Album Description
The CD Places I've Been..People I've Known is eclectic: blues, jazz, neo-folk and even a little country melded by the versatile and large talent of vocalist and songwriter, Charisse Lowe. Producer Harvey Gerst characterizes the songs as little gems, "beautiful by themselves, gorgeous as a complete necklace. An embarrassment of riches."Customer Reviews:
Red Dirt Girl Comes Highly Recommended.......2001-09-26
Not only are all the songs first rate but the arrangements are tight and really cook, a testament to Charisse and to producer Harvey Gerst.
The album kicks off with Life Road Blues with its gospel flavouring. Little prepares you though for Taillights, an instant clasic of rare beauty that throws in flute and cello to emphasise the pathos of the song. It reminded me of a Lennon/McCartney style ballad whilst being totally original. The song is sure to be covered by many artists and will help Charisse grow rich on the royalties. The extensive range of the album is emphasised by Adam Everyday with its southern holler style harmonica. We next have Dancer's Grace,a lyrical piece that uncannily mirrors the real life story of ballerina Alexandra Danilova. The album title comes from Dark Secrets and perhaps the album standout track is Red Dirt,a song already attracting much attention with its perfect country credentials and melodic hook line that continues to spin around in my head.
Lime Green Sweater shows Charisse in vamp bluesy style and Leavin' the North has a warm reflective style that is autobiographical and tells of her migration from Connecticut to South Carolina. The album contains four other songs, all of which are excellent. These are What I Need To Know,Matisse's Violin ( complete with classy fiddle work), Perfect Stranger and Arms Around Me Still, a moving story of human loss after the death of a loved one.
The Nashville and Austin music scenes and beyond should pay careful attention to the Charisse Lowe phenomenon. Her warm and expressive vocals, covering, as they do, such an extensive range, will provide endless listening pleasure. The CD will never be far from my player and the music contained here will remian long in the memory. I hope many other listeners will derive as much pleasure from this album as I have done. Personally I can't wait for Charise's next offering.
