Broken Road

An air of ambition, however aware of tradition, floats through guitarist Jeff White's sequel to his Rounder debut, The White Album, and raises the stakes on this elegant, lyrical bluegrass recording. Drawing on the musicians who've aided him in the past--Vince Gill (White has played in his touring band), Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Jason Carter, and underrated banjo picker Pete Wernick--White also draws heavily on his own songs, something too few bluegrass musicians can or will do. Though he covers Bill Monroe and Vince Gill, the best material is his own, especially the stately drive of "The Broken Road" and the true-to-life rambling blues of "I'll Make My Way." Bluegrass into country, honky-tonk back into bluegrass--genres flow freely when the musicians are as gifted as these, and when the singer has the ripe, immediately believable tone White possesses. And categories like traditional, progressive, and mainstream disappear when the music is this easy-going and accomplished. --Roy Kasten

As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

An epic film score receives epic treatment with The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings. Released for the first time on CD, the complete score for the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy contains more than 180 minutes of music on three CDs plus a DVD-Audio disc of the entire score in Surround Sound. Breathtaking and majestic, the 2001 Oscar and Grammy winning score compsted by Howard Shore also includes Enya's Oscar nominated "May It Be." For fans of any of The Lord of the Rings films, the Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings is an essential experience.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-15

I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-06-12

This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music tracks from Movie.......2007-05-03

Brings the movie back as you listen to the full version of the track.

3 out of 5 stars Complete?.......2007-04-07

This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.

3 out of 5 stars Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03

I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful !!!!.......2007-07-07

This was my first introduction to Selah, and I am so-o-o happy I purchased this CD! Very poignant lyrics and beautiful music. My favorites are Gentle Healer and Glory, but really the whole CD is just wonderful. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - contemporary twist to old favorites - making them new all over again!.......2007-06-22

I will probably always be one to recommend a Selah album, because I grew up in a church visited yearly by Nicol and Todd's parents, Congo missionaries Jim and Nancy Smith and used to hear the whole family sing way back when (in fact, I think my parents have an old record of hymns the family put out years ago!). That being said, this album is amazing! I've been listening to it over and over the last couple of weeks, hearing new layers every time. I love beautifully written lyrics - the mix of these classics with the voices of the Selah members and their duet partners is matchless.

At first listen, "Bless the Broken Road" stood out as my favorite, but then I listened more closely to "All My Tears," which I'd surprisingly never heard before. Now it stands out as my favorite on the album, esp. with Kim Hill's folksy sound, and one of my favorite songs ever.

Completely a stand-out album - so much depth and breadth.

Oh - and for those that didn't know, Nicol stepped out to raise her family and support her husband at Moody Bible Institute's grad school. She's worked some on solo stuff, too.

5 out of 5 stars Christain Music.......2007-05-16

This is a from the heart CD. The song Bless the Broken Road would be applicable to everyone who has traveled a rocky road to find the peace and joy a Christian experiences. Another song, profound, outright addresses death and burial. Sounds gruesome, but it is awesome. No rock bands here, just beautifully orchestrated music that is uplifting and encouraging.

4 out of 5 stars Love Selah~.......2007-05-09

Loved most of the CD. Not their best in my opinion, but worth having.
There are some great songs here.

5 out of 5 stars Keeps getting better.......2007-04-11

This "album" is their best yet. Selah fans won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Selah's Sturdy and Scenic "Road".......2006-08-28

Prime Cuts: Bless the Broken Road (with Melodie Crittenden), I Will Sing of My Redeemer (with Barlowgirl), Gentle Healer (with Amy Perry)

Lead singers who define their group's personas place the entire ensemble in a lucrative position when they decide to depart. This was the predicament Selah faced when Nicol Sponberg had had decided to leave the trio. However, that is only half the group's vexation: country artist Melodie Crittenden who was supposed to be Sponberg's successor left late last year. In a move, albeit a wise one, to divert the attention away from the group's nonplused identity this duets CD was birth. With a heightened spotlight on the duet partners including luminaries such as Jason and Adam of the Crabb Family, Barlowgirl, Nicole Nordeman, Christy Nockels of Watermark, Kim Hill, Plumb among others, this allows Selah to buy time in order to re-construct their identity. This time instead of putting all of one's eggs in a basket, the group members as well as new member Amy Perry share around the microphone.

Musically, "Bless the Broken Road" is still consummate Selah. Their signature palette of hymn-like ballads with a contemporary edge still abound. Unlike many of their peers, these songs are spiritually meaty entrenched with deep theologically truth without resigning to those repetitive nondescript love songs to Jesus. Most spiritually penetrating is "Gentle Healer." The breathtakingly simple melody of this Michael Card ballad basks a carefully nuanced narrative that attests even handedly to the humanity and divinity of Christ. Not a group known to obviate the tough issues, Julie Miller's "All My Tears" (also covered by Jars of Clay) deal unapologetically with the issue of death. Kim Hill's Appalachian-sounding vocals add an added haunting element to this Americana-tingled ballad. Plumb, who has been known for her electronic-rock mores, offers her vocals and her pen to a surprising low-keyed Christmasy ballad "Mary Sweet Mary." While Barlowgirl add their reverential harmonies to the hymn-like newly composed "I Will Sing of My Redeemer." Also destined to be a Selah classic is the David Grow composed ballad "Be Thou Near to Me," a soft prayer that calls to mind the hymn "Pass Me Not O Gentle Savior" is a track the trio first recorded with Jim Brickman a year or so ago for his "Grace" CD.

When addressing the issue of human relationships "Bless the Broken Road" (a track first recorded by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and turned into a monster hit by Rascal Flatts) is a breadth of fresh air. While many today rushed into relationships that are not God-ordained and mature, "Bless the Broken Road" tells about the advantage of waiting for the right one. Made even more poignant is Melodie Crittenden's first hand experience of having to live out this song. On this ballad heavy album, "Follow Jesus (Landa Yesu)" with its upbeat Congo-inspired beat is quite welcoming. Inspired by the missionary work in Africa, augmented with some chants in African, "Follow Jesus" is delightful and Nicole C. Mullen sounds equally at home with her vivacious vocal support. However, not everything works: "Ain't No Grave," a Russ Taff classic has been reprised here. Jason and Adam of the Crabb Family together with Todd Smith just do not have the soul to undertake this bluesy Gospel tune. They do not have the grit and gravitas to let this tune soar. Christy Nockels of Watermark though is in fine vocal form, but her duet here "Faithful One" which clocks over 5 minutes is plain dull.

Nevertheless, as far as duet albums go, "Bless the Broken Road" paves a path that is sturdy and made sonically scenic via the duet partners. As with all Selah's albums, their tight harmonies lacing their signature hymn-like theologically informed ballads are in galore here. Most encouraging is that Todd Smith who takes up the lion share of the lead vocals sound more confident and his ability to engage with the various duet partners is accommodating. Here's looking forward to the reformed Selah on an outing of their own.

I have been listening to the "cemetary shoes" album. Okay now be warned before you rush into Johnny he is considered to be in the Genre of "PSYCHOBILLY" so if you do not have at least a passsing appreciation of Rockabilly, punk, goth, and alt country. So don't blame me if he scares the hell out of you or you just don't get it, but if you can get past any prejudices or dislikes you initially have of the music and really listen to the man, he has something to say and a very unique way of saying it. you can hear a few samples of Johnny on his website at www.johnnydowd.com Here are the lyrics to one of his songs that I really like the words to,

Billy Blu

A crooked little man / lives in the underground
Sometimes he goes up / but mostly he stays down

People call him Billy / William is his name
In the coming darkness / he's the keeper of the flame

He repairs radios / with alien transistors
Cosmic commnication / between brothers and sisters

He has information / unavailable to most
He converses with angels / and sleeps with ghosts

Silence is a sadness / a bird with a song
Billy is a sailor / between right and wrong

A world of light and promise / is beyond his memory
In the present he is occupied / preparing for eternity

Lucifer is coming / don't let the children hear
The devil's in the wood pile / judgment day is near

Things that seem simple / are extremely complicated
When you scratch the surface / of things gold-plated

© Johnny Dowd

I hope the more adventurous of you take a listen and give him half a chance and those less adventurous look at all the pictures of his pretty face (well at least that was the one good thing one young lady could find about him). On another interesting note about Johnny he didn't record his first album until he was 50 years old. Well guess I can't complain I didn't put out my first book until I was 34, and I had twenty odd years of material back logged. Which we can really blame on Bob because I really didn't think much of the "bits" I wrote until I heard SBR and I thought man I want to make statements like that. I look at Johnny's lyrics and it so often reminds me of the ways that I string words together. So take a listen, check out what he says, and always keep an open mind, remember don't judge a book by it's cover (or a book of poetry by it's title).

2 out of 5 stars Meh........2004-11-12

Man oh man...you know I love JD, but this album is sort of making me question me faith. I question whether two stars is really fair, but I gave three to The Pawnbroker's Wife, and this is definitely inferior to that one, so that's what it's getting. The most obvious disappointment here--and I think most fans would agree with me on this--is the absence of the immaculate Kim Sherwood-Caso's vocal talents. This was always a big part of the appeal of any Dowd album; she made good songs into stunning songs, and I suspect that, even if the ones here aren't as good as usual, she could have partially redeemed some of them. I certainly hope the two of them haven't had some sort of falling out, and that we'll hear more of her in future Dowd recordings.

Here's what's good about this album: the frenzied 'Garden of Delights.' I would say that this is the one song here that approaches classic status; an unnervingly intense tale of murder/suicide. Also pretty good: 'Wedding Dress,' with its entertaining southern gothic lyric (maybe Dowd should write books). That and 'Brother Jim' have a gospel feel to them (even if one's about a crossdressing butcher and the other a clerical murderer). 'Whisper in the Nag's Ear' might be okay on its own, but it just seems pointlessly overdone compared to the spare original version on Pictures From Life's Other Side.

But...most of the songs are just kind of there. Not unpleasant to listen to, but not exactly exciting either. I expect a lot more from the guy who wrote 'Worried Mind' and 'Hell or High Water.' Better luck next time.

5 out of 5 stars Clever, smart, interesting music.......2004-11-09

Johnny Dowd makes me appreciate having ears to hear with and a mind to think with. Here is a man who, in a just world, would enjoy the success that more commercial musicians do today; that he does not is a real crime (then again, the world's loss is his fans' gain). His music is deep, dark and thoughtful, but well crafted, like an Alfred Hitchcock film. The tunes take some getting used to, as does his voice, because they cover material not usually associated with today's homogenized and emasculated pop and radio scene. But like most acquired tastes, you wonder how you ever got along without it. He writes music like the moon casts shadows, makes you look over your shoulder, and consider your fate. His albums, including his recent, Cemetary Shoes, deal with topics from the seamy side of life, a portion of the world that is anathema to the Britneys, the Jessicas, and the other pop tarts of music. If you appreciate artistry, thought and challenge, check out the Dowd catalog. Stretch your imagination a little. Take a chance on his music and experience an enveloping warmth that is cognition and emotion melding.

    4 out of 5 stars Well-Scrubbed Bluegrass.......2002-01-22

Jeff White's "Broken Road" CD is great bluegrass fun for the whole family! The title tune has great banjo & fiddles with good lyrical depth, "In another rhelm where no one dwells, I wait here endlessly for another soul on this broken road to beckon faithfully*." Great banjo picking highlights the country "Lonesome As It Gets." "Stay Away From Me" is a fast pretty little tune. "Cliffs by the Sea" is a slow ballad with a beautiful fiddle part. Fast finger picking is the hallmark of "Rich Gal." There will be "hell to pay" if you "Bet On An Angel," a pretty uptempo melody. "Cheater's Heart" is a another pretty melody about a relationship breaking up, "Where do you turn when the road ahead is crumbling? What do you do when the love you knew is crumbling & you're left with a cheater's heart?" "The Struggle" is a slow sad country tune that makes me feel like I'm back in Iowa sitting in the Little Brown Church again, "One day I saw the Light & I knew I'd won the fight!" "This Lonely Heart of Mine" is a peppy tune with nice harmonies and some fierce mandolin pickin'. Perky fiddle in the bluegrass mode about a young person going away from home dresses up "I'll Make My Way." "I'm Not a Stranger to Love" is an aching slow tune followed by "I Wonder," a midtempo toe tapper. "The Only Girl" is a pretty banjo-picking love song. Jeff's set closes with a spooky ballad with some great manodlin, "The Fiddle in the Trees." Jeff's music is good quality bluegrass, well-scrubbed fun you can play with your kids in the car.

*I couldn't quite tell if he was singing "faithfully" or "fatefully," but I chose the former! :)

    5 out of 5 stars From a White Heart.......2000-08-13

I haven't seen Jeff White in about 25 years...since high school graduation...but I heard that he had 'made it bigtime'... Well last night I was treated to a Jeff White concert in his hometown and I was more than impressed!! I listened to bluegrass a LONG time ago and more recently had become a fan of Allison Krauss (without knowing that Jeff had been in her band)... and listening to him last night rekindled my appreciation of this unique brand of music. Jeff White is the same REAL person he was when he left our hometown of North Manchester, IN some 20 years ago...and found his true musical love...don't miss this one!! It's from Jeff White's heart and it's for real!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Follow Up To ...The White Album!.......2000-01-02

Jeff White has done it again on this wonderful CD full of heartfelt Bluegrass music. I especially like "Lonesome as it gets","Cliffs by the sea" and "This Lonely Heart of mine".The last song penned by Vince Gill who provides background vocals on most of the songs on this CD. I look forward to Jeff's next project and want to thank him for introducing me to Bluegrass music!

    2 out of 5 stars Broken Road.......1999-11-23

Broken Road is a disappointment to any hard core bluegrass fan in search of crisp acoustic guitar instrumentals or compelling and original songs. The lyrics are forced and cliche'd and the tunes are eminently forgettable, and the producers have smothered whatever originality is present with the dobro whinings of Jerry Douglas.

5 out of 5 stars Jeff White is an amazingly talented artist.......1999-09-02

I have both CD's by Jeff White and have had the opportunity to meet this man in person. He is so talented vocally and musically. The White album renewed my love in bluegrass music and his latest CD The Broken Road is just as great. I am glad that he did more of the songwriting this time around and I eagerly await anything else he comes out with. Don't waste time, buy this as soon as possible.
