Amazon.com essential recording

Way back in 1980, the original wave of Talking Heads fans were pleasantly stunned to hear Remain in Light, produced and co-written by Brian Eno, on which Byrne and company are joined by guitar god Adrian Belew, and funk legends Bernie Worrell (keyboards) and Steven Scales (percussion), among others, for a fuller, funkier sound nobody imagined they had in them. The first three songs are long, layered, full-body dance parties, with incessantly repeated phrases (musical and lyrical), and increasingly catchy melodic hooks that won't let go for days. "Once in a Lifetime" was the big hit, but the rockingest track is the third, "The Great Curve," after which the songs get more linear and subdued. It's still great stuff, right through to the especially Eno-like droner, "The Overload," but the second half is maybe better to sleep to than dance to. Which is fine: after the exuberance of the first three songs, you'll need a little nap. --Dan Leone

4 out of 5 stars still good but earlier albums better.......2007-05-13

i am a huge talking heads fan,but this album ranks no 4 on my list. their previous 3 albums are a bit more funkier and catchy. though i have to admit the great curve (off remain in light) is one of my favourites. buy all 4 you wont be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Afro/ Techno/ Magnifico!.......2007-01-28

'Remain in Light' is arguably the Talking Heads' best album ever. Steeped in primitive, African rhthyms, but sent with the trajectory of advanced technology, the album harnesses a mesmerizing and formidable set of sounds and images. It is easily Talking Heads' most avant garde work of their whole career. Think of tribal music generated from a computer, and you get 'Remain in Light'.

What used to be known as side one has mainly more progressive songs, and the second half is more subdued, but all of it is brilliant. There's "Born Under Punches," where David Byrne warbles, "I'm a tumbler...I'm a government man." Like many songs before it, he takes the everyman through the cross-hairs of everyday, struggling existence. "Cross-eyed and Painless" is pedestrian, but contains some riveting funk, and "The Great Curve" is hypnotic with the most dancey song from the album. "Houses in Motion" takes the funk where "Cross-eyed.." left off, but, understandably, given the title, takes a slower groove. (I've often wondered if the song is about the homeless.) Anyway, nuances give way to thoughtful songs like "Seen and Not Seen" and "Listening Wind". The finale is truly magnificent. Perhaps a song about calamity as big as Armageddon, "The Overload" is a chilling song that envelops the listener with its ominous development.

Still, a classic after all these years, 'Remain in Light' sounds just as innovative and modern as it did upon its release. Having a troubadour song, "Once in a Lifetime," complete with synthesizers that simulate flowing water, has kept them on the radio for a number of years with the most moving, and yet, "normal" song from the whole album.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Byrne, Batman!.......2007-01-27

Every band has an album so good, it overshadows everything else they did, even making their better albums seem like mere trifles by comparison. For the Talking Heads, it was Remain in Light. Eight tracks of sheer brilliance: funky, paranoid, and avant-garde thanks to Brian Eno's genius production job. Loaded with unforgettable classics, namely the first four songs: Once in a Lifetime is not only the group's signature song, but arguably the greatest tune of the entire New Wave movement, maybe even the late-'70's in general; Crosseyed and Painless fuses dance with rock and avant-garde music in a way that NOBODY had EVER attempted before; The Great Curve is seductive and sensual, a rare thing for the group, with a cool distorted guitar solo; Born Under Punches has some of the best paranoid lyrics one's likely to hear, period, with an unforgettable feel to boot. This could've been a science-fiction short story, as could've the droning closer Overload, which is also first-rate. Seen and Unseen, Listening Wind, and Houses in Motion are all slightly weaker than those five, but they're all pretty good: there's not a bad song here. I'd say this is even better than Fear of Music, which is quite an achievement. If the Heads do anything for you, you owe it to yourself to buy this.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-09-22

I first heard this record either my sophomore or junior year in college. It was late one night and I'm sitting at my computer reading music reviews and I always heard these great things about the album "Remain In Light" as well as the Talking Heads. Rolling Stone (a magazine I cannot stand primarily for the rankings they always do) ranked this record the third greatest album of the 80's. (After #1 "London Calling" and #2 "Purple Rain"). I'm a lover of old-school music so I had to hear this record....I had to hear the Talking Heads. Luckily, my roomate had this CD and I listened to it at about 2 in the morning.

The record opens with "Born Under Punches" (The Heat Goes On). I did not get it at first. I'll go so far as to say I did not even like this record. All I liked was "Crosseyed and Painless". The music was too weird for my liking.

The next day I decided to give it another chance. And man, am I glad I did. This record is flat out ridiculous!! You want funky music?? The entire first side is filled with killer grooves. Tracks 1-4 are danceable and will either make you move or do something. You cannot stand still while listening to this record. This is possibly the first record by a prominent band exploring African polyrhythms....all that really means is that each member of the band is doing their own thing within the song. The additons of Adrian Belew (guitar), Steve Scales (percussion) and Funk Legend Bernie Worrel (Parliment/Funkadelic) on keyboard give the band a complete sound not heard before. The second side starting with "Houses in Motion" slows the record down but the funk does not go away. Concluding with "The Overload" which has producer Brian Eno's influence all over it. (Eno was also on "Buildings and Food" and "Fear of Music" (The track is a very "Low", "Heroes" era David Bowie track, albums which Eno also produced).

The funk that started on "Fear of Music" is magnified ten-fold on this record. My two favorite songs are "Crosseyed and Painless" and "Once In A Lifetime". Starting with "Lifetime", this was the single from this record and it had a video as well. This is considered by many to be the band's greatest song. Watery keyboards along with the Weymouth/Frantz tandem and David being David with the lyrics makes this songs special. But to me, "Crosseyed and Painless" is the jewel of this record.

When I first heard this song back in college I immediately thought it was amazing. This is pure funk. I listened to it about 20 times that night. (No exaggeration) Tina Weymouth'a bass destroys this track and with everything going on at once it is almost impossible to name all the instruments on this one track. (Or any track for that matter) Weymouth has to be one of the best bassists. She never plays anything too complicated but she never messes up, never drops the rhythm. The bass fits in perfectly on these tracks. Frantz does not drop his 4/4 pattern and the track just has so much life. More than any other record, Byrne's lyrics really do not matter nor what the songs are about. This record is all about the music....the polyrhythms. The Talking Heads were so inventive and their music crossed all racial boundries. Songs from the record were played on Black and White radio stations. The influence of this record was felt throughout the entire decade in Rock, Funk and R&B music by groups wanting to branch out in their music.

As great as the music is it is kind of strange to me that it has not been sampled more often. This album has "SAMPLE ME" written all over it!! Those who think this music is monotonous are not seeing the big picutre. I think it is harder to play the same part over and over because one slip and the whole track is wasted. The Talking Heads were all about precision and given time this records seeps in the your mind and body and it cannot be escaped. This is a must listen. If you are interested in the band this is the place to start. No one else was doing music like this back then and that is why it is considered a landmark. Talking Heads- One of my all-time favorite bands.

4 out of 5 stars The best Heads CD ever........2006-07-08

Adrian Belew makes this an incredible Cd. Great sounds come from his fingers and leaves you wondering how in the world did he make his guitar make that sound? Listening Winds is a great tune with terrorist's point of view. I am not all hot on terrorists but it's a good song. And of course the song about the water going under is the bomb from way back. This CD still holds the same place in my heart as it did 20 years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Disciple ROCKS!.......2007-07-16

Before this CD, I didn't particularly care for Disciple. But after seeing them in concert the week it came out, I decided to try it and fell in love with their music. This CD has a song for everyone. If you're more into the inspirational or slower stuff, I'd suggest "After the World" and "No End at All." For those of you who like the heavier stuff that Disciple is known for, I'd suggest "Scars Remain," "Game On," "My Hell," and "Fight for Love." It's a great CD, a great band, and a great message that they're putting out there. After listening to this, I went from not even knowing the names of the band members, to knowing every single lyric to every song on this CD.

2 out of 5 stars Not what it should be.......2007-04-10

Disciple is a band that, unfortunately, seems unable to find its way to the top of any audience's favorites list. Too unpolished to reach the top of the Christian rock scene and too typical to gain success in more indie-oriented circles, Disciple is perpetually cursed to mediocrity.

Admittedly, this album is a step in the right direction, seeming an improved successor both to the recent, pop-oriented self-titled album and the older, rawer releases like By God and Back Again. The beats are fast and the guitar riffs faster in songs like "Dive", "Regime Change", and "Game On". Unfortunately, the songs never seem to go much farther than that, opting for paths beaten to dust ten years ago or more rather than newer sounds.

The lyrics have enough biblical allusions to satisfy the religious audience, and the riffs have the tired feel that make this exactly the type of release that "old-school" Christian rockers will love, complete with the sleep-inducing power ballad "No End at All". However, in a scene that is increasingly developing lyrical and musical depth, Scars Remain simply can't compete--it has nothing really new to offer.

5 out of 5 stars My Metallica replacement.......2007-04-02

I've been a Metallica fan since 1989. I recently gave up listening to them because of their interference with my faith. Only 5 days after I discarded every Metallica CD I had, I received this Disciple CD in the mail. Like I said, I was a fan, die hard Metallica fan, since 1989. Scars Remain has replaced my Metallica thirst musically and replaced angry, hopeless lyrics with Jesus. Awesome!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-28

When my dad showed me this CD I was blown away. I couldn't believe that i'v never heard of Disciple before. Ever since christmas they are all I have in my stereo and on my MP3 player. I can't get enough of Disciple and I can't wait for their next CD.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome band, Awesome CD! .......2007-03-27

I am a Christian, and of course I listen to Christian music, and I LOVE all types of Christian music, Contemporary, Hip Hopish, Rock, etc... I read a review on this CD on Amazon, and that same day I went to town and I bought the CD and I am really glad I did! Disciple is an awesome Christian rock band! I am really liking this CD more each day as I listen to it. I am glad that Disciple is doing this for God. I hope that they continue to do what their doing in Music Ministry. My favorite songs would have to be "After the world", "My Hell", and "No end at all". All in all this is an awesome Christian CD, and I recommend that you all go buy it! ;-)

4 out of 5 stars Grows on you.......2007-03-01

I've been a huge In Flames fan for quite a while now, and I got this album a while back. Jester Race and Whoracle are their undisputed masterpieces (Colony and Clayman are up there, too), and when I first listened to this album I was disappointed. It seemed greatly lacking in just about every category possible in comparison to their earlier albums. Although I still prefer their earlier albums, I have come to really like this album. Unfortunately this is their last good album in my opinion. Reroute to Remain marks a change in their sound (it continues on their "newer" sound presented on Colony and Clayman, and adds some electronic samples in their music, as did Dark Tranquillity), which isn't necessarily a bad thing (it took me a while to get used to, but now I enjoy it almost as much as their older stuff). My only advice is avoid their last two albums, unless you find yourself liking their newer sound than their older sound. Overall, RTR is a very good album that evolves In Flames' sound. If you're new to In Flames, I suggest starting with Jester Race or Whoracle first, though.

1 out of 5 stars BOOOOO!!!!!!!.......2007-02-17

This album is garbage. I love in flames and i can't find anything nice to say about this album except that when thrown from a moving car it flies really nice and shatters into a million pieces!

5 out of 5 stars Metallic excellence........2006-12-22

This is the first album I bought by In Flames, and after going back and buying every album that went before (and since), I have to say this is my favorite. Actually, this is one of my all time favorite albums period. I like pretty much like everything they have ever done, but this one really stands out for me. I don't understand the negativity surrounding this album by long time "fans", I really can't see where they are coming from. This album is truly a masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Good, Different, Experimental.......2006-12-04

This was when In Flames got accusations of selling out (Its an up in the air debate with me) however this album is still good and enjoyable. Listen to it for yourself before making a decision on it. Its deff more experimental than their other work and most certainly not as good however RRTR is still good music and I deff enjoyed it. Some of the tracks are weak and others very strong. Their newer work doesnt have the Flow of Jester Race or Whoracle and neither does it have their mood, it doesnt have the intensity and consistancy of Colony and Clayman however it is In Flames and still good music just different. More poppy and more of a clean and processed production. Its deff more atmospheric and more vocal focused then their earlier work but still good just not great.

4 out of 5 stars it rocks..........2006-11-15

thats how i can sum it up. it may not sound like whoracle but i still love this record. some of my fav. songs are on here. they got alot of crap for this one(and the next one) but i loved it. they tried something new. not st. anger new(thank god!) but its a new sound none the less. and it works.

Album Description

With Our Shadows Will Remain, Arthur has delivered the album that will connect with the masses. It is at once his most intricate and focused work to date, featuring the mesmerizing rock tracks "Can't Exist" and "Even Tho". With other songs ranging from beautiful acoustic melodies (Echo Park) to harder-edged, expansive driving rock (Devil's Broom), to deep and gritty programmed beats (I Am, Wasted), this album is a real, vital diary of the landscape of urban life and the album that most clearly reveals the breadth of Arthur's incredible talents. Our Shadows Will Remain is an instant classic, destined to make Joseph Arthur a household name.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You Can Not Go Wrong with this Album.......2007-07-02

"Our Shadows Will Remain" is up to the same excellent standards Joseph Arthur has set with "Come to Where I'm From"(my favorite) and Redemption's Son".

You can't go wrong with any of these three and if you like Joseph Arthur -you should go ahead and get them all. "Nuclear Daydream" and "Big City ..." are fine for a fan (which I am), but start with one of the three I suggest here if you are just being introduced to him.

3 out of 5 stars I will wait for you Joseph.......2007-04-25

I suspect I'd enjoy this album better if I hadn't seen Joseph perform most of these songs live in a much more stripped down haunting manner. "Can't Exist" is the most obvious casualty of the overproduction here, making it for me at least almost unlistenable. There is just something a bit too slick about how this album was produced as if someone was afraid of how stark the material is so they decided to sweeten it. "I Am" is another one that worked quite beautifully live and seems almost hokey on the album, which is a shame as it is almost Beckettian in its clarity. Still some great songs but too much gloss.

4 out of 5 stars Shadows and Light.......2007-02-15

Let's get the clunkers out of the way first: "I Am" sounds like the more pretentious bits of Pearl Jam via Daniel Lanois, while "Leave Us Alone" sounds like Meat Loaf. Given that Arthur usually writes with a pretty sure hand, both songs sound like jarring missteps.

On the other hand, Joseph Arthur's never been one to play it safe, so he can/should be forgiven if his reach occasionally exceeds his grasp. I've seen a couple of reviewers--here and elsewhere--complain that this album's a stylistic hodgepodge, but I rather liked the variation, which tends to be absent on, say, the more recent "Nuclear Daydream." It should also be said that it's not variation for variation's sake; from the ethereal "Echo Park" to the more earthy "Can't Exist" or "Devil's Broom," the changes are appropriate to the music. They're there to drive home the lyrics, rather than being there for their own sake. In contrast to someone like Josh Rouse (whose songwriting I love, but whose arrangements tend to fall into a middle-of-the-road sameness), Arthur's not afraid to stretch out.

What all of this translates to, when all's said and done, is someone whose work bears up to repeated listening... even if the number of those listening is probably much smaller than it ought to be. Joseph Arthur is one of a small number of artists whose work I'll buy with no questions asked, because the end result--whatever else it may be--is always compelling.

5 out of 5 stars Album of the year?.......2006-06-14

Amazing songs, well constructed, different, mixed instrumentation, great use of drums and guitar and voice. Ranks with Hose Gonzalez as Album of 2006. Enjoy.

This recording from the Irish-American group Solas really makes the two national identities mix beautifully. They start with Woody Guthrie's "Pastures of Plenty," played as a roaring Irish ceili. Later they delve into politics, delivering a strong message over a strangely effective, upbeat musical bed in Peggy Seeger's "Song of Choice." It doesn't hurt that they invited Iris DeMent to share the vocal duties on this track, and she and Solas front singer Karen Casey give this song emotional impact. Guest input also includes banjoist Bela Fleck, some interesting bass work from Chico Huff, and a mixed bag of percussion and drums from John Anthony. But the core group is still deeply involved in the material that they have made a name with. The Irish dance sets still dominate the recording. John Doyle's guitar continues to provide a solid rhythmic bass that usually precludes the need for a drummer (even when they have one); Seamus Egan provides a broad palette of sounds on banjo, flutes, mandolin and percussion; Winifred Horan continues her notable fiddling; and Mick McAuley continues to expand his mastery of the squeezeboxes. Record number three for Solas still finds them on track, with a solid, all-acoustic lineup, a great choice of tunes, and a subtle new bi-directional course toward America and then back to Dublin. --Louis Gibson

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Karan carries it........2005-10-31

Karan Casey's voice is the main reason for buying this album. What else is there? Well, there are sets of jigs and reels that are as jiggy and reelly as you could wish for, if you like that kind of thing. Also, Iris DeMent joins Casey on "Song of Choice" and it is great to hear these two fine and distinctive voices together, even though the song itself is unremarkable. It would be wonderful to hear more of them as a duo.

The weak points are the two songs in Gaelic -- which gain nothing by being sung in the original (unless of course you speak the language) -- and the dreadful La Bruxa, a painful squeezebox effort that might earn a busker a few centimes (or Euros) outside the Paris Metro, but does not belong here. Otherwise, the musicianship is excellent throughout.

Casey's departure was her gain and the band's loss, but this album remains a must for lovers of Celtic music, and for followers of America's various folk traditions.

5 out of 5 stars Solas during their Prime! Pioneering Work!.......2004-10-20

Solas has changed recently since the departure of Karen Casey. I remember the good old days when this band gave Irish Traditional Music CPR while ripping through reels and jigs. There was world percussion and there was a driven pace set by John Doyle playing fast chord configurations. Karen was singing in both Irish Gaelic and English. High energy tracks followed by hauntingly beautiful songs. What fun! Their first four albums followed this frantic pace of inspired arrangements, with a little known tribute DVD to the old crew, "Solas," filmed during a concert with a supportive audience on Saint Patrick's Day in Burlington, Vermont. I strongly recommend all of the above Solas albums and DVD. With so little Irish Traditional Music on DVD, their DVD is a little known, but a rare gem.

5 out of 5 stars Easily accessible.......2004-04-19

This album is a good choice for anyone looking for uplifting music and excellent musicians.

I don't normally listen to this type of music but I found Solas to be very easily accessible.

5 out of 5 stars The Words That Remain.......2004-02-26

SOLAS continues to thrill listeners like me who are looking for world music they can get next to. SOLAS offers celtic music that makes you want to dance, beat a drum and sing along to. Whether the song is traditional or contemporary, you listen with a wink and a smile!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Celtic Music I've Heard.......2001-07-13

My sister knew of my passion for Celtic music and bought me this album for Christmas. The group is phenomenal and the music is lively. From folk songs to traditional jigs this album will brighten your day and lighten your heart. Some songs are English, some are in Galic and others are just instrumentals.

5 out of 5 stars grooves George Clinton would be proud of.......2007-04-25

I've been familiar with the Heads for decades, but only recently became a fan, thanks mainly to my nephew, who has the same curiosity toward rock music I do. I find now that I have cut my nose off to spite my face ignoring this piece so long.
David Byrne's nerd-psychotic personna drives the band, but what a band. Tina Weymouth is one of rock's greatest bassists ever, easily in the ranks of Stanley Clarke, Bootsy Collins or other great funk style players, and that's pretty heady company.
The grooves are the greatest thing about "Remain In Light", especially "The Great Curve" that features Adrian Belew on skronk guitar. The band shows its ability at great atmospherics with the one-two offering of "Lightning Wind" and "Overlord", which is a great hypnotic drone piece that reminds one of "Us And Them" from Pink Floyd or Zeppelin's "In The Light", yet not sounding derivative of either tune.
This is the Talking Heads' masterwork and belongs in your collection now.

5 out of 5 stars The Way to the Future.......2007-04-07

"Remain in Light" is one of the most progressive rock albums made in recent decades. At the time of its release it was a commercial failure for the band but critics have lauded it as a masterpiece since the time of its release and it was rated as the second best album of the 1980's by Pitchfork Media a couple of years back. I do not doubt that the praise is well-deserved. The album was so far ahead of its time that it is hard to believe it was released over a quarter of a century ago. Its synthesis of African guitar styles and rhythms with electronica, punk, New Wave and sounds coming from New York's early hip-hop scene indicated the way music would evolve over the coming twenty years more than any other record of its time. All of the songwriting credits are for David Byrne and producer Brian Eno but the band maintains the tracks came out of jams and certainly the musicianship is tight on the record. The songwriting is also remarkable. The first single "Once in a Lifetime" finds Byrne in a supposed middle-class paradise with a beautiful wife and home asking himself, "How did I get here?" Other tracks with their Brazilian and African rhythms seem to depict life the struggles of the poor in teeming cities. "Born Under Punches", the album opener, falls into this category. The second half of the album shows some highly innovative production. The gorgeous ballad "Listening Wind" is built around an infectious chorus and rather ominous sounding digital effects. The record culminates in "The Overload", a song that seems full of dread and gloom. Its slow, deadpan vocal and brooding arrangement set a truly apocylptic mood but this is not the type of music to hit you over the head with political slogans. The song's gloomy atmosphere hints at population overload, social decay and even doomsday but it is too subtle to overstate its case. What Talking Heads made with "Remain in Light" was one of the most innovative and haunting albums of their time. None of their subsequent releases were half as important as this. This is definitely one of those albums that every serious music-lover should know back to front.

1 out of 5 stars Album 5 Stars; Format ZERO.......2006-12-30

This album is amazing and fantastic, and the rating has no bearing on the Talking Heads or their musicianship.

The problem is with the format itself. I own the "Brick" boxset, and the only one that doesn't work in that is Remain In Light, which is also my favorite Heads album.

Since I received Brick as a gift, I couldn't return it so I just bought another Remain In Light, since hey I can throw 20 bucks David Byrne's way. But the one I bought was also defective, as was the replacement that Amazon sent (the very next day, superfast turn around from those guys).

So, in my experience, 3 out 3 of this particular disc is defective. All of my DVD sides worked fine, but the audio sides did not.

4 out of 5 stars Great music - Poor format.......2006-11-10

I have yet to be able to play this disc at full 96K audio resolution. All of the DVD-A players I have tried it on choke on the DVD-A track.

That being said, they can all access the regular DVD Dolby 5.1 track, and while that isn't as good as the unplayable DVD-A track, it still sounds great. The remastering is really top notch, and the surround format works very well with this highly percussive and multi-tracked recording. This is one of my favorite albums, and it has never sounded better. A huge improvement over the original CD release.

Which is why it irks me all the more that I can't get to the DVD-A track. I bought two other Talking Heads DVD-A discs, and they all exhibited exactly the same problems. The whole set should have been recalled. This disc is just good enough that I won't send it back, but if had been any lesser recording I would have demanded my money back.

5 out of 5 stars Essential to understand the end of disco and 70's punk.......2006-07-29

Remain in Light by the Talking Heads is disco, punk, funk, electronica, jazz, soul, gospel and rock. I bet you have one question to ask me is that possible? Yes it is and I will tell you why. Talking Heads came out of the CBGB scene which was usually known for the punk and new wave that originated there. With the electronic edge in Remain in Light they became the way they were at the end of their career. David Byrne is considered the genius of Talking Heads but I always will think that they would have gotten nowhere if it wasn't for the band in a whole and of course the help of Brian Eno. So why should you buy remain in light because it is one of the only ways you will understand the end of disco and 70's punk.

3 out of 5 stars Really good, but not spectacular.......2007-01-29

I loved 11 Dreams. Well...I loved enough songs to buy it and enjoy it....and go back to it from time to time. Mercenry have a really fresh take on melodic death. They are, like others describe, a blend of Soilwork, COB, and Into Eternity...only they really have a unique take. They don't sound too copy cat like other bands.

Anyway...this new release is top notch production and great musicianship, but after a while, I am left feeling flat. Every song pretty much resembles every other one. If you listen to 1 or 2 songs, then you're like WHOA!...but if you like to listen to CD's all the way through or repeat listens, this CD loses something.

The clean vocals are very good. They are my favorite part along with the piano. My complaint is that the tempo of their songs are all the same...mid tempo. It might be nicer to see them slow things up, or get nastier...give the listener something unexpected.

All in all, I love the CD...it just feels like these guys have TONS of potential, but are just staying with what they know best. I would give this a 3.5 if I could...but I'm not quite at the 4 star range.

4 out of 5 stars Best Mercenary yet, but still missing something............2006-11-06

This is a good album. Scratch that, it's a really REALLY good album. But it's not great, amazing, or groundbreaking. The biggest change on this album from Mercenary's past releases is the absence of bassist/singer Henrik "Kral" Andersen (quit before album came out). In my own opinion, this is the best thing that has happened to this band. The songs on this album really feature lead singer Mikkel Sandager's great vocal range and delivery, providing numerous memorable hooks and some really tight harmonies, really pushing the singing aspect of this band to a new height.

And then of course there's the bad. Well, not so much the bad as much as the "under-realized". While the vocals on the album are great, the music can get rather "bleh". No real steps foward have been taken in the musical aspect from 11 Dreams, and I feel this album features at least 2, if not 3, throw away tracks. But again, it's not nessecarily a bad thing. The album drags in the middle, like many albums tend to, but the good eventually outshine the bad on this offering.

So, in conclusion, it's a 3.5, but on the high side, so I'll go with a 4. Recceomended listening: "Redefine Me", "My World Is Ending", "Soul Decision", "My Secret Window", "Hours That Remain"

4 out of 5 stars Genre-Bending Masterpiece.......2006-10-28

Now this is what metal is all about! Aggression, innovation, defying expectations - Mercenary has it all covered. My first exposure to this band was at the ProgPower USA fest in 2003, where the band's genre-bending mix of progressive and death metal hit me like a steel-toed boot to the chest. Throw Brainstorm, Tad Morose, Nevermore, Soilwork, Dark Tranquillity, and In Flames into a blender, and what comes out will sound a lot like Mercenary. Canada's Into Eternity is the only other band that comes close, but I find them a bit too sterile for my tastes. Cut to 2006 and not only is there a new Mercenary album available, but the band returned to ProgPower for another fantastic performance (two words: Pantera cover).

The Hours That Remain is another triumphant Mercenary album. Just as 11 Dreams was an improvement over an already excellent Everblack, The Hours That Remain is another step forward. Mercenary succeeds in building on their previous albums' foundations and at the same time improving their overall sound. There is still the death metal aggression that extreme metal fans crave, but it is equally matched with a progressive metal band's technical proficiency. The band continues to improve their songwriting skills (which were pretty solid to begin with), which has a lot to do with why The Hours That Remain may just be Mercenary's finest album to date.

Mercenary is the open-minded metal fan's dream come true. I truly believe that in the near future this band will be one of the dominant forces in metal.

NOTE: Early versions of The Hours That Remain came with a bonus DVD featuring interviews, behind the scenes material, and live footage. It's a great bonus to an already excellent album.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best songs I've ever heard!.......2001-07-18

These guys are some of the nicest people you would ever want to meet and they KNOW country music! 'You Have the Right to Remain Silent' is a gem of a song. I have other personal favorites from this album and I sing along regularly! Steve Murray has been singing since high school and has a rich and unique voice. He sings sad songs, up-beat songs, and classics equally well. You should hear him do 'Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay'!! I could be partial since I know him well and since I recently married his cousin and now we're related, but if you love real songs that exemplify great country music, this album is for you!

4 out of 5 stars We need more of these guys!.......2000-06-28

Whilst some of the songs on this CD aren't to my personal liking (It's up to you) the others are so fantastic that they make up for any shortfalls. You Have The Right to Remain silent is a beauty, but best of all is No 7, Who are You? Worth a listen too for sure!, and i'll be first in line for the next CD.

5 out of 5 stars What a great album.......2000-05-29

These guys may be the most under-rated group in country music. This album, their first, has several of the best songs I've ever heard, delivered in a way you can't forget. The title cut, and the unforgettable ballad, "I'm A Stranger Here Myself" are what the genre is all about. A classic blend of artists and material.

5 out of 5 stars You Have The Right To Remain Silent.......2000-01-24

Great songs that touch true life experiences that all can relate to. This group of artists have all the potential needed with their soul touching lyrics and their cowboy manners. Live performances will not soon be forgotten..these artists are down to earth and a pleasure to watch, as well as listen to....hoping for more releases in the near future.

4 out of 5 stars X-Cops-'You Have The Right To Remain Silent'(Metal Blade).......2005-07-16

'You Have The Right...' is actually better than what I had expected. As most of you know, this was a Gwar side-project. X-Cops have sort of come up with an all new (for them anyway)view of life, an extremely dark and devious look at law enforcement. Alright! Someone had to do it, right? With tunes like "Cavity Search", "The Party's Over", "5-0", "Third Leg" and "You F**ked Up", I have to admit 'You Have The...' is quite fun to listen to. About as heavy as Gwar. Give it a shot, see what you think. Mature audiences only, please. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars You have the right to remain VIOLENT!.......2003-10-17

X-Cops is prolly one of the better GWAR side pojects..the music is a little more serious unlike GWAR or DBX....the music is much more hardcore...most of it's growling speed metal into somewhat of a highway rock sound...good stuff....nowhere near as silly as GWAR or Brockie's stuff..but there are a few chuckles in here...and Brockie provides them...musicaly this is some metal stuff..check it out..."Welcome to New Jersey" and "The Party's Over" plus the opening track "Interloper" shred up on the guitar and speedy double bass...GWAR fan's must have!

5 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2003-09-15

SICK group comprised mainly of the good ol' boys of GWAR, X-Cops somehow manage to get more brutal than the band that spawned them. Orr's snarling vocals go along with the million-mile-an-hour drum blasts, accompanied well by Brockie on bass and Derks on guitar. Imagine death metal, thrash, punk and speed metal rolled into one blistering experience and that's what X-Cops are. The high points, in my opinion, are the eerie "Cavity Search" and "The Party's Over," for lightening up the pace of the album for a minute or two, plus it's got a killer bass line. Right to Remain Silent is a must for any GWAR afficianado.

5 out of 5 stars they line up around the block to suck the ghost of hitlers ?.......2002-06-22

If you know gwar then you know what youre getting. comprised of the members of the aforementioned as well as kepone (or so i think), this album is a festival of violence as well as kick ... musicianship. If i had to suggest the best time to play this it has to be when your in your car and want to tear it up. just put on the instrumental "tune up time" and youll be hitting warp speed in a flash. Deep Purple never "shot you in the face" but they may as well have due to the superior (as well as lyrically enhanced) version of "highway star" <--- a song to help you be just that. As a New Jerseyan (huh) i love the synapses of my home state on the tune "welcome to new jersey" they sum it up and make known our continental blackballing by singing "they got the giants they got the jets they got it all but they get no respect" speed metal at its finest by some of the most underrated goons in the scene ...

5 out of 5 stars GWAR fans, you'll love this..........2000-04-05

I really enjoyed this CD. This CD is as good as the music that they make for GWAR, only louder. I highly recomend it. If you like GWAR, you'll love this.

There are many parallels between the Grateful Dead and a beloved sports team. Deadheads would fervently root for their squad, cheer wildly for successful spurts, forgive the "team" after a "loss" (subpar show), and return again for the next "game." They even keep track of the "statistics." Now, of course, the team has lost its star player--its heart and soul, its leading scorer, its off-the-court leader--and fans have been forced to readjust expectations. But these Other Ones can still win a few ball games playing an updated style that still leaves plenty of room for improvisation and features new teammates such as old friend Bruce Hornsby, jazz saxophonist Dave Ellis (who broadens the sonic palette), and the twin lead-guitar tandem of Mark Karan and Steve Kimock (who consistently weave intriguing lines around each other). They've added five new "plays" (songs) to the standard Dead playbook and even unearthed a couple of older ones ("St. Stephen," "The Eleven"). Still, without Jerry Garcia, they're no longer championship caliber--maybe at best a playoff contender--and, most important, they're just not as fun to root for. --Marc Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Get it.......2004-11-10

I went to this tour in 1998. Unfortunately I was 9 years old then. This is a great way to remember the things I don't remember. I've listened to most albums by the Grateful Dead and this is the Grateful Dead. The only thing I wish was on the tour/CD was Jerry. The White Wheeled Limousine and St. Stephens were unbelievable. I think this CD captures the more jam band aspect of the Dead, which is what they're known for. If you want to hear good live music from this band, this is the CD to get.

4 out of 5 stars good energy, jamming, and true spirit on display.......2004-08-02

Not terrific all the way through, but the standout tracks on here make up for the crap (corinna, phil's vocals, and mickey's "singing" for the most part). It's a known fact that Garcia had a musical connection w/Hornsby-listen to some of the east coast fall '90 run for examples aplenty-and it really is the talent of hornsby and the teamwork of Karan/Kimock that makes this set shine. The Jack Straw>Sugaree is pretty much as good as it gets pre or post jerry (alot of heads will beg to differ, but the only Grateful Dead Sugaree that compares is the 12.10.89 LA Forum version-breathtaking!) However, the Jammed-out conclusion of Jack Straw and the tension-and-release style of jamming on the subsequent Sugaree is not to be missed. The Eleven is really well-done, too, and it's lyrics are kind of tough to phrase correctly but Bobby shines here. The Hornsby contributions, particularly White-wheeled limosine, are killer-and modified a bit to suit the particular taste of picky heads.

Complaints? Mountains of the Moon is a welcome tune, and one that the Dead had abondoned long long ago, but Lesh's singing is horrible to be blunt. And alot of people dig Estimated Prophet, but I for one never felt it was that great-more annoying than anything. But the energy and teamwork on display here is easily worth the price. A worthy live double-disc set for any music fan.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional renderings!.......2002-05-29

Don't let all those post-Garcia Deadhead wannabees fool ya THE OTHER ONES is the real thing. The various selections compliment the original versions(with Garcia)...and even improve on them in some cases. The reason is primarily because THE OTHER ONES never get too spacy or loose, but rather keep it punchy and tight. You could say the sound is more rock oriented and the overall effort shines because of this!!

5 out of 5 stars Better than expected-Dead transition album.......2001-04-14

... The first CD is OK, but the second CD blew me away.

The first CD would only rate 3 to 4 stars. It starts out like a Greatful Dead tribute album, with the band sounding like it is trying to just copy its older versions. The songs are nice, but they are nothing new or special. The good parts are where the band opens up and the guitarists don't try to sound like Garcia. There is no room for the saxophone in the arrangements of the songs, but it is crammed in anyway. The sax is really out of place and just a noisy overlay on some songs. There is also a totally needless version of Garcia's Sugaree.

But at the end of the first CD,the band really starts moving with Estimated Prophet. Everything clicks on this song. It is also a refreshing change of pace since the Dead rarely played it in concert.

The second CD starts with some of the best space music ever played. This is on a par with the wild improvising the group did in the Blues For Allah days. Here the guitars, saxophones and keyboards intermix for a wonderful sound. There are also some very nice accoustic songs with a sound reminiscent of the fantasitic "Without A Net" CD. Friend of the Devil is especially good.

No matter what anyone else says, this is a transistional Grateful Dead album. All the members of the Dead from the nineties are here, except Jerry Garcia and Bill Kruetzman. Even Phil Lesh and Bruce Hornsby are in the group. Even when Jerry Garcia was alive, the Grateful Dead was continually evolving, and going into different phases. This is just a different phase....

5 out of 5 stars This is not your father's Grateful Dead..........2000-12-07

I get so tired of hearing people complain that The Other Ones are band of musicians "trying to be the Grateful Dead without Jerry." But this band is NOT the Grateful Dead...these are the "other ones" from that fabled band. I was fortunate to have witnessed the group both times that they had toured (Summer '98 and Late Summer '00), and this disc does capture, as well as any recording can, the spirit and music that had came out on the '98 tour. The idea was to take the songs made famous by the Grateful Dead and transform it into something different.

Highlights of the discs for me, include the following: A transformed "Saint Stephen-->The Eleven", a rip-roaring "Corrina", a sinewy "The Other One", and the latest Bob Weir-Robert Hunter collaboration, the ethereal "Banyan Tree". In addition, the band has re-arranged several of Bruce Hornsby's songs. It sounds as if they had been written for the Grateful Dead. Listening to "Rainbow's Cadillac", I had almost thought the band was heading into "Franklin's Tower."

The band members are playing extremely well, perhaps in part to the new (and sometime old) players, particularily Bruce Hornsby and Dave Ellis. The guitarists are excellent. Steve Kimock captures the essence of Garcia's silvery-tones, while Mark Karan infuses the music with a touch of rock and blues. Bob Weir sounds "grate", vocally and instrumentally.

In short, buy this disc. It may not be the Grateful Dead, but its still good.

The music never stops...
