Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

My problem was not with the quality of the cd, but with the plastic case. The cd cases always come cracked. Although it doesn't affect the quality of the cd itself, it's rather disheartening that Amazon charges customers for its poor shipping.

Disney's Greatest 3

Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:

After motoring through the well-slung hip-hop timeline in the promising first verse of "I Was There," KRS-One regresses into the barbs of a sadly obvious refrain: "Where were you?" Wherever we were, a generation grew up living hip-hop culture at various levels of immersion, and if too few of us hear this album, it'll be a damn shame. KRS reserves equal bile for artistic hacks like, say, "Kentucky Fried Chicken deejays promotin' breast and thigh," but all such vitriol appears like remote islands in an ocean of his seasoned skills and reasoned better instincts. For his part, Marley Marl spirits through these tracks with a carefully curated bag of tricks that spans decades. "Over 30" stomps with lo-fi, '80s verve; "Kill a Rapper" channels the Detroit hip-hop underground of the mid-'90s; and the title track lumbers along on a mix that only an ill-conceived marketing campaign could fail to make a hit of. But whether or not Hip Hop Lives lasts, KRS-One never misses the most important point. "So write this down, on your black books and journals," he barks, "hip-hop culture is eternal." --Jason KirkCustomer Reviews:
Teaching the kids what real hip-hop is all about.......2007-07-16
Being a long-time KRS-One/BDP fan, I found the album to be quite a treat, and an excellent return to form. I found it to have plenty of repeat listening value. With that said, I did feel some of KRS-One's lyrics could be a little better. As you know, KRS-One is The Teacher, and this time around, he is teaching hip-hop's legacy. It may seem like a relatively dry subject for a long-time hip-hop aficionado, but it turns out quite well.
Many of the lyrics are very nostalgic, and even more give a new perspective on hip-hop's "true school". The most mind-boggling example of it's redundancy would have to be "I Was There", where KRS-One talks about his past experiences in hip-hop throughout the 80s and 90s. Many hip-hop heads know these facts all to well, but does serve well to the unconverted. Other than that, nothing seems out of place, or of poor quality. "Hip-Hop Lives" makes an excellent single to defy Nas' recent claims on his latest album. Marley Marl's beat on "Musika" featuring Magic Juan is just plain addictive. "Rising to the Top" is probably my favorite joint here. KRS-One beautifully tells the story between Marley Marl's Juice Crew and Boogie Down Productions with lyrics like this - "We answered MC Shan's 'Queensbridge' / A dope jam about where he was from and where he lived / But in the Bronx there was these kids / KRS, Scott La Rock trying to live". The closing lyrics were a nice surprise - "To Marley and Shan I am indebted / For the start of my career these guys could take credit / For my rappin', the whole battle they let it all happen" - proving that battling is an essential part of hip-hop, and keeping it's art sharp. Other stand outs include the excellent "Over 30" and "All Skool". And you really can't beat KRS-One's commentary on "Kill a Rapper" where he professes the fact that when the law or general public is concerned, the killing of a rapper/producer (such as Scott La Rock, 2Pac, Big L or Mac Dre) ends up as an unsolved case in the end. Any way you slice it, KRS-One and Marley Marl come correct with this fine offering. One can only hope that they will continue on make albums until 2015.

"If You Think Hip Hop's Alive, Throw Up Your Lighter!" (Rating: 7 out of 10- -3.5 stars).......2007-06-20
One thing that really jumped out at me was Kris' rhymes. All over this album, it's like he indirectly says "I'm F'n good at this". Of course we know he is good at hip hop, but it really doesn't help parading it all ovet the album. "I Was There" would sort of flow on this, as Kris says that he was there when many important events in hip hop happened. Yes, that is good to talk about, but he should keep in mind that not many people want to hear what he has gone through, because of the fact that it's already known.
Some good tracks are on this LP are "Kill A Rapper" which talks about all the unsolved crimes of slain rappers. "Hip Hop Lives" is another great track at the beginning of the album. "All Skool" and "House Of Hits" which the latter features Chief Rocker Busy Bee (another old school emcee) are other standouts on the album. Other guests on this album are Magic Juan, who drops on the spanish sounding song "Musika". Blaq Poet drops in for the song "The Victory" which is a solid track.
Hip Hop Lives is a hit and miss album by Kris and Marley. No doubt that they can keep up with music today. I believe that this album is trying to appeal to older and younger listeners, and it carries it's weight for the most part. I wasn't expecting no classic material on here, but it does satisfy many listeners on many levels. I recommend that you check this album out, because it's definately worth a few spins. Off the subject a bit: I just heard about a few weeks ago that Marley Marl suffered a heart attack, and I seriously hope that he is okay and recovers nicely. Peace!

Hip Is The Knowledge Hop Is The Movement {3 ½ Stars}.......2007-06-09
I think one of the obvious flaws is Kris constantly beating his chest on track after track. I love KRS One. I grew up on him. I remember what I was doing the very day I heard "My Philosophy" for the first time (I mean to the exact hour) and lost my mind. Dude is a legend without question. This is why it's hard for me to say this, but I found a lot of what KRS had to say to be pretty repetitive. I haven't been this disinterested in a KRS affiliated album since the Spiritual Minded album. Maybe disinterested is the wrong word. I mean, the lyrics are still entertaining, but I guess what I'm getting at is that the replay value just isn't what you've come to expect from a legend like KRS...especially when he pairs up with another legend like Marley Marl. On tracks like the aptly titled "Nothing New" Kris steps into the aforementioned braggart role and on "I Was There" KRS waxes nonstop about how long he's been around and how he was a witness to many, many milestones within hip hop culture. The thing is, fans of KRS already know these things so a lot of this album sounds to me like he's preaching to the choir. I noticed that a few reviewers were mostly unimpressed by the production from Marley, I pretty much loved it. There are a few that miss the mark. "Musika" sounds like a rehash of "Funky Child" but with way less appeal as the L.O.T.U.G. hit.
With all that being said, Hip Hop Lives is still worth looking into. If you're like me and grew up on both KRS and Marley you'll find this joint quite enjoyable. I'll always support KRS because he's never let me down and he supplied the beats and rhymes that were the soundtrack many of my summers. Newer heads may find the production somewhat tired, but despite the hit and miss quality, I still like it. I suggest you leave all expectations at the door and listen with open ears.

For the casual fan, The Essential Billy Joel still does the trick. However, this five-disc set rewards fans who have stuck by the Piano Man through the last four decades. Packed with 66 tracks, 23 previously unreleased, My Lives includes rare solo demos, b-sides, soundtrack hits, unexpected cover songs and plenty of blackmail material. Before hitting his stride as a hugely successful pop artist, it turns out Joel put in time with psychedelic rockers (Lost Souls), pseudo R&B players (the Hassles) and a prog-metal duo (Attila). It's all here. What this collection reveals is that despite his fairly consistent mainstream output the singer never stopped experimenting. There is a reggae version of "Only The Good Die Young," a soulful reading of Leonard Cohen's "Light as the Breeze," supper club jazz with Duke Ellington's "In A Sentimental Mood," even classical interludes from his later years. There's room to grumble about what did and didn't make the cut, particularly with the stray album cuts, but this is a great testament to the range and restless spirit of the songwriter. The DVD features a 1993 concert filmed in Hamburg. --Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:
For the serious Billy Joel collector/Fanatic.......2007-02-20
If this set was targeted for the serious collector, which I think it is, I don't see why we would need the album studio tracks of some songs such as innocent man, still rock 'n roll, since any fanatic of Billy Joel would have these songs on their original albums, and remasterd CDs, or even the great compilation.
In short, this box is for Billy Joel fanatics. Others would be served with "1973-97-Complete Hits Collection" much better.
Not that great.......2007-02-08
Add to this the fact that many of the tunes that are here are easily found on his "Greatest Hits" CDs, and that true fans of his work will *already have that.*
Another thing that was not necessary was the last disc that included a lot of his live performances. His live performances (to put it charitably) leave a lot to be desired.
There are things that you can't find on here, like "Why Should I Worry?", but this CD is MOST DEFINITELY not worth the purchase price if new and *just barely* worth the purchase price second hand.
The Rest of the Story.......2007-01-09
Billy Joel's musical life.......2006-10-04
Simply Awesome.......2006-07-27
I've always looked at Billy Joel's career as having three phases. The first phase is what I call "Old Billy Joel". This basically includes all of his material from "Cold Spring Harbor" through "Turnstiles". These are perhaps the strongest days as the piano sound, but they also contain most of Joel's least heard material. The next phase is what I call "Middle Billy Joel". This was his most successful period and covers from "The Stranger" to "Billy Joel Greatest Hits Volume 1 and 2". Joel would go through a transition during this phase - expanding his musical horizons and exploring different avenues. The final phase is the "Later Billy Joel" phase - this covers "The Bridge" to "River of Dreams". "My Lives" actually extends this by including what I call "Pre Billy Joel" - materials from the 1960s with "60s" bands he was associated with. It also includes material from Joel's classical album, "Fantasies and Delusions".
There is so much that this collection has to offer. Here are nine highlights to look out to:
1. The pre-Billy Joel material really gives us a good feel for Billy's roots in Rock. The early songs that make up the first 5 tracks demonstrate Billy's roots in "60s Rock" (psychedelic, R&B, Beatle-sque). These tracks include Billy as part of other bands (The Lost Souls, The Hassles,Attila)
2. Perhaps the strongest point of this set are the "Alternative Versions of Songs". These are recordings with different lyrics and titles that became Billy Joel classics and songs released on albums. Included in this collection are" "New Mexico" (became "Worse Comes to Worst"); "These Rhinestone Days" (became "I Loved These Days"); "The End of the World" (became the B-side "Elvis Presley Blvd"); "The Prime of Your Life" (became "The Longest Time"); and "Motorcycle Song" (became "All About Soul"). I think "Motorcycle Song" is the best of the group.
3. Another strong point are "Alternate Takes of Songs". These are modified demo versions from an arrangement and melody standpoint. Included in this collection are: "Piano Man"; "Miami 2017"; "Only the Good Die Young"; "Christie Lee"; "And So It Goes"; "I Go to Extremes"; "Keeping the Faith" (a 12-inch version); and "The River of Dreams".
4. One thing many people may not realize is how strong a cover artist Billy Joel is. "Shout", "All Shook Up", "A Hard Day's Night", "Heartbreak Hotel", "Hey Girl", and "When You Wish Upon a Star" are the strongest covers that are included. Despite not including the "whole song", "Shout" might be the best cover Billy has done.
5. The live DVD from "The River of Dreams" tour is very good. It focuses on more of Billy's material from the second half of his career. The video quality is outstanding. I really enjoyed the inclusion of "No Man's Land" - an underrated track. Billy picking up the guitar for "We Didn't Start the Fire" and "A Hard Day's Night" is amazing. The only negative is that the disc doesn't show enough of Billy's sense of humor that he normally demonstrates in concert.
6. The collection does include several album cuts. I'm not sure if they are put in for filler or not, but with the exception of "It's Still Only Rock and Roll to Me" - these are cuts that haven't been seen on any previous "greatest hits" collections.
7.The 4th Disc includes a "hidden track". Billy has always demonstrated a sense of humor and this "hidden track" is a promo from 1980 for his "Glass Houses" album that I found very entertaining.
8.When it comes to Billy's work with Elton John, there isn't much out on the marketplace. It was nice they included live duets of "You May Be Right" and "A Hard Day's Night" with Elton John. (It should be noted that "A Hard Day's Night" was recorded in Frankfurt and is included on the DVD, but the DVD version doesn't have Elton John).
9.A good boxed set is always going to include a good booklet and "My Lives" is no exception. There is a detailed discography of the tracks as well as a list of awards. There also superb write-up on Billy by Anthony DeCurtis as well as some testimonials by people who knew Billy.
This "anthology"-style collection is as good as it gets. This collection not only will keep the serious Billy Joel fan happy, but even keep the casual fan entertained. Highly recommended.

When Wagner set the Ring to music, he intended the orchestra to act in the fashion of a chorus from a classic Greek tragedy--setting the mood and commenting on the action. In order to allow a nonverbal musical line to reflect on the plot, Wagner developed a psychologically and musically complex symbology to communicate his thoughts to the listener. From the beginning the Ring has spawned numerous written commentaries on the relationships of the motif structure, but by using examples from the Decca Ring recording, Deryck Cooke's thoughtful spoken commentary is by far the most accessible guide for either the fledgling Ring enthusiast or the seasoned veteran. --Christian C. FASCINATING STUDY FOR NOVICES AND AFFICIONADOS ALIKE.......2006-08-16
It wasn't the first time this has been tried. The famous HMV sets from the late 20's also included recorded examples of over 100 motifs. (These, by the way, are available as part of the Pearl reissue of those wonderful HMV recordings). What that set lacked was the wonderful insights as well as the approachability of the talk by Deryck Cooke. Cooke was a great and much missed musicologist - a Mahler expert responsible for the performing edition of the Tenth Symphony still most played today, a fascinating explorer into the nature of music's basic building-blocks in his excellent book, The Language of Music, and an inspiring and elucidating critic of Wagner's work as shown by the fascinating book he left unfinished at his death, I Saw the World End.
On these CDs he does much more than list the leitmotifs and identify them as calling-cards. He shows the amazingly integrated and organic growth of the musical material that Wagner uses throughout his vast work. He demonstrates how motifs can change their sense and meaning as they evolve through the drama. And he shows how the complex combinations of motifs can radically advance both the musical and the dramatic narrative of the piece. There are even places where he corrects the misinterpretation of some of the motifs that had become ingrained from early commentators' false labels.
This set should engage and enlighten anyone with an interest in Wagner's huge and inexhaustible tetralogy. Do give it a try - no matter how far down the road to Wagnerianism you are.
Welcome back to a classic analysis.......2006-05-28
If all you want is dilettantish baby food, there are plenty of dumbed-down Wagner commentaries on the market, stretching from Anna Russell's famous monologue (which doesn't pretend to be anything other than a parody aimed at morons) to the latest standard-issue "Wagner-was-a-Nazi-boo-hiss" feuilleton (which, unfortunately, does). Without reasonable score-reading skill you will find Cooke useless, however diligently you have ploughed through Marx, Jung, Freud, or other gurus purportedly relevant to THE RING. Cooke expects you to use your brains and your musical sense. Quelle horreur. At today's BBC his "elitism" would render him unemployable.
Essential for Understanding Wagner's Ring Cycle.......2006-05-15
Bottom line, buy this set and study it if the Ring has captivated you as it has countless others. The presentation is dry, but sticking with it brings measureless and longlasting rewards.

The title of this bonus-track-rich, 10-disc chronicle of Robert Plant's post-Led Zeppelin career refers not only to the number of solo albums the singer has released since Zep flamed out in 1980, but also his penchant for stubborn endurance and artistic reinvention in the face of time and the tides of fashion. While both Plant and Jimmy Page have never been able to fully escape the lengthy shadows of their original world-beating collaboration, it's the vocalist who's best--if irregularly--tempered, teased, and folded Zep's legacy into his mercurial solo career, with his 1982 debut Pictures at Eleven and 1988's Now & Zen being the most overt about it. More crucial to Plant's restless muse has been a willingness to move beyond Led Zeppelin, whether successfully casting a more structured set of songs in synth-drenched new wave veneer on "Principle of Moments" (supplemented here by the previously unreleased "Turnaround" and three live cuts, including an unlikely cover of Bob Marley's "Lively Up Yourself"), revisiting a wide swath of influential roots on the Honeydrippers EP and his first release with contemporary backing band Strange Sensation on 2002's Dreamland, or the symphonic ambitions of Manic Nirvana and multihued folk retrenchment of Fate of Nations. Enhanced by 26 bonus tracks of outtakes, demos, live cuts, and remixes, the nine albums anthologized here are also covered in an insightful essay by journalist Ed Vulliamy. The set's bonus DVD contains an hour-long retrospective hosted by Plant himself and features rare film clips and comments from many of his collaborators and admirers, as well as 20 career-spanning solo videos. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
Legendary vocalist Robert Plant's extraordinary post-Led Zeppelin career is celebrated in this inspired 10-disc box set that encompasses his nine solo albums, expanded and remastered, and a bonus DVD with a one-hour documentary!Customer Reviews:
An Alternative Truth.......2007-06-24
The first thing is, the remastering. I did a back to back comparison of "Principle of Moments" last night. This is my favorite Plant work, and was the one I most wanted to hear.
The truth is, it really isn't all that different. Once again, they've simply boosted the volume of the disc. So, you put in the remastered disc and set the volume, ansd then put in the original disc, and you can barely hear anything.
Turn up the volume on the original disc though, and you have pretty much the same sound as the new one. It's got the same clarity, the same detail. Perhaps there are minor differences, slightly tighter bass, a minute bit of detail more, but honestly, it's not anything to get excited about.
So in all honesty, the "remaster" is a bit of a red-herring. It's a shame, because that was the main pull for me.
As for the bonus DVD - the hour documentary is reasonably interesting, although it's far too brief. Plant only talks about songs that have accompanying videos, which means my favorite tracks never get a mention. And with only and hour, he doesn't get to give any real details about the various periods the albums were made in.
As for the 20 something videos - they're all here. The good news is, they're in stereo, DTS 5.1, and Dolby 5.1. Always a nice bonus that.
The bad news is, they videos themselves are all basically unwatchable. That embarassing 80's stuff is cringeworthy to the extreme, and Plant mostly makes a fool of himself.
The packaging is great.
The individual releases have the full liner notes taken from the box set included, so if you simply go for the titles you care about, you don't miss anything.
Still - if you're a Plant fan why not grab this? It's not ASTONISHING - but it's pretty good and complete.
Wish I could give it 3 1/2.......2007-05-05
All I am is a singer who writes a few songs........2007-04-27
Despite his relatively steady presence on the radio with songs from Led Zeppelin, his solo releases rarely received the kind of treatment afforded like some other high-profile solo artists coming out of big bands. There may be reasons for this, but it's unfortunate, because as Nine Lives makes clear Robert Plant has been more consistent and consistently interesting than either. As tightly as the ghost of his former band has held him, Robert Plant has succeeded in charting an original course.
Not all has aged well, of course, but what's astonishing is just how much of this stuff still holds up. 1982's Pictures at Eleven and 1983's The Principle of Moments are albums very much of their time, but the songs and performances transcend their production enough to overcome this. The years have not been as kind to the Honeydrippers Volume One and 1985's Shaken `N' Stirred, but from 1988's Now and Zen on, he's been on a dissonant, solidly enjoyable tear.
The albums have all been remastered, of course, and bonus tracks added to each, everything sounds great and the remastering is noticed right away. The set also comes with a DVD with 20 of Robert Plant's music videos and an hour long documentary where he talks about his career and each album and why he decided to go solo and what was behind each of his solo albums.
Within the nine CDs, you've got a list of rock radio classics: 29 Palms, Big Log, Burning Down One Side, In the Mood, Little by Little, Pledge Pin, Sea of Love, Shine it All Around, Tall Cool One, Tie Dye on the Highway and more. Along with the 85 old tunes, you've got 25 bonus cuts, live recordings and remixes peppered with a few so-so leftovers and demos.
You've got an eye-catching packaging and a 60-page color book containing more biographical data, plus an album-by-album chronicle. It is exhaustive. And exhausting.
This set is for fans of Robert Plant's solo work and not that of Led Zeppelin as they are very different.
The only question you need to answer is how much Robert Plant do you really need?

"When Your Life Was Low," one of this album's four writing collaborations between former Crusaders keyboardist Joe Sample and pop's hack-for-hire Will Jennings, is typical of this CD's low aim and artistic laziness. The vague expression of friendship in "Life," voiced listlessly by the technically adept but boring Lalah Hathaway, is perfect for the office-ready smooth-jazz radio format and little else. Hathaway's appearances on 7 of The Song Lives On's 11 cuts are a blessing only in that they break up the monotony of Sample's in-one-ear-and-out-the-other noodlings; her extremely unnecessary version of "Fever" and a dull-edged remake of the Crusaders/Randy Crawford classic "Street Life" are résumé fodder and little else. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
