Sometimes it takes the genius and adoration of a small record label like Chicago's Numero to unearth a bounty virtually fictional but for the several hundreds who listened and observed a half-century ago. Born in 1923, Fern Jones was a gifted songwriter with a deep-from-the-chest singing voice that was as much Lightnin' Hopkins as it was Patsy Cline. Her husband a preacher, Jones left the honky-tonks to perform by his side in Pentecostal churches and revival tents during the forties and fifties, her original and traditional gospel hymns always dotted with the blues and pop variations that inspired her. What those fortunate few were able to witness was put to vinyl by Dot Records in 1959, backed by noted Elvis studio musicians Hank Garland (guitar) and Floyd Cramer (piano), and available here for the first time since. It includes six Jones originals, including "I Was There When It Happened," covered by Johnny Cash during his first session for Sun Records. Fern Jones died in 1996, but thankfully--though 50 years after the fact--her music lives on with the vitality and clarity her underappreciated talent provided. --Scott Holter

Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28
"essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16
There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.
Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Album Description
2007 digitally remastered and expanded two CD set from the Deep Purple vocalist's solo recordings featuring the albums Glory Road and For Gillan Fans Only, the limited edition album given away with early copies of Glory Road plus two bonus tracks. Released in August 1980 on Virgin Records, Glory Road again featured the classic line-up of Ian Gillan, Bernie Tormé, John McCoy, Colin Towns, and Mick Underwood. As a result of the band's constant touring, the album entered the UK album chart at # 3. This was in no small part attributable to the first 15000 pressings featuring a free bonus 10 track album entitled For Gillan Fans Only. The two additional bonus tracks were originally b-sides: 'Handles On Her Hips' and 'I Might As Well Go Home'. 21 tracks. Edsel.Customer Reviews:

Customer Reviews:
Excellent in its own right and a great companion piece to Greatest Hits 1966-1992.......2005-09-22
Unlike all of MCA's previous Neil Diamond compilation albums, this one presents the material in chronological order. Each of Diamond's six studio albums for Uni/MCA is represented here with at least three or four tracks. Casual fans of His 12 Greatest Hits will revel in the treasure trove of excellent album cuts and other non-hits like Two-Bit Manchild, And the Grass Won't Pay No Mind, Glory Road, Juliet and the raucous live version of the otherwise unrecorded Lordy.
While MCA may have found it necessary to include a handful of covers, given the fact that cover songs were regularly sprinkled throughout several of Diamond's Uni/MCA era albums (particularly Touching You, Touching Me, Tap Root Manuscript and especially Stones), I personally would have jettisoned the covers in favor of Diamond originals like A Modern Day Version of Love (from Velvet Gloves and Spit), Cold Water Morning (from Tap Root Manuscript) and Captain Sunshine (from Moods). Nevertheless, what is presented here is undeniably excellent.
And given that Columbia saw it fit to present inferior live versions of the classic Uni/MCA material on their own '92 collection, Greatest Hits 1966-1992, it's only fair that MCA sneak a few Bang era nuggets into their set by using the great live versions of those songs originally found on presently out-of-print Gold (Live at the Troubadour) and Hot August Night (Live at the Greek). Hearing a raw, energetic rendition of Thank the Lord for the Night Time a mere three years after the original recording is far more palatable than listening to the awful abomination labeled Red, Red Wine on the Greatest Hits 1966-1992 set.
This set is an outstanding introduction to Neil Diamond's most prolific recording period (1968-1972). In addition, it marvelously heals the wounds incurred by suffering through the horrific live versions of the Uni/MCA era songs found on Columbia's Greatest Hits 1966-1992. Still, if you're looking for the single best introduction to Neil Diamond's overall career, you can't go wrong with Columbia's outstanding 1996 box set, In My Lifetime. In My Lifetime is still the only domestically released compilation to include the original studio recordings of all of Diamond's classics.
The Definitive Neil Diamond Album.......2001-08-14
The best compilation of Neil Diamond material, period........2000-01-05
If you can tolerate the hiss levels, "Glory Road" is, unequivocally, the best compilation title in Neil's CD catalogue. His other compilation titles are repackages of the same "hits" over and over again, or poorly-thought-out "theme" collections that were completely baffling in their song selection and/or sequencing. "Glory Road" presents a logical, chronological overview of Neil Diamond's mid-period recording career while he was signed to Uni (and later, MCA) Records from 1968-1972. It has an extremely informative booklet, with many little-known facts about his career, although it would have been nice if musician credits were available for the book to give recognition to the many excellent musicians who played on Neil's records.
I think that everyone who was conscious during the 70's has probably heard the "hits" ("Sweet Caroline", "Song Sung Blue" et. al.). "Glory Road" is useful because it includes key album tracks (like "And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind", "Both Sides Now", "Free Life", "Crunchy Granola Suite", "Morningside") as well as some "misses"- singles that weren't huge hits and therefore are "new" to an whole generation of people ("Two Bit Manchild", "The Last Thing On My Mind", "Walk on Water"). Basically, if Neil released it as a single, it's here, whether or not it was a "hit".
If you're even half-way interested in Neil Diamond's music, you will eventually want to explore beyond the tried n' true hits. "Glory Road" is the best introduction to the "other" material. You may even get hooked. I did. When I heard "Walk on Water" for the first time, it took 5 weeks to get that song out of my head!.

There's a lot of schlock on Broadway these days, so it's especially frustrating when a small, off-Broadway show doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Carried by the indomitable George Dvorsky and Sally Mayes in the title roles, Pete 'n' Keely should have been a lot more successful than it was, so we're lucky to have this recording to immortalize the little show that should have been. Inspired by the likes of Steve (Lawrence) and Eydie (Gorme), Pete and Keely are two high-voltage entertainers; the show purports to document their hectic 1968 TV special. Dvorsky and Mayes are fantastic as they frenetically go from clever originals by Patrick S. Brady and Mark Waldrop to over-the-top Rat Packy takes on classic tunes such as "Fever" and "Besame Mucho." As for the finger-snapping rendition of "Battle Hymn of the Republic," you've got to hear it to believe it. Our only qualm: the recording doesn't do justice to Bob Mackie's delirious costumes. Oh well, can't have it all. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
It's Perfect.......2001-12-31
Upbeat Musical Magic.......2001-12-11
The cd captures wonderfully the manic energy of Pete and Keely - a television couple that reigned supreme in the 1960s. Throughout the album we hear them at their best as they recall their joint musical career and their award winning signature tunes.
Dvorsky is a smooth as silk baritone with shades of Robert Goulet. His rendition of "Fever" on this album is alone worth the cost of the cd. Although done with a slight comic edge, the song comes alive with a wonderful nuance that Dvorsky delivers effortlessly. You'll find yourself replaying that track again and again.
The same could be said for Maye's sparkling "Black Coffee". Her voice is pure velvet, with a touch of "seen it all and done it all" flowing throughout this sensational track.
This original cast recording has been produced perfectly. The sound quality is superb, and the inner liner has some great photos of Pete n Keely in their glamorous Bob Mackie costumes that were such a huge part of the New York City premier.
If you like Broadway - then this cd is a must have...
If you like to smile when you listen to a cd - then this recording is a must have...
And....if you like your music upbeat and infectious - then this original cast recording is a MUST HAVE for your collection...

Tibbett gives every song and aria his whole heart and mind. He may not always sing perfect techniquely, but the truthfulness and drama Tibbett brings to being is superb and has in my opinion never quite been equaled.
This record encompasses all Porgy and Bess recordings he made as well as some very impressive portrayals of ballads and songs. I would recomend this disc not only to the collector but to all who can tolerate a bit of surface noise inorder to hear one of the greatest singers of all time :

She sounded like Saturday night on a Sunday morning. Patsy on Jesus. Elvis without the pelvis. In the space of 20 years Fern Jones would perform in over 2000 tents and churches for nearly 50,000 people. She'd release two albums and a few impossibly rare 78s, and write one song that would be a classic on the gospel circuit for years to come.Customer Reviews:

A rather presumptive holiday title, Simply the Best Christmas Album is an unqualified best--if you like classical, choral, and symphonic music. Marquee talent such as Placido Domingo, Natalie Cole, and Jose Carreras anchor the mix, abetted by the redoubtable London Brass, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Edward Higgenbottom & The Choir of New College, Oxford, and the Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra. This two-disc, 36-piece set presents a broad spectrum of holiday pageantry that embraces familiar traditional works like The Nutcracker and more contemporary pieces from Sumi Jo and Linda Eder. From triumphant brass and angelic choirs to stirring string pieces and rich, lovely orchestral movements, Simply the Best sets an exquisitely festive mood. --Martin KellerCustomer Reviews:
