Health & Happiness Shows [Live]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
In 1949, 26-year old Hank Williams struck a deal with the makers of Hadacol to sponsor his first syndicated radio series. Without it and these two-CD transcriptions of music and between-song prattle, we might never have heard what he was like in his molassified, hayseed ("if the good Lord's willin' and the creek don't rise") glory. Williams was a master of simplicity, both in his writing and in his relaxed performance, where his otherworldly voice often snapped and splintered like a dry branch. But aside from letting Miss Audrey, the Nashville Yoko Ono, get up on stage, he was also his own best producer, allowing members of his Drifting Cowboys band to stretch out in small solos and put their stamp on an entire era. "Play it like you mean it, boys," he always said. Then, as now, authenticity sells. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Great practice.......2007-05-04

I am so happy I found this cd! I started doing yoga at the gym about a month ago, but quickly found myself wanting something I could do anywhere, on the beach, in the woods, ect. I first bought Tracy Rich's Yoga Anywhere and was hugely disapointed as it was way too easy and could only be done in your home, not outside as she she asks you to use chairs, doorways, kitchen sinks ect.

This cd was my second try and I feel I got it right this time. The practice is challenging to me as a beginner which I like, I want to be able to practice and work on improving. I like that there are poses in this cd that I cannot already do. I feel like I've gotten a great workout after using this cd, one that comes close to actually going to class.

It will take some time of looking at the poses and coordinating the practice to know what she is telling me to do, but after a few times more of listening and looking I should have a great portable practice that I can do anywhere, anytime.

I am bringing this to Belize with me next month for the month so I can still do yoga even though I won't be able to make it to class. Thank you Shiva Rae!

5 out of 5 stars awsome.......2006-12-21

I've had this CD set for about a year and a half now. It is one of the best investments I have made in my yoga practice. $20 is nothing for what this CD offers. Doing yoga at home to this CD, using combinations of various tracks has brought my yoga practice to a higher level. I notice it when I go to actual classes. It's nice to have the private space of one's home to work on poses. It's also nice to have guidance. So often I tell myself I'll just do the CD for 45 minutes. Next thing I know, it's an hour and 45 minutes later and I've just had a killer yoga session, feeling so much better than when I started. Shiva Rea has a great voice, great pacing, great music, great thoughts to inspire yoga practice, etc. This is a great way to save money on yoga classes. You can still go to class, just less often. I love that this is a CD rather than a DVD/video. I have no desire to do yoga with the TV on. Light some candles, set up your sacred yoga space, and get yoga-fied at home. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars soothing, rejuvinating, challenging.......2006-07-03

For anyone who craves a thorough yoga workout, but is still interested in a moderate and soothing journey, this is for you. Shiva's instructions are well-detailed and easy to follow. If you don't know the sanskrit names for the poses, you will begin to learn quite a few of them with this cd. There is both a solar practice cd and a lunar practice cd. The solar practice is energizing and challenging, while the lunar is perfect for unwinding after a stressful day at work. I highly recommend this for more intermediate practitioners. It is also a good challenge for the adventurous beginner as well. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Shiva.......2006-03-26

Shiva Rea's "Yoga Sanctuary: A Guided Hatha Yoga Practice" is fantastic for yoga on the go. This vocally guided practice is well rounded out from beginning to end. The spotlight review nicely covers every aspect of each track, so I won't repeat that. I really like that it suggests track sequences for sessions ranging from 20 minutes to about 60 minutes. Shiva dictates in her classic soothing voice with it's impeccable timing making transitions from pose to pose as smooth as can be. You will love how you feel after you've done this!

As with any at-home yoga video, it's essential that you are familiar with naming of postures, otherwise you can really injure yourself. With that said, I recommend this for intermediate level and up. If you're a Shiva fan, you will enjoy this great portable yoga work-out.

3 out of 5 stars More conscientious instruction required.......2006-03-20

While I like the basic idea of this CD set, it seems to be appropriate only for people who don't really require much instruction or advance warning about which pose to move into. The transitions between poses are sometimes very awkward, occasionally because there isn't enough time to move into the pose, at other times because Ms Rea does not coordinate her instructions for body movement well with breathing, and finally at other times because the pose to be moved into is ambiguously described so that it just isn't clear where to put what part of the body where.

Those who may wish to compensate that fact by looking at the poses pictured in the poster included with the CD will find that several transitional stages of a pose or flow sequence are simply not pictured. So if you are new to vinyasa yoga, you will probably find yourself feeling inadequately guided. In addition to the audio description and the photo collage sometimes wanting, it is apparent that Ms Rea does not take care to ensure that both sides of the body are worked for an equal length of time. There is a clear emphasis on the right side of the body, which leaves the afterimpression that the body has been given rather lopsided attention during the workout.

Given all these limitations, my conclusion is that there are other, more effective home yoga practices on the market now. This practice is alright, but only alright, for people who are not new to yoga and preferably who have already had an introduction into vinyasa yoga somewhere else.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Pregnancy Relaxation CD.......2007-04-11

I bought this CD to practice relaxation in order to prepare for a natural childbirth. It was toward the end of my pregnancy but I listened to it almost daily and really enjoyed it. It is calm, not annoying, and I liked the verbal imagery the lady uses. I was indeed able to have a natural childbirth. It is definitely worth getting during pregnancy. I plan on using it in the future and even think I'll use it right now with my newborn when I'm feeling a little overwhelmed. Great CD.

5 out of 5 stars A soon-to-be Mother's MUST!!.......2007-02-16

I was given this CD as a gift, and I call it my "God-sent gift" because it helped me overcome all of the "fears" I had about becoming a new Mommy. The meditations helped me focus on my breathing, and I remembered the music and visualizations as I was going through labor. When my baby was very young, she hated travelling in the car...I play Heartstrings and it calms her (and I) down immediately!!

5 out of 5 stars good for bedrest.......2007-01-08

I bought this cd for my wife because the doctor put her on bedrest and said she needed to reduce stress. She says it was a great support for a difficult pregnancy.

5 out of 5 stars Very relaxing.......2006-06-03

This program has saved my sanity! I've been using these meditations for about 4 weeks and already I can feel a positive effect in my mood and stress level. I didn't know what to expect when I bought it, but after a few days of doing one meditation plus a couple of affirmations every morning and night, I was hooked. The music is pretty and melodic, and the voice is friendly and soothing. When I use this CD I feel like I'm being proactive in the healthy development of my baby. I highly recommend buying this CD and making the committment to yourself to take 5 or 10 minutes out of every day to bond with your baby. It's made my pregnancy experience much happier and less stressful!

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2006-05-13

Using this CD throughout my pregnancy really helped me relax and made it easier to deal with all the stress in my everyday life. The underlying music is really nice - it's not too "new-agey" like a lot of those other guided meditation CDs on the market. Also, the guided visualizations are short enough that you can do one or two a day without having to take too much time out of a busy schedule. I love this CD and recommend it to all my friends who are pregnant or are trying to get pregnant.

4 out of 5 stars The rise and fall of Quiet Riot in a single album.......2006-09-20

THE BAND: Kevin Dubrow (vocals), Carlos Cavazo (guitars), Rudy Sarzo (bass, synthesizer), Frankie Banali (drums & percussion).

THE DISC: (1983) Originally 10 songs clocking in at approximately 41 minutes, this remastered version gives you 2 bonus tracks and almost 52 minutes worth. The bonus tracks: "Danger Zone" (unreleased studio cut), and a live version of "Slick Black Cadillac". Included with the disc is a 10-page booklet containing song titles/credits/times, original artwork and additional black & white photos, a brief 3-page intro, and thank you's. Recorded at The Pasha Music House in Hollywood, CA. Originally released on Pasha's label, this digitally remastered version is on Sony/Portrait/Epic.

COMMENTS: Disco was officially out a few years prior. New Wave was popular. Hard rock was coming back in. To many, American metal was still a question mark in the early 80's. The British/European invasion of heavy metal was in full force (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and the Scorpions to name a few big acts). In 1983 though, bigger albums than Def Leppard's "Pyromania", Motley Crue's "Shout At The Devil", or Iron Maiden's "Piece Of Mind"... was Quiet Riot's "Metal Health". 6+ million units sold and growing. As quickly as "Metal Health" rose (the first metal record to hit #1 on the Billboard album charts), the band fell from grace. DuBrow's antics were fairly well documented (difficult to get along with)... with other bands as well as his own. "Metal Health" was a solid album, and it's still a classic... but, it hasn't stood the test of time as well as any of the other albums mentioned above. For me, Quiet Riot was the definition of "pop" hair metal. "Metal Health" created the standard formula that all successful pop/hair metal bands seemed to follow... 1. Some aggressive hard rocking songs (""Breathless", "Run For Cover", "Love's A Bitch"); a couple of hits ("Metal Health", "Cum On Feel The Noise"), and a power ballad ("Thunderbird"). Quiet Riot's cover version of Slade's "Cum On Feel The Noise" hit #20 on the Billboard charts (#5 on the pop charts), as the title track hit #31. "Slick Black Cadillac" had minor success on the radio as well. Cavazo's "Battle Axe" is a short guitar solo - in the same vein as Eddie Van Halen's "Eruption". A brief history of the players is documented in the disc booklet - Quiet Riot being formed by guitar-god Randy Rhoads and singer DuBrow in the mid 1970's without much success; Rhoads and bassist Sarzo leaving QR to play with now solo Ozzy; Rhoads killed in a plane crash; Sarzo returns with Banali joining on drums and Cavazo on lead guitar. Some truly great songs here - my favorites are the title track, "Don't Want To Let You Go", and "Breathless". The ballad "Thunderbird" (though an ode to Rhoads) is musically weak. The bonus tracks - "Danger Zone" fits right in with the rest of the album (good stuff), but the live "Slick Black Cadillac" is absolutely horrible (sounds like an out-of-breath high school band doing a cover tune). The potential was there to continue (and more albums being released), but Quiet Riot never again achieved the success it had in '83. "Metal Health" is a classic in the "pop" arena of metal (4.5 stars).

4 out of 5 stars The First Metal Album To Go #1!.......2005-12-04

I got this album after seeing the kick ass video for the song Metal Health. I couldn't get enough of it! I still enjoy cranking that metal anthem. Ironically Quiet Riot would achieve great success a few years after guitar legend Randy Rhoads left the band to join Ozzy. New guitarist Carlos Cavazo was no Randy but he could play a good riff or a wailing solo. The big hit off the album was the cover of Slade's Cum On Feel The Noize. It seemed you couldn't turn on MTV without seeing that video. But the album has other good songs like the emotional Love's A Bitch and the Cavazo guitar showcase Battle Axe! Then there is the ballad Thunderbird, apparently written about Randy who died in a plane crash in 1982, and the smooth rocker Breathless. The track Slick Black Cadillac is a decent song from the Randy years and Let's Get Crazy is simple but fun headbanger. The only song I never got into was Don't Wanna Let You Go. Quiet Riot's career would go downhill after the next album but Metal Health is still a good album despite some of the ridicule heaped on it.

4 out of 5 stars BANG YOUR HEAD TO METAL HEALTH.......2005-08-02

WHILE THIS IS A GREAT ALBUM AND I DO REMEMBER WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT BEING 16 YEARS OLD, THE RIOT DONE A EXCELENT JOB OF COVERING SLADE'S HIT "CUM ON FEEL THE NOIZE" FROM 1973 AND THE OTHER SELF PENNED HIT "METAL HEALTH". THERE ARE SOME OTHER GREAT (WELL KNOWN) TRACKS ON HERE AS WELL "LOVES A BITCH" AND "LET'S GET CRAZY". I DO RECOMEND THIS IF YOU DON'T OWN IT BUT, TOO THE UNDERTAKER (ISN'T THERE A WRESTLER CALLED UNDERTAKER)..QUIET RIOT WHILE THEY WERE A PRETTY GOOD BAND, DOESN'T TOUCH THE STATURE OF THE MIGHTY LEPP. AND WHILE THIS ALBUM DID SELL WELL, IT BY NO MEANS OUT SOLD HYSTERIA, SO HOW'S ABOUT A BOTTLE OF WINE WITH YOUR CHEESE. ENOUGH IS SAID

4 out of 5 stars 80s hair metal at its best.......2005-08-01

Metal Health is one of the best 80s hair metal CDs. Good melodies and guitar riffs, nice solo work and good screaming vocals from Kevin Dubrow. I just listened to this over the weekend for the first time in a while and it still holds up. The lyrics are juvenile but that's pretty standard for 80s metal. Sing along to the stupid rhymes, crank it up and bang your head.

      Album Description

"New Health Rock" is a dancy, catchy track that'll have you feeling better the minute those beats kick in. The b-side, "Modern Romance", is an a cappella version of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs' hit, while "The Wrong Way" is a stellar track off of "Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes". Look for them on tour with The Faint this fall.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars Healthy rock.......2005-02-10

TV on the Radio are among the unlikely hit bands, capturing a wider audience than anybody expected. The "New Health Rock" EP is an interesting three songs, albeit not entirely rewarding ones: two are extremely good, but the middle one is a bit of a fizzer.

The title track is a gritty, dancey song that gives a heady twist to typically catchy rock. Wedged in the middle is the well-named "Wrong Way" -- it sounds like it could've been a good song, but that the band never quite figured out what to do in it. Finishing things up is a murky, dark cover of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Modern Romance," complete with zombie vocals and electronic twiddles.

It's always a good sign when a young band experiments with their sound -- it ensures that the fans won't become bored, and the sound won't get stagnant. So it's good that TV on the Radio is stretching their wings into funkier, dancey indierock rather than resting on their laurels.

Not all experiments work. "Wrong Way" tried hard to be a weird experimental song, but it's too loose and meandering. However, the title track and ghostly Yeah Yeah Yeahs covers are excellent samples of TV on the Radio's rock style -- heavy, thick music paired with low growly vocals, almost like chants.

"New Health Rock" isn't a total success, but the first and last songs are definitely worth a listen. Here's hoping TV on the Radio goes off in those directions.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent But Diiferent Follow Up.......2004-11-03

This is an excellent follow up EP. Different than Staring At The Sun, simular writing styles in both music and words but with a lot of funk.

5 out of 5 stars TVOTR can do no wrong in any way ..........2004-10-14

This EP should come packaged with oven mitts for your ears.

The leading track "New Health Rock" captures a live feeling lacking on previous efforts. An exciting direction for their music to take them in, and I suspect it's an offshoot of their touring ... something a bit more vital in their performance ... captures a feeling of somethng happening, than a recording of something that happened. This first track has cycled in my player for the last hour.

"Modern Romance" provides the direct contrast to the two previous tracks with melodic chanting around a cooling bonfire once you've got the stomping out of your system. The intoxicated buzz is wearing off and we're left in a cathartic trance. A way to walk it off after an 8 minute sprint.

There's no wearing this stuff out. Hard to say "more of the same" for a group constantly trying on new clothes, but it's consistant with all previous work.

This EP is also available from iTunes ... so you can purchase the two new tracks and skip "the wrong way" if you already own their LP.

The Wrong Way is the first track from their LP, Desperate Youth Blood Thirsty Babes. New Health Rock and Modern Romance are more of the same. 5 out of 5 stars Ensemble Galilei's music is lilting, elegant and unexpected!.......2002-11-29

With their soulful playing and artful, sometimes even ephemeral arrangements, the six women of Ensemble Galilei convey a rare depth of emotion. In the insert notes, gamba player Carolyn Ann Surrick describes their creative process: "[In making this recording, we engaged in]...a kind of work that is so focused and intense that years can go by in one afternoon... Extraordinary music-making requires trust... [We] live for the times when the only thing that exists right then is the music--when the instruments are speaking as if we don't exist, and they are having their own conversation." Thank you, Ensemble Galilei, for allowing the rest of us the privilege of coming along for the ride! It's simply delectable. This chamber ensemble, featuring fiddle, harp, gamba, oboe, pipes and percussion, can also be heard on their other Telarc release, "From the Isles to the Courts", and "The Mystic and the Muse: Celebrating 600 Years of Women in Music", on the Dorian label.

        5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2001-01-22

Sheer beauty, as a lover of English music I found this to be one of the most beautiful of all Shakespearean albums. Such harmony, such subtlety, one wishes that the gentle night will never stop.

        4 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2001-01-04

Ensemble Galilei provide some excellent arrangements of English renaissance compositions. I believe that John Playford (English Dancing Master) fans will be particularly satisfied with the renditions presented here. It is very unfortunate that E.G. did not provide more arrangements from such early music sources. Some of E.G.'s own compositions seem very weak and not in the renaissance spirit of the rest of the CD. Nonetheless, this CD is highly recommmended.

5 out of 5 stars It will bring about many gentle nights.......2000-11-22

I found this album to be solid. Very sweet, but not afraid to use percussion which makes it livelier and more fun. I adore the quiet, peacefulness of the music and the flawless execution of these renaissance songs.

        5 out of 5 stars Visualizing Beauty.......2000-08-20

I recently had the good fortune to direct a performance of King Lear--the ENTIRE five acts, in a community theatre, non-profit setting. I used twenty-four fully committed non-actors, who for the love of the ideas, participated in this performance. The first and main challenge that I faced was, how do I go "behind" the words, and invoke the right emotions, etc., to give these actors the range and tools needed for an effective, powerful performance? Critical to this performance was the beauty and brilliance of this recording, which I used throughout the various scenes of the play. This helped the performers tremendously, creating the different tapestries in the mind of the Bard. In short, this work is real genius, that I was so happy that I stumbled across. I am now putting in our performance programs, along with our most heart-felt thanks to E.G., the name of the recording and I have copies from Telarc to sell at each performance!

It's been decades since Jimi Hendrix advised the world that they'd "never hear surf music again." But the Mermen (who take their name from a Hendrix song) not only prove the venerable guitar god wrong, but make a compelling musical argument here that if Hendrix were alive today he might well be sitting in with them on these moody, musically expansive tracks. Just as Jimi was reinventing himself at the time of his death, the Mermen tweak surf-instrumental clichés beyond recognition--that is, when they're not trashing them altogether. Guitarist Jim Thomas's influences range from (of course) Hendrix to Dick Dale, Django Reinhardt, Ravi Shankar, Neil Young, Clarence White, and his own hometown heroes, the Dead Kennedys. Listen closely and you'll hear them all (and more) in a progressive collection that offers a surprise at nearly every turn, whether it's the soaring steel guitar flourishes of "Unto the Resplendent," the sitar colorings of "White Trash Raga," or the spacey Floyd-isms of the 13-minute-plus noise-symphony, "Burn." Like his heroes, Thomas never lets flash block the path of illumination, delivering his rich palette of tones and influences with an ocean-bred sense of grace and destiny. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Album EVER by the Greatest Band EVER.......2006-10-28

I have 1700 cds... I have 900 vinyl.... over the years the culmination of releases may reach over 5,000 but never have I liked a cd so much for so long. I really liked Glorious Lethal Euphoria and their other releases, so I bought this the day it was released. Generally after 6 plus years, some things lose their luster. Not this cd. It has the effect on me of a great drama movie, where one scene makes you sad, another makes you happy, and maybe another makes you want to take on the world. If there ever was a band in a league of their own, it is the Mermen.

4 out of 5 stars Gloriousy rich psychedelia.......2006-03-10

The classic-rock band Mountain once titled a song "Theme from an Imaginary Western," and that's a great description of this CD's contents. It's full of soaring yet tragic, wordless yet eloquent anthems to the promise and heartbreak of the American West. If you liked the Grateful Dead mostly -- or only -- for how their music refracted classic Americana, you'll like this.

The instrumentation shows how far the Mermen have evolved from their surf roots. An acoustic guitar periodically sounds a fat cowboy keynote. Jim Thomas' 6-string electric slices and cries with a sad, Neil Young-style fuzz tone. 12-string electric and pedal steel guitars weave in and out of the mix, and an Indian sarod anchors "White Trash Raga."

For Landlocked Surfer Dudes or Ladylike Sensitive Dancers seeking accompaniment for a Ludicrous Spring Dance, this drippingly psychedelic disc might be just the prescription.

5 out of 5 stars Bitchen and extremely cool.......2001-12-16

No, you don't have to live in Malibu to dig this evolved, surf-inspired experience. You don't have to live in the So Cal sun to totally wig out on these dudes.

"...Health and Happiness..." is near the top of my list. It's like Dick Dale meets the Bunnymen with a dollop of Vibratron and a couple shots of head swirling psycho-reverb. First listening is cool and it just gets better.

5 out of 5 stars Short But Sweet Praise.......2001-08-29

The other customer reviews already do an excellent job of extolling the virtues of this extraordinary album. But I'll add that it gets better ever time I listen to it. The variety of styles and sheer originality make this one disc that holds up extremely well to repeated listening. Oh, all of my surfing buddies seem to feel the same way about this disc as I do. :)

5 out of 5 stars Chest high and trippin' today.......2001-08-02

Without a doubt, the perfect soundtrack to a pre- go-out session where there is an ocean and there are surfable waves.

Probably not too shabby elsewhere, either!!
