5 out of 5 stars "Must Have!".......2006-02-24

This is a must have for any Wilburn Brothers or true country music fan. It's got some of their very best songs. If you like this one, check out their others: "Stars of the Grand Ole Opry", "Retrospective", "Greatest Hits" and "The Wonderful Wilburn Brothers". You can't go wrong with any of them!

4 out of 5 stars Pure entertainment.......2006-01-28

I'm not a real fan of the Wilburn Brothers, I happen to like the song "Trouble's Back In Town", a song I remember from my childhood. Apparently, it's their biggest hit, with a cute "uh-oh" hook from the Anita Kerr Singers.
But, it's a decent greatest hits package, from early mono tracks to stereo production extravaganzas. Pure honky-tonk fun. The boys were pros and it shows on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Male Duet in Country Music History .......2005-02-27

Forget Brooks and Dunn (please!), the Wilburn Brothers are hands down the greatest male duet country music ever saw. Their harmonies are awesome, and no this is not a case like the Judds where one sings and one is barely audiable, both Teddy and Doyle come through loud and clear and sing their hearts out in these great hits spanning their twenty year career with Decca Records. My favorites are "Trouble's Back in Town", "Somebody's Back in Town", "It's Another World", and their last hit, "Arkansas". The Wilburns sadly faded from the charts in the early 70's although they were both barely 40, same age range as George Jones, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson. One suspects industry politics has something to do with it but at least we had 20 years of country classics from the guys. Both are gone now, but their music is as fine as ever.

5 out of 5 stars THE WILBURN BROTHERS.......2005-02-27

NOT ENOUGH OF THEIR SONGS AND NONE OF THEIR ORIGINAL DECCA ALBUMS ARE ON CD. THE BEST OF COUNTRY IS OVERLOOKED.

5 out of 5 stars A whole lotta music.......2006-02-12

There's a whole lot of music here, and sung with the perfection that only the Wilburn Brothers could provide. Many folks remember the early Wilburn Brother's Television show, which introduced us all to Loretta Lynn, but not even their praiseworthy TV effort can compare to their recording career. Both started out with none other than Webb Pierce, and from there, their careers took off. These guys are easily in the same league as the Louvin's or the DelMore Bros, so this is one CD you need to grab. A must have for the true Country Music Lover

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits.......2006-01-08

I agree - bring on more reissues of this wonderful duo! I'm ready to buy and I bet others are too!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific, consistent country hitmakers.......2006-01-03

It's astonishing that a duo that had thirty hit singles and recorded dozens of LPs for Decca are so thinly represented in the CD reissue market. Varese expands upon the budget best-ofs (and matches Edsel's out-of-print import disc) with an eighteen track helping of the duo's charting sides, stretching from their first solo success (1955's "I Wanna, Wanna, Wanna") through 1967's "Goody, Goody, Goody." Although this omits earlier work backing Webb Pierce ("Sparkling Brown Eyes") and their last few top-40 entries ("The Sun's Gonna Shine" from 1969 and "Little Johnny From Down the Street" from 1970), it captures the core of their hits for Decca, including their early hard-country sides, their dip into countrypolitan (1962's excellent "Trouble's Back in Town" and "The Sound of Your Footsteps," both featuring The Anita Kerr Singers), and their return to the hard-country sounds that had brung them to the party in the first place.

The Wilburn's were long on music industry experience, both as performers and as executives. Their performing career began with a family singing act in the late '30s, continued as a foursome with their two older brothers, and transformed into a duo by the early '50s. They performed on radio, joined the Louisiana Hayride and the Opry, all the time maintaining a recording career, running a publishing company and starting up a successful talent agency. Their harmonies are apiece with the Delmores, Louvins and Everlys, and while the Wilburn's were country to the core, there's also a good hint of pop in their singing. Many of their best sides have a happiness-and-heartache feel similar to Buck Owens' mid-60s releases. Their 1961 cover of Don Gibson's "Blue Blue Day" is a perfect example - bouncing along on a proto-rock 'n' roll guitar line as the brothers voices intertwine to sing of lost love.

Surprisingly, for all their consistency on the charts, they never hit #1, but they were voted duet of the year by the Music City News in 1967, and their matching stage outfits and personalized guitars (with "WILBURN BROS" inlayed into the necks and their first names inscribed on the pick guards) speak to the showmanship of their live performances. The Wilburn Brothers' belong in the collection of anyone who enjoys twangy country with tight brotherly harmonies. Varese's collection is a great single disc overview of their essential hits -- though given the volume of the duo's output, this is far from a complete picture of their recording career. In addition to a several lower-charting hits (1956's "You're Not Playing Love", 1959's "The Knoxville Girl," 1960's "All My Heartaches," 1964's "Hangin' Around," 1965's "I Had One Too Many"), there are dozens of albums left unanthologized or reissued. Bear Family, where are you? [©2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

3 out of 5 stars Decent remakes .......2006-04-30

At the time this CD was issued (1999) there was no domestically available CD of their classic Decca material (although there was an excellent collection, TROUBLE'S BACK IN TOWN - THE HITS OF THE WILBURN BROTHERS, on the British EDSEL label), so this CD of late 1970s recording filled a definite need. Not a hits collection, it does cover four of their hits plus some other songs. While lacking the sparkle of the Decca recordings these are good journeyman recordings. Recordings include:

I Know A Goodbye When I See One (not a charted hit)
If I Can't Have All Of You (not a charted hit)
I've Never Outgrown My Move For You (not a charted hit)
    Hands (not a charted hit)
    Roll Muddy River (#4 - 1963)
Making Plans (not a charted hit)
    Trouble's Back In Town (#4 - 1962)
    Knoxville Girl (#18 - 1959)
What I Had With You (not a charted hit)
I'm Gonna Tie One On Tonight (#19 -1965)

If you don't have either the Edsel disc referenced above or 2005's GREATEST HITS released domestically by Varese Sarabande - get one of them first. This CD would make a good second acquisition

    5 out of 5 stars "My Favorite".......2006-02-24

I have to admit that this is my favorite Wilburn Brothers CD. Some of their classics plus a few extras recorded in 1981 just prior to the untimely death of Doyle Wilburn. It's some of their best work and shows why they lasted so long.

Singer Patty Loveless worked with Teddy Wilburn to pick out the songs on this MCA issue of some of the Wilburn Brothers best work throughout the years. You can't go wrong with any of the Wilburns CD's - and this is just another example of why they had such a long and successful career

4 out of 5 stars Best of their pre-Decca material .......2006-04-30

These recordings come from the Wilburn Brothers early days, when they were featured on the Louisiana Hayride and before they signed with Decca. None of these songs were national hits although some of them were regional successes and some of them such as "Goose Pimples" received considerably airplay over the years. It should be noted that Billboard's charts only charted 10 to 15 songs during this period. Sound quality is okay, nothing outstanding but certainly listenable.

The Wilburn Brothers hit days began through their association with Webb Pierce and there first hit, the #4 "Sparkling Brown Eyes" was a duet with Webb Pierce. After that good things began to happen for them.

As I said before, none of these songs were big hits but they as worth being heard. Some of the songs, such as Tennessee Ernie Ford's "Anticipation Blue's and Hank Williams' "Long Gone Lonesome Blues", were covers of other's hits. Songs include:

    Heart Please Be Still
    Are You Lonely Too?
    Way Down Under Blues
    Put Me In Your Pocket
    Down In Dixie
    Bugle Call From Heaven
    Goose Pimples
    Give A Little Take
    Anticipation Blues
    Because You Care
    The Long Gone Lonesome Blues
Will You Be Ready (To Wear A Golden Crown)

    I'd rate this 3.5 stars
