Terry Baucom and Alan Bibey logged decades of prime bluegrass experience in such bands as Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, IIIrd Tyme Out, and Boone Creek, and their current group BlueRidges follow-up to Common Ground shines with the kind of confidence such resumés foster. In building their sound more around four-part Southern gospel singing than progressive instrumental interpretations, they carry on the bedrock bluegrass tradition, centering much of their repertoire around religious numbers such as the a cappella "Shifting Sands" and the call-and-response "My Lords Going to Set Me Free." And by spicing things up with such hot picking as Bibeys banjo-driven instrumental "Vandiver" and the hard-luck love songs "Rock Hearts," "Its All My Fault," and Charlie Moores "The Fiddler," they keep an impressive hand in the secular scene. But even with Ed Biggerstaffs thrilling tenor vocal on "The New John Henry Blues," this is still largely an album for stay-at-home Sunday mornings, equally nurturing to spirit and soul. --Alanna Nash

Incredible Listening Experience - - A Historic Session !.......2000-12-08
I "rediscovered" this INCREDIBLE LP after a 14 year hiatus after a brief chat with Giacomo Gates, a great Eddie Jefferson influenced vocalist who's material can also be found at Amazon. I had stopped listening to it NOT because it wore out (fat chance !) but because I had converted a lot of tunes to tape and a lot of them were on the now out of print THERE I GO, THERE I GO Prestige compilation. Eventually the album got burried deep down in the stack and today, I was determined to relive it !
Release on the tail of his highly acclaimed "BODY AND SOUL" LP, Eddie was clearly energized by his newfound fame. Though he'd been in the game tap dancing and vocalizing on the side for almost thirty years by then, he spent the previous six in virtual obscurity working a day job... by the time Come Along With Me Came out, clearly he was in good spirits... and eager to embrace not only his roots in bop and swing, but the mergence of rock and soul in that fall of 1969... what you hear then is an all star session that at times swings hard (check out Yardbird Sweet, Dexter Digs In, When You're Smiling, and Its Only A Paper Moon, which he reworked as Come Along With Me) and at other times gets quite funky, from the gospelly Son of a Preacher Man, to his funky Soul Jazz renditions of Please Leave Me Alone and The Preacher... and of course, his mastery of ballads. Overall, this is an energizing listening experience lead by Eddie's brilliant and imaginative storytelling abilities as a vocalist and an all star ensemble including a whirling Charles McPherson on alto sax, Barry Harris on Piano, a screaming Bill Hardman on drumpet, Bill English on drums, and Gene Taylor on bass.
There is no question in my mind that while this album may not be as popular, its up there as one of the great Jazz recordings of all time and one of those sessions that may have been typical Autumn day for some, but in one studio atleast was a momentuos chapter in the annals of Modern Jazz. The studio was on fire... and Eddie swung hard. - - If you've ever been to a jam session in the community where patrons have been known to walk in in possession of their own tambourines... and everyone is up and dancing - - even to John Coltrane, be it on the bandstand or the juke box... this album will take you there ! ! !

Customer Reviews:
A Real Find!.......2003-08-20
These are mostly recreations from the piano roll elaborations that Gershwin recorded himself. Unfortunately the technology at the time Gershwin made them was fairly primitive and it created a kind of rhythmic strait-jacket for his playing. So what Gibbons has done is play the same notes Gershwin played, but subtly free the rhythms so that they sound spontaneous. And do they!
The CD includes a solo piano version of 'Rhapsody in Blue' based on Gershwin's own two-piano arrangement. Also recorded is the slow movement from the 'Concerto in F.' Both are done beautifully.
There is a dynamite performance of 'I'd Rather Charleston,' a tune hardly remembered today. And then there's Gershwin's own patented version (here perfectly mimicked) of 'Fascinating Rhythm.' And on and on.
This is 67 minutes of sheer joy!

Excellent performer.......2007-03-09
I'm fascinating.
A unique project.......2006-11-23
Gershwin historical, manic, perfect, archival.......2006-06-12
Second: Jack Gibbons plays (and has recorded) the Alkan op 39 etudes (he probably plays a lot more Alkan than that). For those of you not in the know, this is to say he has world-class chops, indeed history-class (Liszt, who never played his friend Alkan, at least in public). But it's also to say that Gibbons knows how to interpret and personalize fantastically difficult piano music. For me, his Alkan op 39 is personal and passionate and real (contrast the facile and over-pedalled Hamelin and the just-the-notes-ma'me Ringeissen). An appreciation of Gibbons' Alkan is important here because while his Alkan is uniquely personal (as such music must be, no matter how hard it is to play) his Gershwin is deliberately impersonal...which is to say: no pianist, no singer would want to reproduce what Gibbons has given us in these 4 cd's, and in fact few listeners will be able to listen for long to these 4 cd's without a respite, a break , some silence, some minimal styling from somebody (anybody) else...which brings me to
Third: This is an archive, not a recital. This is a library, not a program. There is no track-by-track contrast of moods here, no track-by-track concession to easy listening, varied delight, any more than a library shelf of novels is alphabetized by authors' last names as a concession to mood or fancy or taste of the searching patron. This is the documented Gershwin in his recording mode: manic, notey, clever, "on", and never, as generations of stylists found in him, ravishing, tender, longing, sweet, glad, hopeful...person-to-person, in a word. I can listen to these cd's about half an hour at a time, max. This is Gerwhsin, not Gibbons. And this is just one side of Gershwin. He died at 38, in the summer. Brain tumor. A lot of pain.
Finally, Jack Gibbons has given the world a uniquely valuable and easily available resource. Gibbons could now do us a service by playing us some Gershwin as he feels it, as it hits him and makes him sing (as Gershwin, our American Schubert, does to all of us, and as I think Alkan has done to Gibbons). I would love to see a Gershwin stylings by Gibbons now that Gibbons himself has made sure Gershwin in his authenticity is safe and sound.
Definative.......2005-07-23
Gibbons, according to a family friend and biographer Edward jablonski "recreates Gershwin's style." I'll never know. I can say this is a lively recording and has the perfect balance. It's neither stuffy and plodding or cute.
