great artist poor sound.......2007-05-12
to begin, the audio was bad there was a lack of bass and it didn't have that live feel to it. It should have been remastered, with the technology available today, it would have been a five star recording.
BB and Bobby, blues at it's best.......2006-11-05
BB King, iconic blues man, and Bland live - it's a classic must have.
Blues, blues, blues.......2006-08-26
What can I say, Bobby Blue Bland and BB King. messin' around on stage. A great interplay of two great bluesmen just having fun.
Not the all time best of either one, but absolutely worth the price of admission
two alltime greats are better than one.......2006-08-05
Is there anything better than B.B. King? Only when he's with Bobby "Blue" Bland. Great.
An Intimate Evening With The King... Mr. B.B. King.......2006-03-20
If you enjoy the live blues scene, you'll love this piece. You can almost feel the ambiance of a dimly lit, smokey blues club. Poor yourself a mellow bourbon, light up a fine cigar and enoy a laid back evening with the legendary blues of Mr. B.B. King & Bobby Blue Bland. The bond of these two long time friends is obvious in their free-flowing dialog and makes for a comfortable evening of easy listening. This release has been somewhat overlooked throughout the years..... share it with your friends.

The Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-11-04
Nelson Eddy's flawless singing and diction, with a modern orchestral accompaniment, make The Artistry of Nelson Eddy a romantic, sophisticated musical experience.
Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-08-22
Contemporary music which is sung well but voice not as expected of Nelson Eddy. The true baritone of his voice missing. This may be the recording but CD received in good condition.
A Nelson Eddy Tour de Force: Magnificence here on earth.......2006-03-17
I have most of the movies of Nelson Eddy. Together with Jeanette MacDonald, this team produced some of the most romantic movie-operattas ever made. But the sound quality of those movies pale in comparison to the magnificence of this production.
Nelson Eddy has never sounded better, aided (1994) by more modern recording techniques, the quality here (even with a disclaimer) is beyond belief. He has got to be one of the premier baritones of all time. Singing Popular tunes adapted from classical themes, he may be without peer. I have a CD of the young Sinatra singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms" to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. He is not in the same universe with Eddy, whose crisp diction, timbre, fullness, perfect pitch, and passion ~ YES! PASSION! ~ must be heard (hopefully on on quality audio) to be fully appreciated. This is AWESOME. Maybe the best it gets here on earth. This is a wholly magnificent CD if you appreciate really good music, a fantastic baritone, and have a romantic bone in your body. I am astounded. Until today, I had no idea that Nelson Eddy was this good. This CD proves he was.
For those who are already fans of N.E. only........2003-12-22
Nelson Eddy made these recordings when he was about 60 years old and it shows. He retained an excellent voice for a very long time, allowing him to perform successfully until the day he died. However, this particular recording seems to emphasize vocal decline, in terms of control and range. The problem may be that the songs presented here are mostly VERY GREAT classical orchestral pieces, to which are sung pop lyrics. In my opinion, most (but not all) of the lyrics to these songs are not worthy of their music and are incongruous. The last number, "Alone Together", an excellent Schwartz/Dietz song (which seems out of place with Rachmaninov and Ravel,) is actually a duet with Nelson's partner, Gale Sherwood. It was recorded a couple of years later than the other songs on this album, and is given a bossa nova background that in this mix, practically drowns out the singers! As to the overall sound quality, there are some light snaps and pops as on a record, but the music is loud and clear. I do not mean to discourage Nelson Eddy fans from buying this album. I think you need this album. I own this album. Buy this album, and encourage the release of more albums and radio recordings by Nelson Eddy. What I do mean to say, is that "The Artistry of Nelson Eddy" is not the best introduction to the artistry of Nelson Eddy. His recordings from the 30's, 40's or even 50's are a better purchase for the beginner. Once you love Nelson Eddy, then pick up this album.
A Surefire Way To Turn A Bad Day Into A Good One!.......2003-04-12
The music on this CD is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. It proves that the music of Nelson Eddy is simply timeless. I have always loved his voice, but these arrangements bring out the very best of it. It is highly recommended.

Another great trip down the MFU memory lane.......2005-10-19
Volume 2 (comprised of 2 CDs) is another first rate compilation of the series' original music and not to be missed by U.N.C.L.E. fans. The liner notes are wonderful and add a lot to ones appreciation of the music.
My only problem is that THE CDs ARE COPY PROTECTED! Considerable work is needed to get the music onto your iPod, if you really want the music in your mp3 collection. This is a major hassle and a surprise, since the first set in the series was not copy protected.
The best of the three Double CDs ORIGINAL soundtrack release.......2005-07-12
Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.
Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.
And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.
Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.
This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.
Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.
So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.

Elaine Stritch is a legend and she knows it. And so she came up with a whole one-woman show about the best topic she could think of: her life in the theater. And what a trip it's been. From Ethel Merman to Noel Coward, Stritch has worked with some of the greatest names to grace the American stage, and she has anecdotes about all of them (most are included on this recording). In this show, she hits all the marks with the acuity of a seasoned pro who's seen it all and whose love for the theater remains undiluted. Stritch is not a traditionally pretty singer (those gravelly pipes!), but she absolutely knows how to give life to a song, extracting the last drop of meaning, dropping pauses for effect with deadly accuracy. Sondheim's "Ladies Who Lunch" and "Broadway Baby" will be hers forever, and a case could be made for the hilarious "Zip" (from Pal Joey) and the obscure, spectacularly politically incorrect "Civilization" (from the revue Angel in the Wings) as well. Fittingly, this two-CD set includes "I'm Still Here," which may well be Stritch's motto. If you're looking for a concise yet bewitching history of the musical, this is it. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
A National Treasure.......2007-07-05
This double CD is stuffed full of great songs and amazing stories. My favorite stories are of Elaine's date with Marlon Brando, what she thought some lyric are/meant, and her time in Compant. The total honesty that she brings it all together is touching and inspiring.
Very few people have the length or variety of a career that Elaine Stritch has had. I am sure that she has enough stories to do ten more shows.
If you love Broadway then you must buy this CD.
Stritch is superb.......2007-06-27
The only disappointment is that I missed the show live. This is a terrific honest performance by an actor who has a deep well of experience from which to draw. From her early childhood memories, through acting school, her loves, her struggles and more, Ms Stritch weaves a fascinating and completely enthralling story. Ultimately, she lives the songs, rather than just performs and this is what really marks her out.
I am so glad, she's still here!
Entertaining but grating on the ears.......2007-05-11
I've never been able to understand what is so great about Elaine Stritch's singing. It's simple: she can't sing. I've tried and tried to like her, and I do, as an actress, but NOT as a singer. Listening to these CDs, all I hear is a grouchy old lady voice with no vibrato, no range, and no ability to hold notes. If she were to try out for American Idol she would get cringes! I love her humor and honesty, and that's why I bought this, but the voice...ugh.
Great Broadway Review.......2007-04-11
I thoroughly enjoy this collection of stories from her experiences from a teenage girl in Michigan through her career, very funny, some sad and great entertainment.
Elaine Stritch at Liberty.......2007-01-19
Completely entertaining---a bit maudilin in places, but a must have for any Elaine Stritch fan.
Certainly worth the money!

Koto song concert. THE version of the song........2006-06-30
Koto song is one of the most haunting piece of music I have ever heard. It is ipnotic in its eternal beauty. It is unforgettable. If it was for this tune alone, this album is absolutly one to have. Absolutly and I mean it. But Koto song is not the only highlight of this concert. Rotterdam blues is a wonderful blues. And what about the two extraordinary long versions of Truth and Take five? Gerry Mulligan really shines here. His interplay with Desmond and Brubeck is something of the highest grade. In Take five the band take a long ride on the various modal scales, major and minor in 5/4 time. Really ipnotic this one too. It is a wonderful take five version and I really love the crescendo Dave take at the end of his solo, from 8.05. It perfectly guide you to the drum solo. Really Great!! This album is cool, it swings, it haunts you. I own this since I was a student. The father of a girlfriend of mine had this nice collection of old Jazz records and he was really into Desmond and Mulligan. I put this one and Two of a kind on a tape (it was tape time!) and I did wear out the thing. Those were among the first jazz albums I have ever had. Now I own 7000 but I still listen to these two albums quite regularly (but I still prefer this concert to the studio album from Desmond and Mulligan in their pianoless encounter "TOAK"). I think this album should be the second from Dave one should own, just after Time out of course. But here you have Gerry Mulligan as a nice addiction. Absolutly suggested.
What's Not To Like?.......2005-11-08
The Dave Brubeck Quartet did several *gooood* live recordings. What makes this one stand out is the addition of Gerry Mulligan.
Mulligan and Paul Desmond worked great together - they did another album, "Two of a Mind", where the interplay was almost telepathic - and this CD is no exception.
As with some other reviewers, I too would have preferred to see the "Time Out" personnel, drummer Joe Morrello and bassist Gene Wright, on this CD too, but Alan Dawson and Jack Six fill in nicely. (And this recording was twelve years later...) In fact, the 16:00 version of Take Five on this CD has the time for a longer drum solo than on the original "Time Out" version, not bad at all IMHO.
As for the tracks: "Truth" starts out with a vaguely foreboding motif by Brubeck, very effective, reminding me in concept of a piece like the first movement of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. Alternatively, among well-known jazz CDs, the intro to "Autumn Leaves" on Cannonball Adderley's "Somethin' Else" CD introduces the same mood, although the Brubeck piece turns uptempo much more rapidly. The interplay between Desmond and Mulligan is pretty good on this piece. The improv by Brubeck later seems to recall, what, Edgar Varese? the Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari soundtrack? - but it leads into a nice, if schizophrenic duo with Jack Six.
"Unfinished Woman", a distantly haunting melody by Mulligan, sets up a fine duo between Gerry and Dave...then a contrasting repeat with Paul Desmond and Dave. There is one annoying sub-second dropout about the 5:00 mark during this - don't know if it's just my recording.
"Koto Song" is a placid mood piece - with overtones of the Japanese instrument from which it draws its name. No Mulligan on this piece, which is perfect for Desmond anyway.
What can I add about a sixteen-minute version of "Take Five"? I do wonder what Joe Morrello would have done with the drum solo, which was Brubeck's original reason for writing this song.
"Rotterdam Blues" is more blues-tinged than anything else, but again showcases Jack Six effectively...
...and "Sweet Georgia Brown" is a nice, short, goodbye solo.
The recording, absent one dropout, is good, and the liner notes from the original album are a nice plus.
The only negative I can possibly imagine is that this is *live* jazz. I personally don't think that's a negative, but tastes vary.
So...Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond, and Gerry Mulligan playing live...what's not to like? Five stars.
We're Not All Together For The First Time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-05-18
If I were to glance at just the title of this cd for the first time, I would think the whole original quartet would be on this album, hence the name, We are ALL Together Again For The First Time. Anyway, the music was allright. Even though I am strictly a Brubeck QUARTET fan only, I didn't dismiss this album and I came to like it. But does Dave have to really put Take Five on every album. Truth is allright, and the rock song is wierd, but ok. Overall, the album was good. Desmond sounded a bit differen't. He probally lost his touch with the instrument, or his will to play!

What can be said about this CD, it is simply brilliant. The two tracks, "Truth" and "Koto Song" are enough to make this one of the best Jazz CD's I have heard. Even the rather overly played "Take Five" is inspirational on this CD.

This is good stuff.......2000-06-13
I'm a teenager just getting into jazz. I borrowed Time Out from my uncle and loved it. I went home and found this in one of our cd drawers. I put it on and was instantly mesmorized. #1 and #4 are especially good. I do like John Coltrane a bit better, but Dave Brubeck has a place in every decent jazz collection.

A CD re-issue of a direct to disc recording session.......2007-05-16
There have been any number of odd CD re-issues of this material since it was recorded, not in 1993, but in January 1978 as a limited edition and numbered direct-to-disc LP; arguably the best is the Mobile Fidelity 'gold' CD which was for all intents and purposes a limited issue release and has been out of print and unavailable for years. This CD release will have to do until someone figures out how to accurately re-release this recording with the original liner notes (and I suspect that alternate takes were used on this release). Of note is of course the magnificent backing of the Buddy Rich Big Band and Mel's always impressive vocal prowess and arrangements. This was Buddy's working band, and as such was very comfortable backing vocalists, including Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennet, Ella Fitzgerald, and Mel; in fact, Torme and Rich worked together quite frequently in the 80's. Phil Woods, the nonpareil alto saxist, is added for one track, the intro and obigato of the medley Soon It's Gonna Rain / Here's That Rainy Day. Blues In The Night "is the ringer in this set, in the sense that it's not a Torme' arrangement. The chart dates back to one of several albums Mel made accompanied by arranger Marty Paich's orchestra during the 1950's." [quote from the original liner notes by Leonard Feather]. The other chart that was well received was Bluesette, written by Toots Thielemans, the noted Belgian harmonica soloist, and arranged by Mel; Buddy was so taken with the arrangement that he kept after Torme to rewrite it sans vocal part, just for the band. Lady Be Good shows the synergy and cohesiveness that true jazz musicians have together; unfortunately, it appears that the original direct-to-disc take is lost to history, as this take isn't as good as the original D/D vinyl take. All in all, though, this is a fine addition for any Mel Torme fan and should be in your library.
Great Band, Great Singer, Great Charts.......2006-04-01
First cut to last, absolutely wonderful. The most interesting cut to me is Paul Williams' Won't Last The Day, something that was a hit for
The Carpenters. Torme is wonderful on it and the charts are superb.

Though singer Torme and drummer Rich were friends for years, they never made a recording together until relatively late in their careers. In this album, a new release of a 1993 recording, we hear two giants in their fields having fun together in a direct-to-disc LP which sounds like a live performance. Rich and his band cede artistic control here to Torme, whose arrangements are featured on all but "Blues in the Night," which, incidentally, is an amazing song, full of unusual sounds and tempos, lasting a full eight minutes, and featuring a solo of jazz tuba. Torme has perfect pitch, and Rich has perfect tempo, and together they create a jazz album which goes way beyond the traditional interpretations of these well-known songs, breaking new ground and leaving a legacy for modern performers to emulate.
The album starts traditionally enough with "When I Found You," with the trumpets sounding somewhat distant, allowing Torme's mellow voice to flourish. "Here's That Rainy Day" is one of my favorites here, its introduction also featuring "Soon It's Gonna Rain," followed by a tenor sax solo by Phil Woods (brought in for the occasion), which then continues in the background as Torme turns this traditional song into a slow, bluesy ballad, full of drama, long-held notes, and his lovely vibrato. "Bluesette" features a great Buddy Rich solo, which gradually becomes softer and continues in the background as the bluesy trumpets enter and Torme takes over.
"Lady Be Good," Torme's famous tribute to Ella Fitzgerald is almost totally scat, with musical references to Ella's famous "Yellow Basket." Rich plays noticeable, but not intrusive, riffs throughout. This is an imaginative, interesting, and unusual album, certain to appeal to jazz buffs and fans of Torme and Rich, a collaboration of two of the greats, whose interpretations here bring new sounds and meanings to old favorites. At this price, how can you lose? n Mary Whipple

Masterfully Recorded Must Have CD.......2005-08-24
Everything Jean's review from 2002 is spot on, in fact,it beat Harry Pearsons sparkling review of it in The Absolute Sound mag. by 3 years. Worth buying, if just to show how good a cd can really sound.Super!
Legendary !.......2002-04-12
MERCURY sound. At it's best, at it's fullest.
A super recording. Orchestral music like you've never heard before . . . in your home. Right, the better the stereo equipment the more you are likely to hear tons of details out of the microscopic hills and valleys of this glorious cd. However, a more modest hi-fi system will make it as well, at least to reveal the essential of the music. It all comes from the legendary "Golden Age" LP era. The album, issued by Mercury/Philips (a package of two discs), has GLORIOUS sound--as much as good as the vinyl LP. To be underlined, a very nice job at remastering those LEGENDARY archives, thanks to Wilma Cozart and the Mercury team. For orchestral music that one is a good reference cd (the sound is almost lifelike). Howard Hanson's music is delightful ; he's got a solid reputation as a composer and is a skillful conductor. One of my best picks in American music. The 'Merry Mount' is a wonderful work.*****
A Classical Composer's Tool Kit.......2000-07-21
This 2-CD set provides a unique opportunity to hear the late American composer, Howard Hanson, talk about how he approached the orchestration of symphonic works. On disk 1, several of Hanson's works are performed (conducted by the composer), including the Merry Mount Suite, Mosaics, For the First Time and Concerto for Piano. On the second disk, Hanson de-constructs The Children's Dance from Merry Mount, explaining his intent as a composer and orchestrator, with each set of instruments highlighted by including them one at a time as their colors are blended from the composer's palette. This is an invaluable aid to aspiring composers, and also to any student of music who wants to understand orchestration in a step beyond Peter and the Wolf, and Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra.
