Andy's Ramble

Editorial Reviews

Product Description:
Andy Statman is one of his generation's most adventurous mandolinists, possessing a formidable technique that is always in the service of a gifted sense of musicality. His love for traditional bluegrass music, and especially the music of Bill Monroe, goes back at least as far as 1965, when, at the tender age of 15, he began taking mandolin lessons from David Grisman. This album draws from bluegrass traditions and finds Statman leading a top-flight ensemble (including fiddlers Vassar Clements and Kenny Kosek, and banjoist Tony Trischka) on a musically eclectic journey that takes its inspiration from the music of Monroe -- Statman's guiding light. Four of the inspired participants in this project -- Statman, Kenny Kosek, Tony Trischka and Roger Mason -- have worked together since the Country Cooking/Breakfast Special days of the early 1970s.

5 out of 5 stars Wizardy on the Mandolin!.......2007-01-10

For those who love Bluegrass mandolin, this is a CD for you.

Andy Statman's mandolin combines an intensity of melody with an urgency of rhythm, creating a new sound that is both traditional and contemporary.

Just the fact that the late great Vassar Clements (fiddle) and Tony Trischka (banjo) join him shows that Andy Statman has a real winner here.

Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars A Real Gem.......2001-08-01

Andy Statman is one of the truly unique acoustic misicians to emerge out of the 70's bluegrass revival, and he has never really gotten his due. Perhaps because a lesser talented mandolinist [who will remain unnamed]was receiving so much exposure, Statman's work never got the attention it truly deserved. In addition to stellar work on the projects of virtually every big-name acoustic musician, he did a few solo projects in the bluegrass vein before apparently devoting himself to Klezmer music. This is the best of the bunch. Bluegrass tinted with jazz, klezmer and who knows what else. Finally this stands out from similar projects in that each of the tunes (all original) is a polished gem. Not one is just an excuse for extended soloing, and each has its own special charm.
