Ah,yes, Ron Raines expresses his love of Broadway music with a beautiful baritone voice which possesses all of the passion of a great lover! A magnificent performance throughout the CD. A must for every true lover of Broadway music. It rates a Ten Star on a five star scale!!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful album.......2005-04-23

Ron Raines does a fabulous job singing broadway songs. His voice is truly fantastic. He has a perfect voice for broadway songs and ballads. I think the song selection he chose is really wonderful and a great variety from different musicals. His first album was fantastic and so is this one. I'd highly recommend both albums. His voice is truly wonderful and a beautiful experience to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Ron Raines Continues His Beautiful singing.......2005-04-01

This is the second in Ron Raines series of Broadway Classics. It is just as beautiful as his first one. Close your eyes when you listen to him and you will believe that you are in a theater. You won't be disappointed if you like Broadway! The more I listen to Ron Raines sing, the better I like him. I hope he will make a new CD soon. He sings the songs that men sing in the original Broadway shows. It is great! This singer should be in everyone who likes music's collection

1 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2003-11-25

I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.

Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.

5 out of 5 stars Inexorable wonder!.......2001-06-23

Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!

5 out of 5 stars The best ever version.......2002-06-07

The wonderful cast transports you to the realms of Gilbert and Sullivan, to make you feel that you are experiencing a first night in 1881! John Reed, as Bunthorne, an aesthetic poet is superb, camp, subversive and a complete fraud. If anyone is not aware, the story of the opera is based upon the idiosyncracies of the Aesthetic movement in England of the 1880's and Gilbert used the public parodies of his friend Oscar Wilde as his major source. The rest of the cast, chorus and orchestra , under the long experienced 'Goddie' are superlative and make for one of the finest line-ups in D'Oyly Carte history. Revel and enjoy, for this is quite the best.

5 out of 5 stars The Golden Cast of D'Oyly Carte!.......1999-04-13

My wish had always been to see John Reed and the D'Oyly Carte Company in a performance of Patience. My mother had done so, remarking that, 'You'd need patience to watch it', she was coloured in her opinion, since she wanted to see 'The Mikado', but had gotten the wrong tickets! The recording, made in 1961, is superb in every detail. You are with the cast, on stage, in the auditorium, it is such a 'live' performance. The dialogue is delivered exquisitely, whilst the singing is uniformerly of the highest standard. I recently portrayed 'Bunthorne' and throughout my performances, I felt that I was continuing the legacy of Gilbert and Sullivan. All the past history of performers were there. I feel that Patience is a magical Savoy Opera. Do not miss the opportunity to own such a definitive performance. Maybe the subject of the 'Art Nouveau' periodof Victorian England is dated, but as one critic has already stated, every generation 'throws up' its poseures, to be knocked. 'Ah, me! lack aday!' BUY IT!

4 out of 5 stars The Definitive Recording.......1998-12-09

For those who prefer the traditional Savoyard renderings of the G&S canon, this is far and away the best recording of this parody of the cult of celebrity. John Reed leads the cast as a delightful Bunthorne, and the recording contains all of the opera's dialogue. "HMS Pinafore," "The Mikado," and "The Pirates of Penzance" may be better known, but "Patience" is deserving of a wider audience.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars One more time........2006-08-24

This album by Buck Owens was released in July, 1965. It was titled after his latest Number One hit, "Before You Go", and it's b-side, "No One But You". The inclusion of the b-side in the album title is surprising, since it wasn't a hit. However, the album does have another song which went on to become a Number One hit, "Gonna Have Love". Besides those songs, the rest of the album is pretty good, too. Several good original songs and a couple of cool instrumentals. But my favorite, other than the hits, is a fun cover version of the Coasters R&B/novelty classic "Charlie Brown". The CD adds two bonus tracks, which are instrumental versions of Buck Owens hits from the Buckaroos album "The Buck Ownes Songbook". Buck Owens fans will enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Another Good One.......2006-04-13

SunDazed Records deserves recognition for releasing most of Buck Owens' Collection. This one "Before You Go" is one fine album. While it doesn't have the lyrical excitement of "Tiger By The Tail", this album showcases the craftmanship of the Buckaroos (and not just the stellar Don Rich). There are two instrumental tracks at the end of this Cd: the title track "Before You Go", and "Love's Gonna Live Here". And there's the raucous "Charlie Brown" that unabashedly shows the rockabilly influence that Don Rich brought to the Buckaroos. Sticking to his usual 2:00 formula, Buck brings 11 other songs to the table, including "Gonna Have Love", "No Fool Like an Old Fool", and "I Betcha Didnt Know". I suggest you get the whole SunDazed collection of Buck Owens, and this one should be near the top of your list. A+

3 out of 5 stars Another good mid-60s LP from Buck and the boys.......2002-03-25

The crispness of the music presented here, the stellar Owens/Rich harmonies, the twangy telecaster picking, and the solid rhythm section that swings on a dime from two-steppers to waltzes to shuffles would probably rate four-stars for any other band. But rated against the phenomenal run of music that Owens and the Buckaroos laid down throughout the '60s, the songs on this 1965 release prove a notch less moving than on the band's best LPs.

The opening single (which spent six weeks at #1) shows just how fine this band was at this point in their career, breaking from an upbeat rhythm to a downbeat waltz (and back again) without even blinking an eye. Owens and Don Rich added two more co-writes, "Getting Used to You" and the two-stepper, "No Fool Like an Old Fool." Owens' ex-wife, Bonnie, helped with the songwriting on the acoustic-and-steel ballad, "There's Gonna Come a Day," as well as the Don Rich sung "Number One Heel."

Owens teamed with fellow Bakersfieldian Red Simpson to write, "Gonna Have Love," featuring a stellar guitar solo from Don Rich and swingin' drums from Willie Cantu, and "(I Want) No One But You." Owens added two more solo compositions, "There's Gonna Come a Day," recorded in 1963 and held until this release, as well as the instrumental, "Raz-Ma-Taz Polka." Steel player Tom Brumley chipped in a fine cover of the Leon McAuliffe chestnut, "Steel Guitar Rag."

The original album closed with a rave-up cover of the Coasters' "Charlie Brown," showing off the Buckaroos' humorous side. This CD reissue tacks on a pair of bonus instrumentals drawn from "The Buck Owens Songbook," featuring the Buckaroos under the direction of Don Rich.

Overall, a solid album and a fine addition to a complete Owens' reissue library, but not necessarily the high-point to start with.

3-3/4 stars, if Amazon allowed fractional ratings.

      5 out of 5 stars wait a day before..........2003-02-26

Listening to this cd, watch the film...enjoy it then when doing something like tidying your room, slap it on. You'll find-and i can guarentee this-that during a certain song reprisal, you'll stop and tears will come to your eyes and you'll wish you were a child again. That song is of course 'You Can Fly', it makes my cry, escpecially what happened to Bobby Driscoll.

5 out of 5 stars You Can Fly!.......2002-10-23

As a lover of Peter Pan, this CD was a wonderful addition to my collection. The songs are just wonderufl, and the instrumental music is great to hear when you've seen the movie, or even when you haven't! For anyone who is still yearning to let out their inner child, this is the CD for you!

5 out of 5 stars Super collection of Elgar's major works.......2004-06-28

Most compilations of composers works usually only feature, at best, maybe one or two works in recordings that are of outstanding quality, especially if different artists are featured. Such is absolutely not the case with this collection, one of the finest of its sort ever issued.

This box makes a perfect one stop shopping choice for the major, most-well-known works the British composer Sir Edward Elgar. The title is misleading though. The box, on 8 CDs at an incredible price, contains both Orchestral AND Choral works.
Since Amazon does not list the contents, I will :

      Symphony Nos. 1 & 2 -- LPO , Solti
Serenade for strings - ASMF , Marriner
Intro and Allegro - ECO , Britten
Cello Concerto - Webber , RPO , Menuhin
Enigma Var. -- CSO , Colti
Cockaigne Over -- LPO , Solti
Violin Con -- Chung , LPO , Solti
      Falstaff -- Montreal , Dutoit
Dream of Gerontius -- LSO , Britten
Sea Pictures -- RPO , Mackerras
In the South -- LPO , Solti
Pomp and Circumstance -- LPO , Solti
Imperial MArch -- Band of Grebadier Guards , Bashford
      Sospri -- ASMF , Marriner
      Elegy -- ASMF , Marriner
Wand of Youth -- Welsh NO , Mackerras
Starlight Express -- Welsh NO , Mackerras
Dream Children -- Welsh NO , Mackerras

Look up almost any of the individual works and you should be able to find these recordings in their individual issues, many with several 5 start ratings.

I won't elaborate on any of the specific recordings, just take my word for that there isn't a dud in the box.

If you have no Elgar, and you don't to hunt and peck for the right recordings of the best works, get this special set now.

      Album Description

The Wizard of Oz a musical with book and lyrics by L. Frank Baum and music by Paul Tietjens premiered on June 16, 1902, at the Grand Opera House in Chicago. It was an instant hit and made stars of David Montgomery (the Tin Woodman) and Fred Stone (the Scarecrow). On January 21, 1903 the show opened at the Majestic Theatre in New York. It ran for nine months and set out on the road with a second company right on its heels. The show toured, came back to New York, toured, and returned to New York again many times until finally disbanding around 1911. Stock and amateur companies continued to present it into the 1930s when it was overshadowed by the classic MGM film starring Judy Garland.

The show was legendary for its success and its impact on American culture. It was the Cats or Les Mis of the early 1900s--but the show has been swallowed by history. What made audiences of the early 1900s devour the show and return for more again and again? In this unprecedented 2-CD set—featuring over 145 minutes of vintage recordings and 64 pages of lyrics, photos, notes and synopsis—you can discover how The Wizard of Oz entertained the American public for the first two decades of the 20th century. And like the audiences of nearly a hundred years ago, you can hum along to "Budweiser," "Sammy," and "Hurrah for Baffin's Bay"—everyone's favorite songs from The Wizard of Oz! Also included in this comprehensive collection are recordings from later Oz musicals, The Woggle-Bug and The Tik-Tok Man of Oz written by Oz creator L. Frank Baum, as well as vintage non-Oz recordings by original "Wizard of Oz stars" Montgomery & Stone and Bessie Wynn

5 out of 5 stars A Collection of the Original Oz Stage Productions.......2006-12-07

This Double-Disk Collection contains music from the original and varied Oz Stage Productions: "the Wizard of Oz", "the Woggle-Bug" (based on 'Marvelous Land of Oz) and "the Tik-Tok Man of Oz" (based on 'Ozma of Oz'). There are plenty of "Wizard" songs and music, but there isn't a lot of "Woggle-Bug" and/or "Tik-Tok Man".
I often wondered how different the 1st & Original Production of 'Oz Wizard' was different to the book, and thanks to Mark Evan Schwartz's book "Oz: Before the Rainbow" I found out for myself (WORTH A READ!!). Later I got this CD to go along with the book's stage telling (more or less) and I listened in interest to the songs which, I read, were entirely different to the future Musicals of Oz. The songs are good, but not all of them are actually completely restored to perfection, so the singing may/will sound somewhat muffled. Also, due to the time it was made (for some reason), the songs don't actually fit into the story (even the stage's rewritten story) and sound distant/unrelated. But there are songs that sound similar to the original story ("Rejoice! The Wizard is No Longer King"). CD 2's Track 3 has music played during Silent Oz Film "His Majesty, Scarecrow" on the MGM 3-Disk DVD.
The best thing about this CD Collection is the two booklets packaged along with the disks: the first (entitled "The Records") has writing on "What the Wizard Was" with a synopsis of the stage production story and "About the Recordings", a listing of all the songs on CD 1 (which are helpful for "Selection" Tracks not specifically named on the back) and notes on the songs like their origins and background. Booklet 2 (entitled "The Lyrics") has the words to the songs (in case you can't make out the words/want to sing-along). BOTH CDs include b&w photos of the actors, performance (few of which can be seen in "Oz: Before the Rainbow" book) and even reprints of a few illustrations made for the stage. The pictures are the best part of this purchase.
The Entirely Different Songs may not fit with the story, original or rewritten, but there's nothing really wrong with the music when one enjoys to what they're listening to.
I know that there is also another 'Oz on Stage' CD Collection called "Before the Rainbow" . . . hmmm, I wonder if I should get that too?

      5 out of 5 stars Ain't it a Shame!.......2006-05-20

I think that this is a wonderful album of HISTORICAL value. Not too many people know this, but "the wizard of oz" was made into a smash hit in 1903, but because all the history was BARELY in obscurity, hungry tiger press wanted to educate the blockheads in the world about this remarkable piece of history. that being said, david maxine collected all of the old material, such as Piano rolls (my especial favorite of all of them is "the poppy song", i LOVE the bass notes: "nnn-ded-deh mmmm-ded-deh"), and music boxes, and cylinders, and records!
however, it is quite a shame that that CRAPPY movie with judy garland pushed this lovely musical into obscurity. i would have liked to see it in my day, but it was already lost in darkness, but thanks to the highly DIGNIFIED people in the world, this cd is available!! BUY IT!!!! I *ORDER* YOU!!! YOU CANNOT BE DIGNIFIED WITHOUT THIS REPLACING YOUR "RAP" GARBAGE WITH THIS JEWEL!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Why the 1903 "Wizard" was forgotten.......2004-03-20

This truly remarkable 2-disc collection of old cylinders, discs, music boxes and piano rolls explains why the 1903 musical version of "The Wizard of Oz" did not survive the early thirties. It wasn't because it was before its time or even of its time, but simply because it was way behind the times. Its producers resisted composer's Paul Tietjens' attempts to write plot-driven numbers. His contribution survives only in the incidental music preserved on piano rolls (and the most interesting element on this collection) linking very disparate and even incongruous vaudeville acts by various authors and performers that graced the stage during the musical's multi-decade run. In other words, Baum was telling a story and the songs were telling another... As fascinating as they are for historical reasons, those numbers are commonplace, mostly uninspired flash-in-the-tin-pan ditties, with timid syncopation and a stong reliance on musical clichés. There is not a single standard among them and not even a decent lyric where "fine" doesn't rhyme with "mine" and "love you" doesn't rhyme with "I do"- or even "I know you know I know you do", as happens more than once. As an assemblage of shtick pieces and ephemeral sentimental or nonsensical ditties, this collection cannot be topped and it represents a monumental effort. Without it and its very generous and informative liner notes, I would not have the same appreciation for the absolute genius of Victor Herbert's operettas ("Babes in Toyland" came out the same year) where the more memorable songs are plot-driven and introduced and linked by the most luscious, inventive and varied incidental music ever heard outside an opera house. This sort of unified concept would culminate in Jerome Kern's "Show Boat" and it remains a truth today that the integration of plot and music - reminiscent of opera - is the true secret of successful and perennial musicals, whatever the current idiom. This collection also makes one appreciate the complete originality of the Hollywood film for actually going back to Baum's books, entrusting the songs, lyrics and music to Harold Arlen, Yip Harburg and Herbert Stothart and scrapping the musical's colourful but checkered history (except for casting ex-vaudevillians as the main characters, of course!). Highly recommended for its nostalgia value, its irreplaceable rarities and a better understanding of the history of American popular music.

5 out of 5 stars A long overdue revisit to a classic American musical.......2003-09-30

Although it was one of the most financially successful stage musicals of the early 1900's, very little information is presently available on the 1903 production of THE WIZARD OF OZ. In what was obviously a labor of love, David Maxine has done much to correct this oversight by releasing a 2-CD set with over 145 minutes worth of extremely rare recordings of music from this and other OZ-themed musicals dating back to before World War I. Recorded materials include vintage acoustical disc and cylinder phonograph records, piano rolls, and music box discs, many of which go back almost a century. In addition, he has included two booklets worth of historical background information on the 1903 WIZARD OF OZ production, its stars, the individual musical numbers, and lyrics for the songs included on the CDs. (Lavishly illustrated with rare old black and white photos and artwork, these booklets, and the information they contain, are themselves worth the price of the set!) Several bonus CD tracks are included that offer rare recordings by Montgomery & Stone (the original Tin Woodsman and Scarecrow) and Bessie Wynn, who was also in the 1903 cast. Not just for dedicated Oz fans, this set is a "must have" for anyone interested in the history of American musical theater and American popular culture of the early 1900's.

5 out of 5 stars Long-Forgotten Broadway Hit Gets First Rate Revival.......2003-09-17

One hundred and three years ago, author L. Frank Baum published the best-selling children's book of the 20th century, THE WIZARD OF OZ. Although the book was adapted several times as plays, silent motion pictures, animated cartoons, and radio shows in the next few decades, it is the 1939 MGM film that most people think of as THE WIZARD OF OZ. The success and popularity of that film completely eclipsed the memories of previous incarnations and even the book itself in popular culture. However, prior to the film's release, there was a successful stage version which premiered on Broadway in 1903 and delighted audiences for many years, making stars of Fred Stone and David Montgomery, the original Scarecrow and Tinman. As with the MGM film, chilren who saw THE WIZARD OF OZ on stage carried fond memories of the production into adulthood. Ray Bolger was so impressed with the Fred Stone's Scarecrow, that he remembered it vividly as an adult and based his own protrayal of the character in the movie on Mr. Stone's stage version.

Unfortunately, time and Judy Garland have pushed the once popular Broadway Smash into history. It has been all but forgotten...until now.

As the show moved from theater to theater and casts changed, so did the songs. Many of these were recorded on the primative equipment of the day: Wax cylinders, 78-RPM records, piano rolls, and music Boxes, and surprisingly many of these still exist. Now, thanks to those hard-working gents at HUNGRY TIGER PRESS, you can own these historic recordings on this awesome 2-CD set. THE WIZARD OF OZ: Vintage Recordings From The 1903 Broadway Musical contains over 145 minutes of terrific early 20th century music. You won't find "Over the Rainbow" or "Ding! Dong! The Witch Is Dead!" here. Instead, this WIZARD OF OZ contains tracks like "Budweiser's a Friend of Mine", "Sammy", "Hurrah for Baffin's Bay", and "Rejoice! The Wizard is No Longer King", each one a portal over the rainbow to the Broadway stage of a century ago.

Obviously the play was quite different in plot from the movie--Dorothy travelled to Oz with her cow Imogene instead of Toto, for starters--, but the songs represent the style of popular music of 100 years ago and are collected here in a beautiful compilation. The set contains two booklets of liner notes which contain credits, lyrics, a written history of the production, and are extensively illustrated with photos and illustrations. Although the sound quality of the source material is not always up to today's standards, the songs are presented in the best versions possible, and the music is highly enjoyable. With 60 tracks and the wealth of information contained here, both written and photographic, this 2-CD set is good value for the money. A must-have for all collectors of WIZARD OF OZ memorabilia, an insightful look at popular music and Broadway history from a century ago, a glimpse into ethnic and racial stereotypes that were accepted at the time, and a curiosity for fans of the 1939 film, this set is big on appeal. Kudos to the Hungry Tiger Press for rescuing this treasure trove of musical history from obscurity!

5 out of 5 stars Silva Screen brings a decade of music from Wiseman.......2003-01-30

My first encounter with the music of Debbie Wiseman was her score from "Lighthouse" (2000), brilliant director Simon Hunter starring James Purefoy and Rachel Shelley...about a group of convicts in transit cast ashore, who are stalked by a vicious serial killer...the composer shares a flourishing propulsive pulse-racing counterpoints that keep the audience on the edge the entire film, great stuff. Very different from her genteel offerings for "Wilde", "Tom & Viv" and "Haunted"...our composer seems to wear many hats for her films, gotta love it.

Debbie's hard-working talent seems to have paid off. Having read much about the composer after "Lighthouse", her music is there to underscore the emotion of the film and allow room for the actors to speak their lines. Many cues require something less dramatic during a scene, you must remember the film comes first and not the music. Her classical training lends to shades of elegance that at any moment can burst with passion. Passages within melodies seem to blends so well, her scores can stand on their own two feet without the films storyline. She achieves her goal and then some, a marvel in these times and for someone quite so young.

Silva Screen presents "Something Here: Film & TV Music of Debbie Wiseman", thirteen tracks and over an hour of some of the most beautiful and haunting film music to come our way in a long time. Wiseman has written the music for over 55 television and 3 feature films. These are but a few, plus the world premiere recording of "THE UGLY DUCKLING", narrated by Nigel Havers and the timeless tale from Hans Christian Andersen. Wiseman paints a picture with her music on a canvas of sweeping innocence as the listener soaks up each morsel.

Some magnificent stand outs are "WILDE", exceptionally passionate and luxurious themes transcend with the uncanny ability to bring you into each cue ~ another is "HAUNTED", opening is so suspensefull, leaving you in a state of what's next...romance transcends with strings and counter melodies as the brass answers the call. Harmonies sweeping within harmonies rise to the heavens, this is truly film scoring at its best.

So "film-score-buffs", there is another star on the horizon. As usual James Fitzpatrick (associated producer), Reynold da Silva and Ian Maclay (executive producers) and The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra have come through for all the lovers of film music. This collection spanning a decade of work from Debbie Wiseman, is a keeper.
