Outstanding Harmonies.......2005-10-21
It doesn't get much better than this. The harmonies are so tight; this group is so talented. The writing on this album is also great; the selections are very moving. Their other album, The Lights of Home is also great!

Zimmerman's Stamitz- impeccable and gorgeous!.......2002-09-10
I bought this album only being interested in the Stamitz viola concerto. I have heard several recordings of the Stamitz, and this one is by far completely on another much higher level. Zimmerman plays this concerto with such beautiful personality and style. I would not want to hear another version of this concerto- her interpretation exceeds probably what Stamitz himself heard in his own mind as he composed it. I use this recording as a model for my own interpretation, and insist that all of my students listen to this one. The orchestra sounds fantastic, and plays with admirable style as well. I particularily like Tabea's choice of the cadenza (from the Franz Beyer cadenza book), it completely fits the established performance practice style, unlike most of the published cadenzas out there. A phenomonal performance!
The milieu of the great masters.......2001-01-25
The music offerred here is the mirror image of great Classic masters. Unfortunately, many of them fell into obscurity due to fierce competition during that period. The music of Paisiello and Stamitz is not so unfamiliar to most of us. Mozart used Paisiello's piano concertos as model in his early music. The harp concerto recorded here is actually a transcription of the composer's piano concerto. The viola concerto by Stamitz is one of the gems in viola literature. The first movement contained a Manheim crescendo which Mozart copied in his concertante for viola and violin K 364. Garth's cello concerto is a throwback to the Baroque age with simple modulation and harmony. The second movement is soulful and extremely beautiful. Although the flute concerto by Gretry paled in comparison with rest of the music, it is by no means inferior. The EU Chamber Orchestra gives a flexible and firm support to the soloists, who are skillful and well accomplished artists. Owning this disk renders immense pleaure.
Lesser known but still good........2000-06-30
Despite the ambitious title "The Concerto in Europe" this cd features mostly little known works. That is not to say that it is anyway bad. It is a collection of Baroque concertos all in standard three movement form. However this cd has both a harp concerto and a viola concerto, both a rareity for any era of music. All the music is well preformed and if none of it is essential it all falls nicely upon the ear. The harp concerto is a wonderful peice that really shows what the instrument is capable of. The flute and cello concertos are nice (although they lack the virtuositic passages in many concertos) and are just great examples of baroque style. My personal favourite is the Stamitz viola concerto ( although I might be biased, I am a violist). The first movement showpoints the range and registers of the viola. The second movement shows off the tone, and the third movement is a tour de force in sting playing. Anyway, this cd, although filled with lesser known music, is a very nice listen from start to finish.

Amazon.com essential recording
Even before her tragic death at 41 (in 1953), Kathleen Ferrier became a legend for her incomparable voice, her simplicity and sincerity of expression, and her indomitable courage. This compilation of recordings originally made in the 1940s includes four arias from Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice recorded live in Holland, which show why Euridice was one of her signature roles. Two beautifully sung Handel arias, two sacred songs by Maurice Greene, and delightful duets by Purcell and Mendelssohn (sung in English with another beloved English singer, Isobel Baillie) are greatly enhanced by the inimitable pianist Gerald Moore. But the core of this recording is the Mahler cycle. Here, Ferrier's voice takes on a new warmth and intensity; her deeply inward, direct expressiveness gives the bereaved parent's grief and anguish a devastating impact. Her reading of the last song could be a bit more spooky, but the end is heartbreaking in its submissive resignation. The Vienna Philharmonic and Bruno Walter are in their native element. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
The incredible Kathleen Ferrier recordings!.......2003-05-20
Voice fans, rejoice -- EMI has finally remastered these recordings and released them as one CD at budget price!
While Mahler's "Kindertotenlieder" would be the chief reason for purchasing this CD right away, it also contains several morsels, equally fascinating. Purcell and Mendelsohn's duets, Handel's arias, Greene's spirituals, and 3 live arias from Gluck's "Orfeo ed Euridice". In general, particularly Mahler, the sound is nothing short of phenomenal. BUT why could not these engineers do the same for "Orfeo" selections? There's a lot of noise on these. On all the selection Ferrier's exceptionally dark mezzo (or contralto with a huge upper register) shines brilliantly. Of course, Mahler's songs bemoaning the death of children are not an easy listen by any means. But the melodies are amazingly harmonious and Bruno Walter's superb orchestra provides ideal background for them, with Ferrier's voice blending gorgeously with strings. Only Mussorgsky could take a subject such as this and make it so breathtakingly captivating. It's actually frightening in by itself. Gerald Moore (well-known for his collaboration with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau) accompanies expertly on Purcell and Mendelsohn's selections.
It would be a treat to hear Ferrier in more alto repertoire; I am just not sure how many were commercially available at the time. Right now, Vivica Genaux is the leading artist in this area, but it would be fascinating to compare these two.
For the sheer vocal marvel experience, do not delay in getting this CD.
A Terrible Beauty.......2002-11-14
Nothing will change my opinion that Mahler should be approached with caution. Like Wagner, the scale and power of his work means that it is simply not for everyone, but inspite of that, this recording is an indespensible part of any serious music lover's collection. Music like this simply is not made any more, but rather this is a glimpse into a past where artists and not accountants ran the music industry.
Mahler's wife Alma bitterly opposed his setting of Ruckert's Kindertotenlieder to music and considering the death of their daughter soon after, it's doubtful if she ever forgave him for it. But the finished work has an indescribable beauty that Kathleen Ferrier and Mahler's protégé Bruno Walter give full expression to in away that no other interpreter's have even approached. More than 50 years on this is both a lasting tribute to the artists involved and an indictment of the decline in standards since.
What is to say - It's Ferrier..........2002-03-31
I bought the CD for the Kindertotenlieder and that's what I am going to write about (though the rest of the program is equally impressive). Ferrier's Mahler interpretations are always in the 5+ star area. When Walter is accompanying her the results are even better (unlike the case of Klemperer). The first song - Nun Will Die Sonn'... the darkness of the music is so prominent, it's breathtaking. All the rest Kindertotenlieder come in the same fashion. If interested in a release with better sound but not these Olympian contritutors, Janet Baker and Christa Ludwig have made some very good discs
How can you go wrong?.......2001-10-22
I said it before, in my review of the Ferrier/Walter performance of Das Lied von der Erde, recently rereleased by Decca; Ferrier is the authoritative interpreter of Mahler songs--and I have never heard anything to equal this performance of Kindertotenlieder.

Indifferently Recorded and Unsuitably Cast........2000-10-22
Allegro Corporation have transferred this 1945 recording of Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas" to CD. The recording project originally occupied only one day, and it was sponsored by the British Council. Notable singers of the time on EMI's roster were engaged, the casting of Edith Coates as the Sorceress being especially successful. It was the second recording this opera had ever achieved. Even in its day, it received only qualified praise from critics. The chief complaints were that some of the singers were not always "in the style of the period" and that the sound quality was only mediocre. Well, these complaints still hold. Modern listeners might also quibble about the loudness of the harpsichord. The harpsichord had not long made it reappearance in 1945 in works of this period, and it was always deemed proper to amplify it like an electric guitar. Isobel Baillie's contributions command attention, as always, but she sounds a little flustered. Her high notes, and all the contributions from the chorus, have not been comfortably accommodated. All this has been provided for interested and prospective buyers because the accompanying notes give no information about the recording, apart from the cast list.
Pure magic!.......2000-03-24
Purcell's Dido and Aeneas is pure magic, graceful, thoughtful, emotionally dense, and intellectually challenging. This recording is true to a clean and clear baroque aesthetic. It is so moving that it is one of the few baroque operas that non-opera lovers could love. To attest to its direct communication of emotional and intellectual angst and pleasure, Mark Morris in the late 1990's choreographed a ballet to this music and travelled the U.S. and Europe with great success. Interestingly, this music was originally written for performance at a girl's school, and although the performances on this recording left me amazed at the transcendent sound of the human voice, the pieces (especially the one that Dido sings as she dies of a broken heart) are singable and lyrical. This recording is for bleeding hearts as well as the intellectually critical listener.

Album Description
The latest release from Baillie & The Boys is a songwriter's showcase and a vocal delight. This 12 song collection, exploring the fragility and power of love relationships, takes us down a pathway of emotion. Few lead singers can deliver this type of material better than Kathie Baillie, whose ditinctive voice inhabits these songs with conviction and warmth. Baillie or husband Michael Bonagura, who produced the album, co-wrote seven of the songs on the CD.
The album conveys a feeling of intimacy and is tastefully arranged with a clean acoustic approach that demonstrates the simple power of a great song. Baillie & the Boys' trademark harmonies, subtle acoustic guitar, piano and bass unite with Baillie's rich lead vocals to deliver these songs with elegance.
Some of Nashville's leading songwriters are featured here and the lyrics and melodies wrap around each other seamlessly. "The Road That Led Me To You" is the sixth album from Baillie & The Boys and demonstrates why the group has four CMA award nominations as well as numerous hit singles. The understated acoustic approach on the CD only adds to the intimacy in this beautiful collection of songs.
Customer Reviews:
Refreshing.......2000-10-08
When I first heard Baillie & the Boys in late 1987 I was immediately impressed by their polished sound and quality of their songs. Although at that time there were many class country acts, Baillie & The Boys stood out among them as being truly unique. A few years later the drought began with mostly unsubstantial singers and, to put it bluntly, songs that insulted the intelligence country music listeners. Unfortunately Baillie & the Boys became obscured by the masses of hype generated by musically ignorant "suits" whose only interest was to feather their own nests. Most people didn't know but Baillie & the Boys never stopped writing and making quality music. With the the release of "The Road That Led Me To You", fans and new listeners alike are treated to country music the way it should be; honest, intelligent without being vague and performed from the heart. This album tells of life, and is presented in a very intimate way. being produced by Michael Bonagura it is not clouded by someone who is on another wavelength, but by one who has been focussed on every song since it's beginning. Kathie Baillie's unique vocal style brings out the warmth in each song. Her ability to use her range and subtle Celtic lilt are a welcome return to expressive singing which has been hard to find in the last few years. The addition of the classic blend of Michael Bonagura's and Alan le Boef's vocals provide a very solid base and at the right times merge seamlessly to provide a wonderful chordal mix that is extremely rare. The acoustic nature of this album lends itself to an intimate session with the band, and at times evokes memories of Peter, Paul & Mary, of music which is heartfelt and has a message relevant to the times in which we live. This is indeed a timeless album. The message of the songs is pure country; life love, broken hearts, joyous times, all delivered by one of the best bands and songwriting teams that we can hope to experience in our lifetime.
Baillie And The Boys are better than ever.......2000-04-26
This is a group I've always loved. They soar, they sail and they take you right along with them. You will be singing every song with them before you've even listened through this album the first time. Kathie's heartbreakingly pure vocals are more angelic than they ever were, and there is this wonderful, heavenly thing that happens when "the boys" add their harmonies. This is a once in a lifetime sound from a one and only group, but as they have proven once again, they can make the magic happen time and time again. Do your heart a favor, and treat your self to this masterpiece of an album. You'll be glad you did. Juni Fisher, Nashville TN
My Ears Say "Thank You"!.......2000-03-29
I admit I have been a long-time fan, but for some reason, after the long hiatus from the last album, I almost forgot how good this group really is !This album is just superb, with Kathie's soaring, crying, caressing, and heart-healing lead vocals better than ever (Is there a more emotional and musically gifted singer in Nashville?--I dont think so.)Listen to "The Moment",an instant classic, and try not to get a chill. Listen to the harmonies from "the boys" on "Far Cry From Him" and tell me if any group, with the possible exception of The Eagles, can make them take flight into heaven like Baillie +the Boys can.And how 'bout the intimacy and sonic perfection of "Nobody Here To Love" ? As Billboard's reviewer said in the latest issue---"If there was any justice in the industry, this would be a platinum album". Pure and simple--if you love beautifully constructed songs, lush harmonies and an indescribably breathtaking female lead, you should check out this gem of an album!!!!
Sweeter than honey!.......2000-03-20
Just when you think that you've heard their best...here they come with one better! Even their old songs demand to be heard again. Kathies voice is stronger and sweeter than ever..when she sings "The Moment" she is really at her best! The harmony of Baillie and the Boys is outstanding!

Saw Baille and the Boys in Jackpot, Nevada and bought a pre-release copy of this CD in Sept '99. Every song on it is great. I listen to it nearly every day. My favorites are The Road That Led Me to You and Treat Me Like a Stranger. But I do like them all. You won't go wrong if you buy this cd.

Respighi's catalogue MUST be celebrated!.......2007-07-03
Respighi, best known for his compositions of Rome, "Roman Festivals", "The Pines of Rome" and "The Fountains of Rome" and somewhat lesser known for his "Ancient Dances and Airs" has composed many other wonderful works and this album is a perfect sampling of those other works.
"Three Botticelli Pictures" of which "The Birth of Venus" is most beautiful (perhaps one of the greatest compositions ever, in my humble opinion), "Adagio with Variations" (pure ear candy for lovers of the Adagio), and "Suite in G major" which is very much in the vein of Camille Saint-Saens (one of my other favorite composers) in its inclusion of and consumption by the organ, all are wonderful excursions in to this genius' lesser known works.
"The Ballad of the Gnomes" is a tone poem in the style of Respighi's Rome Trio, but it also has the dark and ominous feel of his lesser known "Metamorphoseon Modi XII".
This album would be a wonderful addition to any classical collection and is highly recommended to anyone that is just learning of this wonderful Italian composer or who has been limited to only his more famous works.
A highly recommended album for anyone who loves orchestrations in the grand style of the true greats such as Bach, Handl, Brahms or Mozart. Please, do yourself a favor and buy this CD.

I say this because the consummate master of orchestration, Ottorini Respighi, will not disappoint fans of his most popular works -- his Roman Triptych (Roman Festivals, Fountains of Rome, and Pines of Rome). My personal favorite is Fountains, and this brings me to the richly luminescent and awe-inspiring pieces contained in this recording. The world premiere recording of The Ballad of the Gnomes, was composed during the time of the triptych (1920s), and is very similar to those tone poems. However, the feel of this tone poem differs because its story-line is based on Carlo Clausetti's poem Ballata delle gnomidi; a myth-based story of an innocent male dying at the hands of some very amoral females (gnomes). Similar to the myth of the Sirens luring seamen to thier deaths. In this tone poem Respighi weaves a very sinister mood throughout a turbulent score that brings to mind the undulating waves of Debussy's La Mer. For this reason, this piece, and the third movement of his Three Botticelli Pictures, reminds me of Fountains of Rome. The Adagio with Variations for Cello and Orchestra (Alexander Baillie, cello) is an extraordinary piece. The piece in one movement is rather short but very evocative and mellow. The orchestration and Respighi's usual transparency of voice bring a lovely, fantasy quality; especially to the end of the piece. I was so inspired by the piece, that being a bassoon player myself, I transcribed the piece for bassoon and piano (after having found that Respighi had originally written it for cello and piano and was asked to expand it for orchestra by a cellist friend whom the piece is now dedicated). Mr. Baillie is a master of the nuances and intricacies of the piece and performs it exquisitely. The Three Botticelli Pictures is a rather well-known piece in three movements depicting three separate, yet equally famous paintings by the 15th-century master Sandro Botticelli. The first movement Spring is full of horn calls evocative of Roman Festivals or Beethoven's 6th Symphony. The light mood of the piece is portrayed through varying string tremolos and the dancing meters throuhgout the winds. The second movement is a depiction of The Adoration of the Magi. A very solemn, solo bassoon is heard throughout the piece, weaving his music into and out of harmony with oboes playing the familiar 'O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.' A brief rhythmic interlude of piano, celeste, and harp suggest the trek of the Magi en route to the Christ-child. As I mentioned before, the third movement bears a striking resemblance to The Fountains of Rome. However, here the Birth of Venus, is not as tumultuous as the middle movements of Fountains. The gentle strings give a tremulus birth to the goddess and in a very Respighian crescendo, the piece climaxes and the same undulating strings carry the beauty out to sea. The final piece on the album is The Suite in G Major for Strings and Organ. Very baroque and Bach-like, Respighi based this piece on the old-style concerto grosso. The Preludio is very straight forward in it's intent, but the flourish of Respighian orchestration makes one wonder what Bach may have composed if he lived with the large orchestras of today. The sweeping string scales and the grandeur of the organ's first entrance are a fitting segue into a beautifully somber Aria that is the second movement. The fugue-like quality of the third movement's Pastorale is rich with the luminescent string voicing that Respighi is known for. The striking first chord of the final movement's Cantico is similar to Saint-Saens' final movement of his 3rd Symphony. The interplay between string voicing and between strings and organ come to many an urgent front before the piece ends. The listener almost wishes Respighi had written this last movement to include a chorus. However the majesty of the entire composition is by no means diminished without one, due to Respighi's omnipresent skill in orchestration. I am sure that if you enjoy anything Respighi; from his large works like The Pines of Rome to his smaller orchestrations of Ancient Airs and Dances; there will be something to match every taste on this recording. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Baillie's CD Offers "Love" in Its Variegated Forms.......2007-03-11
Prime Cuts: Anchor Me, Never Knew Lonely, Come to Me
It has been almost 7 years since the last Baillie and the Boys CD. Such a long time in between albums, though frustrating for the ardent fan, is well worth the wait. Re-surfacing as a solo act, Kathie Baillie is not exactly divorced from "the boys," as Michael Bonagura's (also Baillie's significant half) fingerprints are everywhere: from co-penning a few tracks to contributing background vocals to producing the entire album. For aficionados of Bailie's sturdy contralto seasoned with some down home sylvan charm, then there's much to be enjoyed here. Vocally, Baillie has never sounded more intimately palpable and emotionally vigilant. However, "Love's Funny That Way's" diverts away from the sonically acoustic corduroy road paved by their last CD. Rather, this new effort cruises more along the polished modern country highway with some occasional detours into the byways of rustic traditional mores. The presence of songwriters such as Amy Grant and Tina Arena is enough to compass the album into a more burghal direction.
Following the footsteps of Wynonna and Jo Dee Messina, Baillie has been taken in by Australian pop-rock sensation Tina Arena's perceptive songwriting craft. The Tina Arena co-written title, though it suffers from a far busy backing, finds Baillie creating some awe-inspiring moments vis-a-vis her vocal stretches. More pensive is Baillie's cover of Vince Gill's smash "Never Knew Lonely." Eschewing Gill's bluegrassy lonesome feel, Baillie's version has a more Celtic touch with its pseudo- bagpipe sounds. While Amy Grant's "Send a Message," a heartfelt mid-tempo paean of abiding love, with its snarling electric guitar-bridge lands itself right n the ballpark of Adult Contemporary terrain. Similarly, "All Fall Down" is consummate pop with Baillie bristling with an engaging presence over this scathing sonic chronicle of the demise of a relationship.
To appeal to the graces of the country purist, "That Old Case," is the most traditional sounding track. Also found on writer's Paulette Carlson's latest CD, "That Old Case" tethers on the maudlin as the three ladies (Baillie, daughter Alyssa and Carlson herself) reminisce about the sentimental values of different pieces of furniture in their house. However, the album's best track is "Anchor Me," a no-strings-attached plea for devotional love. "Anchor Me" strikes the heart head on with its soul allaying melody and bone fide lyrics. Baillie's filigreed yet emotionally nuanced vocals in concert with Michael Bonagura and Jim Photoglo's gorgeous melody makes "Gone Away" an acoustic-leaning triumph.
Overall, Baillie does not let genres domesticate her. Rather, this new CD finds her on top of her material. Such versatility is her strength as she shows that she can sing with verve anything that comes her way. Further, she does not just sing about romantic love, in fact, love in its variegated forms is in spades here. The album closer, "Come to Me," for instance, is a stunning piano-led worship ballad. With an album that demonstrates such depth and width, one would wish Baillie would not let us wait another 7 years for her next effort.
