The Glory Road

Sometimes it takes the genius and adoration of a small record label like Chicago's Numero to unearth a bounty virtually fictional but for the several hundreds who listened and observed a half-century ago. Born in 1923, Fern Jones was a gifted songwriter with a deep-from-the-chest singing voice that was as much Lightnin' Hopkins as it was Patsy Cline. Her husband a preacher, Jones left the honky-tonks to perform by his side in Pentecostal churches and revival tents during the forties and fifties, her original and traditional gospel hymns always dotted with the blues and pop variations that inspired her. What those fortunate few were able to witness was put to vinyl by Dot Records in 1959, backed by noted Elvis studio musicians Hank Garland (guitar) and Floyd Cramer (piano), and available here for the first time since. It includes six Jones originals, including "I Was There When It Happened," covered by Johnny Cash during his first session for Sun Records. Fern Jones died in 1996, but thankfully--though 50 years after the fact--her music lives on with the vitality and clarity her underappreciated talent provided. --Scott Holter

Product Description:
Patsy on Jesus. Elvis without the pelvis.

Her lone 1959 album brought to church music the same kind of untamed energy that young white Southerners were bringing to their rock 'n roll. Features heretofore unknown work by Nashvilles's A-team session players, Floyd Cramer, Hank "Sugarfoot" Garland, Joe Zinkan, and Buddy Harman.

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Album Description

2007 digitally remastered and expanded two CD set from the Deep Purple vocalist's solo recordings featuring the albums Glory Road and For Gillan Fans Only, the limited edition album given away with early copies of Glory Road plus two bonus tracks. Released in August 1980 on Virgin Records, Glory Road again featured the classic line-up of Ian Gillan, Bernie Tormé, John McCoy, Colin Towns, and Mick Underwood. As a result of the band's constant touring, the album entered the UK album chart at # 3. This was in no small part attributable to the first 15000 pressings featuring a free bonus 10 track album entitled For Gillan Fans Only. The two additional bonus tracks were originally b-sides: 'Handles On Her Hips' and 'I Might As Well Go Home'. 21 tracks. Edsel.

5 out of 5 stars Real Hard Rock.......2007-05-21

Glory Road is an album by the hard rock band "Gillan," which was released in October of 1980 and peaked at #3 in the U.K. album charts. This is a powerful record with loads of fantastic songs which show the legendary Ian Gillan at his rocking best, full of energy, confidence and using those powerful lungs and throat he's best known for. This album features Gillan's most famous line-up of Bernie Tormé, Colin Towns, John McCoy, Mick Underwood and of course Ian Gillan. This lineup also released two other albums, Mr. Universe and Future Shock. If you love Deep Purple MKII, you can't go wrong with this CD, it's real hard rock at its very best! There's also a great bonus CD, "For Gillan Fans Only" which was a pleasant surprise. Finally, the re-mastered CD sounds really good.

3 out of 5 stars These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

3 out of 5 stars The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

5 out of 5 stars "many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

Silva America presents the essential in film music during the period of World Wars ~ "Longest Day:Ultimate World War Movie Theme", featuring some long forgotten cues, 53 to be exact that sent chills and thrills into the pulses of world events ~ selections from a limited collectors edition that would make any "film-score-buff" green with envy.

Released to commemorate the sixth Anniversary of D-Day, never has there ever been such a tribute compilation package from any other label and Silva comes to the forefront ~ featuring The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (Paul Bateman, Nic Raine Tony Bremner and Carl Davis as conductors), The Philharmonia (Kenneth Alwyn, Jerry Goldsmith, Mario Klemens and Paul Bateman as conductors) and also the world renown Crouch End Festival Chorus (David Temple as choir master) ~ what a gathering of talented musicians and singers fill this collection supreme.

The lineup of composers is a Who's Who in the world of film music ~ John Addison, Tomaso Albinoni, Kenneth J. Alford, Paul Anka, John Barry, Arnold Bax, Elmer Bernstein, Eric Coates, Carl Davis, Klaus Doldinger, Antonin Dvorak, Benjamin Frankel, Gerald Fried, Hugo Friedhofer, Jerry Goldsmith, Ron Goodwin, Bernard Herrmann, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Jerome Moross, Alfred Newman, Clifton Parker, Alan Rawsthorne, Ryvichi Sakamoto, Lalo Schifrin, Gerard Schurmann, David Shire, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Williams, Gabriel Yared and Hans Zimmer ~ set the stage for compositional human drama while exploring the deepest troves of musical emotion ~ one masterpiece after another, each cue manages to display both a convincing authenticity of the times and places ~ experience every tracks passion and skill for striking the exotic orchestral colors, explosive power and spectacular works of full large scale orchestral arrangements previal at every turn.

We are grateful to James Fitzpatrick (producer), Reybnold da Silva (executive producer), Rick Clark (associate producer/album sequence), Marion Garden (associate producer) and the whole gang at Silva America who have resurrected many of the soundtracks for the "film-score-buffs" in all of us.

5 out of 5 stars See the movie, buy the soundtrack........2006-05-02

The Texas Western victory over Kentucky has got to be THE single most important game ever played in collegiate athletics. Only fitting that the soundtrack calls up the same emotion when you listen to it as watching the film surely does. Great songs, great artists, and great original scores. If you liked the movie, you gotta have this disc. GO MINERS!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great old music back again.......2006-03-20

If you liked the movie, then you'll enjoy spinning the tunes from those days again. The music gave thid flick some flair and Alicia Keys does some great stuff to update some great old tunes.

3 out of 5 stars Glory Road....not so glorious.......2006-02-25

A few good songs but not many. Very dissapointed. Not enough scores from the movie.

5 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful soundtrack.......2006-01-15

I bought this CD right after I saw Glory Road today. My favorite track is People Get Ready by Alicia Keys. This is a great song about how if we have faith in God anything is possible. I loved her soulful delivery on this song very much. The title track Glory Road is very uplifting. I love the choir singing on this track. I also enjoyed the track entitled I Will Make The Darkness Light. This is such a moving song about fighting for what you believe in. Alicia sounds so sexy on this song. There are also some classic R and B songs like Twist and Shout, Uptight, and Dancing In The Street. These are delighful songs to listen and move to. There is a song by Otis Redding entitled I've Been Loving You Too Long To Stop Now. This is a heartfelt sincere love song, and it is one of my favorites. This is a wonderful soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Soundtrack.......2006-01-14

Too often it seems as if a soundtrack is a "stand alone" product to the movie. In the case of Glory Road, the soundtrack and movie brilliantly weaves the story of the Texas Western basketball team and the society it faced at home and on the road. Glory Road is by far the best sports movie produced for the big screen. The soundtrack should be a part of anyone's collection who not only has an appreciation of R&B, but who also wants to place the music chronicled in a historical context.

5 out of 5 stars Living history.......1999-07-31

So shoot me. I like bagpipe music and I like fife and drum recordings and I like brass bands. Recently cruisin' the Internet brought me to the website of a company called Summit Records out in Arizona; and my eye was caught by the title (DCD 126) with a group calling itself The Americus Brass Band. I obtained a copy post haste and I want to all to know about it with equal rapidity. There is just short of 55 minutes of Civil War tunes played in a style that is "historically accurate, right down to the high military pitch and the clicking of the rotary valves on the original antique instruments employed" (as the notes tell us). The history of the band is available in those notes, so let me just dwell on the "music that still produces feelings of humor, joy, sadness, and patriotic pride." Well, what music does not produce at least one of those?--and I am not entirely sure there was anything about the Civil War of which we on either side should be particularly proud. But Sing a Song of Suffering seems to be an eternal way of making the best of a rotten situation during war time; and this CD is replete with such memories as "Tenting Tonight," "Amazing Grace," "Woodman, Spare That Tree," and even a little bit of the "William Tell Overture" and a Meyerbeer opera! In short, this is not the expected line up of soldier songs but selections that are "typical of that which might have been played by a group such as the Americus Brass band." I love it. Give it a try, please.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent in its own right and a great companion piece to Greatest Hits 1966-1992.......2005-09-22

It's a shame that this title is no longer in print. At the time of its release in 1992, Glory Road was the most comprehensive overview of Neil Diamond's spectacular five-year run with Uni/MCA. This album's release also coincided with the release of Columbia's own career retrospective, Greatest Hits 1966-1992. As such, it makes it difficult to review this set without referencing Columbia's competing product. While Columbia's set probably provides a better introduction to Diamond's entire body of work, licensing issues contributed to the malaise surrounding Greatest Hits 1966-1992, which was notoriously plagued by the substitution of all of the great Uni/MCA tracks with unbearable late-era live versions of those songs. Come to think of it, Columbia's faux pas probably helped boost the sales of MCA's offering, given that the MCA title boasted the original studio recordings of classics like Sweet Caroline, Cracklin' Rosie, I Am...I Said, Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show and Play Me.

Unlike all of MCA's previous Neil Diamond compilation albums, this one presents the material in chronological order. Each of Diamond's six studio albums for Uni/MCA is represented here with at least three or four tracks. Casual fans of His 12 Greatest Hits will revel in the treasure trove of excellent album cuts and other non-hits like Two-Bit Manchild, And the Grass Won't Pay No Mind, Glory Road, Juliet and the raucous live version of the otherwise unrecorded Lordy.

While MCA may have found it necessary to include a handful of covers, given the fact that cover songs were regularly sprinkled throughout several of Diamond's Uni/MCA era albums (particularly Touching You, Touching Me, Tap Root Manuscript and especially Stones), I personally would have jettisoned the covers in favor of Diamond originals like A Modern Day Version of Love (from Velvet Gloves and Spit), Cold Water Morning (from Tap Root Manuscript) and Captain Sunshine (from Moods). Nevertheless, what is presented here is undeniably excellent.

And given that Columbia saw it fit to present inferior live versions of the classic Uni/MCA material on their own '92 collection, Greatest Hits 1966-1992, it's only fair that MCA sneak a few Bang era nuggets into their set by using the great live versions of those songs originally found on presently out-of-print Gold (Live at the Troubadour) and Hot August Night (Live at the Greek). Hearing a raw, energetic rendition of Thank the Lord for the Night Time a mere three years after the original recording is far more palatable than listening to the awful abomination labeled Red, Red Wine on the Greatest Hits 1966-1992 set.

This set is an outstanding introduction to Neil Diamond's most prolific recording period (1968-1972). In addition, it marvelously heals the wounds incurred by suffering through the horrific live versions of the Uni/MCA era songs found on Columbia's Greatest Hits 1966-1992. Still, if you're looking for the single best introduction to Neil Diamond's overall career, you can't go wrong with Columbia's outstanding 1996 box set, In My Lifetime. In My Lifetime is still the only domestically released compilation to include the original studio recordings of all of Diamond's classics.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Neil Diamond Album.......2001-08-14

"Glory Road" is the best argument that Neil Diamond is a genuine musical talent and not a hack. Though he's always been spotty as an album artist, Diamond has a clear knack for knocking out singles and an ear for memorable and sometimes beautiful melodies. These five years were a remarkably fertile and prolific time for him; for every familiar hit that hooks you immediately, you'll find a previously unheard gem. As an earlier writer mentioned, "Walk on Water/Theme" is a gorgeous song, probably the best here, maybe the best he's ever done. It, and a few other choice surprises, reveal an honest romanticism mixed with passion that few singer/songwriters have ever achieved. The bigger Diamond got, the more self-conscious he became (and he was pretty self-conscious to begin with), but "Glory Road" earns its name.

5 out of 5 stars The best compilation of Neil Diamond material, period........2000-01-05

I guess my only complaint with "Glory Road" is the sound quality, or lack of it. This set carries a relatively high list price and the booklet says that it was "digitally remastered" in 1992. Was it really? It sounds like the tracks from "Glory Road" were taken from the hissy MCA masters used during the original MCA catalog CD releases in the mid 80's. "Glory Road" does not improve on the sound at all. It is a little ironic that Neil Diamond's "His 12 Greatest Hits" on CD from 1985 sounds much better than this.

If you can tolerate the hiss levels, "Glory Road" is, unequivocally, the best compilation title in Neil's CD catalogue. His other compilation titles are repackages of the same "hits" over and over again, or poorly-thought-out "theme" collections that were completely baffling in their song selection and/or sequencing. "Glory Road" presents a logical, chronological overview of Neil Diamond's mid-period recording career while he was signed to Uni (and later, MCA) Records from 1968-1972. It has an extremely informative booklet, with many little-known facts about his career, although it would have been nice if musician credits were available for the book to give recognition to the many excellent musicians who played on Neil's records.

I think that everyone who was conscious during the 70's has probably heard the "hits" ("Sweet Caroline", "Song Sung Blue" et. al.). "Glory Road" is useful because it includes key album tracks (like "And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind", "Both Sides Now", "Free Life", "Crunchy Granola Suite", "Morningside") as well as some "misses"- singles that weren't huge hits and therefore are "new" to an whole generation of people ("Two Bit Manchild", "The Last Thing On My Mind", "Walk on Water"). Basically, if Neil released it as a single, it's here, whether or not it was a "hit".

If you're even half-way interested in Neil Diamond's music, you will eventually want to explore beyond the tried n' true hits. "Glory Road" is the best introduction to the "other" material. You may even get hooked. I did. When I heard "Walk on Water" for the first time, it took 5 weeks to get that song out of my head!.

5 out of 5 stars The best introduction to Neil Diamond.......1999-11-09

As there's only one other (somewhat negative) review of this double CD collection on this page, I thought I'd help restore the balance. Diamond's Uni/MCA years saw him at the peak of his powers and although this compilation isn't perfect (it's too short thereby needlessly depriving us of the likes of Coldwater Morning and Canta Libre, plus there's too many live cuts) it's the best one on the market - and that includes the 3 disc box and the double Greatest Hits collection. Unexpected highlights include Juliet, If I Never Knew Your Name and Stones.

There's a lot of schlock on Broadway these days, so it's especially frustrating when a small, off-Broadway show doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Carried by the indomitable George Dvorsky and Sally Mayes in the title roles, Pete 'n' Keely should have been a lot more successful than it was, so we're lucky to have this recording to immortalize the little show that should have been. Inspired by the likes of Steve (Lawrence) and Eydie (Gorme), Pete and Keely are two high-voltage entertainers; the show purports to document their hectic 1968 TV special. Dvorsky and Mayes are fantastic as they frenetically go from clever originals by Patrick S. Brady and Mark Waldrop to over-the-top Rat Packy takes on classic tunes such as "Fever" and "Besame Mucho." As for the finger-snapping rendition of "Battle Hymn of the Republic," you've got to hear it to believe it. Our only qualm: the recording doesn't do justice to Bob Mackie's delirious costumes. Oh well, can't have it all. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's Perfect.......2001-12-31

I lent my copy of Pete 'n' Keely to a friend. When she returned my CD, she said that it was perfect. I agree. Many of the songs are an enjoyable trip down memory lane that brings back many fond memories. The new songs by Patrick Brady and Mark Waldropfit right in. Sally Mayes does the best rendition of "Black Coffee" that I have ever heard.Goerge Dvorsky's Fever" is also fantastic. It is not unusual for me to be sitting at my desk at work and have one of the songs run through my memory. That isd without any music in the background. My friends who have heard me play the CD have purchased a copy for themselves, they liked the CD so much.

5 out of 5 stars Upbeat Musical Magic.......2001-12-11

This album is a MUST for any fan of Broadway - full of upbeat musical magic performed flawlessly by George Dvorsky and Sally Mayes.

The cd captures wonderfully the manic energy of Pete and Keely - a television couple that reigned supreme in the 1960s. Throughout the album we hear them at their best as they recall their joint musical career and their award winning signature tunes.

Dvorsky is a smooth as silk baritone with shades of Robert Goulet. His rendition of "Fever" on this album is alone worth the cost of the cd. Although done with a slight comic edge, the song comes alive with a wonderful nuance that Dvorsky delivers effortlessly. You'll find yourself replaying that track again and again.

The same could be said for Maye's sparkling "Black Coffee". Her voice is pure velvet, with a touch of "seen it all and done it all" flowing throughout this sensational track.

This original cast recording has been produced perfectly. The sound quality is superb, and the inner liner has some great photos of Pete n Keely in their glamorous Bob Mackie costumes that were such a huge part of the New York City premier.

If you like Broadway - then this cd is a must have...

If you like to smile when you listen to a cd - then this recording is a must have...

And....if you like your music upbeat and infectious - then this original cast recording is a MUST HAVE for your collection...

Tibbett had the talent and the way to express it. Would that I had been around to have enjoyed it in person. Who is out there today????????

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest singing artists of all time !.......2006-01-29

The baritone Lawrence Tibbett was one of the first American artists (with Rosa Ponselle) to gain international fame and acknowledgement in opera. This disc documents his great artistry very well, although it does lack represantation of his great operatic roles.
Tibbett gives every song and aria his whole heart and mind. He may not always sing perfect techniquely, but the truthfulness and drama Tibbett brings to being is superb and has in my opinion never quite been equaled.
This record encompasses all Porgy and Bess recordings he made as well as some very impressive portrayals of ballads and songs. I would recomend this disc not only to the collector but to all who can tolerate a bit of surface noise inorder to hear one of the greatest singers of all time :

Album Description

She sounded like Saturday night on a Sunday morning. Patsy on Jesus. Elvis without the pelvis. In the space of 20 years Fern Jones would perform in over 2000 tents and churches for nearly 50,000 people. She'd release two albums and a few impossibly rare 78s, and write one song that would be a classic on the gospel circuit for years to come.

Every once in awhile I run across an album that excells, not because of the shining brilliance of one artist, but because of the collective impact of several. Here, in this album, are some little-known gems from Christmas music literature. I was captivated by the lilting and primitive joy in "Jesus, the Light of the World," which I had never heard before. Then there is Chanticleer and its rendition of Charles Ives' "Christmas Carol," a classic too little known. There are others. If you look for unique renditions of familiar and unfamiliar Christmas music to enhance the joy of the season, this album is a must-buy.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best..........2002-11-19

The minute I heard Thomas Hampson sing the first few notes of Adeste Fideles, I knew I had to have this album. It is a marvelous compilation of Classical Christmas favorites (excerpts from the Bach, Vivaldi and Corelli Christmas Concertos and The Nutcracker) and standard Christmas favorites, as well as some of the lesser heard Christmas gems.

The vocal power on this 2 CD set is amazing as well--Broadway star Linda Eder, Thomas Hampson, Kiri Te Kanawa, Jose Carreras, Chanticleer, and numerous others. I usually purchase one Christmas CD a year. This was it for me this year--make it part of your holiday collection.
