After a big but brief run in the late '90s with hits like "Strawberry Wine," Deana Carter faded back into the woodwork. But after divorce from both husband and record label she has bounced back admirably with this provocative, if slightly uneven, album full of quirky lyrics and some irresistible melodies. The album opens with its flaky pop-country title track that's so chock full of calculated down-home imagery it sounds like it was written for a truck commercial. Fortunately it's pretty much uphill from there. On stand-out songs like the vitriolic "Liar," the troubled "You and Tequila," and the comic "Girls' Night" Carter is as intriguing and cutely idiosyncratic as ever. --Bob Allen

4 out of 5 stars Fine pop from former country chart-topper.......2006-12-13

Carter has never seemed comfortable with the lightning bolt of country music stardom that accompanied her debut release, "Did I Shave My Legs For This?" Though her contributions to that album showed off her genetically inherited country music lineage, her follow-up LPs have played more to her childhood pop and rock influences. Her second album, 1998's "Everything's Gonna Be Alright," was broader and earthier, with plenty of Southern Rock influences that didn't impress country radio, and led to her departure from Capitol.

A 2001 one-off for Rounder found the singer dueting with her father (guitarist Fred Carter, Jr.) on a lovely, stripped-down set of Christmas songs, and in 2003 she resurfaced on Arista for this slick CD that pushes even further towards highly-produced pop. Listeners who insist on viewing Carter as a Country artist - even of the contemporary Nashville stripe - are likely to be disappointed. The innocence that made "Strawberry Wine" a hit is still to be heard in Carter's Southern voice, but the songs (all written or co-written by Carter) and production are contemporary pop, verging on bubblegum.

Her third release isn't nearly as consistent as her first two. The album's first single, "No Limit," and the lead-off title-track are ear-candy of the first-order, with deftly doubled vocals, arena-sized electric guitars and memorable melodic hooks. Carter sings of American pleasures so stereotyped that, much like their recitation in a Beach Boys song, they fly past clichéd to touching. Dan Huff's production is polished, but with interesting touches such as the dischordant electric guitar and strummed introducing "Me and the Radio."

The social commentary of "Cover of a Magazine" provides an ironic counterpoint to the Sixteen Magazine-styled CD art, and Carter provides a sweet, girlish balance to Dwight Yoakam's emotional wail on their co-written "Waiting." The power-pop "Liar" features memorable sunshine-pop touches, and "Goodbye Train" has the earthy lyrical and vocal hallmarks of its co-writer, Matraca Berg. The frenetic modern-rock production of the closer, "Girls Night Out," can't disguise its pale rhythmic imitation of Jim Carroll's "People Who Died," with half-baked lyrics and a repetitive chorus that doesn't really bear repeating.

Despite the pop potential of this release, Carter's been pigeonholed as a Nashville artist, and little here was going to fly high on country radio. It's a shame, because there's some excellent adult pop here, with a freshness and energy not found often in either L.A. or New York. [©2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

1 out of 5 stars dont waste your time.......2005-01-30

this cd is a waste of time. i think that almost anything is a better choice. shallow songs and a weak voice - - really, there is nothing there!

    4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2004-02-13

This album was released in March 2003. Beforehand, Deana Carter had just signed with Arista Records. This would be her first, and only album with them. She was dropped a few months after the release of this album. This is not her best album, not as strong really as her first two albums, but it has it's charms. "There's No Limit" is a great song, obvious choice for first single. It's catchy, and great guitar hook. The title track was the second single, didn't do nearly as well as the first (which didn't really do that great either). The song selection is not the best on this album, but there's some great songs. "Eddie" is a fun uptempo summertime type song. "Wildflower" and "Me and The Radio" are nice ballads. My favorite song is "Goodbye Train" which would have been a good single. "Liar" and "Girls Night Out" are not favorites of mine, and seem out of place. The album is a lot more pop than her first two, but there's still traces of country here and there. Overall, not her best, but still worth looking into.

    5 out of 5 stars I love Deana's Music.......2003-12-26

This cd shows that Deana still has it! I'm just a girl is fresh, fun and has something for everyone. From the You and Tequila ballad of a lonely frustrated heart to the sentimental I'm Just a Girl anybody will love this cd!

    2 out of 5 stars What Happened?.......2003-12-10

I loved Deana Carter's last 2 CD's, and was excited to get "I'm Just a Girl", but...what happened? The songs are just flat out disappointing, except for There's No Limit. No surprise that No Limit was the radio single released to hype the CD before it became available. But nothing else on the album sounds like There's No Limit. The first song, "I'm Just a Girl", is okay - but pretty bubblegum poppish and she keeps singing about a back seat in a Corvette - doesn't exist! (Just a mild annoyance.) The third track, "You and Tequila" is a downer, but Matraca Berg has songwriting credit here so it's good. The album falls apart after the first 3 songs. Some of it is truly unbearable ("Girls Night Out") but most is just forgettable. Hope her next effort is back up to speed.

14 songs - 14 5 star rated. Truely a fine CD. Sung as only Mary Duff can.

    5 out of 5 stars Country Gold.......2005-07-27

If you like old country music you will want this CD in your collection. Mary Duff can perform almost any style of music with amazing accuracy, with respect to sounding so close to the original artist. The following 4 samples from her country album will emphasize what I am referring to. "Walking After Midnight"(Patsy Cline), "Rose Garden" - (Lynn Anderson), "Coal Miner's Daughter - (Loretta Lynn), "Making Believe" - (Kitty Wells). Her clear powerful vocals certainly do justice to this excellent collection. Since it is an import CD and being a single it is quite pricey. If you like old country music or if you like Mary Duff's music you will not be disappointed with this collection. I highly recommend it.

    An outstanding voice.
Very good, the very best in country singing.

5 out of 5 stars Back to her roots.......2005-03-03

Long-standing fans will know that country songs were the mainstay of Mary's early albums, but that she later included a lot more pop songs in her repertoire. Now Mary has returned to her roots by recording this album of country classics.

The songs, especially the first half of the album, are familiar to all British and Irish fans of traditional country music, beginning with Take me home country roads, the John Denver song that Olivia Newton John had a British top twenty hit with.

There are also covers of songs originally made famous by Loretta Lynn (Coal miner's daughter), Crystal Gayle (Talking in your sleep), Lynn Anderson (Rose garden), Billie Jo Spears (57 Chevrolet), Patsy Cline (Walking after midnight), Emmylou Harris (To Daddy - written by Dolly Parton), Kitty Wells (Making believe - also covered by Emmylou) and Tammy Wynette (Stand by your man) among them.

It may at first seem that Where the boys are (Connie Francis) is out of place, but Connie recorded plenty of country songs and this song sits comfortably alongside all the other songs here.

Making plans, a new duet with Daniel O'Donnell, was originally written and recorded by Johnny Russell and has been recorded by many country singers down the years. It is likely that Mary was inspired by one of Dolly's covers of the song. Dolly recorded a duet version with Porter Wagoner but later re-recorded it with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou for one of their Trio albums.

I like all Mary's music but I'm glad that she has returned to her roots. This may not be the most imaginative set of songs - so many have been covered countless times - but these are the songs that Mary was raised on and she clearly still loves them.

            5 out of 5 stars A Country Girl....But What a Singer!!.......2006-07-14

I'm a great fan of Mary Duff's, if you haven't discovered her singing, this is a collecion of some of her country songs, as well as some from the 50's. She excells on Rose Garden (a standard in her concerts), and IMHO she outsings Tammy on "Stand by Your Man"...I was amazed the first time I heard her sing that one! She proves her versatility with "Where the Boys Are" and "57 Chevrolet" and I particularly like her version of "Take Me Home Country Roads". Her voice is pure and fresh, like the country girl she is....from the Co. Meath in Ireland. She is true to her country roots and sings from her heart on every selection. If you ever get a chance to see her in concert, it's a priceless experience. She shines!! And she is gracious and warm, staying to meet and greet her fans after the concert. A true lady, whether she singing country, pop, or oldies. I highly recommend getting The Ultimate Collection and When Your Old Wedding Ring Was New, as well as The Best of. This Irish girl excells at any song she tackles!! I don't think you'll be disappointed. Just check the titles on the CDs, some are duplicated on other CDs. For instance, if you get When Your Old Wedding Ring was New, it has most of the songs on Time After Time. She's also featured on many of Daniel O'Donnell's CDs, and he's a great Irish singer as well.

            5 out of 5 stars Simply Great.......2005-07-24

Mary Duff does a wonderful job on all the titles in this album- if you did not know she was from Ireland, you would think she was from the South here in the good old USA- If you like County music, this is well worth buying.
