Great place to start and then some.......2007-06-09
I've had this CD for quite a while and moved on to the individual albums so thought it would be interesting to look at it again now that I've gotten further into Marty's fabulous array of records. This collection still holds up really well and is totally worth every dime. There are defintely holes in it but the good news is it's a case of getting a lot of satisfaction finding out what else he did. I can't think of a "country" singer with a more soulful voice let alone his other talents. Marty was the man. After getting this collection I'd go right into "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" to start to delve further.
Marty Robbins life time of songs.......2007-01-06
Great CD, all the favorites on one CD. There doesn't seem to be any more of the good old recording artist out there any more, only hip -hop country. I have always liked Marty Robbins, Chet Atkins and the likes of these type of singers.
Good place to start.......2005-11-30
I wanted to listen to Marty Robbins. Always liked the song Singing the blues and knew El Paso. This is a great start to Marty Robbins but diffently not the last cd i'll be purchasing from him.
Nothing Bad Here But Not All You Need.......2004-11-30
This is actually a lesser version of "The Essential Marty Robbins - 1951-1982" and while most of the songs are easy to listen to when served up by Marty, if you can get the above-named compilation, you will THEN have all you need (unless you require a lot of his Western album cuts, a treat in themselves). His early 50s songs were just typical blah old-time country for the most part but even with the traditional hillbilly orchestration, Marty made "I Couldn't Keep From Crying" special and an omen of what was to come. "That's All Right, Mama" (on both albums) is just a cover of Elvis Presley's regional hit before he went on to national success and is nothing special. As always, there's plenty to like here. It just could have been better.
a wonderful collection.......2004-03-20
Marty Robbins had so many hits through the years that even this impressive showing isn't complete. i don't know if this is a record-setting feat or not, but Marty had 37 consecutive Top-40 hits from 1953-1965...the single that broke the string was "Old Red" in 1965, it charted one week at #50. i love nearly all the songs on this album, the only one i didn't like as much is "Tomorrow You'll Be Gone". all of his big hits are on here and the only ones that were popular with his audience that they left off were: "Begging To You"; "Mr. Shorty"; "Cigarettes and Coffee Blues"; and "The Cowboy in the Continental Suit". incidentally, "Begging To You" was a 3 week #1 country hit and a #74 pop hit too so why it was left off i have no clue. Marty was one of country music's first pop cross-over acts. from 1956-1964 he constantly had singles on the country and pop singles charts. 11 of his pop cross-overs hit the Top-40, which in those days was unheard of for a country act to chart so high. All in all, this is a great look at Marty Robbins. one of my favorites is the last song, "Some Memories Just Won't Die". i love that arrangement and his performance shows that he still had it...even months before his death in December 1982 {that song was his last Top-10 in his lifetime; his final Top-10 came after his death, the early 1983 "Honkytonk Man"; not to be confused with the same titled hit by Johnny Horton and the remake later by Dwight Yoakam}.

Stop the World I Want to Get Off, Broadway cast.......2005-09-04
If you are a fan of Anthony Newley you will find this superb C.D. a welcome addition to your collection. It is easy to understand why this musical is considered Newley's finest. In addition to playing the lead role, he wrote, directed and composed many memorable pieces of music including "What Kind of Fool Am I", "Once I In a Lifetime", "Gonna Build a Mountain", and many, many more. His genious is well defined in this piece, it's a joy.
Dottie Conlon
a classic score of the 60's.......2005-04-27
STOP THE WORLD - I WANT TO GET OFF is one of the most fascinating musical theatre scores of the 1960s, the `new-style musical' was written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley and was largely tailored to Newley's vocal style.
Rarely has the score been bettered than on the original Broadway cast album, crisply reissued here on the Decca Broadway label. Anthony Newley and his pert leading lady, underrated British performer Anna Quayle, perform the score with flash and verve. The entire score is fantastic though the penultimate number "Someone Nice Like You" must count as one of the most beautiful love songs ever written for the musical stage.
Anna Quayle is a marvellous performer, sadly only really remembered for her role as the Baroness in the movie of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG (a role that is great but does not represent all she was capable of), and Anthony Newley, who also headed the London company to perhaps ever greater acclaim, is in his element.
A top cast album.
Great musical with great classic songs.......2003-07-13
This Bricusse-Newley musical is still fresh today. Some of the songs are classic. They include "What Kind of Fool am I" and "Once in a Lifetime". Newley's voice and vocal range was at its height when this album was recorded. If you like the music in this show then you will also like the music from "Roar of the Greasepaint, Smell of the Crowd".
NOT ALONE ANYMORE.......2002-10-03
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO LIKE HIM, SILLY ME . THIS WAS MY SECOND ALBUM I BOUGHT OF HIS ,IN A LONG LIST . NEWLEY'S STRONG VOICE AND PERSONALITY ARE THE VERY BEST.
YOU CAN ALMOST SEE THAT VERY EXPESSIVE FACE OF HIS, IT WA SA SHAME HIS PERFORMANCE WAS NOT CAPTURED ON FILM, STILL EVEN WITH OUT SEEING HIM. THE BLENDING OF SONG AND STORY ARE TIME LESS, THAT IT COULD BE ON BROADWAY TODAY WITHOUT BEING DATED.
THE STORY OF LITTLE CHAP AND EVIE , COULD BE ANY ONE OF US GOING THROUGH LIFE'S UP AND DOWNS.
Anthony Newley's Finest Hours!.......2002-09-25
To say that 'Stop the World' was a revolutionary musical in the days of sugar and spice, nicey-nicey musicals would be an understatement. To suggest that Anthony Newley was one of the finest singer-songwriter-performers of our time would be like saying the Pope is Catholic. To say that Decca has done us all a favour by finally reissuing this tuneful cast recording on CD would however be ACCURATE!
Anthony Newley died in April 1999 after losing his battle with cancer. The battle of fame he never lost and left behind a wonderful collection of musicals, songs, tv and cabaret performances that we can love again and again. But the finest of all of Newley's output was this musical. Co-wrote with Leslie Bricusse, Anthony Newley made the role of Littlechap totally his own. Not even Sammy Davis Jnr, Joel Gray or Tony Tanner in the film version could match that unique quality of style and originality that Newley exudes in this fantastic tour de force role.
For fans of musicals unfamiliar with Newley's work, you will not be sorry when you buy this CD. For Newley fans - why haven't you already bought your copy!!
Enjoy, one and all, Anthony Newley at his very best.

This has to be Mancini at his best.......2004-03-01
This CD contains contains Mancini's Beaver Valley Suite. In this Suite, he "writes" of his childhood in a steel town. Anyone who grew up in a mill town will immediately identify with the images created by the music. This has to be Mancini at his best. There are six more original pieces (tracks 6 through 11) that showcase Henry Mancini's unique ability of giving joy to others while doing something that he truly enjoys. I have all of these pieces on the LP, Debut. I have been looking for them on CD for years. I am listening to the CD as I write this review. As the sleeve says, it "presents a quality of sound superior to the original vinyl album."

Top of the line - incredible!.......2007-05-13
If I could give this 100 stars I would do it. Since my trip to Russia in 2006 I "discovered" Dmitri Hvorostovsky, and have since purchased much of his music on CDs and DVDs. All tracks on this particular CD are incredibly beautiful - beyond imagination. Mr. Hvorostovsky was rightfully chosen the "Best Singer of the World" when he was a young man. His lush, full baratone voice is, as the young generation says, "to die for". He has an impressive range, and one can tell he feels music deeply by the nuances in his singing. This CD is one of my favorites of his singing.
Long-awaited follow-up to "Dark Eyes".......2003-01-04
Ever since "Dark Eyes", one of the first albums of Dmitri Hvorostovsky, came out, I've been wishing for the baritone to record more Russian romances. Looks like Delos is more committed to preserving this magnificent voice on record more than Philips did. After all, "Dark Eyes" had a lot of orchestral music, though wonderfully performed by Ossipov orchestra, it effectively reduced the sang material by some about 15 minutes or so. This is certainly not the case here. Well oven an hour of excellent singing is recorded (close-miked) with no interruptions. The songs themselves are the ones most often performed as encored by Russian singers. While baritones or basses have the strongest claim to them, most likely stemming from a long Russian tradidion of low male voice solo, tenors and even mezzo-sopranos have performed some of those to great acclaim.
The absolute hardest thing about performing these songs is not to make them sound sappy, vulgar, or over-done. Of all Russian singers who dealt with this material, I most often think of bass Boris Shtokolov, who sang them with utmost care. Dmitri does just that here. His care for the texts is what strikes me first while listening to "I Met You", a reflective serenade to love long lost. While all songs are spectacularly presented, I would like to mention "Misty Morning" and "I loved you". Like the title song, they are both filled with gentle melancholy, and sang with great tenderness and feeling. Some high-energy items, such as "Troika" seem just a little out of place, but the voice is a sheer pleasure to listen to. In "Oh, Could I in Song Tell My Sorrow", there's a strange change from traditional "your heart would break" to "my heart would break". I am not sure as to why this was done, particularly since the Cyrillic texts are absent.
In liner notes, Hvorostovsky explains the dedication of this album to his father, a chemical engineer, who managed to convey his love for the classical music and Russian romances to his son. I think all fathers need to learn from this man. Wondrous results stem from right upbringing!
The only minor quibble I have is the cover picture. It seems like the producers wanted to target exclusively the female part of the audience by using lots of shades of red color and lots of subdued candlelight. Well, I am sure there are lots of Dmitri's fans among men, particularly those of us who study voice, so I wish Delos would not make the cover so extravagant.
The engineering of this album, though, is very appropriate. The voice is placed well above orchestra (conducted with perfection by Constantine Orbelian) and each word is clearly heard. Together with Verdi Arias recording this shows that Delos engineers are fully capable of capturing the voice of this size and beauty well on record, something I doubted when listening to an otherwise lovely album of Neapolitan Songs.
I am sure non-Russian speakers will enjoy this CD just as much as Russians. After all, we all feel the same, and Dmitri's exceptional talent just makes it easier to communicate across cultural barriers.
ANOTHER WONDERFUL ALBUM FROM DMITRI.......2002-10-11
Once again, Dmitri Hvorostovsky has done another beautiful album. I'm completely thrilled with his last three releases on the Delos lable--the Verdi Album, the Passione di Napoli album and this new Russian love song album. As I have previously indicated on my review of his Passione di Napoli album, I've been a fan of his since his very beginnings in opera, and I do feel that he is truly in his vocal prime.
This album is for the "romantic at heart". The songs are beautiful as is the singing. All I can say of this endeavor is Bravo!!
I'm truly grateful that Hvorostovky's recording career was extended by the Delos lable!!
Dmitri at his best.......2002-10-09
What a treat this CD is. I've been waiting years for the great Hvorostovsky to record another album of Russian folk music, and this is arguably his best collection of that genre to date. Recorded in August, 2001, Hvorostovsky has never sounded better, and the sound quality admirably complements his rich, velvety baritone. Unlike his earlier collection of Neapolitan songs for the same label (DELOS), the recording balance between singer and orchestra will please everyone this time. Furthermore, the CD benefits from stylishly idiomatic arrangements, some fine conducting from Constantine Orbelian, and the sympathetic support of both the Moscow Chamber Orchestra and the Russian folk music performers, the Style of Five.
The 19 songs on the CD are described as "Old Russian Romances", or in professional music terminology as "Russian Domestic (Household) Romances". These are passionate songs of love, "often against the background of vast, empty Russian landscapes with long roads under foggy, gray skies", as the liner notes tell us. Hvorostovsky's dark, expressive baritone is ideally suited to such music, and Dmitri aficionados will no doubt recognise two songs from his earlier CDs of this genre, the haunting title track and the wistful "O, If Only I Could Express In Sounds". The latter was featured on his best-selling 1991 "Russian Romances" CD for Philips, but here - if anything - his singing is even more poetic than in earlier days. Comparing the two versions, one is immediately aware of how much freer Hvorostovsky's top notes are on the latest CD, with his upper register showing none of the slightly constricted quality that occasionally marred the earlier CD. This is the voice of a mature artist, and it is rare indeed to hear such committed singing from the soul.
As if the above wasn't enough, the CD comes with translations, generous liner notes, and an alluring cover photo of the handsome Siberian.
Hvorostovsky in his Milieu.......2002-08-31
This is Hvorostovsky at his finest. His magnificent rich creamy baritone is not taxed. He makes you sigh at beauty of his high
mezzo-voce notes, held endlessly, and trailing off to nothingness. The songs themselves are lovely-sad ballads of lost love for the most part, with a few catchy little ditties thrown in for a change of pace.
As crossover discs go, this one is one of the best. A fabulous singer at his prime, singing the songs of his childhood memories.
Bravo Hvorostovsky!

Customer Reviews:
Really terrific.......2003-12-14
Clearly I'm in the minority here, but I really like this recording. Mike Holoway and Louise Gold don't equal the brilliant and authoritative performances of Newley and Quayle, but they do very, very well.
I'm puzzled by the hostility that the performances of Holoway and Gold have provoked from most of the other reviewers. And I would think that some of the Newley lovers would be pleased that that the people at JAY think highly enough of this score to have produced a complete recording of it, even if they didn't love the result. Instead, they seem affronted by the idea that anyone would dare produce a recording with someone other than Newley as Littlechap.
Holoway has a more pleasing voice than Newley, and his acting of the songs satisfied me completely. Obviously, Newley had an authority in these songs that no one else will ever have. But Holoway is excellent.
And I think that Gold is often as funny as Quayle. There are definitely places where Quayle is absolutely matchless, brilliant and beyond comparison. But Gold is very good.
This recording is well-conducted, the orchestra plays terrifically, the orchestrations sound fabulous, and the supporting cast is fine. And it contains the entire score.
I've heard almost all of the releases in the JAY Masterworks series, and I think this is one of the best. Some of the other reviewers seemed to have been upset that neither of the recordings featuring Newley and Quayle were available while this one was. Well, it seems strange to blame this recording for that. The people at JAY weren't keeping the other ones from being released.
In any case, the Broadway recording with Newley and Quayle is again available. I'm glad to have both.
Lacks magic.......2000-02-12
Newley was the magic. At the Broadway performance we saw in '63 and in the Album with Anna Quayle there was fresh energy and not a false moment. It's not entirely fair to compare but in comparison, this is stale and leaden...like the movie made of Stop The World (without Newley).
What else we might have written was already said exactly as we would have said it by Jeff Dunn in his review.
We gave three stars because it is still Newley and Bricusse and so it is still marvelous invention and worth a '...quick butcher's hook....'

Not the Original Broadway Cast (as suggested by headline).......2000-01-29
Sorry to say that this release does not measure up to the 10/12/1988 Polydor 820 261 distributed by UNI and now out of print. I must heartily agree with Mr. Dunn (above). Bring back the Original Broadway cast!
BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST ALBUM.......2000-01-13
To start off with, I am an avid Anthony Newly fan and was really sadden by his death. I did get to see the original Broadway show. Unfortunatly, this new version does not match the original. Newlys way of putting over a song is missed. The songs seem to be sung much slower so the performers can sing the songs. It was Newlys show and when you listen to the original cast album, you can tell the difference. Lets hope they will reissue the origianl cast album again. It is an important Broadway musical and should be back on cd for the people who did not get a chance to get it when it was available. I'm glad I was one of the lucky ones. Did we really need another recording of Stop The World? I don't think so.

In Memory Of A Great Soprano: A Tribute Album.......2005-02-01
Victoria De Los Angeles has died but not her legacy. She left behind numerous recordings and film footage that showcase her superb operatic voice. This album, along with "The Very Best Of" are perfect tributes to her artistry. She was a warm, vibrant and sweet sonbird of opera. Never a diva with an unpleasant or arrogant attitude (like ahem M. Callas or K. Battle most recently) she once accompanied herself with a guitar at a recital. Trained as a Spanish Zarzuela and ballad singer, she became a great figure in the Lieder and Art Song scene. She championed the works of many obscure but brilliant song composers. This album more than others provides us with a look at these awesome composers who are unfortunately very little known today. Victoria De Los Angeles, despite her big physical presence, possessed a light, lyric voice. She was mostly a full lyric soprano with some spinto. Her greatest role is said to be Puccini's Mimi in La Boheme. She excelled in the role of Violetta of Verdi's Traviata purely for the voice of the character. She must have made a sensational Magda in Puccini's Rondine, as well as a dazzling Marguerite in Gounod's Faust. She was also in a very celebrated performance of Tales Of Hoffman opposite Nicolai Gedda. I believe De Los Angeles either sang Olympia or Antonia. Her Antonia was particularily impressive. She had such an unassuming and winning personality. The ability to touch an audience, relate to them or communicate to them is a very rare and special gift few sopranos have. Some sopranos, goddesses of opera, have remained mysterious, distant and aloof and even cold to the audience. It was definately like that in olden days of opera- 17th-19th century. Maria Callas, despite her strong following, was always a figure of distant mystery and myth. Kathleen Battle was a temperamental diva who didn't get along with her cast and co-workers and Birgit Nilsson is said to have been a bit frigid herself. But Victoria De Los Angeles won her audiences by touching them directly somehow. She was like Beverly Sills in this manner. She was also like Teresa Berganza in this way as well. Spain has produced a number of outstanding figures in opera- tenor Placido Domingo, baritone Justino Diaz, tenor Jose Carreras, Jose Cura, the forementioned mezzo soprano Teresa Berganza and even Montserrat Caballe, though she was Catalan and not exactly Spanish but still...Spanish in a way.
I was never able to see her on stage. She was before my time but I have become familiar with her voice and performances through albums. I hope her death will get folks to buy her albums and hear for themselves one of opera's most enchanting voices.
In Memoriam.......2005-01-16
One of the most brilliant, exquisite and beautiful voices of the 20th century extinguished today. Victoria de Los Angeles died at 83 in Barcelona. I'm writing this with grief and tears in my eyes for I loved her voice, her personality and her beautiful personna.
The title of this disc is very apt to describe her: "A lifetime achievement", "the fabulous Victoria de los Angeles". She had, first and foremost, a unique, instantly recognizable vocal timbre, a quality of tone and production that marked her off from all others. Her sense of pitch and rhythm, of phrasing and tempo was unerring. The repertoire at her command included noy only an astonishing variety of operatic parts (the staccato gaiety of Rosina, the fragility of Melisande, the frank volupte of Carmen), but also realms of music unknown. She ranged from the chaste purity of medieval canticles to the melismatic wailings of Andalusian Flamenco, from the florid baroque roulades of Handel and Carissimi to the introspective Lieder pf Hugo Wolf and Robert Schumann. Schubert's An die Musik and Valverde's Clavelitos inhabited the same program and received equal devotion from this unsnobbish interpreter.
Good bye Victoria and thank you!
de los Angeles sings ... and unpacks her guitar........2002-02-01
"Well, I have certainly brought my guitar with me," was the answer Victoria de los Angeles gave to reporters, on arriving in Australia in the 1950s, when asked if she would provide her own accompaniments during her forthcoming tour.
Add this CD to your cart, and you too will be able to hear her accompany herself on her guitar in a little "farewell to Granada". The bulk of the items derive from a recording session done in Barcelona in 1960 with pianist Gerald Moore. It recreates the experience that formerly could be enjoyed when a singer and piano accompanist gave a recital. There might be a few "arie antiche", a bracket of lieder, some French art songs, and then a selection of items from the singer's special repertoire. In Victoria de los Angeles' case, this meant a number of Spanish songs, usually including the ubiquitous "Clavelitos". Well, that is what can be heard here, for about 50 minutes, including brief spoken introductions to the Spanish songs.
To bring the total playing time up to 65 minutes, Testament have included the singer's performance of the aria from a Bachianas Brazileiras recorded under the composer's direction, one of the "Chants d'Auvergne", and an extract from her complete "Carmen" conducted by Beecham.
Testament have ensured that many of Victoria de los Angeles' recordings are obtainable in excellent reissues. This one, subtitled "A Lifetime Achievement" provides complete texts, some colour photographs, program notes, and biographical information about a singer who will be eighty years old in 2003.

Customer Reviews:
True Sweethearts.......2000-10-16
This CD offers some of Jeanette Macdonald and Nelson Eddy's most beloved songs from their movies. Their natural chemistry is apparent in songs like "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life" and their individual talents are shown in the solos that they sing. These two legendary performers draw the audience into their songs and each is a special memory of the movie that it came from. Macdonald and Eddy were made to sing together. It is surprising that they were not sweethearts off screen after hearing their voices and seeing their movies. Their passion and tenderness towards each other is something out of a fairy tale. This CD has all the fun, romance, and innocence that was epitomized in their movies. It is a true treasure and a favorite in my music library.
