And just like that, the "swing thing" disappeared. Of course, San Francisco's Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers were at it years before the revival took hold and were always a cut above the rest of the pack anyway. That's because Smith and her pianist and musical director Chris Siebert have such a deep wealth of musical knowledge to draw on, the courage and good taste to recruit world-class veteran players from across the jazz world, and a passion and respect for the style of music they play. Boasting a buoyant mix of boogie-woogie, jump blues, sophisticated swing, and even bebop, 2000's Everybody's Talkin' follows up their enormously successful indie debut, One Hour Mama, which sold nearly 40,000 copies in the 3 years after its release on their own Fat Note label. The crafty arrangements, courtesy of Siebert and big-time Ellington expert David Berger, never get in the way of momentum or mood. It all revolves around Smith's versatile voice, which can convey strength and vulnerability, innocence and smut, sweetness and wickedness--often all at once. --Marc Greilsamer

This is quirky pop record from 2 guys from Canada. This is great CD for those who like a little variety, satire and spirituality in their music

enjoyed her piano jazz sultry voice- every song on the album is worth listening to.

5 out of 5 stars Second album is even better than the first!.......2007-04-02

Nice job with songs that hit the spot! New and exciting singer - great backup talent also.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2005-12-03

Lavay Smith brings back the torchsongs of the 40s, backing herself with some of the best musicians from the Big Band era. A welcome respite from the overprocessed music being churned out. Truly spectacular.

5 out of 5 stars A worthy addition to any music collection.......2005-11-24

This album conveys everything you want in in a jazz album with a swing emphasis. A great introduction to those not already immersed in jazz, yet satisfying to those with an understanding of the evolution of jazz and possessing a music collection to match. Lavay Smith has a voice that transcends genre, emotion, and the vast majority of modern singers of any category. The musicianship stands out on this album; she is backed by a top-notch band. Great music for parties, driving, and as a conversation backdrop.

5 out of 5 stars Billie Holiday of modern days!.......2004-06-24

She's singin' like a Billie Holiday, and Red Hot Skillet Lickers is great band! But they don't just imitate! This is one helluva record!

4 out of 5 stars A great opportunity to reconsider an artist who is largely forgotten today........2006-10-14

While his time in the national spotlight was relatively brief, one can certainly make the argument that Harry Nilsson was among the most influential singer/songwriters of the 1970's. Now more than three decades later RCA has seen fit to release a superb collection of his work.
"Everybody's Talkin': The Best of Harry Nilsson" features 14 of Nilsson finest recordings. Here you will find all 8 of his Top 40 Hits including such gems as "I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City", "Cocoanut", the #1 smash "Without You" as well as the title track of the collection "Everybody's Talkin" which many will recall was his first big hit back in the Fall of 1969. I also enjoyed hearing some of his less well known hits once again. It had been quite a while since I had heard "Me and My Arrow" and I had forgotten all about "Spaceman". What a great song! In fact, I can honestly say that I enjoyed all 14 tracks on this disc. These are the original RCA recordings you heard on the radio and the remastering job is terrific. I do have to admit that I was a little disappointed that Harry's haunting interpretation of the great 1930's standard "As Time Goes By" was not included here. Harry loved to record tunes from that period and I would have hoped that at least one of them would have been included on this disc.
At the end of the day "Everybody's Talkin': The Best of Harry Nilsson" is a solid four star offering. This is certainly a disc you can enjoy again and again. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Nilsson Talks again.......2006-06-26

Harry Nilsson came of age as a songwriter and performer during the infamous Sixties, when anything seemed possible. The advantage for songwriters was that you weren't pigeonholed into a genre, and this collection of vintage Nilsson songs shows the range of a great talent. "One" and "Without Her" are the best pop music has ever offered a too-ravenous public, and "Everybody'sTalkin'" shows Nilsson's ability to sum up the spirit of a movie in a four-minute song. The whimsical "Me and My Arrow" and "The Moonbeam Song" show off another side of this man's talent in reminding us of the rapturous delight of everyday life. He died too young, as many great talents do, and that's a shame. We need his talent and life spark in these bleak days for pop music.

3 out of 5 stars Dig a little deeper and go for Greatest Hits.......2006-06-05

For another 3 bucks (as of this writing), you get 21 songs instead of just 14.

This does have two songs not on GH--"Turn Your Radio On" and "All I Do Is Think About You." For most, these won't compensate for the loss of "1941", "Cuddly Toy", "Girlfriend", "The Puppy Song", "Living Without You", "Good Old Desk", "You're Breakin' My Heart", "Don't Forget Me", and "As Time Goes By". The earliest of these, especially "1941", show why the Beatles raved about Nilsson way back when. "You're Breakin' My Heart" is notable for its free use of the "F" word; funny, but maybe not essential. "As Time Goes By" was a minor hit from a standards album (A Touch of Schmillson in the Night) that was as uncommercial a move then as it is commercial now. Go figure.

This man was brilliant. And that's coming from someone who is not a long-time fan; I only knew his biggest hits before buying GH. Spend a little and get a lot more. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing talent.......2004-03-22

I have all of Harry's albums in vinyl and then re-purchased them in the CD format, but this is the best, most eclectic and definitive sampling of his musical catalog. Nilsson was fabulous and is so under-appreciated today, though I can't figure out why. His voice is timeless and his songs are treasures. I loved him as a child in the 70's and grew up on his dulcet-toned voice filtering through the house. I figured anyone that hung out with Ringo and John Lennon had to be the apex of cool, and he certainly was that.

This double album encompases his greatest hits as well as some of his lesser known ballads. Not only could Harry write beautiful songs, he sang some awesome cover versions, such as "Over the Rainbow," which would give even Judy Garland a run for her money. A stellar, poignant performance.

There is one serious omission, here. I think the most lovely song Harry ever recorded was "Remember," which had a brief revival when it was included in the trivial Tom Hanks movie, "You've Got Mail." This introduced Nilsson to a generation who was robbed of his talent through his premature and untimely death. This is a good collection of his work, though "Remember" is sorely missed. I can't imagine anyone with good taste not appreciating this man's body of work. Beautiful stuff.

4 out of 5 stars wonderful mix of songs for adults and children.......1999-03-05

This is a fun album for kids. I found myself singing along with the songs. Children find the songs easy to learn and sing along.

4 out of 5 stars One of the great high tenor voices you'll ever hear..........2006-07-18

...and he knows how to put together a great record, too. I got this CD last year, along with a bunch of other bluegrass and country CDs, while spending a week in Nashville. I played this one the most. Mr. Brewster sings harmony in Ricky Skaggs' band, Kentucky Thunder, but his lead voice is stunning. The song selection is great - Fred Neil's Everybody's Talkin... Kristofferson's Darby's Castle...a few lesser-known tunes that are nonetheless really strong. He also puts his stamp on Kentucky Waltz, a showpiece for high tenor singers in bluegrass. And no matter how many times you've heard it, you'll never get tired of Mr. Brewster's version. I'm ready for his next record - it's way overdue.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST.......2004-08-25

Don't let this album slip through your hands! A must have for any music collection!

4 out of 5 stars Mr. Paul Brewster.......2004-02-07

Brewster's voice alone is worth the price. It starts with an excellent interpretation of "Everybody's Talkin'". The song is just excellent. Some excellent work. Most of his buddies from Ricky Skaggs band play and/or sing on this record. I would have to say the most beautiful song is "Kentucky Waltz". The violins and the singing and the mandolins and the yeah.

But this isn't just a cover album, Brewster has many originals on as well. Stretching from his days back with the Knoxville grass to songs he's recently written. They do not dissapoint. I would actually say this sounds more of a gospel record than a country album, but that's just my opinion. If you like any style of country/bluegrass/gospel, you will love this.

    5 out of 5 stars a real treasure.......2006-09-27

Barry Martyn was responsible for bringing a number of New Orleans musicians, who were still musically active, to England in the mid sixties. He would schedule touring and accomodation for the visitors and the exposure to the British audience must have been joyous for all.
These recordings and others from this period are remarkable in many ways. The older Americans sound rejuvinated playing the music of their younger days and the Brits are playing as if they were born to it. It's clearly an excellent mix. The music just flows in an extremely relaxed way. There are many stand-out solos from Capt. John Handy, Cuff Billet, Kid Sheik Cola, Frank Brooker, Louis Nelson, Bill Greenlow, and Richard Simmons. Brian Turnock, as usual, is excellent on the bass and Barry Martyn really is one of the great New Orleans style drummers. He's also a tireless champion for the music. He writes, produces, tours, lectures, and plays old tyme New Orleans music. He's in charge of the American Music catalogue, one of George Buck's labels, and THE label that issues historically important music by the likes of George Lewis, Bunk Johnson, and Kid Thomas Valentine.
There are nine tunes from the Morgan band and eight tunes from the Piron band. It's all beautifully recorded and you get well over an hour's worth of music. It really is a superb release that will continue to give you much enjoyment through the years to come.

"Everybody's Talkin'" wasn't the first song Nilsson submitted as the theme for Midnight Cowboy (1969) but it was the one that ultimately (to Nilsson's surprise and even disappointment) was chosen. And it was a significant contribution to making the film such a great success. It was also the song that brought international attention to Nilsson's singular gifts both as a singer and as a songwriter. Offering depth of emotion and humor combined with a purity and sweetness of tone, Nilsson (who never, ever toured) was hugely talented--performing his own compositions or those of others. This compilation includes Randy Newman's touching "Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear" and the painful "One" (is the Loneliest Number)--where Nilsson's voice twists sinuously around the notes as if physically exploring the dimensions of aloneness. To get a taste of Nilsson's immense talent, Everybody's Talkin' is a perfect entree with beautiful orchestrations and top-quality production values.
