Overdue Pete Drake Compilation.......2003-06-23

Pete Drake was one of the most important people in Nashville in the 60's and 70's, as a player he played on 1000's of records behind Tammy Wynette, George Jones, Roy Drusky and countless others, he also was a producer and ran his own label "First Generation Records". This album gives an overview over his instrumenatl solo work from the 1960's, mostly for Starday, there is also one vocal track with the Willis Brothers. Great Music for Steel Guitar lovers ( a few tracks also have his famous "Talking Steel Guitar", a gimmick that only is of some historical interest, no musical worth behind it!)

Unfortunately the cover is very poor, no inside cover that gives some background information about the musician Pete Drake, something that happens alot on Starday and King reissues. But the music is still worth getting the CD!

Texas blues guitarist and vocalist Pete Mayes's debut album was a long time coming. Though his name didn't appear on an album cover until 1998, he was a figure on the Texas blues scene as early as the 1950s. The years of polishing his skills and playing with such blues greats as T-Bone Walker, Junior Parker, and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown show amply on For Pete's Sake, which hums through its 12 tracks like a well-oiled machine. Unlike a machine, though, this CD has heart, from the opening beats of the sassy "Pony Tail," through the smooth shuffle of "Mother-in-Law Blues," the sheer joy of "I Like Your Style," the wistfulness of "You're Still My Baby," and the playful exuberance of "House Party." Mayes's backing band is strong as well; mention must be made in particular of pianist Gene Taylor, whose work on "You Don't Understand" is nothing short of excellent. Peter Dawkins is one of Australasia's most respected and distinguished music veterans. He produced over twenty chart topping singles covering the seventies and eighties. Few local music producers have made their mark with so many time-less Australian hits. Peter was responsible for launching and the success of numerous music careers. He produced such well-known iconic Australian records as: "Wings of an Eagle" for Russell Morris; "Pegasus" for Ross Ryan; "Don't You Know It's Magic" for John Farnham; "April Sun in Cuba" for Dragon; "Computer Games" for Mi-Sex; "Short Note" for Matt Finish; and Australian Crawl's album "Sirocco". He produced over fifty gold and platinum records throughout his extraordinary career and received many prestigious production awards. During the seventies and eighties, while Peter served as A&R Director for CBS (Sony BMG), he signed Air Supply. As General Manager with EMI Records, he was instrumental in the signing of Crowded House. Both bands went on to huge international acclaim and stardom. For the past sixteen years Peter has been suffering from Parkinson's disease, the debilitating neurological condition for which there is currently no cure. It adversely affects all the muscles in the body. Peter is currently in the advanced stages of the disease and urgently requires an expensive operation, which is not publicly funded. Peter is a friend in need, who has played a huge part in the development of the Australian music industry and our listening pleasure. He is a man who has given a great deal to others over his lifetime while for the past sixteen years, he has been courageously fighting his own enormous battle. You people out there in the know, as well as the people not aught to treat yourselves to some real classy, premium quality, miraculously played and arranged music. Jazz like you wished you heard more often. Passionate, rich toned, warm, firey, dynamic as the day is long. On the recording, Mr Christlieb employs the people in the industry whom are the selfless, most qualified and gifted musicians on the planet. They contribute to a landmark recording that runs the full gamet from quartet interplay to truley amazing big band stuff. I bought this CD a year ago and I'm still raving about it. Pete Christlieb sounds magnificant. His tenor work as well as his bass clarinet support in certain places is so complete. I really hope that another CD could be made from extras done on these recording dates. For Heavens Sake is stellar. Conti Candolli, puts on a clinic for you trumpet enthusiasts. No more name dropping, it's a very worthy purchase.
