Yes, he looks like the rock & roll love child of Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, all blond and faux-scruffy and sexy in leather pants. And yes, little girls will swoon. But Andy Griggs is not the Fabian of his generation. Three years after his promising, gold-selling debut, You Won't Ever Be Lonely, he returns with a surprisingly muscular set of songs, half of which he cowrote. Louisiana born and bred, with soulful bluegrass and gospel influences, Griggs knows how to get the feeling in the grooves. He's at his best when mining a gravelly, Travis Tritt-style "outlaw" sound, as he frequently does throughout the repertoire and particularly on the beat-heavy, brooding "A Hundred Miles of Bad Road." But don't sell him short on atmospheric songs that capture a moment, even if he puts an ill-chosen banjo on a Cajun-flavored rhythm number ("Sweetheart of Beinja Bayou") or references a "preacher's daughter holding a beer" on "How Cool Is That." By the time he gets to the hidden track, "Someone Like Me," written by his late brother, Mason, he's pretty much given blood. Let's see DiCaprio do that. --Alanna Nash

The heartland rocker's first album of all-new material in more than five years finds John Mellencamp in full anthem mode. This is his State of the Union address, with guitars that chime like the Byrds heralding sentiments that recall the socially-conscious 1960s, yet sound all the more pertinent today. Balancing the desolate landscape of "Ghost Towns Along the Highway," the hell-on-earth of "Rural Route," and the tolls demanded on the title track's "Freedom's Road" are the embrace of brotherhood on "Someday," the Everyman populism of "The Americans," and the soaring transcendence of "My Aeroplane." Within the context of the album's song cycle, the "Our Country" centerpiece sounds richer and more powerful than it has as a truck commercial--like a roots-rocking sequel to Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land." Mellencamp enlists Joan Baez for a duet on the protest ballad "Jim Crow," while saving his most blistering political commentary for the unlisted bonus track, "Rodeo Clown." --Don McLeese

4 out of 5 stars Love the songs.......2007-07-18

This is my first Mellencamp CD and I love the songs on the CD. I didn't give it 5 stars because there is a technical problem with this batch of CDs. The last song (maybe it's really 2 songs) has a 2 minute gap about 4 1/2 minutes into the song. I got it replaced, but the replacement had the same problem.

5 out of 5 stars Mellencamp Is Back!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-17

Yes he is back to his good ole days of his Scarecrow,Lonesome Jubilee and Big Daddy days. A MUST for all his fans

4 out of 5 stars Mellencamp's Return to Greatness!.......2007-07-03

Finally returning to the music that made him great, John Mellencamp nails it with this CD. Although not a Scarecrow or Jubilee, this is a solid CD which definitely harkens back to these other works. We've definitely missed him and his music. Although fans will always buy whatever he puts out, it was clear that he was trying new musical paths that didn't completely work for him until he woke up with this effort! Thanks John! You didn't forget your roots after all.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good! Good show!.......2007-06-27

After the all-cover TROUBLE NO MORE and the decent but weak-in-the-second-half CUTTIN' HEADS, I thought perhaps Mellencamp's muse had left for greener passages; at 56, who would've expected such a comeback? I bought this cd, thought it was pretty decent, but it hung with me; I keep coming back to it week after week (it hasn't left my car for 2 months!), and I'm listening to it constantly. The production on this record is incredible; it has a haunting sound unlike any of his other records, and the sonic quality the guys come up with are terrific, particularly with the guitar parts and the harmonies. The songs themselves are good; if he doesn't tread a lot of new ground, he doesn't sound burnt out at all; "Someday," "Freedom's Road," "My Aeroplane" and "Rural Route" are as good as anything he's done, sonically and performance wise. "Our Country" has created a lot of backlash, and if I watched tv more maybe it would annoy me too, but it would've been a top 10 single back in the day and sits quite nicely in the sequencing towards the end of the cd. This is definitely one of the best rock records of recent memory.

Ska music has been deeply ingrained in the punk rock culture since the Clash adopted their rude boy stance near the end of the British punk invasion and the 2-Tone label put ska on the map. Suddenly, punks stopped kicking the crap out of each other long enough to dance. The debut release by Orange County, California's Sublime is a positively infectious record that marries varied styles of dub, reggae, rap, sampling, scratching, and badass dancehall ska with old-school punk overtones. Musicianship on this record is exceptionally tight, featuring Brad Nowell's innovative guitar work and bright, soulful voice. Packed with 40 oz. of rock (21 tracks) including the ultimate pot-smoking anthem "Smoke Two Joints" and the novelty hit "Date Rape." --Gail Worley

5 out of 5 stars If I had to take but one CD to an island..........2007-06-12

This would be the CD. Not only does it rock, but it just makes you want to go to the beach and chill. My favorite tracks are "Waiting For My Ruca", "40 oz. To Freedom" and "We're Only Gonna Die For Our Arrogance" (Bad Religion cover).

Sublime was one of the greatest bands of the ninties, if not the greatest ska band of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Truly fantastic, timeless music.......2007-05-19

What an album!! An awesome debut from an explosive (and extremely short lived) band. This album stands the test of time. Regardless what time of the year it is when this cd comes to play my mood is instantly lifted. One of those rare albums where you don't pick and choose songs. You listen from front to back each time.

The variety of music from all out punk, to ska/reggae is fun and all are technically good. Bud and Eric keep the beat going and Brad (RIP!) comes through with some tasty riffs. When I purchased this album I was in grammar school and Sublime was just starting to get on the air. This is my benchmark album to this day. Honestly, I am huge fan of all their work and the self titled album is great. This album however just has soul. No other way to describe it. Be it cruising in my car or kicking back a couple of beers with my friends this album is often played and warmly receipted by everyone.

For anyone who does not own it or is on the fence; worry not. This album is great. I would go through my personal favorites on the album but, I think at some point and time nearly every song was my number one. Now over a decade later the songs I loved are still awesome and the songs I liked I love.

A must buy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Talk about music.......2007-04-11

I can't ________ believe I waited so long to get this. I have liked Sublime, heard plenty of their songs, hits, and Date Rape, Smoke Two Joints and 40 Oz. To Freedom from this album. But these other songs are just as good. And I will admit, the lesser songs are actually better than thoss three songs (besides Date Rape).

Yeah, this is ________ music, and that's all. It has a lot for an album. Soul, rebellion, funkiness, rythem, alot. This is one of the best albums I have ever heard in a long time. Not as much as Bloodhound Gang, but this actually _________ exceeded my epectations (Cake failed bigtime).

There is not a bad song on this album, just a couple average songs and a crappy song. THe last track is kind of weak, New Trash more like noise (good thing it's only a minute long), and the Hope cover is _______ compared to the great song from The Descendants. Everything else gets two thumbs up.

OF course though, the musicans are what makes this band _______ awesome. Bud Gaugh's drumming plays second to Bradley Nowell in the music. Bradely Nowell is self explainitory, and his voice is awesome. He can actually sing. Eric has got to be one of the msot underrated bassist yet. Listen to his bass guitar on Date Rape.

If you don't have this album, check it out now. I just discovered it and I can't stop listening to it. Sorry, no new Bloodhound Gang either.

ANd cool cover.

3 out of 5 stars Uneven with hints at what's to come.......2007-04-02

A fun, but uneven album. I hear hints of the great work to come on the self-titled album. Ruby Begonias is probably my highlight here. I really admire what Bradley could do when he was on his game, but I find things a little too rough for my tastes on most of this album.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect CD.......2007-01-23

40 Oz. To Freedom is deftinely perfect. This is the best CD I own and I play it all the time. I am gonna keep it short here because I don't feel like typing a big reviw, but this is just amazing. Kicks off with the low Waiting For My Ruca which is abosulely great and dosen't slack off with hit songs like 40 Oz. To Freedom and Smoke Two Joints following up. Sublime just puts out amazing track after amazing track with songs like Don't Push, Date Rape, Scarlet Begonias, D.J.s, and Right Back just to name a few. Recomnedded to anyone.

When Songs of Freedom was released originally in 1992, it was a perfect complement to either a greatest hits collection like Legend or the entire collection of the reggae master's albums. Songs boasts enough of the recognizable from Marley's canon to address the hit seeker, but the set also reaches way, way back to include Marley's first single, the youthful "Judge Not" from 1962, and then closes more than four hours later with a 1980 live take of "Redemption Song" from his last concert. In between are live takes, studio remixes, and, of course, standard looks at Marley standards, playing together as a perfect balance between the familiar and the new. The flow of famous takes increases into CDs 3 and 4, where "No Woman, No Cry" appears from a 1976 set at the Roxy and where "Jammin'" and "Exodus" come in mixes that were new to fans in 1992. Of course these four CDs show in wide-angle view exactly how fantastic and commercially improbable Marley was. He was able to popularize tunes about both the repression of African nations and their liberation while also bringing to rock audiences an undeniably Jamaican music, breaking the U.S. and British geographic strongholds on the 1970s pop and rock marketplace. Never mind that he made Island Records' first fortune, he also created a body of work so lasting that a four-CD set heavy on alternate versions can stand out in any contemporary music collection. For the 1999 reissue of the original 1992 box set, no new music has been added. The format has changed, though, from a long-box presentation to a cube containing individual slipcased CDs. It's still a remarkable gem. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars A Stunning And Brilliantly Assembled Bob Marley Collection........2006-12-26

Out of all the Christmas gifts I have received today, one stands clear as my favorite: "Songs Of Freedom", a four cd boxed set compiling 88 classic Marley tunes, a vast number of which are rarities. Alternate takes, never or rarely heard performances (starting with his first recordings with Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston dating back to 1964) and much more. The sound quality is quite good, as are the sequencing and the liner notes.

Bob Marley was an incredibly kind, loving, talented, nurturing and intelligent individual, and "Songs Of Freedom" is a testament to just how great this man truly was and how his message still rings true today: a message of peace, unity, love, tolerance, freedom and faith. This is a must have for all music fans, as no record collection is complete without anything by Bob Marley.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-08-31

It's not much I can say because this box set will NOT disappoint! From beginning to end, it captures your ears! With a 95-page booklet which includes insight into Bob's life, song origins and wonderful photos, whether you are a huge fan or a beginning fan, you will not get enough of each of the tracks! The 12" mixes of JAMMIN', EXODUS, RIDE NATTY RIDE, COMING IN FROM THE COLD, COULD YOU BE LOVED, and ONE LOVE/PEOPLE GET READY are the highlights for me as well as the first disc, which includes early mixes of ONE LOVE/PEOPLE GET READY, MELLOW MOOD, STIR IT UP, & THANK YOU LORD!

5 out of 5 stars Yeaaah..........2006-04-30

I have always liked Bob's first hit single, "simmer down" it is here as is all of his most important work. This compilation will take you above and beyond casual Marley fan status. The booklet that comes with this boxed set has antecdotes and details found nowhere else. Put it on the stereo and ride along with the evolution of a Master.

5 out of 5 stars Bob's legacy.......2006-02-04

Simply put this is the best collection of Bob Marley songs you can find on the planet. It is worth every dollar. The acoustic medley (which includes guava jelly, this train and stir it up to name a few) is something that every fan of Bob should hear. My other favorites are "Johnny Was" and "Zimbabwe" neither of which I have on any other albums. There are versions of songs which you probably haven't heard before. "How about a bad title?" wonders Spencer Kayden's Little Sally in "Too Much Exposition." "That could kill a show pretty good." It's a tribute to the skill deployed by the Urinetown creative team (Mark Hollman, music and lyrics; Greg Kotis, book and lyrics) that its title doesn't kill the show. Set in a near-future in which water depletion has led to a ban on private toilets, this may be the only musical in history in which one of the leads makes a fortune on pee. But the show (which originated Off-Broadway before graduating to the big league) limits its subversive intent to subject matter and is refreshingly classic in approach and structure--think Weill-meets-Lewis Carroll. Backed by a small ensemble, the cast (with John Cullum in a turn nothing short of brilliant as the evil urinal magnate) has a field day with Kotis and Hollman's frequently hilarious score. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Find.......2007-04-03

I just recently discovered this gem of a musical. It's a stand out show with a unique touch. If heard a few outside musicals (The Rocky Horror Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch...) but this one stands out from them. The music is amazing, the lyrics are creative, and the humor is ripe.

With a chamber music-esque overture, the tone is set. 'Too Much Exposition' is a great introduction to Urinetown (the musical). Officer Lockstock addresses the audience about what they should expect from the show. Little Sally wants to let the audience in on the water shortage but Lockstock stops her. ("You're too young to understand it now, but nothing can kill a show like too much exposition." "How 'bout bad subject matter? Or a bad title, even? That could kill a show pretty good.")

I've read what others have written: you don't get the whole humor of the show unless you've seen it. I haven't seen it, but this recording is enough to get me see it. (That is, if a production nearby, even a high school production, is put on.)

The songs that I find myself listening to over and over are:

Too Much Exposition (not really a song, but still...)
Urinetown
It's A Privilage to Pee
Mr. Cladwell (a wonderfully sweet villain song)
Cop Song (a wonderfully fun villain song)
Follow Your Heart
Don't Be the Bunny
Act 1 Finale
What Is Urinetown?
Run, Freedome, Run!
Why Did I Listen to That Man?
We're Not Sorry (a great 20's sound, reminds me of 'Chicago')
I See A River (I really love this song... the feeling gotten across, before Lockstock comes out to comment, is 'Oh, everything is going to be okay', but Lockstock informs us that all is NOT well)

With a cry of "Hail Mathus!" the show ends. I just have to listen again, after making a trip to the bathroom.

5 out of 5 stars Urinetown the Musical.......2007-03-10

This CD has all the songs from the show. The show is great and this rendition is about the best.

3 out of 5 stars Not for Everyone.......2006-12-28

This musical is a great piece for the 21st century no doubt, that being said it takes some getting used to. The musical cannot be taken at face value, there are lots of things happening under the surface and it takes some bites at things musical theater doesn't usually take, like itself. On the surface it is strange, and not really something people would listen to over and over. However, once you figure it out, it's fun to listen to it again to find all the things that are really going on. It is very funny, and says some good things about the current state of the world. For musical theater fans this is questionable, if you just like the toe-tapping happy go lucky feel, this isn't it. But if you like the social commentary that goes along with that toe tapping, this is a must. NOT FOR FIRST TIME BROADWAY LISTNERS. Favorite Song: "Look at the Sky"

5 out of 5 stars "DON'T BE THE BUNNY!".......2006-12-04

My son, a high school senior, told me his first show of this year's theatrical season was going to be "Urinetown". My response was something like ... No, really, what shows are you doing this year? Then he brought home a recording of it, and I was hooked right away by the lyrics. Over the years my son has been involved in many performances, but he and the rest of the cast had a real blast preparing for, and performing, this show! He wanted Lockstock, but was cast as Cladwell ... Owned it ... Loved it!
I am no Broadway expert by any stretch of the definition, but this show is wonderfully entertaining! You will see (and hear) snippets from other shows, you will pick up on some of even the more subtle stabs at musicals as a whole, you will groan, you will laugh and you will enjoy ... But only if you try not to take it too seriously.
Get past the title (in this case I certainly think it did not "...kill a show pretty good"), relax, and be entertained. And for goodness sake, if you have a chance to see it performed live, do so! A musical that pokes fun at itself? Yes, a refreshing departure from the norm, and worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars Now my favorite CD, EVER!.......2006-10-03

After reading Urinetown (never having seen it), I wondered what on earth it sounded like. Most of the book is just lyrics, and I had no idea what they sounded like. When I finally listened to the music, I found an incredibly complex, catchy, and moving CD.

The music isn't so much complex as it is creative and works with the lyrics. Keep in mind this is a comedy, but this comedy does have soaring melodies and very great simulataneous singing moments (I can't remember what that is specifically called, but think of "Tonight Reprise" from West Side Story). These songs not only entertained me, it moved the story along.

My favorite song is "Why Did I Listen to that Man?" as it is the song where everything comes together and reaches the climax (both in story-line and musically). However, I have a soft spot for every Cladwell song (and I haven't found a person yet who doesn't love "Don't Be the Bunny) as well as every song. What's best about this musical is the range of genres (but not so much as one would find in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat).

The cast is truly talented and can perform these songs. It's a very strong recording for what I feel (after finally getting to see it) is the best contemporary musical to date. Not only will your sides split, but you'll learn something too. Best of all, it's a musical for everyone. Unlike other equally hilarious comedies (*cough*The Producers*cough*), Urinetown never relies on "unappropriate" and "adult" material to deliver laughs, although you will have to get over the "really awful title."

Album Description

Featuring Common feat. will.i.am's remarkable new song "A Dream."

Based on the remarkable true story of Erin Gruwell and the Freedom Writers project. Erin Gruwell (Academy Award winner Hillary Swank)'s passion to become a teacher is challenged by a group of Black, Latino, and Asian gangbangers who hate her even more than they do each other. Then Erin listens to them in a way no adult has ever done, and she begins to understand that for these kids, getting through the day alive is enough. They are not delinquents but teenagers fighting a war of the streets that began long before they were born. She gives them something they never had from a teacher before - respect and an understanding of peers who have had the same experience. Written and directed by Richard LaGravanese, Produced by Danny DeVito & Stacy Sher.

5 out of 5 stars Great teachers make the difference!.......2007-02-07

While the soundtrack is great, you must see the movie to truly appreciate it. The music makes the images and themes of the movie come alive with emotion and sensitivity. The story is inspirational both of the struggles the teacher had to connect with her students and the incredible challenges the students had to face in their day-to-day lives. Great soundtrack!

5 out of 5 stars Powerfull and Moving.......2007-02-06

The Movie was one of the most powerful films I have ever seen. In my opinion it's the best movie to come out in years.

The soundtrack is a very rap oriented disc, with popular songs by 2PAC, Naughty By Nature, Cypress Hill and Montell Jordan. But there are 3 musical scores by Mark Isham that are simply masterful, and will compliment any soundtrack collection you may have. Isham's track Anne Frank is one of those tunes that express the movies sentiment, even without a visual aid. It's a truly heartfelt tune, that is one of the most aptly composed pieces ever to grace a movie. There are also 2 tracks with Miri Ben Ari, aka "The Hip Hop Violinist", one of todays most talented musicians and a true virtuoso.

But the gem of this album, the one track that makes this disc worth buying, is Will.I.Am's Dream featuring Common. Will.I.Am is one of todays most influential song writers, but this song, set to Martin Luther Kings "I have a Dream" speech, may be his best work to date.

A great movie with a great soundtrack, both should be a staple of any CD and DVD collection.

For more than 30 years, South Africa's Ladysmith Black Mambazo has infused its township sound of Isicathamiya with rich gospel harmonies. LBM's unique sound was brought to American audiences thanks to Paul Simon's landmark Graceland, and the group has toured and recorded tirelessly since. Long Walk To Freedom is a new retrospective in which the group rerecords new versions of songs from throughout its career with help from such guests as Emmylou Harris, Sarah McLachlan, Taj Mahal, and Zap Mama as well as several popular countrymen. As with the Simon album, the North American guests' voices fit hand-in-glove with the group's warm harmonies. Highlights include "Nomathemba," which was the band's first hit in 1973, the popular "Hello My Baby," and the Graceland tunes "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" and "Homeless." Though ostensibly a career retrospective, this new recording actually proves that Ladysmith Black Mambazo has never sounded better. --Tad Hendrickson

4 out of 5 stars Long Walk to Freedom.......2007-01-10

Ever since their emergence on Paul Simon's Graceland, the unique harmonies and rhythms have kept me enthtralled. The notable thing about this CD is how their famous guests adapt to their sound, choice of material, and blend is solid. Some collaborations work better than others. Mellissa Ethridge and Natalie Merchant are two standouts. This a worthwhile introduction this group.

Never appreciated in the Paul Simon days, think he exploited the novelty of their sound (OK, not a Simon fan). Incedible harmonies, and teh guest stars like Melissa blend in beautifully.

5 out of 5 stars celestial.......2006-04-07

what can I say? this is as good as it gets for African vocal harmonies (i spent 1974-1977 in the Central African Republic.)

i really should say the best vocal harmony anywhere

i could talk about each song with the wonderful stars who are featured

i'll just say that Natalie is sublime in rain

she's as amazing as they are!!!

While it was never determined whether those plastic things on their heads were flowerpots or collapsible drinking cups, the high-concept-minded Akron, Ohio, crew known as Devo had attracted mostly just the artsy new-wave crowd until this 1980 album brought them mass appeal. Way ahead of the video curve (they'd been making promo films since 1975), this band led by singer Mark Mothersbaugh and bassist Jerry Casale scored a huge hit with the jagged-rhythmed "Whip It," thanks in large part to a typically tongue-in-cheek video that MTV and dance clubs jumped on. The album also featured such cracked winners as "Girl U Want," "That's Pep," and the ever-caustic title track. --Billy Altman

5 out of 5 stars My own personal epipiphany/revelation/awakening continues...........2007-07-03

....and it as clear as clarity can possibly be that my spuddies were, are and forever will be part of my journey here on Planet Earth. I have just received my very own, brand spankin' new copy of Freedom of Choice...and it's been, ooohhh...say 26 or so years since the spud that is currently engaging your overdeveloped and underutilized senses has had the pleasure of hearing the sweet, starchy musings of the brightest bunch of hominids ever to realize the benefits (and trappings) of the opposable thumb and advanced prefrontal cortex! Things have truly come full circle for myself, just the spud boy that I be...and the feeling is the closest sensation to 'euphoria' that I have ever experienced; real or imagined, artificial or genuine. Gratitude is not a big enough term...
For if Devo were a drink, I would drink it.
For if Devo were a food, I would eat it.
For Devo is an idea...and I will do all a spud can do to absorb it. So may the pores of the inquisitive be saturated and those of the ignorant be purged. For Devo supplies the tunes that the ganglia may dance.
Is this the end of the beginning or the beginning of the end?
Is it Devolution or is it Derevolution?
What does it take...to do The Super Thing?
First one must open their eyes....

Let go the ego, and see the World for the first time...for all hope can never truly be lost, only misplaced.

'....Where pleasure follows pain
People go insane
Fly around in planes
Pray that it won't rain
Drive around in cars
Get drunk in local bars
Dream of being stars
For this I lived all my life on Planet Earth????????!!!!!!'

2 out of 5 stars Just overrated.......2006-08-28

I own Devo's first four albums, and have heard some of 'Oh No it's Devo. Haven't really decided on that album, but of the first four, I believe 'freedom of choice' to be the worst. With poor sound quality on this CD aside, I find the production on the part of Robert Margoullef to be quite unpleasant, and at times annoying. The guitars are very quiet, while the synthesisers have an almost cyber-medieval sound. On the part of the vocals, Mark Mothersbaugh has a very limited range on this album, which is quite frustrating. I think that about half the album is enjoyable, such as 'Whip It', 'Planet Earth', 'Cold War', 'Don't you know' and 'Gates of steel'. On the other hand, the rest of the album ranges from mediocre to plain awful, the worst being 'Ton of luv', 'It's not right' and 'Girl u want'. This is a very popular album, and I just can't see why.

4 out of 5 stars Bad Luck Or Bad Image Kept Them Underground,But They Are More Than A Footnote In Music History.......2006-03-12

My friends reaction to Devo the first time they saw them was that they were the wierdest band they ever saw. This was the Energy Dome stage. "Whip It" was cutting edge. Now it is a song for kids. The album was titled Freedom Of Choice and they seemed to champion this idea, to conform to the corporate image, yet the verses describe a situation where the subject goes crazy trying to make a decision. Maybe they wrote the song as a subtle message of determinism, that hid below the surface to disguise their subversive philosophy. The previous album had a song called "Triumph Of Will" to further confuse their stance. If they were really intellectual nerds they would recognize freedom of choice is an illusion so I am hoping my latter take holds the truth. After all Freud invented the term will and he was a determinist. Plus anyone that studies the human body, mainly the brain, knows free will is an illusion. There is no self initiating force in the human body. Every organ depends on outside stimulation. Even though freedom of choice seems to be common sense, when we really examine our behavior all our decisions are based on our genetic endowment, past experiences, and the current situation. I wish their lyrics championed this non-conformist truth as much as de-evolution, but their iconoclasm may be limited. This album seemed to take a step backward both lyrically and musically. It had the most filler of the first three. "Girl U Want", "Whip It", "It's Not Right", "That's Pep" and "Don't You Know" are all weak tracks in my opinion. It also contains many of their best tracks. "Gates of Steel" and "Freedom Of Choice" are classics, but the lyrics seem to reinforce them fitting into conformist society by espousing the concepts of free will. The rest has the best of both worlds. Evocative music and brilliant lyrics. "Ton U Love" and "Cold War" may be standard fare, but the music makes the lyrics stand out. I saved the best for last. Two of the finest songs ever written, "Mr. B's Ballroom" and "Planet Earth", make this a must own and help solidify Devo's catalog as one of the most exciting in recording history.

4 out of 5 stars Devo - 'Freedom Of Choice' (Warner Bros.) 4 1/2 stars.......2006-03-09

Great 1980 'new wave' classic.About as good as their 'Are We Not Men...' effort(see my review).Noticed that 'Freedom...' seems to have a more polished sound to it.Sure miss Mark Mothersbaugh and crew, their live shows are certainly a fun event to attend. Most impressive cuts here are, without a doubt "Girl U Want",the video channel staple "Whip It",title track "Freedom Of Choice","Mr.B's Balloon" and "PLanet Earth".Everybody get out their power domes!Long live Devo!!

3 out of 5 stars three and one-half stars.......2005-07-16

Known mostly for the mega-hit "whip It" Devo's 1980 effort "Freedom of Choice" is so much more. Actually the best song on the album is it's first, "Girl U Want" a crackling rocker with a decidedly Devo bent. Side two is also a real killer with the band knocking out two and one-half minute ditty's one after the other each one stopping short of being overly clever. Sonically the album's sound is very dated, but it's okay because it sounded weird back in 1980, but song arrangements are sharp, clean, and sound good at high volume. Overall high spots are the songs mentioned earlier plus "Cold War", "Don't You Know", "That's Pep". There are really no low spots, just a bit lesser songs.

Recorded in America during the Chinese crackdown on Tibet, two of these three extended tracks feature 21 monks from the 500-year-old Gyüto Tantric Order, chanting for freedom and world peace. Beautifully recorded, it features the monks, each singing two and three note polyphonics from the throat, accompanied by occasional percussion and ceremonial horns in trance-inducing meditations to the Buddhist deities Yamantaka and Mahakala. Cosmic harmony and tolerance are well served by these uplifting incantations which constitute some of the best recordings of this uniquely Tibetan sacred music. A bonus to this spiritual and transcendental endeavor is a track by Mickey Hart, Phillip Glass, and Kitaro, live in front of an audience (and the monks) in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. --Derek Rath

Well if you want to know what tibet chanting is about ,this is it.if not open minded you might not be open to this at first, but if you just think about what these peaceful monks are doing and understand why they are chanting you might change your mind and your outlook.I am very good friends with the lead chanter SONAM.He is not a monk anymore but he still has the peace that all sentient beings desire. This cd is wonderful..an even better one is THE GYUTO MONKS:tibetan tantric choir(from 1987).ENJOY and FREE TIBET

    Amazon.com essential recording

Recorded in the late 1960s, the strong gospel soul hymns and idealistic moral gospel folksongs on Freedom Highway represent the Staple Singers' artistic apex. Pops Staples's reverb-saturated guitar hangs alone in the air while Mavis and the other family members' voices encircle it with warm sounds and defiant words. All this music is 100 percent amazing--from Pops's poignant delivery of "Be Careful Of The Stones That You Throw" to the group's terrific, invigorating civil rights anthem "Freedom Highway" and a cover of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" that adds new dimensions of meaning to the hippie hit. Too poppy to be considered mainstream gospel but not as watered- down as the group became in their mid-1970s pop phase, the Staple Singers' late-'60s music easily ranks alongside the era's hit makers, far outstripping their talent with little flash and pure, lovely sounding conviction. --Mike McGonigal

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Unique Gospel.......2002-07-24

The Staple Singers had one of the more original sounds in gospel. Not the spiritual doo-wop of the quartets, and not the organ and vocal gymnastics of the choirs. Instead, the Staples were a family with great vocal styles and clear, "bright" guitar. It's the gospel version of Mississippi Delta country-blues - think of a sanctified John Lee Hooker on tour with his daughters. "Freedom Highway" is an excellent recording, and one of the best examples of the Staples' early sound.

5 out of 5 stars Freedom Highway by the Staple Singers is incomparable!!.......2001-03-04

I only recently discovered the Staple Singers, but when I hear Mahalia Jackson's voice, I just want to scream like a groupie (and I'm 38!) I just feel saddened by the fact that I did not discover them 'till now. Freedom Highway is upbeat and soulful. I can listen to it over and over. The Staple Singer's gospel songs are moving and timeless. I recommend this album highly!

4 out of 5 stars Where is the "ORIGINAL" Freedom Highway???.......2000-12-22

This CD is a fine Staple Singers CD; BUT IT IS NOT THE ORIGINAL "FREEDOM HIGHWAY RELEASED ON EPIC RECORDS!" I really get upset with record companies who try to re-write history. The original "Freedom Highway" was recorded live at a church in Chicago on Epic Records. It was the best and in my mind is the best "live" gospel album I have ever heard. Legacy put out this CD with the same title as the original and only put on a couple of tracks from it. Come on Legacy! You're great at what you do. Please, Please, Please release the original Freedom Highway!

4 out of 5 stars Good album--but why not reissue the original one?.......2000-07-20

This is indeed the Staple Singers at their peak, a period crowned by the live recording of "Freedom Highway." But originally that song opened a whole album recorded live in a church, complete with Pops Staples' comments between songs, the handclapping and responses of the congregation, and so on. Hey, Epic Records: reissue the complete original "Freedom Highway" (with bonus tracks, if anything was left out!)! And if you ever see the original LP for sale, grab it! A real gem!
