2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

5 out of 5 stars Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11

I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

5 out of 5 stars Blue Highway.......2007-01-27

This is a terrific compilation of sides recorded by Blue Highway that appeared on 3 previous Rebel CDs (IT'S A LONG, LONG ROAD; MIDNIGHT STORM; and WIND TO THE WEST), all from the mid-late 1990s. Shawn Lane and Wayne Taylor share vocal leads, and their high-pitched stylings are attractive though not particularly powerful. The groups material is very appealing: songs such as HE WALKED ALL THE WAY HOME (inspired by the book/movie COLD MOUNTAIN perhaps?) and BEFORE THE COLD WIND BLOWS are interesting ballads that tell compelling stories. THE ROUNDER is about Jesse James and it and BETWEEN THE ROWS end abruptly with starltling (and good) effect. LONESOME PINE has a beautiful and haunting minor C section that is a highlight of the CD. There are also a couple of instrumentals included which reflect older mountain string band influences. This is a most enjoyable CD that makes this listener eager to check out the group's earlier releases in full.

"Lonesome Pine" is a collection of 3-5 cuts apiece from three Blue Highway albums on the Rebel label: It's A Long, Long Road (1995), Wind To The West (1996), Midnight Storm (1998). So this compilation of previously released material is a fine "Best of" retrospective for the band from Johnson City, Tennessee that performed its first gig on New Year's Eve in 1994. It's great to see internationally-renowned bluegrass groups as prolific as Blue Highway releasing projects with their best hits. Blue Highway's original lineup included Tim Stafford (guitar), Wayne Taylor (bass), Shawn Lane (mandolin/fiddle), Tony Brown (banjo/fiddle), and Rob Ickes (dobro). Brown doesn't appear on this album, as Jason Burleson took his place and plays banjo or mandolin on these cuts. In 1996, Blue Highway won IBMA awards for "Emerging Artist of the Year" and "Album of the Year" (for "It's a Long Long Road"). In 1997, they won the IBMA award for "Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year" for the song "God Moves in a Windstorm." I wish that song would've been included in this set of hits. In 1998, Burleson left the band and was replaced by Tom Adams who also doesn't appear in any of these cuts. Burleson returned to the band two years later.

Over the years, Blue Highway has carved out their own niche in bluegrass. Their musical vision has always incorporated accessible melodies, bright lyricism, and interesting dynamics. They can't go wrong with songs like "Blue Ridge Mountain Girl." Taylor's, Stafford's and Lane's songwriting abilities are showcased. Ickes and Burleson have also penned some groovy instrumentals, but none are included in this set. Instead, they choose the old-time "Cold Frost Morn" and rootsy "Flannery's Dream" for the instrumental offerings here. The band has a side with considerable emotional depth, with moving songs like "Some Day" and "Before the Cold Wind Blows." The former, arranged a cappella, shows clearly how splendid their vocalizing can be. The latter, along with the title cut, are both Wayne Taylor originals and are among the band's most requested numbers. Since this CD features previously released material, I wish that the producers would have given us just a bit more than a 43-minute set. I would have lobbied for inclusion of some other originals such as Taylor's "Keen Mountain Prison" and Stafford's "Find Me Out on a Mountain Top." Being from Oregon, I've always liked Stafford's song called "Clear Cut," another hit that isn't included here. Jack Tottle has contributed a fair amount of material to Blue Highway's repertoire, and I was glad that they included one of his to close the album.

No slouches on their instruments, the guys in the band are award winners. All told, they've released 6 albums, been nominated for a Grammy, topped the Bluegrass Unlimited chart, won a Dove Award and 11 IBMA awards (either as a band or individually). Blue Highway boasts an impressive track record as a contemporary bluegrass band. "Lonesome Pine" only tells part of the story with its documentation of the wave they rode in that time period from 1995-1998. All three of the individual albums sampled were given my highest marks in the past. However, being a compilation, I'm giving this CD a "B+" only because I simply think it should have included about 17 more minutes of their fine music. "Lonesome Pine" is a very good sampler and great introduction to their music. This 13-track reasonably-priced sampler could very well lead you to purchase all three of the albums from which the cuts are taken. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars Josh Stikes Gold with this Highway..........2004-06-19

Josh is a very talented young man. I really like this CD...every song is great! If you enjoy Bluegrass, then you
need to have this CD in your collection.
He also has another CD, "Now That Your're Gone" and that is a good effort as well. If you buy these two CD's you will get a feel for where Josh is going...and it will be a long ride.
He gives me pride to know that Bluegrass is in good hands.

    5 out of 5 stars Broadly-appealing personalized bluegrass sound.......2004-06-17

One of the "new generation" of young hot bluegrass pickers and smooth singers, Josh Williams, from Kentucky, formed his first band in 1990 at age ten. He then received national recognition as a young bluegrass prodigy when he appeared in the 1993 IBMA Awards Show as part of a "youth in bluegrass" band. He recorded his first album in 1991, played with The Young Acoustic All-Stars (1994-98), Hyperdrive (1998), and The Special Consensus (since 2000). His stellar debut album called "Now That You're Gone," (Pinecastle PRC-1115) established Josh's name as a shining star on multiple instruments, as well as a great singing and songwriting talent. Josh primarily sticks to guitar and mandolin, but he also serves up some tasty mandola licks on "The Cave." Besides lead vocals, he also sings some baritone and low tenor harmonies. If you don't think this young man can pick with a vengeance, one need only listen to his jaw-dropping performance on his self-penned "Golden Pond Getaway."

This is another first-rate production of contemporary bluegrass and includes some excellent accompaniment from Don Rigsby, J.D. Crowe, Missy Raines, Ron Stewart, Randy Kohrs, Kristin Scott Benson, Otis Dillon, Dwight McCall and Jared Ribble. This album also shines in its choice of material.
Besides a couple from Josh ("Down Another Lonesome Highway" and the instrumental "Golden Pond Getaway"), some of the other songs were penned by outstanding songwriters such as Tom T. and Dixie Hall, Jim Eanes, Becky Buller, and Ronnie Stewart. Williams is equally comfortable with older material (like "The Legend of the Johnson Boys" and "Don't Stop Now") as he is with newer offerings like "Ol' Brown Suitcase" and "Sweet Forgiveness" and "Mordecai." Songwriters Ron Spears and Charlie Edsall penned the album's closer, "Cold Virginia Rain," that is also getting some excellent airplay as a result of its inclusion on Prime Cuts of Bluegrass' volume 69.

Fantastic bluegrass music albums like this one must have a number of things to succeed. Josh Williams is a singularly impressive talent, but he also runs with a crowd of superior instrumentalists who get plenty of room to strut their musicianship here. Good songs, arranged with consummate care, are another integral element for success. Young, creative, and talented, Josh Williams is a tremendous and virtuosic force in the bluegrass community. His broadly-appealing personalized sound shows that bluegrass music is in good hands and has a bright future. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

This single snipes a well needed pot shot at all those "music critics" that reckon Shane MacGowan is a spent musical force. This raspy love song is effortlessy magestic and every time I hear it I wanna go out an hug the nearest passerby. The refrain of "IIIIIIIIII love you sooooooo" comes from Shanes bowels and the spanish guitar complements the ghostly sad story that anyone who has loved and lost knows. If you're curious to know what the fuss is about Shane MacGowan, buy this single , but , be warned if you buy one piece of his music you wont rest until you have everything he has ever written.

Shane , ahah , a ahah love you sow wo wo ......!

5 out of 5 stars MacGowan Magic once again!.......1999-07-05

One of lord Shane's best tunes, a bittersweet ballad where the great lad rasps out lyrics of rejection and loneliness. absoloutly stunning. mind you, i would say that. MacGowan is my hero.
