoes it in an "unplugged" version that demonstrates that Marty Raybon OWNS this song.

Up-tempo tunes are mixed in with ballads and newer material is mixed in with old Jimmy Martin and Flatt and Scruggs.

In the studio musicians frequently concentrate so much on the *perfectness* of their playing that they forget how important it is to the performance to have fun, enjoy it, and "let it hang out" a little. I don't mean to imply that the musicians and Mr. Raybon himself don't perform perfectly on this recording - they do - I just want to make it clear that they also obviously had a doggone good time doing it, and that shows up on every track.

5 out of 5 stars An inspired album that will knock your bluegrass socks off!.......2004-01-16

Since his long and successful stint with the band Shenandoah, singer Marty Raybon has released a duo album (with his brother), some gospel albums, a solo country album, and now a peppy bluegrass album. Raybon is a talented music veteran who was solidly grounded in bluegrass music early in his life as a member of his family band, the American Bluegrass Express. He then moved to Nashville and went country in 1984. He has shown that he can choose good material, assemble first-rate musicians, write excellent songs, and sing them with genuine and warm sincerity. "Full Circle" offers newly-arranged traditional favorites from Flatt and Scruggs (Down the Road), Bill Monroe (Rocky Road Blues, White House Blues), and Jimmy Martin (Home Run Man, Prayer Bells of Heaven, The Last Song). In addition, the album includes remakes of two Shenandoah hits (Ghost in this House, and Next To You, Next To Me) and one cut from his solo country album of 2000 (Ghost in this House). Three new songs were written or co-written by Raybon (That's One, All in the Hands of Jesus, Webster's Definition) including one (Everything) featuring guest vocalist Sonya Isaacs.

The album also features some stellar bluegrass musicians with David Talbot (banjo), Bryan Sutton (guitar and mandolin), Donnie Allen (rhythm guitar), Shad Cobb (fiddle), Rob Ickes (resonator guitar), and Terry Smith (bass). Harmony vocalist Paul Brewster also assists. The result is an inspired bluegrass album that will knock your socks off. "Full Circle" offers some grandacious 'grass. In addition, the album has the added bonus of various bright and breezy, slower acoustic country offerings interspersed between the high-geared bluegrass. Watch for Marty Raybon on the road. You'll be in for a highly entertaining and professional show once he assembles a bluegrass band to tour and promote this album project. It's great to see him back among the bluegrass fold. I have enjoyed this CD and I am very upset that I am not hearing Marty Raybons songs on the radio. Everyone can relate to this music. Some are lively, some tender, and some from heartbreak.
This cd became stuck in my trucks cd player, I was so glad it was Martys. I listened to it for two weaks and did not get tired of it. I listen to it often, I love his voice. I feel that Marty Raybon sings his songs with such feeling, as though he has lived each song.
    I highly recommend this cd.

We recognize the voice right off. How can you not know the voice behind the Shenandoah hits? I listen to this album at least twice a week. I like Marty's voice because I feel he sings sincerity better than anyone in the industry. "That's That" written by Hugh Prestwood is lyrically perfect and no one could sing it better than Marty. This man deserves to be heard on a major label. Marty is one of if not the most talented singer around and does not get the credit he deserves. To me this album was underproduced but with Marty's voice and talent, it is not noticable unless you are a music critic like me but it still gets five stars from me because of the material on this album. Yea, I think Marty should not have left Shenandoah but they too were wearing out and it is time this guy gets the attention he deserves as the major singer on his own. Buy it.. it is worth every cent.

4 out of 5 stars One of Nashville's Finest Singers.......2000-09-20

Marty Raybon's new self titled album is awsome. All of the songs on it are very good. I especially love "Searching For The Missing Peace", and "Sittin' On A Goldmine". Marty was the best when he was the lead singer in the gruop Shenandoah. I think they were the best group. But that's the reason why he gets 4 stars instead of 5 for this album in my book. Because he was just a little better as a member of Shenandoah.
