Boiling down Bill Monroe's 40-plus years of Decca work into 16 songs is an unenviable task, but this collection does an excellent job in surveying his post-Columbia highlights. Monroe signed with Decca in 1950, after Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs had moved on to form their rival ensemble, but each of the musicians he brought into his Blue Grass Boys thereafter added a unique and vital voice (singing and instrumental) and helped in part to build an enormous legacy. For those not willing to go whole hog with the four-CD Music of Bill Monroe, this compilation provides a nice overview of his Decca tenure, including many of his best-loved favorites. --Marc Greilsamer

I Highly reccomend this CD. I like to hear Jerry Lee sing ballads and on this Cd he sings his best.He is in a catagory all by himself. Buy this one if you are a fan, you won't be sorry.

Nobody does it better.......2002-09-07

A lot of country stars used to sing "covers" of songs originally performed by others, and the results were usually not as good. Here, Jerry Lee Lewis sings a lot of old "standards" which technically are "covers" but with his unique vocal style and piano playing, it winds up being a new creation well worthy of attention. I originally bought both LP records containing the music on this CD, and they are two of my most treasured records of Jerry Lee's country period, which I think is his best genre. It is nice to have the CD so I can retire them from active playing. If you like the old standards, you will like the way Jerry Lee does them, I'm sure. I think he has more musical talent than any other performer of his generation and could have been greater than Elvis had he not made a few PR mistakes or if Elvis had not been so sexy looking to the women. But then again, he wouldn't have been Jerry Lee Lewis, the Icon. If folks would have only judged him on his music!

Miss Kitty Wells, dressed demurely in gingham and uttering ne'er a cussword, was the role model for women in country music until Patsy Cline came along. "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angels" is one of country music's defining moments. In it--as in most of her hits--Kitty was wronged and betrayed by a feckless man. Titles like "Will Your Lawyer Talk to God," "A Woman Half My Age," "Icicles Hanging From Your Heart," and "I'd Rather Stay Home," pretty much fill out the story. I give this 4 stars not because this is the definite Kitty Wells collection, because it isn't. I give it four stars because it is one of the few collections that offer a good sampling of her ORIGINAL recordings.

Now, let me tell you about an ideal Kitty Wells set. Take all of her top 10's and some of her lesser known songs and there you go, it's not that hard to figure out.

By listening to the songs here, you imagine that Kitty bacically played the housewife who was fighting for a say in what went on. True, but there was much more to her than that.

She was a masterful honky tonk singer, an excellent gospel singer, and when the "Nashville Sound" hit in the 1960's she mastered that also. In fact, Kitty was probably one of the most versatile performers in country music history.

To summerize, this is a great set, all the songs are original recordings, and the notes are awesome. But, you need to hear a lot more of her songs to understand what she was all about.

And also, avoid her Step One recordings as well as anything that in on Deluxe, Compass, or anything that doesn't say "Decca," "MCA," or "Bear Family" somewhere on the package.

Pray that Bear Family will release a 28 or 30 song cd of her hits.

The Queen of Country!.......2003-12-21

There must be a reason amazon posts this selection first among the Kitty choices. This one is a winner. Muriel Ellen Deason ("Kiity Wells") is a true to life native of Nashville. According to Billboard, she had 64 chart hits from 1952 to 1968. A representative 11 of them are included here and the other 5 fit right in. Kitty's plain and plaintive woman wronged no frills voice shines through. Highlights for this reviewer were "Will Your Lawyer Talk to God?","Password" and especially "A Woman Half My Age". That one just may be in the "Stand By Your Man" league of forgiving women songs! Those last 2 came late in Kitty's career and were composed in the (then) new "Nashville Sound". This woman is versatile! She handles those just as well as the traditional releases. This CD is absolutely recommended for no nonsense country sung by a real lady of the old school. As we know all too well, that school has been out of session for a tragically long time.

Kitty Still The Queen.......2002-06-17

This CD is absolute evidence that Kitty is still the queen of country music. In fact I don't think she even has a close rival for the title. She is the Hank Williams of female singers, the highest compliment I can pay her. Buy this CD and see what I mean

Undisputed Queen of C&W.......2002-04-09

I'm a big fan of Patsy Cline's music but in all honesty her vocal sound was more in line with pop music than Country. It doesn't however take away from any of her greatness. But Kitty Wells was pure uncut Country all the way-The female Ernest Tubb if you will. Two of my all time faves are on this cd- The classic "Will your lawyer talk to God" and "Password"-- oh yeah "It wasn't God who..." is also a favorite. These are the original tracks and therefore make this cd worth buying. We love ya Kitty !

Grandpa Jones's death in 1998 robbed country music of its last link to the folk songs, vaudeville, and hokum from which it partly came. There's little in the way of darkness or pain here and there are some awkward flirtations with '50s mainstream country, but songs like "Rattler's Pup," "Mountain Dew," "Eight More Miles to Louisville," and "Old Towzer" are endlessly engaging. They're also a catechism on where country music came from, even if they don't tell us much about where it's headed. Listen too for Grandpa's hayseed banjo and Paul Yandell's tiny, perfect guitar solos. --Colin Escott

Like so many people, my memories of Grandpa Jones extend about as far as his appearances on Hee Haw, but this CD is but a sampling of some of his best-known music. "Mountain Dew" and "Rattler's Pup" are instantly recognizable, and bring to mind a time when music was just plain fun. "Everyone's Grandpa" is probably a more complete collection of his work, but this is far more affordable and accessible for those wanting to add just the essentials.

Great banjo-led folk-country music.......2005-01-13

Grandpa Jones recorded for several different record labels and often re-recorded his old songs. In the thirties, he was nicknamed Grandpa aged just 22 because of his general outlook and his old-sounding voice.

In the late forties, Grandpa achieved great success with Mountain dew, Eight more miles to Louisville and Old rattler, while signed to King records. He switched to RCA in 1952 and made some great music for them before switching to Decca in 1956. This CD contains everything that Grandpa recorded for Decca between 1956 and 1959 - just fifteen studio tracks and one live recording.

Here you will find re-recordings of some of his earlier country hits with King (Mountain dew, Eight more miles to Louisville, Dark as a dungeon) along with songs about dogs and hunting (Rattler's pup, The hunting's over for tonight, Old Towzer).

Grandpa had a sense of humor, never clearer than in Don't bring your banjo home, an adaptation of Johnny Cash's Don't take your guns to town, and Daylight saving time, about changing the clocks in October (a debate that still endures). Grandpa clearly liked Johnny's early music - he also recorded a straight cover of Picking time. Another great cover is Waiting for a train, originally by Jimmie Rodgers, Grandpa's first musical idol.

After his spell with Decca, Grandpa recorded for Monument (1960 to 1973) and CMH (1976 to 1981) where he continued to make great music, albeit in a somewhat different style, more folk than country.

If you enjoy old-time country or folk music, especially if you like Pete Seeger (another banjo-picking singer), you might enjoy Grandpa's music. But if you want the original versions of his country hits, look for a compilation of his King recordings.

Grandpa's late-'50s Decca sides still sound great.......2004-10-12

Country-music master Grandpa Jones recorded prolifically for several different labels; this CD represents his entire output for Decca Records (1956-59). This writer was pleasantly surprised by what a consistent performer Jones was: the 1958 rendition of "Mountain Dew" heard here is almost precisely the same as his 1971 performance on "Hee Haw," right down to the ad-libbed humming during one of the banjo breaks.

The CD features traditional country ballads (with Jones leading a close-harmony vocal arrangement); up-tempo banjo specialties with Grandpa's infectiously genial solo vocals ("Mountain Dew" is a highlight); and sometimes a happy combination of the two styles ("The Huntin's Over for Tonight" is a glorious hootenanny that you'll enjoy again and again, with Jones leading the whole gang). There are also some tongue-in-cheek selections: "Daylight Saving Time" has Grandpa railing against monkeying with the clocks, and he practically spits out the title phrase contemptuously; "The All-American Boy," the story of a backwoods kid who became a rock-and-roll sensation, seems an odd choice for Grandpa Jones, but he sings it in character with chip-on-the-shoulder cockiness.

This collection could have used "Old Rattler" and some of Grandpa's other tunes, but it is confined to the Decca sessions. It does include an unissued track, a live recording, and a rare side issued only as a 45-rpm single. Those who know Grandpa's vocals on "Hee Haw" will not be disappointed by this CD.

Classiest Grandpa Jones collection available........2003-12-04

First off, the music here is from his time on Decca Records in the 1950's, in fact this is his entire Decca output (excluding one lost song). Now, Grandpa's most well known recordings are were on King Records, and his chart hits were on Monument Records.

The booklet is very well done, and the essay is great. Recording dates are included.

The Sons of the Pioneers set the standard for cowboy music that remains in place more than a half-century after their heyday. The group (which Roy Rogers helped form) combined vocal and instrumental expertise with a sure-shootin' flair for finding matchless material, whether that meant adopting a traditional tune such as "Rye Whiskey" or generating original compositions. Early member Bob Nolan penned "Way Out West," which helped launch the outfit in the early '30s. It's on this sterling 16-song greatest-hits collection along with the enchanting "Hills of Old Wyomin'" and, of course, "Tumbling Tumbleweeds." Now that's white-hat Western music! Now, let's try to clean our language up a little bit here.......2005-01-27

No offense to James, but I would strongly suggest that you maybe clean up your language just a little bit when you are writing a review especially if you are a true Christian. The Sons Of The Pioneers are truly one of country music's finest duos of all time and I am so honoured to have every recording they ever did on 15 CD's and many of them were taken from old scratchy 78's and not put out on CD. A very dear friend of mine compiled all of the Pioneers's recordings in cronological order and put together 15 CD's of all their recorded output including the Bear releases. This CD features their very first single they ever recorded in 1934 Way Out There and I especially love the original version of Tumbling Tumble Weeds which is on this CD. I totally agree with James that Somebody Bigger Than You And I is probably the most beautiful gospel song I have ever heard in my whole life and Elvis of course did a beautiful version of it on his How Great Thou Art album in 1966. In my opinion the original members of the Sons Of The Pioneers will always be the greatest ever and nobody can come close to these great early recordings of Lenerd Sly AKA Roy Rodgers, Bob Nolan and Tim Spencer. Buy this CD! You won't be disappointed!

I Wanted To Sing These!.......2003-09-10

When I found this CD, my heart took a hitch! These songs, ones I've heard for too many years because my father told me about the Sons of the Pioneers, and never mind Roy Rogers! Dad loved this group, and I learned to love them too, sitting with dad on the back porch, the smoke from Dad's cigarettere curling up into the empty "up there," as we listened to the radio, or his old Sears-Robuck 33 & 1/3 stereo record-player. Dad's hoarse cigarette-roughened almost-tenor would chime in. And I'd sing with him, trying to sing harmony, and we would sing these songs. . .

When I got this CD, the old harmonies were there! One could see one's self sitting there, about the campfire, singing these old ballads, remembering friends gone and trails to be ridden yet. . .and something more! Track 16, "Somebody Bigger Than You and I" was my father's favorite song. . .a Baptist church quartet discovered they had to become a quintent to sing it properly .

I listen to this CD to relax. . .those harmonies, those simple guitar/fiddle melodies and harmonies/and those voices. . .

Good god, I can't remember the last time when "voices," meaning the plural, not the singular, meant something in recorded music.

Oh hell, buy this CD. . .sit back. Listen. Sing along.

There will soon be a time when there's nobody left in the world who listened to the Sons of the Pioneers' output when it was released during their peak in the '30s and '40s. When that happens, the Sons will still have a place in our music consciousness, though a slightly different one. The music of the Sons will then become some of the weirdest music ever recorded, not just some of the best.
Being only 25 years old, I can assure you with some credibility that if you play this compilation in the company of those under the age of 30, of any musical persuasion, you'll get more blank stares than if you played them the most avant-garde piece of contemporary music you can find. This is no criticism of the Sons - it's a credit. They were SO good at what they did that they cannot be successfully replicated anymore, and the subject matter they dealt with in their songs simply no longer exists in the American consciousness, which makes them a relic of a wonderful kind.
What the world doesn't know is that it NEEDS the Sons. It needs them to be this (three-part) voice of simultaneous gonzo weirdness and integrity to show modern musicians and regular citizens alike how the two can be balanced. Contemporary weirdness is almost always accompanied by the requisite real-life weirdness the artist feels they must achieve to validate their art. This pose has been old for some time now. Although the content of the Sons' songs is more or less lost on younger generations, the quality and eerieness of their music and singing will never age and cannot be ignored by those who understand music.
Two things to consider about the Sons: 1)The frontier themes in their lyrics were a thing of the past even when they were written. Nolan and company were looking back even then, which gives them an even greater depth of history and nostalgia than their age would suggest. They were romantics - providing a hopeful, non-industrial and more utopian alternative to a war-time era. 2)They were one of a handful of country artists from their era not to champion, or even discuss, chemical indulgence in their songs. It may seem stupid and humorous, but it's true. They maintained a high level of integrity throughout their career.
The monotony and worn-out cliches of modern country (and just about any other) music only serves to strengthen the legend of the Sons and make them more unique. The sad thing is that it takes people like me to turn young people on, one at a time, to the Sons because even country radio doesn't play 'em anymore. And you know why? Because they're TOO WEIRD.

This collection offers a fine introduction to the most agreeable of country crooners, sampling a variety of styles. Red Foley puts his conversational baritone to gospel favorites, catchy novelties (including one here with Ernest Tubb), souped-up boogies, and of course, the sentimental classic "Old Shep," a boy-and-his-dog tale that manages to be both mawkish and moving at the same time. --Marc Greilsamer

Smooth; Unparalled Pop of the 40's.......2006-08-16
Some nostalgic albums reissues from the 30's, 40's and 50's just don't age that well and just don't sound as well as you might remember them if you were alive in that era. This is a wonderful exception and its sounds as fresh as it did when these songs were first popular. Lots of artists have done Chattanooga Shoe Shine Boy, but I never cared for most of the versions; this one by Red Foley is the best version I've ever heard. I came across this album by accident, as you don't often hear Foley's name. Strange since he had the first million seller gospel album and sold over 25 million records in his heydey and influenced many other artists. I am sure I must have heard Foley in the 50's without knowing his name. At that time, this was not called country or country western music. It was cowboy music or it was just the music we listened to on the radio; we didn't really classify it. This is a nice variety of songs all the way from the sad (Old Shep) to the humorous (Don't Be Ashamed of Your Age). There are a few really nice duets too. The sound is sharp and Red's voice is smooth and pleasant. If there is anything disappointing about this album it's that it doesn't go on a lot longer; still with 16 songs, one can't complain too much.
Foley: One of Country's Unsung Heroes.......2000-02-14
Few people today realize what a major impact Red Foley once made on country music, because so little has been written about him over the years. In the 1940s, Foley was a household word in country music. As the host of NBC/WSM's Grand Ole Opry, he was heard coast-to-coast on one of network radio's highest-rated shows, and was highly respected by fans and fellow artists alike.
Foley's smooth vocal style--quite a lot different from many country artists of the day--helped give him broad appeal. It also enabled him to capably deliver many different types of songs, and this CD presents a great cross-section of them. Here, you'll hear "Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy," a number-one boogie-woogie tune from 1950 (number one on both the country AND pop charts at the time), "Careless Kisses," a great example of Foley's delivery of the smooth ballad, and "Peace in the Valley," one of the many sacred songs Red sang so beautifully on his radio programs, and the record that has the distinction of being gospel music's first million-seller.
If you want to get a glimpse at one of country's giants at the absolute peak of his performing ability, listen to this album. Artists ranging in styles from Hank Williams to Elvis Presley loved his music and admired him, and the songs here clearly demonstrate why.
Red Foley was the consummate entertainer, and was loved by fans around the world. It's a shame he gets so little credit for the influence he has had on the country and gospel formats, but this CD goes a long way toward keeping his memory alive.

I am looking for a record he released. I think the name was "Peace in the Valley",the old version.He narriated a song in it. It was about a little childs death. One line was "HE didn't give that child by a hundred thousand years, He just thought you needed some sunshine, so He lent him to you for a whle" Other songs were "Lady of Fatamia",If you go first, Peace In the Valley, and Just a closer Walk with Thee." If anyone can tell how to get a copy of this album,I would be vere happy. It (the album) got lost when my mother died. It means a lot to me.Help me if you can. Thanx.

The first time I heard Red Foley was on a demo disk featuring him and the Andrews Sisters singing one of the songs on this CD Hang Your Head in Shame, on the flip side was another song "Where Is Your Wandering Mother Tonight". So the first song Hang Your Head In Shame brings back memories. When the Pointer Sisters came out with their song Fairytale I imediatley thought of Hang Your Head In Shame they are both in the same genre of song. Other songs on this CD also bring back memories of a simplier time Old Shep. Chattanooga Shoe Shine Boy is a wonderful example of Texas Swing often associated with Bob Wills. While the years seem to have buried Red I feel he is an intergral part of American Popular as well as C&W Music. I only have to hear"Don't your conscience ever bother you everytime you hear my name. Try and think of all that I've been through and Hang your head in shame. You don't miss me since we've been apart, I wish I could say the same...

Lynn's distinction is as the first female country singer to write her own compositions. In doing so, she proved that women in country were capable of more that just torch songs and pop stylings. "You Ain't Woman Enough," "Don't Come Home A Drinkin'" "I'm A Honky Tonk Girl," "Fist City," and "You're Looking at Country" show a vibrant, independent woman with her own strong beliefs and keen observations. In her songs, she (literally) fights for her man's loyalty, stands up to his abuse, and moves on when he leaves. Among these 16 cuts are duets with Ernest Tubb and Conway Twitty, the controversial "The Pill" (yes, that pill), and her autobiographical trademark, "Coal Miner's Daughter." Though the track list is shorter (and the timeframe narrower) than 2002's "All Time Greatest Hits," this 1991 release is still a terrific summary of Lynn's key years, spanning from the mid 60s through the mid-70s and hitting most of the highpoints along the way. There are also enough non-hit tracks to keep this from simply being a recitation of Lynn's chart success, but the singular focus on Lynn's solo work does leave other parts of her career, such as the hit duets she recorded with Conway Twitty.

Those looking for an affordable way to school themselves on one of the cornerstone performers of country music could hardly do better than this introduction to the coal miner's daughter. One warning: be prepared to trade it back in for 1994's more thorough 3-disc "Honky Tonk Girl," because as good as this is, it can't even hope to contain all the treasures in Lynn's catalog.

My favorite is "Fist City," but things like "Blue Kentucky Girl," "One's on the Way," "You Ain't Woman Enough," and "Coal Miner's Daugher" and others are really good. A bunch songs I like less, including "After the Fire is Gone," "Out of My Head and Back in My Bed," "Honky Tonk Girl," "When the Tingle Becomes a Chill," and more. These are songs I like less or don't care for much, but that's more because they don't make much of an impression of likeability on me. I don't think they're bad by any means. It would be hard to find a better comedian/musician of his era than Johnny Bond. Most folks have heard "Hot Rod Lincoln" and "10 Little Bottles", but this fine small collection of Bond's hits also include his tribute to Country copyright infringement, "Thinkin' Tonite". Johnny was no stranger to the effects of alcohol and this disc includes a few songs in that vein, such as "Sick, Sober, & Sorry", "Three Sheets in the Wind", and "Here Come the Elephants". Perhaps the most amusing is his Red Sovine collaboration on "Gear Jammer and the Hobo". I would give this 5-Stars if it were not such a slim collection of Johnny Bond's works, but, it is a fine intro to one of Country's first true comedians.

More Country Than Bluegrass.......2007-06-02
Just a year after their Rebel Records release BLACKJACK, J.D Crowe & the New South released an album that was more country than bluegrass. Not only does the new lineup feature a fulltime drummer, but future country star Keith Whitley is on board providing guitar and lead vocals. Sure, there are still bluegrass tunes like "She's Gone, Gone, Gone" and "My Window Faces the South," but Crowe is obviously courting a wider audience with more country-sounding fare like the steel guitar-driven title track and the wonderful "Railroad Lady." They also turn in a version of "Sin City" that is superior to their version that appeared on BLACKJACK--mostly due to Doug Jernigan's excellent steel guitar. While this album may not have pleased the more hardcore bluegrass fans, it was a welcome change to hear more traditional country than what Nashville was turning out at the time. RECOMMENDED
A Masterpiece Featuring The Late Keith Whitley.......2003-09-06
I could never say enough about this CD or this group at the time it was recorded. This was Progressive Bluegrass at it's finest.
If you're familiar with the 1960s and 70s Osborne Brothers classics, this recording has much the same flavor as it features banjo, mandolin and fiddle along with drums and pedal steel guitar. The three part harmony is simply amazing as it is on all Crowe's classic lps. Keith Whitley was trying his wings here shifting from the Carter Stanley sound-alike singing he did on the Ralph Stanley albums to a more "Country" (i.e. Haggard-Frizzell-Jones flavored sound). Country and Bluegrass fans alike will love this CD. I could go over each track, but I'd have to write a book to tell how good each one is. I strongly suggest you buy this one and add it to your collection. You'll love it. I'd like to make one more suggestion... That Rounder re-release the follow up to this masterpiece: "Somewhere Between" which was Whitley's swing over to more mainstream Country music.
The only reason I gave this CD 5 stars was because I couldn't give it more.
A 1970s newgrass gem.......2003-02-13
An alumnus of one of the early 1960s top bluegrass bands, banjo player Crowe set out in the '70s as a newgrass traditionalist, skirting the border between bluegrass and country in much the same way as his mentor, Jimmy Martin. This is my favorite of the New South albums (though the rest are all good, too) and is one of the highwater marks of the '70s progressive bluegrass scene... It features a gorgeous version of the title track, Jonathan Edward's classsic alterna-country anthem, as well as upbeat versions of "Gone, Gone, Gone" and "My Window Faces The South." The band also included fiddler Bobby Sloane, bluegrass whizkid, Jimmy Gaudreau, and the late Keith Whitley (who went on to briefly become a big Nashville Top 40 guy). Lots of fun, and highly recommended.

I'm so sorry to tell you this, A Music Fan, but, darling, there is just no one out there today who can take his place or even come close. True country music, I'm afraid, is gone forever except in these albums, CDs, etc. that they've left for us. Thanks to Amazon, I'm able to purchase the CDs in order to save my LPs and cassettes.
This is country music........1999-04-10
Ernest Tubb is a true country music singer. His songs have feeling and tell a story. That is what country music is supposed to be. The new country might be okay for some, but give me "Walkin The Floor Over You" or "Waltz Across Texas" any day. The simplicity of the music, the feeling in the vocals, the meaning to the lyrics, please let's put some Country in our Country. Take Us Back. To Those Honky Tonk Days!
