4 out of 5 stars Lots of "gems" for the Gentry fan.......2005-07-28

This British compilation contains several songs unavailable on any other Bobbie Gentry CD and is well worth the price tag. Some songs can be found on other collections (such as "Ode to Billie Jo" and "Mississippi Delta") but where this collection shines is with the hard-to-find recordings such as "Greyhound Goin' Nowhere", "Natural to Be Gone, and "Seasons Come, Seasons Go."

"Natural to Be Gone" is a John Hartford song that has only been recorded by a few artists, and is, in my opinion, one of his best songs. Glen Campbell used to close his tv show with this number- I don't know why it wasn't a hit. I prefer it to the more well-known "Gentle on My Mind" (also on this CD). Bobbie Gentry adds some new verses & lyrics not found on any Hartford recordings-- I'm not sure if he wrote them or she did, but they add a unique touch and depth to the original Hartford recordings. The duet version of "Gentle on My Mind" also contains a verse not usually found on other recordings.

Some of the recordings are over-produced and the orchestration almost drowns out Gentry's and Campbell's voices on some of the songs, but this is a great way to hear some unique gems. I've been a fan of hers since 1967 and while this CD isn't quite worth 5 stars(I'll save that for the album "Patchwork"-- the songs show up on her CD, "Bobbie Gentry: An American Quilt" ), it's got some great moments.

A must-have for a Gentry fan.

Album Description

2007 double CD collection from the singer/songwriter best known for the hit 'Ode To Billie Joe'. Gentry was one of the first Country artists to write and produce most of her own work and although she came out of Nashville during the mid '60s, her Pop flavored sound was innovative and helped pave way for other strong-minded talented female Country performers. This comprehensive collection spans her years with Capitol Records 1967-1971. EMI.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection.......2007-07-19

What were Billy Joe and the girl in the song throwing off the Tallahatchie Bridge?

Why did Billy Joe jump off later?

"Ode to Billy Joe" launched Bobbie Gentry's career with a mystery that nobody's ever quite solved. In interviews, Ms. Gentry claimed she didn't know, either. The movie inspired by this song had a theory--but I suspect everyone who loves this song has their own thoughts.

That song, sadly, was the biggest hit Gentry had, but there's a lot more to this Mississippi girl with a voice reminiscent of hard liquor and hot peppers.

The songs in this collection are about real life--and much of it is hard. "Fancy" is about a poor girl whose mother can't care for her, so she buys her daughter a fancy dress--and tells her to go out and make her living.

There's also a lot of historical vignettes here. "Rainmaker" which was popularized by the 5th Dimension talks about a rainmaker coming to Kansas to stop a drought--and the dire consequences when the town doesn't pay him.

"Papa's Medicine Show" talks about the itinerant families selling medicines around the turn of the 19th century:

One bottle, two bottle, three bottle, four
Mama looks twenty, but she's really eighty four...

And the harsh reality for the family who 'just sold enough liniment to barely get along.'

Papa started ailing and passed away last fall
We all had to pick cotton to pass the funeral hall...

This is a great collection of folkloric country. If you missed Gentry the first time around, you might want to give her a listen. She's definitely worth the time.

My one complaint about this CD is it could have been re-engineered to sound a little less like the original vinyl album I bought. The sound is very monaural and something of a disappointment at the price for the 2-disk set.

3 out of 5 stars Such harsh sounds for such a fine artist!.......2007-03-28

Yikes! I've been eagerly awaiting someone to reissue Bobbie Gentry's back catalogue on cd and was thrilled to learn that UK-based Zonophone planned to do the deed. They started with this compilation billed as the Best of the Capitol Years (which is a silly subtitle as she only ever recorded for Capitol, but oh well). It's easy to forgive the titular foolishness, but the mastering on this is another matter. It's an utter mess. The vocals seem to be pushed way to the front and sound harsh; the instrumentation fades into a background mush on subtle tracks such as "Sweet Peony." "Casket Vignette," for example, sounds as if it were mastered from a cassette tape that had been run over by a John Deere tractor. I hope to goodness that they figure out what Bobbie Gentry sounds like before they release the albums!

The rare and unreleased tracks make this a must-own for diehards like me. For neophytes, there are much better Bobbie Gentry comps out there. The organization principle on this is clever (self-penned tunes on disc 1, covers on disc 2), but not especially revelatory or interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Seven Tracks Not Yet on Other CDs.......2007-03-13

I don't have this yet (the star rating is simply for the songs). But as of March 12, 2007, I count seven tracks here that I never have found on any other Bobbie Gentry album CDs, "best of" CDs or compilation CDs. That includes four songs that apparently never were available on vinyl, either ("Windows of the World," "Smoke," "Siepe" and "Citta E'Grande"). The other three never-before-on-CD are "Delta Man" and "Rainmaker" from Gentry's "Fancy" album, and "But I Can't Get Back" from "Patchwork."

(UPDATE: Two days after posting this review, I heard from someone at Australian label Raven Records that they will be releasing a two-for-one CD of "Fancy" and "Patchwork" "in about two months" -- which would put the release date around May 2007. Raven already has released an excellent-sounding two-for-one of Gentry's "The Delta Sweete" and "Local Gentry," which also includes bonus tracks.)

Here's the full breakdown of what is on this new 2-CD collection: six tracks are from "Ode to Billie Joe," six from "The Delta Sweete," four from "Local Gentry," six from "Touch 'Em With Love," five from "Fancy," four from "Patchwork," five non-album tracks that previously have appeared on other compilations, and the four otherwise unavailable tracks.

Even taking this new compilation into account, two tracks from "Fancy" ("Something in the Way He Moves" and "If You Gotta Make a Fool of Somebody") and four tracks from "Patchwork" ("Miss Clara/Azusa Sue," "Jeremiah," "Belinda" and "Mean Stepmama Blues") never have appeared on CD, so far as I know. Which means the upcoming Raven label two-for-one of those two albums still will be a required purchase for any Gentry fanatic!

In addition to her smash hit "Ode to Billie Joe," this 20-track British compilation of Bobbie Gentry's music includes four duets with Glen Campbell--"All I Have to Do Is Dream," "Walk Right Back," "Little Green Apples," and "Mornin' Glory"--and three covers of Beatles songs--"The Fool on the Hill," "Eleanor Rigby," and "Here, There, and Everywhere." Other songs include "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," "Something in the Way He Moves," "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head," "Seasons Come, Seasons Go," "Son of a Preacher Man," "You've Made Me So Very Happy," "Mississippi Delta," "Tobacco Road," "Where's the Playground, Johnny?," "Gentle on My Mind," "In the Ghetto," and "My Elusive Dreams."

Album Description

Bobbie Gentry did not record many albums but several compilations have been released. Because Bobbie only had a few big hits that have to be included, the remainder of each compilation often differs significantly. This UK compilation includes plenty of cover versions, some of which were duets with Glen Campbell. Of course, this compilation includes 'Ode To Billie Joe' & 'I'll Never Fall In Love Again' (a British number one hit). The covers include 'Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head' (B J Thomas), four Beatles classics, 'Son Of A Preacher Man' (Dusty Springfield), 'You've Made Me So Very Happy' (Blood Sweat & Tears), 'In The Ghetto' (Elvis Presley) and two Everly Brothers covers, which account for half of the Glen Campbell duets. 20 tracks in all. EMI. 2005.

5 out of 5 stars A nice compilation.......2005-10-13

Bobbie Gentry did not record many albums but several compilations have been released. Because Bobbie only had a few big hits that have to be included, the remainder of each compilation often differs significantly. This UK compilation includes plenty of cover versions, some of which were duets with Glen Campbell. There are very few original songs here but other compilations of Bobbie's music (particularly those compiled and released in America) feature Bobbie's original material heavily.

Of course, this compilation includes Ode to Billie Joe (an American number one and British top twenty hit) and I'll never fall in love again (a British number one hit). Perhaps these two songs, more than anything else, show the difference in tastes between British and American listeners. Ode to Billie Joe is a Bobbie Gentry original - a classic country song with a bluesy edge. Contrast that with I'll never fall in love again, a mainstream pop song written by Bacharach and David, first recorded by Dionne Warwick (and not to be confused with the Tom Jones hit of the same title). Following her British success, Bobbie became a TV presenter and this affected her recordings - she sometimes selected material that would appeal to her TV audience.

Bobbie had a minor international hit with Raindrops keep falling on my head, but B J Thomas had the big American hit with this song while Sacha Distel had the big UK hit, so Bobbie's version is generally regarded as a cover. Among the other covers here are four Beatles classics, these being Something in the way he moves, The fool on the hill, Eleanor Rigby and Here there and everywhere. Son of a preacher man was a huge hit for Dusty Springfield. You've made me so very happy was originally written and recorded by Motown's Brenda Holloway, but it was Blood sweat and tears who had the hit. In the ghetto was a transatlantic hit for Elvis Presley. Tobacco Road was a UK top ten hit for the Nashville Teens (a British R+B group despite their name). Two Everly Brothers covers feature among the Glen Campbell duets, one of which (All I have to do is dream) became a UK top three hit for Glen and Bobbie.

This is a great collection of Bobbie's music despite being somewhat short of original material. Nevertheless, this collection was compiled for the British market and the presence of so many familiar songs will help UK sales.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not quite up there with "Bobbie Gentry-The Capitol Years".......2005-09-19

Being a Bobbie Gentry fan, I've NEVER came across a release (greatest hits or otherwise) that I DID NOT like. However, while reaching it's mark, including 'Tobacco Road' and a few others, which include more Glen Campbell duets, the remaining tracks do not strike me personally, as one of her 'best' Greatest Hit's CDs. The tracks featured, do not 'hit home' as do the ones on 'The Capitol Years.' However, it does without doubt, surpass many of the previous 'Greatest Hits' CDs that were available. A personally missed song, 'Steal Away' a beautiful number rarely included in her Greatest Hit's work, and I would have liked to have seen this one on this CD, but you win some and you loose some. Overall, I give this CD a '4' not quite getting 'all' the songs on one compilation, most like to hear. Unbelievably, 'Fancy' (another HUGE Gentry hit, secondary only to 'Ode To Billy Joe' in the US) is not included - a song associated with 'Gentry' even if they remember Reba McEntire's excellent remake) 'The Girl From Cincinatti' is another desperately missed ditty which adds longivity to ANY 'best of' CDs of which it is inculded. My suggestion is: If you are going to make a 'very best of' CD, and NOT include the 'greatest hits' then go for MANY, and not just a couple of 'elusive' songs mixed with a few of the largly known songs. That no doubt, would make for a better recieved work.
