Can't Run from Yourself

Thirteen years old in 1972, with a deep, throaty voice and weird gothic material, Tanya Tucker made LeAnn Rimes sound like the Olsen twins. Nearly 15 years later, Tucker returned from country-radio exile to launch an ongoing and rewarding (commercially and artistically) comeback with Capitol. This 1992 album falls around the halfway point, and while you might be better off seeking a greatest-hits package to skim Tucker's recent highlights, you can hear much of what makes her so cherishable. Which is her voice and personality. She's still got that rockabilly growl, richer and attractively weathered, and an iconoclastic spunk that's increasingly rare in Nashville. These qualities are shown off to good effect here on the typical rockabilly-lite hit "It's a Little Too Late" and the rollicking, good-natured Delbert McClinton duet "Tell Me About It." These same qualities are neutralized on the sentimental eternal-love story songs that dot her albums (this edition features "Two Sparrows in a Hurricane") and a series of bland ballads. Best of all are a couple of smoldering bluesy numbers, "Danger Ahead" and the Robert Cray-like title track, exciting vocal showcases for one of America's true originals. --Ken Barnes

This is a mature and sassy CD with plenty of top tunes!
Most of the songs are ballads, but the lyrics are strong and it will defnitely become a favourite!

5 out of 5 stars Another Tanya masterpiece.......2003-09-21

This was one of Tanya's biggest selling albums, containing three country top ten hits. The standout song is Two sparrows in a hurricane, which has become one of Tanya's signature songs. Tell me about it is a brilliant duet with Delbert McClinton. The opening track, It's a little too late, is an excellent foot-stomping song that was successfully revived by Mark Chesnutt only four years later.

Besides those three hits, the album has plenty of other great songs. Can't run from yourself is a great song that was surely considered for single release. Rainbow rider is a song with a western theme, not to be confused with a similarly titled song, also with a western theme, that Sylvia recorded on her Drifter album a decade earlier. Danger ahead is a great bluesy song to close the album. The other songs - Don't let me be the last to know, I've learned to live, What do they know and Half the moon - show Tanya singing tender ballads in her own distinctive style.

This is one of many brilliant albums that Tanya recorded and is an essential album for all Tanya fans, with much to interest the casual buyer too.

5 out of 5 stars Tanya Is The Best........2000-06-23

I Have Been A Tanya Fan Since I Was A Kid. She Has A Great Voice. My Mom And I Like The Balled "Two Sparrows In A Hurricane". It Is A Very Sad Song. The Dance Tune "It's A Little Too Late" Can Make You Get Up And Tap Your Toes On The Dance Floor. Mark Chesnutt Did Another Version Of The Same Words In 1996. The Duet With Delbert McClinton "Tell Me About It" Is Also A Dance Song. This CD Is Great For Any Tanya Fan.

4 out of 5 stars She is a very fine singer. Tanya expresses herself well........1998-06-24

Tanya seems to have a fine personality. I enjoy her singing and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Great 1920s-30s German Cabaret Revival.......2001-08-14

I've not come across an album yet by the Palast Orchester mit Max Raabe that I haven't loved. It's been a long time since German cabaret chansons have been acceptable (salonfähig) again, and it's been a loss - many of the songs (all in Geman) are very tounge-in-cheek, and Max Raabe is a genius in his smooth and comic delivery. This album, as well as the others by this band, is a combination of old standards and new material written by the Orchester, and they flow seamlessly into each other. One of their funniest albums, not available on Amazon yet, is "Die Hits des Jahres," a great retooling of many of the pop hits of 2000, including Britney Spears' "Oops I did it again" - an absolute scream! Give this album a try - it's like nothing else out there!
