About the Artist
Multi-instrumentalist Ryan Holladay first performed on Nashville’s historic Grand Ole Opry at the tender age of 5 years old, and is credited with being the youngest performer to grace that revered stage.

Still a pre-teen, he has already released three albums and has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show’s "World’s Most Talented Kids" episode, Nickelodeon’s "Figure It Out," and PBS’s "Zoom." Largely self-taught, his lightning-fast fingers are equally nimble on the banjo and mandolin, and he plays the guitar and Dobro as well. It all started at his granddad’s house, when Ryan – little more than a toddler at the time – started listening to Flatt & Scruggs records. "The first time I heard Earl Scruggs play the banjo, I knew I wanted to play – I thought it sounded really, really cool," he remembers.

His parents Mark and Lisa were very supportive, taking him to festivals and encouraging him to sing. When he first met the Opry’s Mike Snider at a festival in Camden, Tenn. (Ryan’s hometown), the precocious 5-year old said, "Hi, I’m Ryan Holladay and I sing tenor." Snider later invited the half-pint picker on the Opry, where he presented Ryan with the Brian Friesen award – a new Deering banjo – on Dec. 21, 1997. The beaming little boy sang a couple of songs and has since been invited back to the Opry more than a dozen times.

Ryan has opened shows for acoustic supergroup Nickel Creek and country great Roy Clark, and performed with some of the best acts in the bluegrass business including the Lonesome River Band, Larry Cordle & Lonesome Standard Time, the Mike Snider Band and many more. He counts Chris Thile and Sammy Shelor as his current musical influences.

Ricky Skaggs distinctly remembers hearing Ryan sing backstage at a bluegrass festival and was astounded at his talent. "I think he was in his father’s arms, and he just blew me away," recalls Skaggs. "That’s the kind of talent I want to see here at Skaggs Family Records. "Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley helped me as a young player, and we’re always looking for the next young talent, to give them a chance."

Skaggs Family Records is releasing Ryan’s album New Kid in Town to retail for the first time. It opens with the sizzling instrumental "Boston Boy" – a song Ryan heard while listening to Ricky’s music. "The first time I heard the song on his album Ancient Tones I liked it a lot," Ryan says. "We started doing it live in shows."

The Ryan Holladay Band includes his father Mark (vocals, guitar), uncle Mike (bass, vocals) and 16-year old fiddler extraordinaire Tyler Andal. The band tours the U.S. and Canada performing at major events and festivals. Recently Ryan and Tyler were selected to perform in a historic concert presented by The Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall in New York. This distance learning event connected 400 New York City high school students with 200 of their counterparts in New Delhi, India. Ryan and Tyler took part in a question and answer session as well as performing for their Indian counterparts via a live video feed.

Currently a junior high school student, Ryan is an active participant in Bluegrass in the Schools programs that help promote bluegrass music to American youths. He also co-hosted, along with Sierra Hull, the new International Bluegrass Music Association’s DVD entitled Discover Bluegrass that introduces young viewers to the American genre of acoustic roots music.

Last year, the first annual Ryan Holladay Bluegrass Festival took place at a state park in Camden, Tenn., and included a talent contest as well as musical performances by local talent in addition to sets by Ryan’s band, Mike Snider, Don Rigsby and others.

"I’m glad it’s in Benton County so all my friends can come to it. It’s good to know that people in your county are supporting you," Ryan says. "I always wanted to play music, and I think that’s what I was meant to do."

Amazon.com essential recording

Happy is the composer who has an advocate as passionate and talented as Leonard Bernstein. These Copland performances have been the preferred versions since they were first issued--better even than the composer's own, later recordings. Originally they were spread over two discs, but thanks to the extended playing time of the compact disc, you can now get all three great Copland ballets together, along with the ever popular Fanfare for the Common Man. Bernstein brings to this music the right sharpness of rhythm but also a typically open-hearted warmth. He coaxes a virtuoso response from the New York Philharmonic, which knows this music as well (or better) than anyone. Self- recommending. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars What more could one ask for?.......2007-06-27

Aaron Copland's masterful works are here interpreted by Bernstein. Nothing says the American sound like Copland, and there is no better interpreter than Bernstein. This recording is one of the best in my collection. I would recommend this to anyone (even non-classical music fans).

3 out of 5 stars Definitive Is Right.......2007-02-27

I have the SACD version of these recordings (except for the "Fanfare" which, in this case, is the version taken from Bernstein's recording of Copland's Third Symphony) and I must agree with others here that the performances are definitive. The "Rodeo" has more energy than any other recording I know of, in fact it can almost go over the top! "Billy the Kid" is quiet and tender, dramatic and bold and "Appalachian Spring" is dead-on. The last section of this ballet is one of my very favorite pieces of music and Bernstein's tempo and phrasing here could well be called perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Recordings of Copland's Popular Ballet Scores From Bernstein, NYPO.......2007-02-11

Without question, this splendid CD is my favorite recording of some of Aaron Copland's most popular orchestral ballet scores. In Leonard Bernstein he had both a good friend and a devout ally, who successfully championed Copland's music, helping to ensure his reputation as one of the greatest - if not the greatest - 20th Century American composer. Sony has done a superb job in digitally remastering this recording, offering some of the best sound I've heard from a vintage Leonard Bernstein/New York Philharmonic recording. But more importantly than the recording's superb sonic quality is the quality of these performances of Copland's scores. Bernstein leads in New York Philharmonic in these virtuoso performances, replete with lush, vibrant playing from the winds, horns and strings. His warm, truly heart-felt interpretation of "Applachian Spring" is truly mesmerizing, and the best I have heard from a recording. And yet, I am am just as impressed with his conducting of both "Rodeo" and "Billy the Kid"; the latter replete with superb solos from the orchestra's timpanist. An elegant performance of "Fanfare for the Common Man" closes out this CD recording. Fans of Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra shouldn't hesitate in acquiring this superb CD.

5 out of 5 stars American Music at its Highest .......2007-02-04

If I was forced to recommend one CD of American music, I would feel very safe in backing this one. These interpretations have yet to be surpassed, and not even Copland himself could muster the same type of perfection that Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic did in this recording. Bernstein's way with Rodeo is unbelievable, and this alone is worth the price of the disc. The music on this recording has a lot to do with why, as Americans, we can all be proud of our place in the history of western music.

With 39 reviews under me, I will dispense with the adjectives to try and describe each interpretation of each piece on this disc, and simply say that these performances have been recommended by almost everyone (professional critics included of course) since they appeared; get it and find out why.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Copland.......2007-01-09

For the Aaron Copland fan, this CD has the essentials: the most popular and easy listening of the Copland body of creations. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Terrific vocal talents for Copland's music.......2002-08-08

This second Copland collection focuses on unique talents of veteran performers.

William Warfield lends his voice and his interpretations of Copland's Old American Songs, and he sings them as they were meant to be, not as classical diletantes felt they should be. You have authenticity here.

Martha Lipton likewise contributes an older world charm and charisma to Copland's settings for Emily Dickenson's words.

Carl Sandberg's resonant reading of his own words is worth the full price of this set.

And then the inimitable Oscar Levant's piano treatment of the orchestral pieces...Levant had a wry touch to his interpretations that gave him a voice all his own.

There's much more here, quite a bit that's less than familiar and therefore increases one's familiarity with Copland.

    5 out of 5 stars finally sandburg's lincoln portrait.......2001-08-17

For all those like myself who have waited a decade for "A Lincoln Portrait" with Carl Sandburg's narration on CD, here it is finally! Sandburg's heartfelt reading of Lincoln's words is easily the most inspired and inspiring of the legions of others whose voices have been recorded. The orchestration by Kostelanetz also vastly surpasses others. Compare Henry Fonda's reading for example to see a poorly mixed tape where the narrator's voice is overwhelmed by the orchestra.

4 out of 5 stars Wow! Pretty Good Deal.......2001-03-13

I was surprised to find two CDs of such quality being sold for the price of one. It also contained many hard to find Copland works.

Vitebsk is exciting. Strings do much of the work here. The music is very unique to any other Copland works. Definitely here a sample of this.

The Sextet is very interesting. The combination of strings and piano is a prefect balance along with the clarinet doing much of the harmony. It is the same song though as Copland's 2nd symphony, the 'short' one.

Duo for Flute and Piano is fun and happy. The 1st movement fluctuates quite a bit in the feeling but is a very nice combination. The second movement is slightly morbid but the feeling of happy hi ho is not lost. The 3rd movement is light and bouncy and can be described as typical Copland.

Lincoln Portrait is powerful. Though I don't see how it fits on this CD has a rarity or a chamber work. It is the besy Lincoln P. I've ever heard though.

Old American Songs and Poems of Emily Dickinson are not that good though. It's a vocalist and a piano accompanyingthe vocalist. The vocalists are not that good and I felt needed to feel the music a little more. Thomas Hampson and Dawn Upshaw made a CD with these songs which is much better (the only problem is that that CD only has 8 of the 12 Emily Dickinson Songs).

Billy the Kid was a nice way to finish off. It's just a few excerpts played on solo piano. It was interesting hearing the piece performed this way.

The recording quality is okay sometimes and kinda slipping other times. Then again, these are classic recordings for the most part. The skill though of the orchestra and soloists for the most part is that of a high quality. I definitely recommend this CD to any Copland fans out there trying to discover more about Copland. It's a very nicely put together CD and price worthy too.

5 out of 5 stars Bernstein, Four Copland Ballets: SACD multichannel / stereo.......2003-09-06

Here we have the reissued classic Bernstein/New York Philharmonic recordings of four primary Copland ballets: Appalachian Spring, El Salon Mexico, Rodeo (dances sequence), and Billy the Kid. Even in comparison with the composer's own recorded performances, these readings stand out, a bit above. The sheer wide-open-prairie sound that SACD multichannel now allows ... now how did those old CBS stereo master tapes become multi? who knows?... in any case the surround sound now achieves new vividness, and a kind of "you are there" accuracy of tonal presence, whether the orchestra is temporarily engaging in play among one or more reduced, chamber-sized groups, or gathered up in typical Copland massed effects. All of these ballets are given completely superlative readings by Bernstein and company, here. But this new SACD mastering/pressing allows the greatness to come through more completely than ever before. As if Appalachian Spring, El Salon Mexico, and Rodeo were not enough: the recording of Billy the Kid tops it all. Even though this is the earliest recording, made in 1959, it was done in Boston's Symphony Hall. Although the differences in acoustic are subtle, if you listen closely among the changing tracks, you will hear the extra clarity and musical power of the Boston hall, long and deservedly renowned for its own special greatness of sound. In sum, you can buy this SACD for the sheer authenticity of the performances; or you can use it to test drive your multichannel system. In the latter case, you will be evaluating more than glitzy or floor-shaking sound effects, in favor of hearing just how much sheer music your rig can produce. The best of both worlds ... I am listening on five full-range speakers ... leaves a listener breathless with amazement. Billy the Kid is almost fifty years old, and sounds the best of the lot! Who can bear the agony of waiting to hear what contemporary BMG might be able to do with those equally famous Reiner/Chicago Symphony master tapes, also recorded in the pace-setting days of early stereo recording? Get this SACD disc, now. Forget movies for a while. Use your ears for fun, while you still have them. Highly recommended, for performance. Highly recommended for sound, especially in multichannel playback.

      Album Description

New Kid In Town features traditional bluegrass gems like "Boston Boy" and "There is a God" as well as orginal songs by Dierks Bentley, Chris Thile (Nickel Creek)and Steve Wariner. There's also a couple of great covers of "Hurry Sundown" and "New Kid In Town" that will transport the listener back to the days when country rock was new. Ryan Holladay's prodigious talent on the banjo and mandolin is simply amazing and once you hear him, you'll know there's a New Kid In Town and he's a force to be reckoned with.

4 out of 5 stars Bluegrass prodigy's superheated Skaggs Family debut.......2005-05-14

Chances are good that if you look up the word "precocious" in the dictionary, you'll find a picture of Ryan Holladay as the illustration. His singing appearance on the Grand O' Opry stage at the age of 5 (youngest in the history of the venue) might seem like a fluke if he hadn't followed it up with three solid albums of bluegrass by the age of twelve, festival and opening-slot appearances, all showing off his preternaturally fine instrumental abilities.

Unlike other country kids, Holladay isn't saddled with finding contemporary music whose words are fit for a pre-teen, but deep enough for adults. Instead, he digs into the instrumental bluegrass canon with his fleet-fingered mandolin, guitar and banjo picking, and leaves most of the lead vocals to his dad, Mark. Better yet, Ryan's occasional lead vocals (notably Steve Wariner's "When It Rains" and Dierks Bentley's "Midnight Radio") work surprisingly well, even with the novelty of a pre-teen being hounded by the bank or having his car breakdown. The Eagles' title tune provides a bittersweet closer, with a lyric that transforms into a cautionary tale from father to son.

The harmonies of Ryan, Mark and uncle Mike add a closeness to the standard tightness of bluegrass' high-and-lonesome, filling out to a foursome for an a cappella family sing on the traditional "There is a God." Mix in fiddle prodigy Tyler Andal, and the Ryan Holladay Band is ready to slay audiences at this summer's bluegrass festivals (including perhaps a repeat of the Ryan Holladay Bluegrass Festival in his hometown of Camden, TN). Their first CD for the Skagg's Family label is a superb introduction.

4 out of 5 stars The Eagles greatest song.......2000-03-30

This is the CD single for the song "Hotel California" by The Eagles. It is a great song. I recommend it to anyone, even if you hate The Eagles like I do. The other song is "New Kid In Town". It is an alright song, but it can't hold a candle to "Hotel California". The bad thing about this single is that it comes in an ugly brown cardboard sleeve but it sure beats buying the album just for that song and getting stuck with a bunch of The Eagles other crappy songs.
