Bed by the Window

Raw, high lonesome bluegrass is the language James King speaks best. King's road band, recording with him here for the first time, abet his singing ideally, especially the tenor of mandolinist Kenny Prater, who squeezes the heart with his harmonies on the title song. King's preference for a wailing, frayed vocal style nicely folds into his noted partiality for 1960s country and folk, represented here by tunes from the pens of Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb, and Stonewall Jackson. Old-timey bluegrass sprouts are everywhere, too. "Wear a Red Rose" kicks the CD off in high gear, and Damon Black's "Tall Pines" and Moon Mullican's lovely "Sweeter than the Flowers" offer a solid one-two succession with the hollering tune being followed by a somber waltz. King shares with Del McCoury and few others an equally rooted and fresh bluegrass vision. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Bluegrass CD........2003-07-07

I have been listening to playing bluegrass for over 10 years now.
This album is a very good example of raditional bluegrass.
Bluegrass is the root of all country music.
Keep Pickin'...

5 out of 5 stars Jes Plain Bluegrass.......2001-01-26

In the days of Earl and Flat comes one that "strings" in their essence. One who tells it better but needs more musical background. Why I give it a 5 star rate. So much of bluegrass is commercialized with the hillbilly show and shown most of us as kinda down home folk with no sense on the "real world". James has mixed the both with some mind bogglin thoughts to his style. Surely and underated artist with lots of insights. Potters Field....is just one....then the way he pours his heart into "Bed By The Window" is just a small example of the man's talent.

4 out of 5 stars the stuff of bluegrass greatness.......1999-01-02

The tradition of hard-driving, soulful mountain bluegrass lives on in James King, but this is not music for the faint of heart. Like the great bluesmen, honkytonkers, and Appalachian balladeers, his world is defined by heartbreak, despair, and death. It is hard to imagine a bleaker song than the title tune, a fable about the illusions that sustain us in the face of our shared mortality. I guess another way to put it is this: the bone-headed cliche about bluegrass -- that it's just "pickin' and grinnin'" -- doesn't apply here. King has the stuff of bluegrass greatness in him, an unflinching singer who gives the listener a sense of how George Jones would have sounded if, instead of Lefty Frizzell, he'd chosen to follow Bill Monroe. The material here, one should add, is uniformly first-rate. It's good to have Damon Black's too-seldom-recorded "Tall Pines" revived, and Richard Farina's folk-era standard "Pack up Your Sorrows," the closest King gets to anything hopeful, is a delight and a surprise. For all his obsession with death, King proves just how much life remains in the deepest veins of bluegrass.

4 out of 5 stars Baltimore Consort Box.......2005-05-03

If you're lucky enough to actually find this collection scoop it up. I'll at least tell you what this collection really is, which they don't tell you above.

This is a three disk set of previously released albums.

Disk 1 is On The Banks Of The Helicon
Disk 2 is Watkins Ale
Disk 3 is La Rocque 'n' Roll

All deliver the rich vibrant sound that one expects from the Baltimore Consort, and contains a fair number SCA Dance tunes. If you're looking for a 'best of' collection to augment the BC CDs you already have, there isn't one. But if you're looking to get the CDs, these 3 come in this tidy package.

Music Album:

  1. Best Ever Country Drinking Songs [Import]
  2. Best of Barbara Mandrell [Import]
  3. Borderland
  4. Braver Newer World
  5. Bruce Molsky & Big Hoedown
  6. Can't Run from Yourself
  7. Can You Hear Me When I Talk to You/I'm the Girl [CD-single]
  8. Classic Country: 1965-1969
  9. Clinch Mountain Gospel
  10. Collection [Import]
