Garth Brooks's friend and sideman Tyler England carried a stigma of one-hit hat act after his 1995 Top 10 single "Should've Asked Her Faster." That was regrettable, since his traditionalist integrity surpassed anything in Brooks's own musical arsenal. That hasn't changed four years after England's last album. And Brooks, producer of his comeback effort, wisely accentuates his friend's honky-tonk strengths, starting with the lighthearted "My Baby No Esta Aqui No More" and continuing through "She's Gonna Miss Me When He's Gone" and Bruce Robison's "She Don't Care About Me." "Should've Asked Her Faster," remade here as a duet with Steve Wariner, smokes nearly as much as the original hit. England's three story-songs--"I Knew I Loved You," Robison's moving "Travelin' Soldier," and "Collect from Wichita"--are models of finesse and thoughtful understatement. Reviving John Conlee's obscure 1979 ballad "Forever," he fearlessly maneuvers through a string arrangement that could overwhelm a lesser vocalist. Not only does this magnificent effort ratify England's talent, it also reflects well on Brooks as a producer. --Rich Kienzle

The ethical questions surrounding this final album in the American Recordings series are as unavoidable as they are, ultimately, peripheral. While the vocal tracks were recorded in the months just prior to Johnny Cash's passing in September 2003, the arrangements weren't undertaken until two years later. And though producer Rick Rubin had become a trusted friend, the Man in Black wasn't around to approve or disapprove, let alone guide, the final sessions. However, if the pure power of these recordings doesn't quiet the skeptics, nothing will. With Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench and slide guitar session pro Smokey Hormel on board (all three of whom appear on earlier Cash albums), along with guitarists Matt Sweeney and Johnny Polansky, the sound is stately and acoustic, but rarely staid, even as the dynamics of earlier recordings in the series are absent. Instead, the songs have a measured, elegiac intensity, the sound of musicians choosing their notes carefully and making just the right choices.

The songs Cash sings are, unsurprisingly, confessional and reflective: his mortality and his mistakes, his maker and his salvation, and the loss of his wife June and the end of his career may have weighed on his mind, but in these songs he both embodies and transcends his personal history. On "God's Gonna Cut You Down," as the musicians clap and stomp behind him, his voice cuts through the air like that same avenging hand. On the new original "Like the 309"--the last song Cash ever wrote--he cops to being short of breath, and that voice becomes a metaphor for what each of us will one day face. On Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Read My Mind," Rubin flirts with overwhelming the damp bittersweetness of Cash's phrasing in tasteful atmospherics, but the voice is implacable, hitting and finding notes one never expected he'd have the will to find. Likewise, it's hard to believe this is his first recording of Ian Tyson's "Four Strong Winds"; the elemental narrative seems to have been written for him. Two songs, however, Cash has recorded before: the born-again hymn "I Came to Believe" and the final spiritual, "I'm Free from the Chain Gang Now." The latter especially is a definitive testament, as is his version of Bruce Springsteen's "Further On (Up the Road)." "One sunny morning we'll rise, I know / And I'll meet you further on up the road," he sings. If only, John, if only. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars He called my name and my heart stood still, when He said, "John, go do My will!".......2007-07-11

This, obviously, is the fifth album in Johnny Cash's American Recordings series. Johnny Cash recorded several dozen songs after his wife June died and up until his death. A couple of years later, enough time had past so that producer Rick Rubin finally felt comfortable listening to the tapes. He chose twelve of the songs to be included on this album. It's a very powerful but sad album. Johnny's voice was very ragged by this point, but that just adds to the poignancy. Some people have conjectured that Cash knew he didn't have long to live, due to the type of songs incuded here. But I think you have to keep in mind the fact that the songs here are the ones that Rick Rubin chose to include, out of the many that Cash recorded. There will be an American VI, which reportedly will feature "lighter" songs from the same same sessions as this album. If American VI is only half as good as American V, it will be well worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars Goodbye Old Friend.......2007-06-27

If you like Johnny Cash, then you have to have this CD. It's a chance to say goodbye to an old friend. No, I never met the Man In Black, but I did see him in concert, I have read his books, I have watched his rare TV and theatrical movie performances, I have enjoyed his television show - and I have listened to his music. Goodbye John . . . and Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Farewell Album.......2007-06-21

Johnny Cash croons like a dying old man, and I mean that in the most endearing, Johnny Cash loving way. If you like Johnny, you must have this album. The emotion sung in this album is sincere and that of his last wishes! It's a must have for any Cash lover!

5 out of 5 stars A hundred highways.......2007-05-20

I am by no means a fan of country music. Most of it does not interest me. One of the few artists I love and can proudly admit is Johnny Cash. Johnny has such a wonderfully rich, warm voice that always brings a tear to my eye. I recently came across his last album "American V: A Hundred Highways" at my local library. I didn't think he could outdo "American IV: The Man Who Came Around" but he did with this album. The twelve song album is a haunting reminder of the legendary singer/songwriter. I could hear in his voice that the man in black was coming towards the end of his life. I could hear the weariness in his voice. I mean that in a good way. I think his weariness added an emotional depth to each song that is rarely heard in music nowadays. Rick Rubin did a great job of maintaining an intimate, raw sound to the album. I felt like I was in the studio watching Johnny performing. I loved every song. Johnny sang with such heartfelt conviction that it broke my heart. May the man in black rest in peace. He will always be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Johnny Cash was "The Man"..........2007-05-14

Great album, even if Johnny's vocals were added posthumously,,, honestly , you can't tell, they have done it so well. For an almost heart-rending look into the true soul of the man nearly on his deathbed, give this album a listen

From Amazon.co.uk

Less than two years after the death of her mentor, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris recorded her first album for Reprise. Pieces of the Sky inaugurated a suite of four mid-'70s albums and a surprising number of hits: her sound was clearly traditional, but also tastefully up-to-date with folk-rock and singer/songwriter styles, and her crystalline, febrile vocals took standards such as "Love Hurts" and "If I Could Only Win Your Love" back up the charts. This compilation brings together her biggest hits, and shows why Harris is important and why she continues to make adventurous country music. Through unfailingly tasteful song selection, brilliant occasional songwriting, and her cool, velvety soprano, Harris extended Gram Parsons's vision of "cosmic American music" and made it her own. --Roy Kasten

Album Description

Masterful at rock, country, folk, bluegrass, and more, Emmylou Harris is one of the most distinctive and visionary voices in contemporary music. The artist's lucid, achingly gorgeous vocals and a string of celebrated albums-many featuring her acclaimed "Hot Band"-have earned Harris eleven Grammys and made this alt-country/roots-rock innovator a legend in her own time.

Alison Krauss's second Rounder effort builds on the promise of her debut, further honing her blend of traditional and contemporary, an artistic tactic that would have a huge impact on bluegrass and bluegrass audiences throughout the 1990s. Still only 17 when she waxed this one, Krauss handles old-time rags, gospel favorites, and modern country with equal flair and almost-annoying perfection. This was 1989 and her widespread critical acclaim had not yet translated into commercial acceptance, but Two Highways catches her at a time just before the polish began to sand away the rougher edges of her sound. Rough, however, is a relative term because, then as now, it's impossible for this phenom to ever sound anything but smooth. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Along the Road to Fame.......2006-09-10

I was lucky enough to see this young lady (and young she was!) on tour twice when this album had just come out, at the Kalamazoo State Theater along with Hot Rize!, another good old fashioned bluegrass treat. These were the days when Krauss was more famous as a fiddle wunderkind than a pop sensation, and when her voice sounded like a young Brenda Lee or Jimmy Martin's kid sister, rather than the limp but no doubt moneymaking dishrag it does today (Krauss's best contribution these days is her production work with new groups like Nickel Creek.)

These songs....none of which were written by Krauss herself, by the way...are fine examples of what in the eighties was termed "newgrass", a bluer than bluegrass, saucy treatment of American string band tradition. The best example might be Union Station's version of (wait for it) the Allman Brothers' "Midnight Rider", which as an Allmans fan I like better than the original. Many of the other songs are written by John Pennell, founder of the band, still a member, and one who can be credited with discovering Krauss' talent as early as five years before this disc was recorded.

The personnel of Union Station has morphed throughout the years, and a few of the songs are led vocally by musicians who are no longer in the band. But most are Krauss' babies, and she shows them off like a proud country mama. If you have never had a chance to hear Alison Krauss during her early years on the road, do check this, her solo album, or both, out. Your heart will leap to the whirlwind melodies, and you will thank yourself, believe me.

4 out of 5 stars not my type.......2006-03-17

I ordered this for my husband, i am not familiar with the music here; i think i remember my uncle singing some of songs on this album. However, I am impressed that we found it at Amazon, my husband had been looking for a couple of the songs for a long long time.........

5 out of 5 stars unequalled since..........2005-07-01

This is a great album, really extraordinary. It was my introduction to AK and Union Station, and I have to say that nothing I've heard from them since has lived up to it. It features her fiddle playing as much as her vocals, unlike some later albums, and doesn't have the sickly sweet quality of some later music. One of my top 10 favorite albums ever. Worth it just for Midnight Rider.

5 out of 5 stars In her second album, Alison hits Full Stride.......2004-06-26

Still only 17 in 1989 when this, her second album, was released, Alison Krauss made a mark that has kept her atop the heap in Bluegrass ever since. More of a "band" album than her debut, this one also features guitar phenom Jeff White on lead vocals on a few tunes and the instrumentals are among the best Alison has ever recorded, mainly due to Mr. White's hot flat-picking. Old Beaumont Rag got a good workout here!

The album features both traditional material like "Wild Bill Jones" (sung by Jeff White - now performed exquisitely by Dan Tyminski in Alison's Band), and innovative arrangements of material from other genre's. The Allman Brother's "Midnight Flyer" gets turned from rhythmic yearning ballad into a banjo-driven barn burner, with vocals that soar and harmonies that are absolutely hair-raising.

Alyson's voice is noticeably smoother than in the debut album and I would guess it was about HERE that critics began saying that she had the voice of an angel.

I don't personally know what an angel sounds like, but it would be a HIGH compliment to say one sounded like Alison Krauss on "Two Highways".

5 out of 5 stars Classic bluegrass from young Alison.......2003-12-23

This was Alison's second album but the first on which her band gets title billing. The musicians were Alison Krauss (fiddle), Mike Harman (banjo), Jeff White (guitar), John Pennell (bass), Jerry Douglas (dobro) and Brent Truitt (mandolin). Jerry and Brent were not members of Union station but were brought in as guests on the recordings. Alison was just 17 when these tracks were recorded but she was already the supreme performer. Jeff White sings lead on Wild Bill Jones, As lovely as you, Lord don't forsake me and Midnight rider, with Alison and Mike providing harmony vocals. Beaumont rag and Windy city rag are instrumentals. On all other tracks, Alison sings lead vocal, with Jeff and Mike providing harmony vocals.

The last two tracks will be the most familiar. Teardrops will kiss the morning dew was originally recorded by the Osborne brothers, an excellent bluegrass outfit, and was also covered by Billie Jo Spears. Both those versions are somewhat obscure, but Alison's own version was selected for inclusion on Now that I've found you A collection, the hugely successful compilation of Alison's music. If you are thinking of buying this album, you surely own that compilation already - and if not, you should buy that first. The final track is a cover of Gregg Allman's classic Midnight rider, here adapted to bluegrass - brilliantly.

You are not likely to know many (if any) of the first ten tracks but they are definitely worth a listen. They are a varied mix of ballads and up-tempo but the overall feel of the album is upbeat. Possibly the best is Heaven's bright shore though it is difficult to pick out highlights on an album of such quality.

If you already have Now that I've found you A collection and you want to explore Alison's early music further, this is for you.

This homespun documentary soundtrack celebrates a circle of some of the finest songwriters in progressive country, just as they were starting to come into their own. The intimate informality of the mid-'70s performances finds Guy Clark at the center of that circle of Texans relocated to Nashville, with the then-unknown Rodney Crowell and Steve Earle among his acolytes. All of them sound impossibly, irrepressibly young, though the early songs of Townes Van Zandt (particularly "Waitin' 'Round to Die") already carried the world on their back. Among the highlights are a Christmas Eve party at the Nashville home of Guy and Susannah Clark, where the singalong ranged from his "That Old Time Feeling" to the Crowell-led finale of a spirited "Silent Night." It's fascinating to hear these artists in their formative stages, making music for fun and for each other, in light of what they would become. --Don McLeese

Album Description

20 UNRELEASED RECORDINGS FROM THE BIRTH OF AMERICANA

In 1975, the film Heartworn Highways documented the emerging singer-songwriter scene in Nashville and Austin, capturing intimate performances by artists like Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell while they were still struggling to be heard. 30 years later, we have restored these now historic recordings to their original, unedited length and are making them available for the first time ever, in all of their ragged, whiskey-soaked glory.

Featuring the first recordings ever made by Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell and John Hiatt, available for the very first time and previously unreleased acoustic performances by Townes Van Zandt, David Allan Coe, Guy Clark and Steve Young.

Every track is previously unreleased, restored to its original length, and mastered to audiophile quality.

5 out of 5 stars Heart worn Highways is TERRIFIC!.......2006-08-05

What a great time capsule from 1976 - Heartworn Highways. I absolutely LOVED this cd (and dvd). Found out that I love songs by Guy Clark, Larry Jon Wilson, Rodney Crowell, Townes Van Zandt. Really interesting stories, you enjoy it tremendously. At first, I didn't know any of the artists' music (except for Steve Earle) and now I'm a big fan of these folks. Favorite tracks: "L.A. Freeway," "Ohopee River Bottomland," "Bluebird Wine," and "Texas Cookin." GREAT, GREAT stuff. Do yourself a favor and get the DVD too.

4 out of 5 stars scraggy country.......2006-07-17

The intimate feeling of this recording makes for a unique experience. The soft ballads, thumping harmonies and silly between-song banter all fuse into a wonderful downhome jam session, except it's not your home. You just get to pretend it is. Some of the songs get a little cheesy, but others, like Blueberry Wine, are light-hearted sing alongs perfect for a summer day.

5 out of 5 stars It won't get better than this!.......2006-06-22

Just starting, fresh and new a number of great songwriters caught for all time. I stumbled across this in the store and it came home with me. The voices are very young but the songs are mature and show what will be. The 26 tracks just seem to keep getting better and Silent Night is almost a perfect ending. If you like this music, you will like this CD and play it often.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-06-06

One of the really great things about the movie is the sound quality, and somehow I actually think the soundtrack isn't quite as good. Sounds a little hollow to my very untrained ear, not quite as warm. And I also prefer all of the versions of the songs used in the movie to the ones made available here.

BUT, it's still fantastic. Great, inspiring songwriting. A must have, but not quiite as much of a must have as the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Old School - Texas Style.......2006-04-17

you can almost smell the whiskey, beer and dust when these great Texas neo-traditionalists spin tales of love, heart-ache and BBQ!

These are the second generation outlaws (after Willie, Waylon, et al) that sent Nashville a select digit by writing fine song instead of the glossy turds thay were (still) producing.

Just when it feels like the end days of hard, imaginative country music are upon us, a release such as this appears and dashes despair. With her first outing for Rounder, Myles has made one of 1998's finest--setting her own standard for country music at millennium's end, writing every song save two classics, and singing all hell out of every line. There's nothing slight, nothing wasted in these 12 songs; the original material is unfailingly strong and effortlessly inventive. Her band--featuring Bob Gothar, Pete Anderson, Marty Rifkin, Gary Brandin, and a propulsive rhythm section--marshals various styles and colors. Shades of progressive bluegrass and Tex-Mex emerge, as well as echoes of Buddy Holly's sound, resulting in taut country rock that nods as often to the Byrds and the Burrito Brothers as to Myles's formative Bakersfield background. --Roy Francis Kasten

Where has Heather Myles been? Why hasn't she been singing on the "country" stations?
We have enjoyed her music...REAL COUNTRY music. She is right up there with Kitty Wells and Loretta!!
Thank goodness there are still real country singers now and then.
I am going to buy more of her CDs. Keep singing country Heather. We love your music.

5 out of 5 stars REAL country.......2006-11-07

Heather Myles, along with Amber Digby, Miss Leslie, and Becky Hobbs, is one of the few real country female singers. This isn't Faith or Shania or any of the other imposters; this is old-fashioned, 100-proof, honky tonk country. This is a great CD, and amazingly, it's her second best; as wonderful as this music is, "Sweet Talk and Good Lies" is even better.

5 out of 5 stars Why no Radio Play?????????.......2006-02-05

I absolutely abhor new "country music"; it lacks any soul, has forgotten its roots, and is completely disposable. And, the problem is not just with the producers and Nashville, as the majority of the performers lack talent as well. But once in awhile, someone comes along to breathe a little life into modern country music. Heather Myles is one of the very few bright spots in today's country scene, and you owe it to yourself to listen to this Cd. Heather has a voice that combines the unabashed sincerity of Loretta Lynn with the vocal stylings of Donna Fargo; throw in a big dose of real Bakersfield Sound, and you have Heather Myles. This CD contains 12 numbers, and every single song is heads above anything you'll hear on today's "country" radio. There are two really fine singles here that deserve the highest praise: "No One is Gonna Love You Better" is a superb duet with none other than Merle Haggard, and "Playing Every Honk Tonk in Town". I will go as far to say that Heather Myles should be placed in the list of the Top 5 female singers to arrive on the country scene in the past 30 years. And after you listen to this album, you'll realize that list doesn't include Shania or Faith. A+++++++

3 out of 5 stars She's good,but................2005-09-10

With all the five star reviews,it looks like the entire extended family chimed in,so! I ain't gonna say anything derogatory just in case you all come lookin' for me,if you get my drift ? I think this lady has enormous talent, and given the time she will be one of the greats. She still has a way to go,and I believe she will wind up with a huge name in the business.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent traditional country, California style.......2005-01-12

Heather, one of many great country singers from California, is a passionate, soulful singer-songwriter who sticks (at least on this album) to a solid, traditional country sound albeit with other influences. Those influences, limited as they are, are from rockabilly and R+B rather than mainstream pop. Heather wrote ten of the twelve songs here, the exceptions being the covers of Kiss an angel good morning (Charley Pride) and I'll be there if you ever want me (Ray Price) - the latter song was also a major country hit for Gail Davies in the eighties.

Heather's own songs are outstanding, including You're gonna love me one day (about a man who doesn't love her - yet), No one is gonna love you better (a duet with Merle Haggard), Mr Lonesome (about a man who isn't very good company) and Who did you call darling (about an unfaithful man).

Pete Anderson, Dwight Yoakam's producer, plays lead guitar on this album, which certainly should appeal to most of Dwight's fans although the music here has less of a rock influence than most of Dwight's albums. As such, this will appeal to those die-hard traditionalists who feel that Dwight is not for them.

5 out of 5 stars Sam.......2006-12-29

Strange Highways and Holy Diver are the best Dio albums by far. There will always be a certain contingent of Dio fans who hate Strange Highways for reasons unkown to me, though most site Tracy G. However, Mr. G is one of those guitarist - like a young Tony Iommi - who obvously sold his soul for Rock and Roll! His riffs are satanic - in the good way. Thank God RJD didn't try to put another sackless "virtuoso" like the crapmaster from Lock up the Woves on this album. Tracy G has the most in your face solos since Vivian. Sure he doesn't play at high velocity but who cares? It is the spirit that matters. Not buying in? Then ask yourself: who is cooler Hendrix or yngwie? I rest my case. It always pains me to think that a small vocal minority - the D and D variety of Dio fans - bitched so much about Strange Highways that he totally changed his direction. This Orson-Scott-Cardesque stuff of the last several years is anything but magic no matter how many references he makes to conjuring wizards. I am a grown man. I do not want a Dio album with topics best suited for anime or T-shirts with dragons. I want Firehead blaring from my speakers and that freak monster on the cover of the album on a a black shirt - hell maybe even tatooed on my nuts. Yes the album is that good. The only songs that perhaps belong on Lock up the Wolves or perhaps Dream Evil are the last two. Buy this album if you like RJD and you will see that if you tear yourself away from nostalgia, this is his greatest recording. Just stop listenin before Hears to You and Blood from a Stone.

4 out of 5 stars Not that bad.......2006-12-22

Saw Dio live in Austin on this albun until F**cin APD ran him off for being too loud (Dio too loud LOL). It is my favorite album next to the first and Lock up the Wolves. Yes Tracy G is no Craig Goldie or Vivian Campbell (why Def Leppard) but this album rocks!!!! Pain is my favorite next to Give her the Gun (Dio always has an abuse song of some kind). Yes uneven but it has some of his heaviest rockers ever espcially since Jeff Pilson (ex-Dokken) played bass. Ignore the lyrics and rock out!!!

4 out of 5 stars Dio's best album of the 1990's.......2006-11-08

THE BAND: Ronnie James Dio (vocals), Tracy Grijalva (guitars), Jeff Pilson (bass, keyboards), Vinny Appice (drums & percussion).

THE DISC: (1994) 11 tracks clocking in at approximately 54 minutes. Included with the disc is a minimal 2-page foldout containing song titles/credits/times, one band picture, and thank you's. All songs written by Dio and Grijalva, with Pilson and Appice contributing on select tracks. Recorded at Rumbo Recorders, Los Angeles, CA. Label - Reprise Records.

THE DISC: Dio was a household name in the early to mid 80's. Two classic albums with Black Sabbath ("Heaven And Hell" and "Mob Rules"), a handful of solo releases - two of which are still considered all-time metal masterpieces ("Holy Diver" and "Last In Line"). In my opinion, nothing Dio has done, past or present can match the strength of any of the 4 albums mentioned above. The 1990's found Dio on the down-turn. He released only one studio album with Black Sabbath - "Dehumanizer" (1992) - which garnered mixed reviews at best. He released 3 solo studio albums... "Lock Up The Wolves" (1990), "Strange Highways" (1994) and "Angry Machines" (1996)... all again to mixed reviews ("Angry Machines" was actually trashed by several music magazines). With that being said, I believe that "Strange Highways" is the best of his 90's material. It won't stand up to his classic 80's albums, but it's still very good mainstream metal. "Strange Highways" contains some great tunes - a concert favorite "Jesus, Mary & The Holy Ghost", the heavy "Hollywood Black", the title track (which made it to Dio's "Anthology" and the "Beast Of Dio" compilations), and one of my all-time favorites of his, "Evilution". A very good disc that you can probably pick up used or on the bargain rack - and it's worth it. If you're a Dio fan, this album is essential to your collection (4 stars).

5 out of 5 stars Overlooked & Unappreciated.......2006-05-01

Like most people who will read this review, I have always collected everything by RJD from Sabbath forward. While all of my friends moved on to the "next big thing" in the nineties, I stood by RJD and all of my other favorite rockers from back in the day (AC/DC, Crue, Ozzy, Dokken, Quiet Riot, TS, Ratt, Y&T and many more). I was not a big fan of Lock Up The Wolves (Strange Highways predecessor) or Angry Machines which followed Strange Highways. However, Strange Highways is freaking amazing and it is sad that so many Dio fans dismiss anything from this period in Dio's career. It doesn't make sense because this cd is right in line with Dehumanizer by RJD and Sabbath and these two cd's are as good as anything he has ever done. I love Holy Diver and The Last In Line as much as the next Dio fan (maybe more) and I still listen to them frequently. But, RJD's career is so much more than those two solo albums and two Sabbath albums from '80 and '81. I admit that Angry Machines had me thinking that RJD was done because it's not impressive. But, don't lump Strange Highways in with Angry Machines. Furthermore, I don't get why people who didn't like Strange Highways always say things like "it is too experimental". That's BS. It's a very heavy, straight ahead hard rock Dio cd with some very fresh riffs. People try to make this thing out to be some kind of new age Dio. That's not what I hear when I listen to this cd. Luckily, in the past five years, RJD has had a real uptick in his popularity and Killing the Dragon and Master of the Moon have been praised by all. If Strange Highways were released today, Dio fans would be going nuts over it. If you want to tag something RJD has done as experimental, then take a look at Magica.

5 out of 5 stars This is great.......2006-02-12

This album is great. It's very hard, agressive and loud, and i like that. Dio sings different on this album too, he screams more. On other albums he sings a lot better, but the way Dio sings fits with the style of this album. This is not the Dio album to begin with if you don't know Dio. Then You must pick up Holy Diver or Dream Evil. This album is different from other Dio albums, but it is a very good one. You need to take the time to get used to this style. If you do that, then you will enjoy this album!

5 out of 5 stars The Spaces You Forgot to Listen In.......2005-03-29

If you were dreaming and driving at night with someone you love, this album is what you would hear on the wind.

We've got access finally to a lot of independent, new music. This is a time to explore and if you're up for it, anything by Lanterna (Henry Frayne is the key individual) is worth the time and the money. Highways is the latest incarnation of this talented musician's sonic mind. I listen to Highways in the early morning and sometimes driving by myself at night. This is definitely music to listen to by yourself. It is music for the soul--jangly guitar, acoustic rhythms, textured drums, poetic vibrations, and ambient sounds...even an intentional few minutes of silence in there on the title track for those of us who pay attention--and a payoff afterwards...kind of an untitled new composition.

Word is that Lanterna's coming out with a new album sometime in the summer so pay attention. Highways is a great jumping point for the uninitiated though. Elm Street is still my favorite, but I'm really looking forward to the next edition. Stay tuned.

4 out of 5 stars Henry Frayne gives us more luminescent guitarscapes.......2004-03-02

An hour with Henry Frayne, creator of music under the band name Lanterna, is a little like an hour of exploring the ocean depths or the vast reaches of space. He creates sonic pictures of the mind with his lingering, layered electric guitar chords and atmospheric melodies. The leadoff track, "Clear Blue," is just the latest fine example of Mr. Frayne's instrumental art. It shimmers with a kind of subliminal beauty, made by echoing sustained guitar tones that could be described as "ambient," but are best appreciated without concern for category. The CD is called Highways, and listening to its nine tracks is indeed something like a journey along the back roads, sometimes in contemplation and sometimes in sheer enjoyment. On this fourth Lanterna disc, the trend continues (begun on the Sands CD) of mixing in more of a rock feeling with some of the songs. This time it's on the Metheny-esque "Brooklyn" and especially on "Brightness," which features some David Gilmour-like choppy electric guitar chords.

As much of a huge Lanterna fan as I am, I'm a little sad to hear some signs of stagnation on Highways. A song such as "Canyons," a gentle acoustic-electric number that never really goes anywhere, makes me wonder if Henry has taken this particular "instrumental themes" thing about as far as it'll go. I hope not, because I'm still prepared to travel along with him for awhile longer.

Texan Lee Roy Parnell arrived on the scene in 1992 looking like a homogenized Delbert McClinton for the suburbs. Through the years, the country bluesman has evolved into a bankable, if too-safe hit-maker--mining the same, somnambulistic midtempo groove--while his slide guitar work, once as stinging as a scorpion, tends to settle for repetitive licks. Still, when he hits his stride, especially on the R&B-leaning ballads ("When A Woman Loves a Man," "Love Without Mercy"), he brings a welcome bit of blue-eyed soul to the polyurethane radio format. Parnell also proves himself with "If the House Is Rockin'," a roadhouse raver, and with "John the Revelator," the hippest blues-spiritual (with the Fairfield Four) that Lyle Lovett never made. This (mostly) greatest-hits package contains two new songs, including "Long Way to Fall," which explores the frightening exhilaration of love in yet another midtempo loper. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars where from?.......2006-10-21

I would like to know if anyone knows where the idea of the story behind the song on the road came from...also has anyone heard of legendary mike from new castle?

1 out of 5 stars Alot missing from this CD.......2006-04-12

Why, why do they bother with these greatest hit collections, if they aren't going to put ALL the hits on the record? No less than 4 of Lee Roy's best songs are missing from this compilation, specifically: "Power of Love"; "Givin' Water to a Drowning Man"; the collaboration with Brooks and Dunn, "Take These Chains from My Heart"; and my personal favorite, "You Can't Get There from Here".

This cd is a waste of money without those other songs, in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars What Kind Of Fool Do You Think I Am?.......2003-06-07

Lee Roy Parnell deserves much more credit than he gets. Since his debut in 1992, Parnell's country-blues slide guitar has made him one of my favorite artists. The roadhouse rocker's mix of R&B on songs like "When a Woman Loves a Man" creates a very different sound than you usually get from a country artist, while the wild "If the House Is Rockin'," shows his blues-rock side, and "John the Revelator" is a nice gospel number. My personal favorites, though, are "Heart's Desire," and "On the Road." Parnell's guitar work can get dull when he tries too hard to be a country hit maker, because he is his best when he leans towards the blues. Check out his newest release, "Tell the Truth," which is an excellent blues album. All in all, this is a nice greatest hits package of a talented and underrated musician.

5 out of 5 stars Where are you LeRoy??.......2002-03-09

I must admit, I'm not a huge country fan; I prefer blues and jazz, but this guy is GOOD. My brother turned me on to this CD a couple of years ago and I liked it immediately. What I want to know is, "where is this guy?" How come he's not more well known? He's got a great voice, excellent tunes and is good guitar player. What a shame - his management and/or record company needs to get on the ball. I like all the songs on this CD, but my favorites are Heart's Desire, On the Road, Long Way to Fall, What Kind of Fool Do you Think I Am, and of course, When a Woman Loves a Man with Tricia Yearwood. I also enjoyed reading the stories accompanying the song titles explaining how the songs came about.

On another note, for those of you who don't know, he has a brother, Rob Roy Parnell, who is also a musician who plays some pretty good blues. If you also like the blues, check out his CD, Jacksboro Highway.

Two number 1 hits came out of his 1981 album 'Waitin' For The Sun To Shine', and the awards started arriving. Ricky Skaggs is largely responsible for a back-to-basics movement in country music. Waitin' For The Sun To Shine was Ricky's first album to be released after signing to the Epic Record label and brought him into the mainstream. The album has a straightforward mountain approach with one of the best songs being the title track, recently covered by Lee Ann Womack on her There's More Where That Came From LP. On 1982's Highways & Heartaches, Skaggs developed his bluegrass roots with new traditionalist sensibilities and catchy pop tunes, making this album one of his best. Four of the tracks, 'Heartbroke', 'You've Got A Lover', 'I Wouldn't Change You If I Could' & 'Highway 40 Blues', were chart-toppers. The remainder of the decade found Skaggs often at the top of both the country single and album charts. Includes full sleeve notes by John Tobler. 19 total tracks. Gottdiscs. 2005.
