5 out of 5 stars My first TVZ album should be yours too.......2003-02-10

The live performances on this album came towards the end of Townes' career. The audiences are enthusiastic, the performer responds. Listen to Blaze's Blues. What a show, with Townes rip-snortin drunk playing the acoustic like a bulldozer.

Every song on this album is fantastic, it's an album that you can listen to from start to finish. Townes definitely deserves accolades like artists including Bob Dylan, Frank Black, and . The songs are often dark.

Take the song Marie, about a man down on his luck, no job, and kicked out of the homeless shelter. But he's got his Marie. And she's got his son, inside of her. And then Marie is dead. He leaves her beside the railroad tracks, and knows Marie would understand that he has to be on his way.

I can't recommend this album enough. You should buy it.

5 out of 5 stars sorry, Ernest Boehm.......2005-12-22

you've no clue about what 'two girls' is about but your other assessment of the album is well understood if not well said.

said track is about two different types of lovers (one you love with all your heart and one you do don't really know). the rest of the cd is similarly packed with twisted, but realistic stories, recorded live throughout europe. sound quality is really good, it's just mr. van zandt and his guitar; it's about an hour long. my first TVZ cd, still among my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars A great recording of this quality is too far abnormal.......2000-07-05

For all the lovers of very main stream music this is not for you. This CD is a abnormal, in its themes and subjects and that is what makes it great.

My favorite songs on this CD are Two Girls about two daughters with extreme differences and how it effects a father, old shep is great song about a dog so sad that during the recording Townes's has to stop because he has hard time singing it. There a cover of the Stones Dead Flowers that rivals the orginal. I have heard so few songs as honest and complete in theme as WAting Around To Die. This rich music is so accoustic, so bluesy, so wonderously sad yet up lifting. Abnormal does not fit into a catogory. Yes this is an abnormal, but most treasures are.

5 out of 5 stars Bob Dylan Wishes.......1999-12-12

This was the first cd I got by Van Zandt. I was feeling down that night. One of those nights when you sit by the stereo with a bottle of red wine and lose yourself in your world; the world no one else can touch. With this album, Van Zandt lets you into his world. I'm a huge folk music fan, but had only heard of Van Zandt. When I got this album that night, it fit my mood like a perfect shoe. He writes dark, sad, introspective songs that are so real it's as if he pulled then out of Appalachian soil. On "Abnormal," those qualities reach a pinnacle. I dare say he never released an album as morbid, yet powerful as "Abnormal." It helped me get through that night and many otherlike it. It offers stunning, haunting versions of "Lung," "Dollar Bill Blues," "Waitin' around To Die," "A Song For," and plenty of other classics-live. It has always amazed me to hear the power one man and his guitar can possess. Since buying this album, I've bought many other Van Zandt recordings, and this remains one of my favorites. It was released just around his death. I believe this was the last live album, or album of any kind, that he released. It's one of his best, no doubt. If you are a new fan or seasoned Van Zandt lover, this is for you. The album's first track, a cover of the legendary song of the folk circle, "Coo-Coo," pulls you right into the bleak, lonely, drunken wasteland in which he lived. But somehow, he mixes those flavors into one masterful piece of work. Many reviewers have described van Zandt as a more down to earth Leonard Cohen. That is as true as could be, and on "Abnormal," there is just no denying the comparison. Buy this album, and prepare to be taken into a new universe.

5 out of 5 stars Representing the "Noir" Side of Reality.......2003-02-22

To Mr. Powers: congratulations! Abnormals Anonymous is an excellent release that displays the Kid's enormous song-writing talent and manages to evoke numerous moods (though none of them seem genuinely happy). The sound itself is a bit of a post-punkish alternative with elements of blues, cabaret jazz, and folk as well as rock, all which come together to paint a noirish portrait of the gloomier, and disturbingly humorous, aspects of life. The only genuinely weak song is "Body and Soul"; it sounds almost entirely like a standard pop rock song. The rest of the tracks display a sound that is rooted in bands that Kid Congo Powers had been involved with (the Gun Club, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds). However, even with comparisons to bands like the Bad Seeds, Powers and Sally Norvell create beautiful sonic landscapes that take the listener to a land of gloomy skies and murky lounges with just enough tongue-in-cheek touches to inform listeners that the joke is on them. Stand out tracks include the excellent bluesy cover of Jeffrey Lee Pierce's "She's Like Heroin to Me," the powerful "Brother Jack," the frantic "Johnny in the Boudoir," and the chilling "Last Breath," which features some excellent baritone crooning from Powers as well as the passionate vocal work of Norvell. A quality release, if nothing else. You have surpassed your predecessors, Kid; congrats.

5 out of 5 stars Kid Congo's atmospheric nadir.......2002-10-17

A superb album combining Kid Congo's dark guitar stylings (a la Gun Club and Nick Cave) with Sally Jesse Norvell's noirish cabaret singing. This is a beautiful, dark, melancholy album that is a perfect late night listen. It's become stronger and more compelling over time.

Among my all time favorite slabs.

4 out of 5 stars Too little Kid.......2002-03-08

Kid Congo Powers is a genius on the guitar, a lovely guy, and a stylish cat! Unfortunately, his presence on this CD is not as perceptible as it should be. However, it is still a great listen. Can't wait until he releases that album he recorded in Mexico with Khan. And Kid, if you're reading this, COME BACK TO DUBLIN SOON.

2 out of 5 stars mediocre music for bad people.......2000-07-11

There's nothing horrible about this album, but it's not particularly remarkable, either. The songwriting isn't very sharp, and the lyrics come off as cheesy high school imitations of sleazy songs written by the likes of Nick Cave, Firewater, The Cramps, etc. Seems it's best to leave such debauched tales to the true masters...

3 out of 5 stars Tom Waits meets the Gun Club?.......2000-06-30

Kid Congo Powers and Sally Norvell got together and made a great drinking record. Stories like Tom Waits, swampy R&B sensibilities of Jeffrey Lee Pearce, and boy-girl harmonies straight out of the X canon yield a strong set of songs that bear repeat listening well. Perfect for a late-night staring out a window and regretting the past.

2 out of 5 stars Future One Hit Wonder.......2004-06-19

I Recieved this CD as a gift for Christmas about 2 Years ago, Thank God, And i would have to write this group down as a future one hit wonder, ot two hit wonder, the only two good songs are the original Supersexworld, and Another miracle, and even supersexworld, is getting annoying now, i don't think muchmusic did Another Miracle enough justice by not playing it enough, its not that i didn't give the CD a chance, i listened to it alot to try and turn myself on to it(no pun intended) but its just so hard to like something that i couldn't bear listening to, its torture, i'd rather watch Gigli then listen to some distarous songs like My heart belongs to Daddy, and Paper Thin, the sad thing is most songs are at least 4 minutes, i recommend you don't buy this CD, it'll save you your 20$

5 out of 5 stars Canadian No Doubt.......2003-12-21

This is what I would consider to be the Canadian version of No Doubt. These guys did not get the credit that they deserved with the lead single: Supersexworld. It was a brilliant dancefloor piece but it was not indicative of what the band was. This CD has brilliant jazz, reggae, dance, hip hop songs, etc. You name it, they do it all and they do it like pros.

I guess ultimately that that it the problem with this band. They are talented in not just one but all genres of music and cannot be pigeon-holed. If anyone has any taste in music, they will enjoy this CD.

    4 out of 5 stars excellent.......2003-01-26

i think this cd is an excellent cd...
first i recomend listening to it, before buying it.
everyones likes in music will be different.

    4 out of 5 stars Pop coloré.......2002-10-25

Quelques traces de jazz ajoutent des couleurs à l'album, particulièrement avec 'I'm Still In Love With You', véritable chanson à stip-tease, et 'My Heart Belongs To Daddy', rendue populaire par Marilyn Monroe.
