Amazon.com essential recording

Kurt Weill harbored ambitions to compose the great American opera in the public, populist forum of Broadway, much as Gershwin did with Porgy and Bess. He did so in the 1947 Street Scene, which is a three-hour panorama of working-class American life revolving around a woman in an abusive marriage who is murdered for seeking comfort elsewhere. Weill never demonstrated a more remarkable fluency in a range of popular music style, but the piece's somewhat dated (and deliberate) sense of dramaturgy is apparent in this single disc of excerpts, performed in the comparatively reserved Broadway style of the 1940s. Though Langston Hughes's lyrics capture the Edward Hopperesque loneliness of those times, they can also be cloyingly bald. Weill's combination of pop-music manner and Puccinian operatic grandeur has since been more cohesively negotiated. However, excerpts this extensive would have been possible only in the dawn of the LP era, with cast members Anne Jeffreys, Polyna Stoska, and Brian Sullivan showing how this piece's journey started. --David Patrick Stearns

4 out of 5 stars Street Scene: An American Musical/Opera.......2006-08-16

I list this in both my Musicals and Opera.. I read a review , not of this production,, but of an operatic one , comparing it to "louise".. I'm amazed at how fast Weill adapted to the american idiom..I thinks his best work was with Brecht and Ira Gershwin.. that being said.. this is a good recording encouraging me to see,, if I can find one, a production..
Anne Jefferies,, I believe was in a revival of kismet and is georgeous..

5 out of 5 stars A New concept of collaboration.......2000-05-18

Larry Warren in his book :"Anna Sokolow The Rebellious Spirit" writes: "In "Oklahoma!" and "On the town",Agnes de Mille and Jerome Robbins had pioneered in the use of dance to further the plot of a musical, but their language was based on a ballet vocabulary. In Street Scene Anna proved that Social-dance forms have an inherent dramatic powers when they are artfully used as an expression of the society that created them. Ten years later Robbins used his genius to bring this concept to its fullest expression on Broadway in West Side Story".

4 out of 5 stars Historic Ragtime.......2001-03-31

Charles Thompson was a contemporary of Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson, and was one of the leading figues of the second generation of St. Louis ragtime pianists.

This album, made up of live recordings from the early 1960s, finds Thompson in reasonable form, playing some of his best known pieces plus a few standards. His powers had declined a little from his 1948-49 American Music recordings, but he was still able to play in an entertaining fashion. Many of the performances are rather short, but these are historic recordings by a little known but important figue in ragtime.

Delmark is to be commended for this release: let's hope they re-issue the rest of the Euphonic back catalogue. Anyone interested in ragtime and early jazz should consider buying this CD.

5 out of 5 stars A great re-issue worthy of this great singing legend........2003-05-23

It was always my dream to have Kay Thompson's early Brunswick and Victor recordings in good sound quality. Now it finally materialized in this magnificent re-issue produced by great record producer Ted Ono and his masterful sound engineer Doug Pomeroy, who's also responsible for some incredible Mosaic sets. The remaining of the CD consists of Thompson's wonderfully entertaining performances from radio shows and film soundtrack, and the sound quality once again is superb. One of the most exiting and entertaining CDs I purchased in the recent years.

5 out of 5 stars Thompson Street by Brady Seals.......2007-05-12

Brady Seals is one very talented artist. He's my daughter's favorite and I buy whatever I can find with his music on it. I buy for her and myself. This album shows his solo talent. It's very good!

4 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2005-08-12

I purchased this album after hearing the new Hot Apple Pie CD. Brady has an awesome voice and a way of making you believe in what he's singing. If you like Little Texas you will like this album. It's not country, so if that is what you are looking for you should try Hot Apple Pie (Brady's new band). If you just like the pure sound of his voice you will love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Brady's Best.......2003-03-09

This CD takes me back to the 70s when I discovered a love for music. The title track is funky fresh and sexy. Very danceable. "Breakin' Down" could be a single. It rocks! A co-write with Rodney Crowell, "Things Have Gotta Change" reflects Petty influences. Also written with Crowell, "Soon" has a beautiful lyric of hope. "Free Love" is a stew of Southern Rock, country and blues. "Let Me Be Your Man" is a beautiful ballad of a humble love. Check out the live strings. "10, 9, 8..." should have been on "The Lord of The Rings" sound track. Sounds like it came from Middle Earth. "All I Want" is a party. "That's How It Goes" and "Our Last Goodbye" (co-written with Andy Sturmer of Jelly Fish) are reminiscent of Todd Rundgren. This CD is a surprising little gem. Great party music or grooving in your car.

5 out of 5 stars Although a departure; a great cd........2003-03-02

I'll admit that this cd was nothing like what I was expecting; but it was still a good cd. This cd is a complete departure from LT or his two previous solo cds; instead of the new country sound he's known for this cd definitely leaned more toward the rock side of the spectrum. When I first put the cd in my cd player; my first thought was "What the he**?" but now it's the only cd I listen to. If you're looking solely for the Little Texas or previous Brady Seals sound; you won't find it on this cd but you will find some great music.

1 out of 5 stars WHAT THE ????.......2003-02-26

If you are looking for that Little Texas or his first two solo album sounds, you WILL NOT get that here, this is probably one of the biggest departures from a genre of music I have ever heard, the music has no country in it, and that is what this singer is known for. I would personally give it a Beatles/Paul McCartney meets Sheryl Crow sound, take note, these are great artists, my biggest disappointment, was I thought his old stuff solo and L.T. was great stuff, fun country party stuff, this however, makes one wonder, what in the world has happened to Brady , where did the fun music guy go. I bought the CD this morning and sorry to say, I returned it 4 hours later for a local store credit. Not what I thought I was getting.

    Album Description

“Time To Go”, Russell's third CD release to date, continues to explore his trademark `ethereal Americana' style. Woody Russell offers 12 captivating new songs that do justice to the craft of songwriting. Clearly becoming more comfortable with his diverse musical background, the songs on this recording move smoothly from rockin' Delta slide guitar riffs and gritty vocals to somber storytelling ballads. His custom “resolectric” guitar conjures up a wicked banjo-type sound on several tracks that is strangely powerful and absolutely unique to this release. The entire performance from his band is stunning and well produced, with lush vocal harmonies and haunting instrumental textures throughout. Continued respect for earlier American roots music, such as the blues and traditional country, is always present in his songs. A slight lean toward an “alt-country” sound is present on many of the tracks and there are hints of some of his more obvious influences throughout the album. Richard Thompson, Bruce Cockburn, Van Morrison, and even Tom Waits are reflected in some slight way. “I welcome their influence on my songwriting. I can't go wrong by paying close attention to the work of artists that I consider to be absolutely masterful songwriters and musicians. It helps my own songs continue to grow. It's obviously best to study the source of great songs if you want to write great songs. The creative sources that I draw from have always run deeper than current trends and, as of yet, withstood the test of time. I want my songs to hold their magic for my listeners for years, not just chartable success. Not that a well crafted pop hit is any less of a great song than a classic album cut, but there is always room for songs that go a little farther than the current hit single dictates. Audiences are also interested in something with a little more depth. Something that takes a couple of listens to absorb. Hopefully, my songs can help satisfy that desire.” Standout tracks begin with the opening song, Not Lay Down And Die. Funky, bone-slide guitar picking sets the CD in motion with a hook that resonates with the spirit of a Delta blues - “I'm still here and I'm gonna testify / That I've been run ragged / But I will not lay down and die.” Star Girl follows with its slick, bluesy groove and slightly estranged character portrayal, perhaps a nod to early Steely Dan. Been So Good To Me.com, is absolute tongue-in-cheek fun in pure Woody Russell style that takes shots at “dot-com” types. Through stinging Irish fiddle influenced guitar riffs the lyric states wryly that - “The dot com millionaires advise that this microbrew's great, man / This town's been so good to me / Get me the hell out of here, Honey.” The title track, Time To Go, finds Russell and his listeners in a laid back mood, cruising down a road of departure from the past; perhaps with Van Morrison on the radio - “I've got friends who are happy to stay where they've been /God bless their souls / But the lines on my face suggest that I step up the pace / So it's on with the show / It's time to go.” The subtle shuffle of You've Got Me Wrong, frankly tells about Russell's encounter with everyone who has ever offered, or rather, insisted that their uneducated opinion be heard regarding his work. With wry humor he states - “So that's your opinion / A slim chance you're right / Don't push it on me / I don't need it tonight.” Reflective, and at times bittersweet and witty, this collection of songs on `Time To Go' delivers an unquestionable feeling that Woody Russell sings with sincerity about what he sees and feels in the current world around him, and the future that lies ahead.

5 out of 5 stars Wonders for today's music scene!.......2002-06-23

As I understand from reading Woody's bio he is a new addition to Austin, having arrived recently from Seattle (where I'm SURE he was under appreciated!) After listening to MP3's here and on his website, I bought this disc and have been playing it for anyone who will listen. The muscianship is amazing and his lyrics and storytelling abilities are some of the best. This music is made for the listener who demands more than repetitive hooks, drum loops and the standard 3-chord mediocrity. From the opening tune "Not Lay Down and Die" which seems to depict the musician's struggle to be heard and on to later tunes about society, love, emotional and psychological journeys WR never lets the listener down!! Each song is a brilliant composition of visual imagery and sonic magic. They are just the kind of thing you want to tap along with while driving down the freeway or drinking beer on the deck. CHECK THIS OUT!!! ...Can't wait to see him live!

5 out of 5 stars "Time to Go" makes you want to stay and listen over and over.......2002-05-12

3 CDs - 3 home runs! "Time to Go" is Woody Russell's third release and is songwriting at it's best. Intriguing lyrics paired with crisp guitar playing makes for deep-rooted emotional and sometimes whimsical songs that everyone can relate to. Woody Russell magically finds a way to touch every listener deep with at least one of his songs. The sound he has created is truly his own. Blues, country, jazz, rock, range; all combine to form his Ethereal Americana style. All styles describe that which is Woody Russell though not one without the other. Refreshing and new can also be used. Personally - CD #4 can't come soon enough. Enjoy "Time to Go", discover his earlier works and fall in love with music all over again.

5 out of 5 stars An artist on the verge of being discovered........2002-03-08

This is truly a wonderful piece of work by Woody Russell. If you love music which is truly timeless, you should own this CD. This artist has stayed true to his roots and not sold out for commercial success, which is a good thing for the true music lover. Time To Go blends tight guitar playing with wonderful story telling to create a gem worthy of listening to over and over. Russell envokes emotion from his guitar, and you will feel every note. Edgy at times (Been So Good to Me.com), soul searching at others (Gone), but always passionate. My favorite song is the one I'm listening to at the time. Hopefully, we will not have to wait 3 more years before being blessed with another album from Woody Russell.

5 out of 5 stars Woody keeps getting better and better.......2002-02-27

This new CD is my favorite of Russ's three releases. The 12 cuts are each wonderfully written and tell stories ranging from a "jab" at the dot.coms (Been So Good To Me.com) to the hauntingly beautiful story of a man surprised to find the love of his life (The Last Thing I Expected). From the opening note of the first cut, to the last note of the final song is is obvious that this CD has been a true labor of love for Russ. His talent and dedication to his craft come through in the songs, all of which he wrote, recorded and mixed. His band backs him up beautifully, adding their unique vocal performances and musical harmony. Those of us who are lucky enough to hear Woody Russell play live are thrilled by this return to his roots. He should always play his own material, as it is a true joy to listen to.
