Vince Gill Sings My Heart.......2005-07-29
Diverse, Well Written - Appeals to Country & Mainstream Fans.......2004-11-10
By no means do I consider myself a Country Music expert. The nice thing about "High Lonesome Sound" is that I believe it caters to a fan like myself that may not be deep into Country Music, but can appreciate many of the elements Country Music can bring to the table. While Gill's Country Music could be directed to a more casual fan like myself, I think Gill does an admirable job at addressing the fan who is deeper when it comes to the Country Music genre. Vince Gill also isn't afraid to explore some different directions - and I think this goes a long way for helping this become more appealing to the mainstream fan.
Gill assembles a nice cast of studio musicians to help him on this effort. The most noteable musician is Leland Sklar on Bass. Sklar is best known for being a part of Phil Collins "Serious" band. He was the long hair, long bearded bass player. Sklar does an admirable job on Bass on this collection. There are also some noteable vocalists that help Gill out. Patty Loveless does harmony vocals on "Given More Time" while Shelby Lynne lends vocals on the tune "You and You Alone". Lynne's vocals really connect well with Gill and I wish they would do more work together. Other vocalists, Jeff White and Kim Richey lend some terrific background vocals on multiple tracks.
The opening track is "One Dance With You". When you listen to "One Dance with You", there immediately is a feeling for a country sound. However, there almost is a Doo-Wop-ish type of theme to this song. This Doo Wop-ish theme can be heard in the melody as well as some of the names that are in the lyrics ("Peggy Sue", "Mary Lou", etc). This is a very nice track and appealed to a casual fan like myself.
The title track "High Lonesome Sound" appears on the collection twice. This is a very Country sounding tune that is a very catchy tune. This song is the second track and the last track. The difference is the latter track has Alison Krauss and Union Station helping out with this song. You will hear a stronger fiddle element on the latter track that will give it a much more of a "Dixie Music" feel to it. Alison Krauss plays fiddle on that track and also lends background vocals to both of the tracks. I find the earlier track is the one that will appeal to a more mainstream fan, but the latter track isn't bad either.
The most popular track is the ballad "Pretty Little Adriana". This is definitely a cross-over track. Although it does sound more Pop/Adult Contemporary-ish - the gentle melodies and powerful vocals of this song I still think remain true to the Gill's Country Music Roots.
Another song where Gill does things a bit different is the song "Down to New Orleans". While Gill explored a Dixie sound on the latter version of "High Lonesome Sound", Gill integrates some Jazz and Blues sounding elements into a definite "New Orleans" feel of a song. Once again, Gill doesn't abandon his Country Music Roots and the end result is another great product.
Gill also proves he can be an outstanding storyteller. This is shown on the track "Jenny Dreamed Of Trains". This is an oustanding written song by both Vince Gill and Guy C. Clark. A lot of this song reminds me of Dan Fogelberg. It has a Dan Fogelberg-like soft piano introduction for about one minute. The song then proceeds to be a story in which he tells the story of a girl named Jenny who had a love of trains and then deals with the decline of the railroads in the U.S.. Another song in which Gill tells a nice story is "Given More Time" in which Gill portrays himself as a Working Man trying to balance time with his family. The song "Worlds Apart" is also very well written and deals with a couple going through empty nest syndrome and starting to question the love between them. There is a pause a little after 4 minutes into the song - giving it a very powerful effect.
Another good track that is very enjoyable is "A Little More Love" is another example of a Country Music song that appealed to a mainstream fan like myself.
The liner notes do contain all of the lyrics to all of the tunes. They do a nice job at lining up the studio musician credits to each song. This album pretty much surprised me. I originally wanted it for the song "Pretty Little Adriana", but I ended up discovering so much more. I especially got hooked on the title track. I also discovered what a diverse musician and talent that Vince Gill is. I think this is the perfect album to introduce yourself to Vince Gill and I think Gill fans will not be disappointed with this collection. I'd recommend adding it to your collection.
Maintaining the expected quality.......2004-06-10
Perhaps the strangest song is Jenny dreamed of trains, about a girl living near a deserted railroad. I wonder what inspired Vince to write this song, which was covered by John Denver for his train song album, All aboard.
Two versions of the up-tempo title track are included, both with Vince singing lead and Alison Krauss sing harmony but with one featuring Alison Krauss's band, Union Station, giving the song a bluegrass treatment. Apart from Alison, other harmony singers featured on the album include Kim Richey (A little more love), Patty Loveless (Given more time) and Shelby Lynne (You and you alone).
Other outstanding songs include Pretty little Adriana and Down in New Orleans, but every song here is worth hearing.
While I don't regard this as Vince's best album (my favorite is When I call your name), it has much to commend it. No self-respecting fan of Vince's music should be without it.

With a voice that could crack the same cement he worked all his adult life, Roscoe Holcomb, along with Dock Boggs, Wade Ward, and Banjo Bill Cornett, was one of the most searing singers and pickers of the Appalachian banjo style. He performed mostly in Holiness Church services and impromptu square dances, and his style was never polished by an extensive professional career. His banjo playing is distinguished by speedy, irregular meter, and seems to mimic his vocal approach (or vice versa). First released in 1965, this John Cohen edited collection includes the well-known traditional cuts "Moonshiner" and "House of the Rising Sun," and is fleshed out by the guitar playing of Mike Seeger. --Roy Francis KastenAlbum Description
The legendary Roscoe Holcomb performs 21 powerful songs shaped by the hard times and conflict between old and new that marked his life in the Kentucky mountains. A hard-hitting singer and banjo-player, he also performs unaccompanied ballads, banjo and harmonica solos, and with a guitar. These recordings from 1961, 1964, and 1974 were previously released on three different Folkways LP records and had a powerful influence on the folk music revival. Accompanied by extensive new notes and photographs by John Cohen. 71 minutes. "Roscoe Holcomb is a true genius." -San Francisco ChronicleCustomer Reviews:
Real Americana.......2007-01-22
A must buy for fans of good music.......2005-08-26
Holcomb's vocals, particularily on the first track, give me goose bumps every time I hear it. His harmonica playing and banjo picking is distinctive and first rate. If you are a fan of older music, bluegrass, blues or country... BUY THIS CD!
Peculiar, Strange, Moving, and Powerful.......2003-07-22
I was wrong, about as wrong as a body could be. A couple of years later, I picked up the recording again and listened to it with care. The peculiar and high-pitched voice grows on you, and the powerful and honest delivery is moving in the most compelling way. I now think that Roscoe Holcomb stands on a par with Blind Willie Johnson (in his time an equally obscure and strange singer) as one of the greatest exponents of American-born and bred music. This recording grows on you. I'm extremely grateful that this legacy of Holcomb's great artistry has been preserved for those of us who did not have the joy of listening to his searing voice and delivery while he still lived.
Roscoe Holcomb: Beautiful Untamed Master.......2003-07-14
After many years of listening to the recordings of Roscoe Holcomb, of letting myself become intimately open to and familiar with them, of brooding upon them, then listening some more, I am convinced (conviction)that the true reason that Roscoe Holcomb has never become widely recognized and acknowleged in America as one of the greatest artists to ever live out some seventy odd years on its soil is not because he spent most of his life in the little backwoods community of Daisy, Kentucky where people have strange, unpleasant accents. Or rather I should say that that is only the apparent reason, the pretext. It is rather because wider American 'culture' can not embrace expression of such depth and intensity of unfiltered feeling, such depth of undecorated honesty, such depth and directness of response to life, such depth of raw, unpretentious beauty, such depth of blazing strength and haunted vulnerability, and such fierceness of unambitious artistic focus, without being intensely confronted by its own utter mediocrity.
American 'culture', which has been reduced to the hustling entertainment of an endless carnival, is tyranically controlled by capitalistic business interests and academic prejudice and pretension (backed by more capitalism). Its dominant characteristic on all levels is manipulation and self-interest. Its pseudo-passion is akin to simple lust. Roscoe Holcomb's genuine passion is a raw response to, and an unpretentious but fiercely focused hunger for, truth. He is a guileless, intelligent, aware, sensitive, gifted Kentucky 'hillbilly' who is far too large in soul to be drawn in by the smug, meretricious banality of American 'culture'. He is a grim and beautiful reminder of what wider America might have been.
As an artist and a man, he is indifferent to the illusions of 'civilized' high life, but he has no illusions about the facts of poverty and want. He is a mature, decent, gifted man trying to walk a truthful path through a bewildering maze, a man burning with life and love and suffering, and passionately confronting death and producing great art in response.
The art of his singing and playing, though clothed in Appalachian style, reaches beyond the conditioned behavior of any historical time-period, it reaches into primal emotion. He reaches into ancient, even primitve, feeling. But he is far from being unsophisticated. I am amazed by the people who claim to admire Holcomb, then submit to the terms of his critics by conceding that he is "unpolished, but...", or some such rot. Holcomb's musical knowledge, his vocal and instrumental ability, and his artistic imagination and insight are highly sophisticated and anyone who can not see this simply can not see Roscoe Holcomb. The fact that Holcomb was born in a setting that afforded him no "education' is utterly trivial and has no bearing on his artistic greatness. When, in his matchless version of LITTLE MAGGIE (UNTAMED SENSE OF CONTROL), he vocally holds that maj. 2nd (of all things!) as in the line:
low d o w n sorry man
he is being highly original and highly sophiticated. He knows exactly what he is doing, but he is not doing it for the sake of originality or sophistication, but for its artistic truth-value.
And Holcomb is quite capable of 'polish'. Listen to his beautiful mellow vibrato in his a capella version of MOONSHINER (THE HIGH LONESOME SOUND). If he usually gives his music a jagged edge it is because he has a conviction that it takes him closer to truth. I think here of another great and abused American artist, Herman Melville, who wrote:
"Truth uncompromisingly told will always have its jagged edges."
If you share this interest in truth then I would suggest that you get THE HIGH LONESOME SOUND and AN UNTAMED SENSE OF CONTROL and listen and listen and listen and learn about art and life from this master, burning intensely, though quietly, unambitiously, lost in the crowd.
Not bad.......2003-02-13

Fine western-flavored roots music.......2003-02-17
I first learned of Rowan and Edwards hearing a song "Buddies in the Saddle" on the bluegrass channel of satellite TV (wonderful invention for music lovers otherwise stuck with urban format commercial radio -- deliver us from what's happened to C&W). Turns out "Buddies in the Saddle" is a Maybelle Carter song, about the friendship of two cowboys, one of whom is lost in a storm. Sung in harmony with an upbeat tempo and such sweet sincerity by two seasoned voices, it got me to buy the whole album, and I was not disappointed. Every song in the collection is arranged handsomely and performed with fine accoustic muscianship -- guitars, mandolin, banjo, and bass.
The songs make up a rich variety of styles, tempos, instrumentation, and voices. There is the aching ballad "The Night Guard," about a lovelorn young cowboy on the trail who is killed by a long-horned steer. In another vein is Woody Guthrie's "Reno Blues" about the fate of a Philadelphia lawyer. The traditional "Goodbye Old Paint," sung simply with two voices, guitar and banjo, evokes another era of wagon trains and dusty cattle drives. And there's a long, mellow, gently rocking version of Bill Monroe's "Midnight on the Stormy Deep."
I recommend this one to anyone with a heart for western-flavored roots music. You can't go wrong.
Bluegrass Cowboy.......2003-01-13
We have all come to expect a certain type of music associated with a cowboy tune and this definately is a veer from the norm.
The musicians are excellent, the arrangements great and Don and Peter sound wonderful.
When can one say.........."It's different".
I was blown away!!!.......2002-10-07
unbroken and unfixed.......2002-10-01
High Lonesome Cowboy is nothing fancy, just acoustic guitars, mandolin, and stand-up bass. The songs are mostly standards, though -- given that Rowan and Edwards aren't exactly tourists here -- still able to surprise. Rowan and Edwards find some fresh verses (out of the many hundreds, some printable, that must be out there) to "The Old Chisholm Trail." "Ramblin' Cowboy" -- a moving Western variant of the Appalachian "I've Always Been a Rambler" -- was new to me. "Goodbye, Old Paint" happily departs from the familiar text, borrowing verses from the ancient (circa 1870s) variant John Lomax collected from old-time Texas cowboy fiddler Jess Morris. Perhaps less happily, their take on the Woody Guthrie chestnut "Philadelphia Lawyer" (retitled "Reno Blues" for no clear reason) affords the song a graver reading than Guthrie meant -- unless those funereal harmonies are intended for ironic effect.
Edwards, whose vocals sometimes almost eerily echo the late Marty Robbins's, handles most of the lead singing. He proves again that he's as fine a cowboy singer as any who's put mouth to microphone. If the songs and the performances break no new ground, they're all the more appealing for that. After all, something that has lasted a century and a half, as American cowboy song has, isn't exactly broken. Rowan and Edwards know better than to fix it.

Great traditional country album.......2005-05-16
Both of those hits are brilliant but my favorite track here is the third hit - the one that Alan and Randy didn't write. Point of light (co-written by two established songwriters, Don Schlitz and Thom Schuyler) contains plenty of wisdom in its lyrics. All the songs here are wonderful including Let me try, Oh what a time to be me, Heart of hearts, High lonesome and I'm gonna have a little talk.
The three country hits from this album all charted in 1991. Randy had a couple of number one country hits in 1992, recorded for greatest hits compilations. He recorded an album of western songs in 1993 then had another major country release (This is me) in 1994. That yielded three more major country hits but subsequent appearances on the charts became less frequent although he continued to have occasional hits into the new millennium.
This is one of Randy's finest albums - five of its tracks made in to the double-CD Anthology. If you wish to collect some of Randy's original albums, you should definitely include this one.
This is a good record for a good price.......2002-06-08
I think more traditional fans and more pop oriented fans can appreciate this record as it is often as catchy as it is traditional. The players on the record are also great. The Slide guitar is fantastic and having Marty Stuart play on it sure didn't hurt and Alan Jackson's writing was a help too. I recommend it to anybody who has heard Travis' voice and liked it. He is a fine example of a real country artist, no offense to the pop country people intended.
