Great Country Songs

Editorial Reviews

Elvis was perceived as a country music newcomer in 1954, albeit an unorthodox one. And in later years, regardless of how much pop fluff or insipid movie fare he recorded, country remained a vital touchstone. This generously programmed collection (including five previously unissued alternate takes) serves as a powerful reminder. It begins with the Sun recordings of "I Forgot to Remember to Forget" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky" and samples Elvis's rocking, early RCA versions of beloved country tunes "When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again" and his childhood favorite "Old Shep." Elvis drew from all over the spectrum, covering Eddy Arnold's 1947 hit "I'll Hold You in My Heart" along with the later "Green, Green Grass of Home," "Help Me Make It Through the Night," and "He'll Have to Go." A newer country cover, of Jerry Reed's "Guitar Man," returned him to the hard-rocking style that many feared he'd abandoned. By drawing across the board, this set offers a vital look at this often-underappreciated side of Presley. --Rich Kienzle

If you're looking for the sound of the original recordings, look to a different CD.

1 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE.......2002-01-13

These songs are all re-makes of the originals. If what you want is the originals, please purchase other Jimmy Dean CD's, as this one is not the one that plays the original hits, only re-makes by Jimmy Dean later in his career.

5 out of 5 stars joy.......2001-05-12

any song of jimmy deans is great. i wish he would come back and sing. i dont know if anyone remembers but in 1967 i worked at a truck stop and there was a song in the juke box that i think was "when someone mentions your name" i cant find it anywhere. i know he sang it and i just want to hear it again. i wish i could email to jimmy dean but it is all about sausauge..

5 out of 5 stars All Songs and stories so good.......2001-02-23

There is not one song that Jimmy Dean sings that I haven't tried to get one of, There is a christmas song, I heard about his mom he did and have never been able to find since I don't know the title. He is a great entertainer I know the sausage is good, but wish he would get back into music, and would love to see him do some TV. His shows were just great. Would love for him to know how insprirational and wonderful his talent really is.I am a 61 year old grandmother, who wish's my grandchildren could always love and relate to these songs as I have. These are the kind of songs that have so much meaning,as was Walter Brenhan, and just recently have had the pleasure to enjoy once again Jody Miller. !Would recomend this music to anyone 5 stars!

3 out of 5 stars Stan the Man. Sometimes great. Sometimes not. The most is there inbetween somewhere........2006-01-09

This is the Best of Stan Ridgway. The Best is realy great, but the other tracks are a mixed experience. The best track ever by Stan Ridgway, is Camouflage, and it`s included here as track 8. This is an extraordinary good song, especially when it comes to the writing. This is high class litterature, a short story, with a very good "visual" score. It makes me shiver everytime i listen to it. The rest of the tracks is not up there in that "department", sorry to say. Track 1 Salesman has also qualities, especially it`s funky rythm all trough the song. Track 6 Goin Southbound is also a good listen, with a certain sting to it, and tempoupbeat in the right direction.
Track 12 The Big Heat has quality all over. There are some realy weird stuff on this like Track 11 The Cannon Song with
the Fowler Brothers (from the Threepenny Opera). Track 16 Walkin Home Alone had a walkalong musical quality, but the rest of the tracks, is a mixed bag. Stan Ridgway`s 1985 CD The Big Heat is anyway a better treat. And why put in all that old Wall of Woodoo crap on this CD ?. Stan couldnt save that from his "old backin band ", and sometimes it`s just overall "noicy" to say it with few words.

1 out of 5 stars Camouflage.......2005-11-04

Ive been searching for the Stand Ridgeway song "Camouflage" but couldnt find it anywhere (pun intended!)

For what its worth, Im not a fan of country music but "Camouflage" was Stans biggest hit in the UK. Licensed to "Now Thats What I Call Music Vol 11", Stan appeared on BBC1s "Top Of The Pops" to perform the hit that tells the story of a ghostly marine serving in the Vietnam war. The song is an absoloute classic and worth the price of this CD alone - forget the other tracks - Camouflage is essential music!

4 out of 5 stars Good overview of a unique artist.......2001-08-07

I don't actually own this collection but, having most or all of Stan's solo stuff, I think this is actually a pretty good overview or introduction to his stuff, though it would have been even better if it had "Big Dumb Town". After his third album, things became much more spotty and this picks out some of the best from his work. If you want more after this I'd start with Mosquitos, then the Big Heat, and go from there.

3 out of 5 stars Great artist, poor compilation.......2000-01-02

While the songs for the most part are all good ones, there's a certain lack of inspiration in the mix it creates. It just doesn't compare to any of his complete albums, all of which make better introductions to the man's work. The best reason to buy this is it's a good way to get Don't Box Me In, which is one of his best. My own recommendation is that if you need an introduction to his work that you go for Mosquitoes (available on Amazon for under 7 bucks), Big Heat, or PartyBall. After that you'll want all the others, anyway, and by then you'll have all the songs on this CD. It just doesn't make good financial sense to buy it.

4 out of 5 stars But you better like honky tonk music.......2002-12-31

This is a great cd, if you like country music. Wonderful to listen to during a divorce, a breakup, or even just when you're mad or remembering an old boyfriend. Someone Else's trouble now is particularly uplifting after being liberated from a bad relationship. I listen to this when I'm mad at my hubbie, and he usually gets the hint *grin* Ladies, try "forgetting" that it's in the cd player and see if he gets the hint!

2 out of 5 stars A CD that was not Community Property.......2000-10-25

This spectacular collection is aimed for the female of species, especially when the alimony is overdue, the lawyer hasn't been paid, and one needs a pot to pity in.

Who's Lonely now by Highway 101 is outstanding, and Younger Men raises a massage of hope. And of course, Never gonna be your fool again by DeAnna Cox is more uplifting than Dolly Parton.

Sic transit gloria mundi.

5 out of 5 stars His best single CD country collection!.......2006-09-07

This is Elvis' best single CD collection of country tunes. It covers the entire span of his career, from his early days at Sun right on through the 70's. This collection includes several alternate versions of songs not available anywhere else, including the 1981 remix version of "Guitar Man" which was a top 30 hit in the US and went all the way to number 1 on the country music chart!

Highly recommended if you like country music.

4 out of 5 stars My, it's been a long, long time........2006-01-03

Obviously, this is a collection of country songs recorded by Elvis Presley. Elvis had a great affinity for country music, having grown up in Memphis. These 24 songs are fine examples of Elvis' love for country music. The main attractions here, from a serious Elvis fan's standpoint, are the previously unreleased alternate takes of five songs. This album also marked the first appearance on CD of the 1980 remix of "Guitar Man". The story behind the remix is: producer Felton Jarvis erased the backing track to the song, and gave it a new backing track to make it sound like an '80s country song, which ironically makes it sound more dated than the original version. Anyway, this is a solid collection of songs that Elvis fans will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE ELVIS.......2006-01-01

I enjoyed all of Elvis' songs. Especially his "jiving" as he sang. I did not know he recorded any Country Songs. Being a devoted Country fan since about 1937, well, maybe 1938, I don't know how I missed this one. You can't go wrong with Elvis.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Overview............2004-09-05

This review is written mainly to refute some points made by the other reviewers who are quite mistaken. This CD was not a quick release to cash in on 30 #1 Hits....in fact, it was actually released in 1996 - a full 7 years before 30 #1 Hits! Some fact checking is in order, folks. Ignore the reviewer who said Kentucky Rain and Always On My Mind don't fit in. Both are seamlessly integrated into the tracklist (let's not forget Willie Nelson's cover was a much bigger hit on the country chart than the pop chart and the fact that the Pet Shop Boys covered it - turning it into a disco hit - has no bearing on its country roots.). If you enjoy this, I recommend his 1971 Elvis Country (I'm 10,000 Years Old) CD....but this is for those who want an overview and it does the job in spades. The only song that does not really work is "He'll Have To Go" because Elvis tried to be too faithful to the Jim Reeves original. Elvis almost always relied on his own instincts in covering a song and this one feels like he's trying to be ol' Jim. But this is still an essential CD.

3 out of 5 stars A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock & Roll.......2003-10-23

"Elvis: Great Country Classics" is BMG's latest attempt to validate Elvis's influence beyond the boundary of the rock and roll by packaging a collection of tunes rooted in the country music genre. The 24 song compilation captures the full scope of the King's career from the early 1950s to the late 1970s. Tracks like "I Forgot to Remember to Forget" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky" depict a young Presley (a singer obviously influenced by the country music foundation germaine to his native South) successfully making the leap from country/blues to rockability/rock and roll. Before our very ears, Elvis transitions from a country music neophyte to innovative rock star. With songs like "He'll Have to Go" and "Green, Green Grass of Home," an older Elvis effectively revisits his musical foundation...in essence, the quintessential rocker becomes the consummate country crooner. Several of the CD's tracks prove Elvis could hold his own with any of the leading country stars of the era. Presley's powerful cover of Hank Williams' "Your Cheatin' Heart" and equally strong performances on "I'll Hold You in My Heart" and the Jim Reeves standard, "I Really Don't Want to Know" leave little doubt Elvis could light up the Grand Ole Opry with the same intensity he could rock the roof off of Madison Square Garden. Most of the remaining tracks add credibility to Presley's standing as a bona fide country music artist although Elvis falters in his attempt to cover Glen Campbell's "Gentle on My Mind." Likewise, "Kentucky Rain," a 1970 release that hit the Top 20 on the pop music charts seems out of place in this collection...perhaps included because it was penned by the late country star Eddie Rabbit. The wonderful ballad "Always on My Mind" is another question mark...true, Elvis took it to Number 16 on the Country charts in 1972, but for all intents and purposes, it's a mainstream tune that Willie Nelson, and then a few years later, the Pet Shop Boys, covered and placed on the pop charts in the 1980s. While "KR" and "AOMM" shouldn't have been included in this collection, several songs were omitted that bear mention. Of note, 1979's "There's a Honky Tonk Angel" and the 1981 release "Lovin' Arms." Both tracks are genuine country and each record hit the Top Ten on the Country charts in their respective years. Additionally, including "Faded Love," "Tomorrow Never Comes," "Early Mornin' Rain," and "Just Pretend" would have significantly enhanced the country flavor of this effort. Lastly, "EGCC" ends on a very high note with the inclusion of "Guitar Man." Recorded by Elvis in 1967, it was a very modest pop hit the same year. RCA resurrected the song in 1981 - revamped with new Jerry Reed guitar licks - and the posthumous release became Elvis's final Country chart topper, hitting Number 1!

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best Wedding Song Collections!.......1999-03-23

Although I am already married, I truly love the songs on this CD. They're soft, romantic. The kind of music to mellow you out, make you want to slow dance or just cuddle with the one you love. And just because it's a Wedding Album doesn't mean we can't listen to it for years to come! I really enjoyed being able to sample the music online. If there are any doubts as to whether to buy it or not, this feature definitely helps set the mood to want to buy it. My personal favorites are All I Have- by Beth Nielson Chapman and, of course, Crystal Gayle (who is, incidently, also from Kentucky!) and my all-time favorite artist--Eddie Rabbitt.

Thanx for the quick delivery. All her greats are on here plus unknown ones, but good ones.

3 out of 5 stars Oldies but Goodies.......2005-10-17

Call me sentimental, but I love highly emotional songs, especially when sung well by a female singer who loves to sing.
As such, this album's title speaks for itself.
"Don't it make my brown eyes blue" makes my green eyes red;
"Someday soon" always elicits a tear or two;
"I still miss someone" evokes some sad memories.
Mind you, I could do without "When I dream" (too sappy even for me).
In other words, this album reflects the best of the pop-country crossover genre, of which Crystal Gayle is surely one of the originators

5 out of 5 stars A GREATEST HITS COLLECTION.......2003-06-03

In the seventies Crystal Gayle (Loretta Lynn's younger sister) was one of the most successful crossover country artists and this valuable collection explains why. It contains her massive 1977 hit Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue plus the next year's number one, Heart Mender. In addition, there are the soulful slow ballads I Still Miss Someone, Talking In Your Sleep and When I Dream, the wistful Someday Soon and another big hit, the catchy Hello I Love You. And if those weren't enough, the melodic beauties Dreaming My Dreams, Too Good To Throw Away and Cry Me A River are superb too. It's a pity the brilliant songs Why Have You Left The One You Left Me For? and Wayward Wind from the album When I Dream have been omitted, but that's my only complaint. This is a wonderful anthology of quality country-pop containing gems aplenty.

5 out of 5 stars Super Hits........2002-04-15

The BEST Crystal Gayle collection around. This album is quite generous . . . concerning some other skimpy compilations available on the market.
The recordings and Crystal's vocals are splendid.
You can never get tired of listening to "Beyond You" & "I Wanna Come Back To You".
Strictly Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars ELVIS ALTER'EGO SHINES AGAIN!!.......2000-08-23

Just received this excellent cd this morning by Ronnie McDowell, what a terrific album! For anyone who enjoys gospel music, this cd is for you! Ever since his tribute to Elvis in 1977 (The King Is Gone) I have been a fan of Ronnie McDowell, seen him in concert several times, own 6 of his albums. This cd however rates among his best. His renditions of "In the Garden", "Peace in the Valley", "If We Never Meet Again", among others, will melt your soul. This cd rates among one of the best Gospel albums out there, along side the albums of Elvis Presley, Jim Reeves, and Mahalia Jackson. Only knock on this great cd is the length and number of songs. Common Curb records this is the year 2000, 10 songs & 30 minutes of recordings doesn't cut it anymore, otherwise this Ronnie McDowell release would merit 5 star rating. "Great Gospel Songs" by Ronnie McDowell will make a great addition to any music lovers collection.

5 out of 5 stars I think that this is one of the best CDs every recorded........1999-08-03

I personally prefer gospel music to about any other type of music in the world, and Ronnie McDowell is the one person who can sing with true feelings in his voice, I love Elvis Presley and thought that there would never be another in this world who could compare to him in singing gospel, but this recording is one of the best in the world. Ronnie has really touched my heart with this CD and I am truly looking forward to more of his recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Eden Regained.......2004-07-10

After Salamander Crossing's breakup, Rani Arbo and her band Daisy Mayhem went their own way. "Gambling Eden" takes a different approach than 2001's "Cocktail Swing." Whereas the previous disc focused on 20's & 30's jazz, "Gambling Eden" is more in the folk-rock-country territory of a band like Nickel Creek. One of the first records I bought as a boy in the early 60's was "Stewball" by Lonnie Donnegan. At Arbo's hands the track pulses with energy with Arbo's violin giving it a traditional feel, particularly compared with Donnegan's earlier rockabilly take, "Way out in California where Stewball was born, all the jockeys in the country say he blew there in a storm." This set contains some fine originals such as the slow melodic "Finland," "Is it raining in Finland? I want to know; It's covered up with snow & I want to see you if you're ever coming home." "Turtle Dove" is a traditional tune traced to 1835, given a great energetic rendition that will be embraced by "O Brother" enthusiasts. John McGann & Chris Moore's "Closer" is such a lovely haunting slow song polished to a shine by the Mayhem band, "The answer always came back in a tangle like vines climbing up the side of a hollow tree, Now I think that looking up & wondering is just the place I really want to be." "O Death" that appeared on the "O Brother" soundtrack by Ralph Stanley is given a haunting arrangement and impassioned Arbo vocal. "Sparrow" is a country-swing original that brings to mind some of Toni Price's great recordings. The CD takes its title from "Eve" that traces the fall in the garden, "Paradise is only what you feel, everything else is so real, Who told us we had this power? I gambled Eden in an hour." "The Farmer Is the Man" is another familiar tune given another sterling rendition. My favorite track is the uproariously energetic "Road to Heaven," "I'm gonna find my own road to heaven, I'm gonna find me mine." The CD concludes with Dave Carter's "Farewell to Saint Dolores," a turgid lament. Arbo may have felt that she was "Gambling Eden" with the new direction she's taken on this disc, but the level of success here encountered might better be termed "Eden Regained." Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Jones Sings the Pain of Payne..........2004-12-23

GEORGE JONES SINGS THE GREAT SONGS OF LEON PAYNE includes many tunes you will see on various Jones' compilations, such as "Blue Side of Lonesome" (which was a hit for Jim Reeves), "They'll Never Take Her Love From Me" (recorded by the mighty Hank, who also recorded Payne's "Lost Highway"), and "Take Me" (co-written by Payne with Jones and would later go on to be the first single from Jones and new wife Tammy Wynette years later). It's great that Hollywood has issued this record for it showcases George paying tribute to one of country music's great songwriters in his usual "I'll sing you a song with all my heart before I'm executed" manner.

Of special note here are some of the tear-jerking ballads that George sings as if his very life depends on it. There is the haunting "There's No Justice" and the typical "everything ain't right" country ballad "Things have Gone to Pieces." In another singer's hands this tune would have been laughable but Jones pulls it off, delivering one of his most bluesy vocals EVER. A big highlight of the record, though, is "Brothers of A Bottle," where Jones sings about the evils of women and the joys of getting loaded.

There are some duds, such as "Let A Little Lovin' Come In," an upbeat novelty that sounds a bit silly now, and "The Selfishness Of Man," a would-be anthem about the sorry state of mankind which sounds odd coming from the hell-raising honky tonk legend. This is minor criticism, however. This LP is worth owning if for nothing else but the outstanding performance George gives on "Take Me," which exudes that elegant Lefty Frizzell influence which he built upon to achieve such a stunning vocal style. I'm happy I own it - you will be too.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Jones Albums Of The 1960's.......2000-03-22

Leon Payne, a great blind Texas-based honky-tonker of the late-forties, fifties and sixties, was an even greater country songwriter, maybe the finest of the middle part of the century (he provided Hank Williams with "Lost Highway" and also wrote "I Love You Because"). Jim Reeves, among others, recorded some wonderful things with his compositions. He did'nt do George any harm either, the last three cuts of this singles collection from 1971 show him at a mid-sixties peak - there might not be a better Jones performance than "Things Have Gone To Pieces". Great songs, even better vocals, a must-have for Jones fans. Now, how about somebody re-releasing Payne's Starday albums from the early sixties? (You listening, Bear Family?)
