When Hank Williams sails into "(I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle," the first cut on this compilation of roll-in-misery blues, you know it's going to be a two-bottle night. Can anything else on earth sound this mournful? Maybe just "Ramblin' Man," another cut from these 16 heartfelt tracks, some of which find Hank stylistically borrowing from Ernest Tubb and Jimmie Rodgers. With the weight of the world on his bony shoulders, it's no wonder Hank slouched when he sang. Yet such tunes as "Moanin' the Blues" and "My Bucket's Got a Hole in It" also carry an undertone of celebration. "Nobody had the talent to make suffering enjoyable like Hank Williams," Kris Kristofferson once observed. You can say that again, Hoss.

Absolutely Amazing!!! ('specially for white folk).......2004-03-27
This is an absolute must!!! I have never heard such passionate singing of spirituals from non-black choirs. Perhaps that is attributed to Shaw's minister roots. As usual, the sonority of Shaw's singers is second to none. This is a fun CD that all can enjoy...not just the choral buffs who know just how good Shaw and his choirs are!!!
Not Up to Shaw's Usual Standard.......2002-03-23
Maybe just personal taste. I don't find the arrangements and vocalizing as interesting and satisfying as "Sea Chanties" and "23 Glee Club Favorites", the latter setting a standard never equaled.
A Must CD for Choral Music Lovers.......2001-01-03
Amazing Grace is a very appropriate title for this recording. For those of you who love Sacred Harp , Southern Harmony and Spirituals, you will revel in the folk traditions of this album. Parker and Shaw arrangements, and sometimes just one or the other are so well done. The singers, of course, do an excellent job of making music under Shaw's direction. "Hark I Hear.." arr. by Parker is becoming a standard for choruses and this album will help you hear why. "If I've got my ticket" by Shaw is a wonderful exchange between solo and chorus. You will be playing this CD over and over once you hear it.
Soul-stirring.......2000-08-10
I have thoroughly enjoyed this CD. The thoughtful and meditative, "What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul" sends the listener awe-struck to the foot of the cross. The triumphant "Ride on King Jesus!" reminds the listener of final victory. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates musical and cultural heritage or for anyone who appreciates religious music.

Pretty slo' tight jam.......2005-06-05
This song had me rollin' since it came out. It deals w/ alot of situations that the man has to face. Y'know R. Kelly will be telling the truth in his songs like a preacher or a minister sends in a message to the Word of God. He sure has Ernie and Ron Isley doin the collab on this 1. Loves those guys to death from the group (who are my idols) The Isley Bros.
Can't say enuff 'bout this. But it sho has sum remixes and sum a bit you might relax and enjoy. So sit back and enjoy R. Kelly.
Down Low (Nobody Has to Know)? yeah right.......2005-05-03
Everyone found out. How are gonna say it ain't you on the tape. "WE KNOW WHAT YOU LOOK LIKE. THAT'S YOU. THERE'S A SOUL TRAIN AWARD RIGHT NEXT TO THE BED BEST R & B '98 THAT YOU" (Chris Rock)
He truely puts the R in R&B.......2004-02-10
When you need to sit down an have that special moment with you partner there's nothing like throwing in some Kelly. He's by far the greastest R&B singer of his time. His albums ensures you that it will be a special time with whoever you're listening to them with.
Smooth Jam.......2003-02-20
R.Kelly has some tight Re-Mixes&Balances things out here.together With Ronald Isley&Ernie Isley they create one of the Most Baddest Jams over the past few years.real tight set here.

Michelle Malone is awesome in person as well.......2005-01-27
This CD shows Michelle's TRUE talent. You will not be dissapointed!!! Get the CD.... and listen over and over (though, I don't think you'd have a choice once you own it)
Lock it in and Rip the Knob Off!.......2003-11-21
You will never be disappointed with the power and soul that comes forth off of Michelle Malone's latest. Her well crafted lyrics are belted out with passion over her precision guitar work, and her harmonica winds in and out of Linda's (the drummer's)perfect backbeats. Buy the album and get to her shows as quickly as possible!
Fantastic!.......2003-11-20
I had heard of Michelle Malone only as a roving member of the Indigo Girls' band. I was fortunate enough to see her (and them) live, where she played a few songs off this new album. I loved it so much I bought it from her at intermission (and got it signed) and got the chance to tell her (and Linda--the drummer on all the songs) how much I enjoyed them. This is a real southern-y rock-y soulful album with a lot of heart and some humor. I've listend to this album continuously since then, and it's wonderful--but she was even better live!
michelle breaks new ground!.......2003-09-24
if you have known of michelle malone for a while, this cd is probably going to shock you (in a good way). this isn't homegrown, beneath the devil moon, or even hello out there. this is different. as always, malone's powerful voice is the centerpiece. her superb songwriting just keeps on getting better. but this time, accompanying her is a full band (the lowdown georgia revue). as usual, she has some very special guest vocals (and mandolin) by none other than amy ray and emily saliers (indigo girls). basically, this is a different, more rockin' michelle malone. but what makes michelle malone, well, michelle malone, is still there -- the amazing and inspiring lyrics and of course *that* voice. this is also michelle's first album on daemon since her band de soleil days.
linda bolley, michelle's drummer is the BEST drummer out there. seriously.
watch for michelle's tour to come to a town near you. you MUST hear her live!

Album Description
Rod Piazza and The Mighty Flyers have won or been nominated for just about every award that can be bestowed upon a blues band, played literally thousands of gigs around the world, recorded over a dozen highly acclaimed releases and along the way virtually created a new style of blues - a combination of low-down Chicago grit, suave West Coast swing and jazz and the rhythmic drive of the best early R&B and rock & roll. Quite simply, Rod Piazza and The Mighty Flyers are one of the best, most professional and most distinctive bands in blues today!
On their latest release Piazza and his Mighty Flyers get back to the roots of what drew them into the blues in the first place while at the same time investigating the funkier side of things by bringing in a lineup of very special guests including guitarists' Kid Ramos and Phil Guy, as well as a rhythm section made up of veterans Finis Tasby on bass and James Gadson on drums. Johnny Dyer also makes a special appearance on a vocal duet with Rod on the song "Got To Find My Baby." With strong originals and well-chosen covers this is Piazza's most rootsy, adventurous album ever.

Singer Toni Price's two major influences, Nashville and Bonnie Raitt, are more than audible on her fourth album, Lowdown and Up. While Price's voice is also reminiscent of the same vocalists who influenced Raitt, there's little doubt as to where her original inspiration came from. Price mixes her blues with country and folk, a blend that will appeal to some and disenchant others. For those who like it, there's plenty here to like: a strong, but never overwhelming vocal style, and an expressive range that runs from seductive ("Comes Love") to upbeat ("Loserville Blues") to gentle ("Anything"). Price, who moved from Nashville to Austin in 1989, has incorporated a definite Texan flavor into her sound, and she's one of many artists who could rise to prominence as the Austin music scene continues to draw national attention. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
my favorite Toni disc.......2003-12-24
I read these reviews to get comparative data on which disc to buy if I own few or none of an artist's work. So, from that perspective, I am writing to rate this disc as Toni's best, and that's saying alot because she is one of the most consistent artists around. All the others are tied for second with the exception of "Hey" which is my least favorite. "Comes Love" and "Red River" are particular stand outs. Also for new Toni Fans, Her voice has weathered beautifully over the years. On her first disc "Swim Away" she has a richer, fuller, young blues belter voice, and on her most recent "Born to be Blue" she sounds more like a cross between early Bonnie Raitt and Billie Holiday with a little Sue Foley thrown in. Maybe that's why I like "Low Down", it's right in the middle.
Winnerville.......2003-08-06
Toni Price sings so well on this 1999 set and makes it seem so effortless that this is a disc to which one can repeatedly return. The opener "Walk Out the Front Door" is a driving country rocker with Larry Fulcher on bass and Frosty Smith on drums combining for a great pulsing track. Toni's is the fourth version of "Comes Love" in my collection, joining Joni Mitchell, Dan Hicks and new jazz sensation Peter Cincotti. Toni's take is positively mournful with Johnny Gimble's fiddle wailing plaintively. Gwil Owen's "Anything" is lovely ballad with a beautiful melody; Toni's understated vocals grace the arrangement. "Loserville Blues" is a fast Texas swing boogie woogie that Toni's excellent performance transforms into "Winnerville." "Feel Like Cryin'" rocks out while the title track bounces along like Leon Redbone coming awake. "Wishing Well" is another lovely track that is a great song. The CD concludes with the moody "Why Is Love Like That?" Toni's set here is filled with blockbuster performances and great tunes. U snoozes U loses! Enjoy!
Great Find!.......2001-08-24
I don't listen to this kind of music any more, but heard the "Foolin' 'round" cut on our local NPR station and couldn't get it out of my head. After purchasing the disk, it's now one of my desert island goodies.
Blues, Jazz and beyond..........2001-02-05
I don't get the comparisons to Bonnie Raitt, really. Toni has her own voice. Thing is, her voice changes radically, from song to song. Sometimes she sounds a little like Sue Foley (on "Out The Front Door" which Bonnie did first), sometimes Ricki Lee Jones ("Remember Me?"), and yeah, I guess at times she gets some of the Bonnie vibe going ("Rusty Old Red River"). But this woman changes from song to song. The more you listen, the more you learn. I really love "Foolin' Round" (mid-tempo jazz) and "Don't You Think I Feel It Too?" (performed as a folksy waltz). Thank the stars for recorded music: Toni does not travel around much. But we can enjoy her music and I want more SOON!
Worked Completely.......2001-02-02
Listened to Toni Price and her proffessional crew on Austin City Limits which prompted me to run out and buy this Album. The mix and content of the songs were well chosen and extremely well done by all involved. I have listened to the album several times and find myself replaying some of the selections mentally while I am involved in some task or activity.
I have to admit that her interview also sold me as shown on Austin City Limits. She reminds me of a Gal that would sit down and tell you like it is. That seems to be her style of singing as well. A very gifted lady singing and capturing the theme and intent of each song. Don't think I would enjoy one of her down moods. But would love the down to earth attitude. Glad she is now part of my CD collection.

Best of Shearing AND Kings Singers.......2002-05-26
This is a fantastic recording. There are interesting arrangements from some of the best popular music arrangers, including Richard Rodney Bennett, Paul Hart and Daryl Runswick, not to mention Shearing's great new 5/4 version of his best-loved song Lullaby of Birdland, which begins with a jazz version of Brahms' Lullaby.
The Kings Singers are in fine form, with their flawless intonation and meticulous attention to creating a great sound.
Each track features just the sextet, Shearing and a double bass (played by Neil Swainson), except for One For My Baby, which adds John Harle on saxophone. That track is one of the three terrific Daryl Runswick arrangements included on the album.
Other stand-outs are:
The-Half-of-It-Dearie Blues, which sounds very similar to their much earlier version of it, i.e. sensitive and sensuous.
Gershwin's The Real American Folk Song (is a rag)
Daryl Runswick's interpretations of I Got Rhythm and Anyplace I Hang My Hat
Over the Rainbow
It is worth getting Amazon to hunt for this album for you: it is one of the very best of many fine albums the performers have made. Getting them together for this disc was a first-class idea.

What ??.......2006-12-10
The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!
Nice Voice, but not a nice person...(read on, pls.).......2006-01-07
Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!
A let down.......2004-09-24
I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.
The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19
This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

Dj Rectangle!!!!.......2003-06-07
If you don't have any Dj Rec cd's than you need to go cop them. All around the best mix cd's you can get. They may not be as up to date as Kay Slay or Clue or Kool Kid, but for one there isn't any talking over the song or shout outz like those dj's and the songs are actually mixed and scratched in(advanced scratching might I add) instead of just fading in the song.Just get one that has some songs you like and slip it in at a party, you won't be disappointed believe me! Don't forget to check out his new mixtapes Faders of Fury,TurnTable Terrorwrist, Turntable Torture, and Vinyl Combat 2, all available at Cellarnoise.com.

Another can't miss effort by rectangle.......2000-03-31
If you have any affinity whatsoever for hip-hop music, you need a DJ Rectangle CD. This is the first one I ever bought, and while it may be a lesser effort for him (maybe), it certainly solidifies his position as hip-hop's best DJ. Seamless transitions and the best intros on wax. For a party on your stoop, this is the poop!
