The personal and the universal mix in the songs of Judith Edelman like arrivals and departures at an airport. The New York City-born singer/songwriter opens her second album with the title track, a guarded meditation on the complexities of love ("I used to spin around myself, I would spin/Now I'm revolving around him"). Soon enough, however, she's exploring the perspectives of children awaiting their murderous father's return from prison ("Coming Home"), a military pilot having nightmares about a past bombing target ("Midnight on the Water"), and a housewife whose life is so grim she idolizes librarians ("Library Card"). Frisky new-grass arrangements propel the tunes, bracing Edelman's lissome vocals and canny lyrics. Only Sun is the work of an artist just beginning to harness her abundant talents. --Steven Stolder

Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20
Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes
What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.
C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.
Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.
This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

Thank fans for this completist's dream: they petitioned the remaining members of the Sublime, a decade after Bradley Nowell's death by misadventure, to disgorge this collection of rarities, outtakes, and unreleased material. While a little overwhelming in its sheer volume, it deftly illustrates what a compelling shape-shifter Nowell was, even during his most discombobulated and boozy moments. Those unvarnished moments are captured here--taken from backstage parties, live radio shows, and their very first demos--along with some of the bands' more formed moments, whether sharing a stage with Gwen Stefani or being remixed by Long Beach crony Snoop Dogg before he became Top Dogg. Whether channeling the acerbic and fearless sound of Bad Brains (H.R. appears here on a cover of his "Shame in Dem Game"), duplicating the vocal idiosyncrasies and guitar angst of Jimi Hendrix on a song like "Voodoo (Part 2)," or inhabiting the righteous ire of "Catch a Fire" Bob Marley, this collection is a sonic history of a band in the process of becoming one the more seminal purveyors of ska punk, and multiplatinum artists as a result. An evolutionary history, really, this exhaustive collection includes some rather revelatory film footage, including an impish MTV interview prior to their Warped Tour appearance and another one conducted in tandem with Washington, D.C., hardcore avatars Minor Threat. --Jaan UhelszkiCustomer Reviews:

While countless fans flock to see soprano Renee Fleming's performances of the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro because she's got the voice and the dramatic ability to handle such meaty roles, the versatile singer throws her fans a curveball on Haunted Heart, singing popular standards and ballads as well as a few altered classical pieces. In her liner notes, Fleming calls this album a "look back at the road not taken" -- she played a weekly gig in a jazz club while in school. Nonetheless, her feel for the material here is undeniable. Interestingly, she drops her voice a full octave from her usual tessitura, and the change reveals a robust gospel-oriented approach filled with dramatic breaths and moans. The lyrical Fred Hersch (piano) and the idiosyncratic Bill Frisell (guitar) provide support, and both are adventurous jazz players who create subtle and uniquely haunting backdrops. It adds up to an interesting cross-section of ideas well carried off by the generous talents of all involved. --Tad Hendrickson

Customer Reviews:
Sublime and ridiculous.......2007-06-13
The ridiculous: Fleming ended the majority of most phrases in most of the songs with a guttural of some sort which for me becomes irritating to the point of distraction. These punctuations are mostly quite awful: really tasteless, clumsy, and overused big time and I'm amazed at how this ever got released. Without these ersatz testifyin' noises this CD would be stunning.
So, if you have the ability and inclination to edit out this garbage from your perception as you listen I think you'll be glad you experienced these artists at work together. (Unfortunately I'm not up to it).
Eeeeeeeeeeewwwwwww.......2007-06-06
Better than I thought it would be.......2007-04-10
I think this is the most artistically successful recording of Pop/Jazz by a classical singer. I enjoyed it even better than the Anna Sophie Von Otter'/ Elvis Costello CD.
The perspective I am coming from is that of a classical singer who started out as a pop singer/songwriter. I perform and teach cross-genre but love a world class instrument such as Flemming's
I wanted to get the perspective of a friend who used to sing jingles and is also a trained singer but is usually critical of any attempts that opera singers make at crossing -over.
My friend is very familiar with Flemming's voice, but did not recognise it in this context when I played the CD for her. Her reaction was very complimentary, although she did comment that the diction was a bit strange.
She then played it for her brother a well known jazz singer and arranger who had a somewhat negative reaction. He found the singing to be overly dark and round. He prefers a cleaner more 'spoken' approach to this style of singing. I understand this perspective and therefore personally prefer Ella to Sarah as well, but let's not get too picky. Obviously, Rene Flemming is of the Sarah Vaghan School of jazz singing, which is not too shabby.
I will continue to enjoy this CD and will wait for another opera diva to top this one. But, somehow I think the next really good CD of Pop/ jazz from an opera star will also come from Rene.
To those who have been unreasonably mean and negative towards her, I can only say you are not fit to polish her shoes!
Brava Renee.......2007-04-09
I hope Renee keeps recording whatever catches her fancy because I'll certainly always listen.
Art is always new. .......2007-03-10
I welcome Renee's elan demonstrated with her recent recordings, Love sublime with Brad Mehldau, and Haunted Heart with Fred Hersch and Bill Frissell. Bravery, fun, and talent combined by artists and for people who are listening. Hearing long time favorites Mehldau, Hersch, and Frissell is all the more sublime.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-09
The founder of English hymnody is Isaac Watts (1674-1748), whose work in reforming congregational song texts culminated in the publication of his 'Hymns and Spiritual Songs' in 1707. Watts' collection was as complete and comprehensive a set of hymns as had ever been proposed for English worship and it raised the profile of the hymn sufficiently to overcome the prevailing psalmody. The great flowering period of English hymnody began with the work of the Methodist hymn-writers John Wesley (1703-1791) and his brother Charles (1707-1788). The Wesleys gave great prominence to hymns within their Methodist worship and published many books.
The modern hymn book is a collection of hymns drawn from various times and places. This most accomplished recording by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir presents 16 well-loved hymns from 'The New English Hymnal'. A great number of the hymns, which originate from many different eras and traditions, are given an extra musical dimension by John Scott's original descants and thrilling brass arrangements.
Over the years, I have found myself purchasing mostly the recordings of English choirs. They seem to have incredible vocal skills, perfectly executed phrases, flawless diction and some unidentifiable ingredient that makes them very appealing to hear. Of course, I personally enjoy the all male choirs sound; boy sopranos and male altos make the difference. This is a very appealing group of hymns!!!!!

Time Life is proud to present a complete and unique edition of Johnny Cash's Sun recordings. Johnny came to Sun in 1955 with a sound that he neither altered nor bettered. During his three years there he wrote and recorded many of his best-known songs, songs like "I Walk The Line" and "Folsom Prison Blues", which he would sing for the remainder of his long, impressive career. What you'll find on Johnny Cash: The Complete Sun Recordings 1955-58 is one version of every song that Johnny Cash recorded at Sun, usually in the least dubbed form available. A unique celebration of the beginning of one of the great careers in American music!Customer Reviews:

Perfect Collection Without Overdubs.......2006-03-04
"After Johnny left Sun, many of these recordings were overdubbed in different ways. Choruses, additional instruments, echo, and applause were added at various times. However, as Johnny proved during his last years, nothing beats the sound of Johnny Cash with just the simplest of backings. And so, for this collection, we have removed virtually all the overdubs, allowing you to hear the Sun recordings exactly as they were first captured."

Donovan Leitch, at his most memorable, reflected and connected the folky beginnings of Bob Dylan with the pop instincts of the Beatles, and counted both among his friends. The singer-songwriter's airy voice and whimsical songs were malleable enough to encompass wildly diverse styles, including the sparse protest-folk of "Universal Soldier," the smoky cabaret jazz of "Sunny Goodge Street," and the harder psychedelia of "Hurdy Gurdy Man," as well as the easygoing sunshine sound of "Mellow Yellow" and the plush, orchestral "Lalena." Add some whimsical fairy tales, darker blues, and bouncy Caribbean rhythms, and you have an artist whose enormous swath is difficult to absorb, let alone anthologize. This three-CD-plus-one-DVD set covers Donovan's work from 1964 to 2004 and is the most ambitious attempt yet to organize his extensive career. It includes 60 tracks, 15 of them previously unreleased or hard to find (many of these live and acoustic). The remastered sound is so clear it often seems Donovan is whispering into your ear. Try for the Sun is geared toward the hardcore fan, as those just wanting a taste can make do with Donovan's Greatest Hits or Troubadour: The Definitive Collection, 1964-1976. But for those with the time, interest, and patience, this nearly four-hour set, with its sumptuous packaging, extensive liner notes, and rare video footage, is a journey of its own that presents the most complete portrait available of this enigmatic and legendary artist. --Hal Horowitz

The Best So Far.......2006-05-30
A MASTER RE-MASTERED.......2006-04-17
In terms of the past, though, this is an exceedingly well assembled collection. There are plenty of alternate takes and live versions of familiar parts of the catalog, but the re-mastering is a wonder to hear. That very particular character of early-ish analog recording, seemingly eccentric decisions about the stereo mix, early amplification and electric instrument design which many now strive to recreate in the digital domain is on display in remarkable detail and feel on every track. The presence, especially voice, is often startling in detail and power.
And in addition to demonstrating Donovan's talent, this collection does us the important service of demonstrating that not every example of popular musical forms are intrinsically transient and, as is so important to maintaining sales today, ultimately and rapidly disposable. Certainly much of the music here, and many of the ideas within and behind it, deserve and seem to be achieving sustained interest and longevity.
This is a great set, a perfect complement for his recent book, "The Hurdy Gurdy Man" and the equally recent and excellent EMI remasters of his early lps. You'll even get a sampling from "Sutras" which, it's hard to believe, somehow finds itself out of print...
More than expected.......2006-03-26
Yummmy purple velvet.......2006-03-17
Bound to be a sudden craze.......2006-01-24
Still, although there is a lot of great stuff here, I don't really know how to peg my review here...I don't really see Donovan as an essential artist at all, merely an extremely pleasurable one to listen to...And there is a ton of beautiful, great stuff here..."Young Girl Blues", "Catch the Wind", "Atlantis" and "Sunshine Superman"... the guy has a gift with a melody, that's indisputable...
People always quibble about comps, because it's virtually impossible not to leave something off some dweeb thinks is important, but having said that -where's "Cosmic Wheels"? Extremely dorky, hippy dippy, but still...catchy, fun...
Overall though, this is nicely done. Donovan, what a font of positive energy and just, for lack of a better phrase, melodic goodness...
