5 out of 5 stars Only Five Stars?.......2005-03-01

..the very best! Anything (aneeeee-thing!) by these guys jointly and severally is worth collecting. PERIOD!

5 out of 5 stars "Amen to all 3 above reviews" is about all I can add ..........2004-01-13

... except the following:

I've heard it said that Koerner "out-Dylans" Dylan, and I have to agree. "Duncan and Brady," "Crazy Fool," and "Lady Day" feature his fast-talking and -singing wit, and the one-man band rendition of his "Ted Mack Rag," along with the liner notes on it, amplify his sense of humor and talent.

As a harp player myself, I find myself drawn to Tony Glover's cuts, especially "Don't Let Your Right Hand Know" (which, however, is not on this album, but rather on "The Return of ...". "What's the Matter with the Mill," "Honey Bee," and "Can't Get My Rest at Night," which are on this album, are likewise excellent examples of his talented harp work.)

Dave Ray, whether doing an unaccompanied field holler, like Leadbelly's "Black Betty," playing his faster songs like "Freeze to Me Mama," or playing a racing 12-string bottleneck accompaniment to his slower-tempo vocal in "Fine Soft Land," is a real artist.

My album is at least 35 years old, and it shows. It's nice to know I can get a fresh copy on CD!

5 out of 5 stars The best blues singers there ever were, black or white.........1999-07-09

I have listened to the music of most of the great acoustic bluesmen, and there are many great ones, black and white. But Koerner, Ray and Glover are right on top, the best of the lot. The three albums I listened to almost constantly in the early sixties were ruined in a flood over 30 years ago, and though lamented, life got complicated and I never replaced them. I just figured these great bluesmen and there wonderful music had faded into memory like so many of the artists of the folk-blues revival. But recently I was counselling a secretary and friend on some personal matter and suddenly heard myself saying. "Man you got to be careful what you gonna do, you might hurt yourself, you might hurt your friends too, you got to be careful, little mama, what in the world you gonna do, you might hurt yourself, hang, hang for the rest of your life." She knows I'm crazy, but still asked me where the hell I got that bit of wisdom, and I told her from "Spider" John Koerner, etc., etc.

A few months later, she showed-up with "Blues, Rags, and Hollers", and my mind was blown. I rushed home from work straight-away and slipped the CD into the player with trepidation- would these guys sound as good as I remembered? Or would another memory best left in the past be diminished by the reality. Well, they were even better than I remembered. When Dave Ray suddenly burst into my late middle age world with "It's Alright" the music went right to the bone, complete with goosebumps. I'm a bit long in the tooth to be playing air- guitar, but there I was. And all these songs make me feel like that. The intensity of "One Kind Favor" is beyond wonderful, with Tony Glover's haunting harp intensifying every subtle riff of Dave's talking 12-String and haunting, strangely stirring vocals.

I think the boys might think this little review a bit over-the-edge, but I mean every word of it, in fact I think its understated. If you like acoustic blues-hell, if you like music, don't miss these albums.

Recently I heard George Carlin (another old fart) issue a dictum that white men should never sing the blues. He was referring of course to "The Blues Brothers" and in their case I heartily agree. But it is quite obvious that he's never heard Koerner, Ray, and Glover. I'm pretty sure that Bukka White, Leadbelly, Robert Johnson, and all the rest are smiling down on these three white boys with approval and respect.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the 1964 album!.......1999-04-16

My family moved to Rochester, NY in the summer of 1964, when I was 17. My first friends were friends of Spider John's brother, and they all owned this album. This was my first introduction to Billie Holiday and Leadbelly, and led to a lifetime love affair with blues music. This album is a must for all the baby-boomers who started digging the blues in the sixties; the extra cuts are icing on the cake.

5 out of 5 stars Honored to be the first!.......1999-04-16

On a blues message page, we were asked to list our top ten favorite discs. I only wanted to list one per artist so I listed their first release, "Blues Rags and Hollers". But I could have easily substituted this one. It's THAT good. My only cavil--wish there was more cuts featuring Glover's harp. Nothing against what is there. Just that I love the harp, and Glover knows how to blow it!

5 out of 5 stars incredibly deadly rock and roll.......2006-03-02

This is the best album in the world. Even if you are living in poverty, use your money to buy this album. If you can only own 1 cd, this is a very good choice. ALL the songs are strong, and the majority are better than similar bands very best 1 song. High quality, catchy and intense garage rock. Its the best album I've bought for a very long time, and I buy albums frequently. One of my top 5 favorite albums. I tend to like violent/intense catchy rock and roll, and my favorite bands are the stooges, g.g. allin & the jabbers, electric eels, the velvet underground, new york dolls, heartbreakers, the cramps, the damned(1st album), the modern lovers, ramones, MC5, chuck berry, the saints, the pixies, the rolling stones, the beatles, eagles of death metal, and the white stripes. Honestly, its just good songwriting, any rock music fan will love it

5 out of 5 stars They just keep getting better.......2005-01-30

This is one of Dotsero's best albums yet with funky tunes like Green Goblin (can't get that bass line out of my mind) and You Talkin to Me?. There's techno-Jazz with Just Because, upbeat smooth tunes like Sweetness #34, and the jazzy-version of Sweet Emotion just plain rocks.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh Pants.......2004-08-24

This is the best Dotsero CD yet. Full of energy, soul, funk. Green Goblin rocks, My Leap of Faith is beautiful, Just Because is funky and fun. Completely in love with Dotsero's version of Aerosmith's Sweet Emotion !!!!

5 out of 5 stars Another great one!.......2004-07-12

Whew! I always look forward to Dotsero's newest release and I'm never disappointed. This is another great effort by the band. They're extremely talented musicians, a pleasure to watch and listen to live and just plain 'ole nice guys. My favorites on this CD are Sweetness #34, My Leap of Faith, Green Goblin and especially 'Just Because.' What a great song! It's been awhile, but I'm planning to see them soon at their joint in Denver so I can hear all their new songs "live."

5 out of 5 stars A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28

Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

5 out of 5 stars an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31

Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

5 out of 5 stars A harmonic delight; my 6-year-old especially loves 'em!.......2007-06-15

I got hooked on the Bell Sisters recently, after hearing "Bermuda" on a compilation disc I took out of the local library. This disc is a true guilty pleasure, with a sound and tone somewhere between The Andrews Sisters and Patience & Prudence. My daughter really likes the two ridiculous Spike Jones Christmas cuts: "Barnyard Christmas" and "Socko The Smallest Snowball" as well as the (Jewish?) folk song "Rutza Rutza." Other treats are a pre-Elvis "A Fool Such as I," "June Night," "Boo-Hoo," "Poor Whip Poor Will" and "Hang Out the Stars," which is a swingy vocal rendition of Johann Strauss's "Blue Danube Waltz."
Though it's a shame their popularity didn't last, I'm glad they left us this body of work.

5 out of 5 stars This package is aptly named.......2004-11-15

...lots more fun, indeed! I'd never heard of the Bells, until one night, I was 'googling' for Bing. I came across the Bell Sisters website (which I now know is maintained by their nephew, Rex). I was enchanted by the television clips of Bing and these two darling teenagers. Who were they? I had to read more. I was delighted to find this CD had recently been produced, and I ordered it immediately, from Amazon. I wasn't disappointed. Not knowing Bermuda or June Night, made no difference. CD#1 is 'sort of' a best of, while CD#2 is the Lots More Fun. I giggled a LOT listening to the 'banter' between the girls and Bing, (even with an occasional off-note). I wish I could see these televison shows, in their entirety, but to have them preserved, in this manner, is priceless. It is hard to believe they are now both in their 60's. They'll be forever young through this labor of love. If you like pure vocals, mixed with some fun, this one's for you.

(I'm wondering, though, what happened to the picture of the CD? It was on this page, at one time.)

5 out of 5 stars One Of A Kind.......2003-02-20

There never was an act like the Bell Sisters, a teenager and her subteen sister who exploded from nowhere with "Bermuda," as song written by 16-year-old Cynthia. They quickly followed that hit with "Wheel of Fortune" (and you thought only Kay Starr had a hit with that one) and many other rapidly-released sides and scored a smash on the Bing Crosby radio show with their music, sense of fun, and 11-year-old Kay's facile comedy. They even made movies successfully, toured for the State Department to military spots with Bob Hope. Their RCA Record catalog is absolutely wild--they did every kind of song imaginable, from the very strange "Rutza Rutza" to a purely lovely "A Fool Such As I." As adults, both Cynthia and Kay proved superb singers; either could have had a terrific career as a jazz singer. They opted instead for marriage and teaching and their remarkable career they now regard as a memorable time in lives with far more than show business on the resume. This long overdue, highly welcomed collection includes all the RCA sides, some unreleased gems, some later recordings and the Bell Sisters appearances with Crosby, which are a revelation. He obviously adored them and his performances with them are totally charming. When you hear Kay's reaction to Cynthia's garbling up the script on one show you'll know why people loved this duo. And no one sounded like them, that's the most interesting thing. Don't miss out on this opportunity to hear the "Bermuda" girls; you'll play this album over and over and smile every listen

5 out of 5 stars Reissue Of The Year.......2002-12-17

The Bell Sisters, who hit big with the classic "Bermuda", are featured in a double CD. All of their RCA tracks are here, plus great radio performances from the Bing Crosby radio show. Bing sings along on some of them. There are about 50 songs included, with a highlight being the original demo of "Bermuda". The sound is brilliant, a revelation to anyone who has only heard them on 78 or 45 rpm recordings. My highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing - Step away from the mirrored glass and buy this album.......2007-06-27

The only thing that equally makes this album as bright is Chris Cassidy's Vic Thrill videos on YouTube. If you have seen any of these, you will know they tend to be extrememly unique. But I'll degress to talking about CE-5.

I don't write reviews often. In fact this may only be my second review ever. I, like many, got into Vic through being a fan of The Bogmen. I have said for many years that Life Begins at 40 would be one of my top 10 desert island discs. It is easy for me to say this would have to be right next to it. Don't let me lead you into thinking Vic Thrill is simple extension of The Bogmen. CE-5 is extremely different from LB@40 and Closed Captioned Radio. I find each song takes on a life of its own to which the final result is hard to classify.

I get excited for Afrological -> Radar -> Cream running through my stereo just as much as I enjoy to step away from the mirrored glass during Wailing Wall. I challenge you not to sing the first line of Smeared without a smile on your face (though the first time you hear it you might question that statement). Great artist, Great album, and in the words of Bobby Frumbali, "It's good - You'll like it". As for Vicarious Thrill - PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE keep your songs coming. Finally to Cass, thx for the visuals that support the music.

5 out of 5 stars really cool stuff.......2006-04-17

More people should buy this album. Vic Thrill is fascinating. Very edgy, very New York. There's a cool profile of him and his buddy Curly Oxide on This American Life (NPR) that you might want to check out. Support local musicians. Sorry I don't have more to say, but I do say this is worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Leaps all genres in a single bound.......2005-04-23

Once upon a time in the 90s, there was a little band from Long Island called The Bogmen. This band of merry men, fronted by singer/songwriter Billy Campion, formulated a delightful brand of ebullient art-rock with a sardonic edge. Although The Bogmen had a very loyal, rabid fan base, they were never able to achieve mainstream success, toiling for several years in relative obscurity before finally calling it quits in 1998. Rising from the ashes of his defunct band, Billy Campion reinvented himself as Vic Thrill. He formed a new, eponymous band with the help of two former Bogmen, bassist Mark Wike and drummer Derek Finan, as well as ex-Garden Variety guitarist Anthony Rizzo, who adopted the pseudonym Saturn Missile.

Many Bogmen fans eagerly followed Billy Campion's transformation to Vic Thrill - a testament to his charismatic persona, considering that his current musical stylings are pretty far removed from his past work. Campion is like a modern-day pied piper, minus the bad intentions. Wherever this man leads you, you can be sure you'll be thoroughly entertained when you get there. Such is the case with CE-5, Vic Thrill's full-length debut. An entertaining mix of just about any genre you can think of, and probably some you'll have to make up, this CD will make you dance, laugh, think and leave you fumbling for words to describe it.

Though difficult to describe stylistically, CE-5 can easily be categorized as a blast of pure energy. Vic is a man who loves experiencing everything life has to offer. The joy that he projects through music is palpable, and you can't help but feel positively giddy while listening to this record. Vic Thrill is not just a cool name that Campion thought might look good on a marquee. He really embraces the idea of the "vicarious thrill", whereby listeners of his music are able to experience all the emotions that he puts into it.

The broad mix of emotions and influences that were used to create this music make it impossible to confine CE-5 to any one genre. While there is a definite focus on electronic sounds throughout this record, it's nowhere near the realm of Moby or Portishead, artists whose monotony and pretension perfectly illustrate why Electronica is often maligned. Vic Thrill overcomes those preconceived notions with music that is vibrant, witty and never boring.

Take the first track, "Hummingbird Pneumonia", which can only be described as a complete sensory assault. Even the most astute listener out there would have a tough time trying to identify all the instruments and effects that are present on this song. The music makes a sound in parts that actually conjures up images of hummingbirds flitting around. The vocals are achieved by layering many different distorted versions of Vic's voice over each other, resulting in what sounds like an extraterrestrial barbershop quartet. This song is the perfect introduction to Vic Thrill, because it packs all of their spirit, musicianship and technological expertise into a tight little ball that explodes when it reaches your ears. You'll never hear anything like this song on the radio and there is no mistaking it for anything else.

The rest of the songs on CE-5 seem to use that first track as a starting point, each one diverging down a different path, while still staying true to the space-age theme of the record. Songs like the title track and "Rebellion of the Cloned" are psychedelic trips to distant galaxies. "Wailing Wall" and "Afrological" are great futuristic rock songs with impossibly catchy choruses. "Living in the Love Life After" is Cake-style melodic rap, while "Smeared" is a ska-flavored adrenaline rush. The record closer, "Zero Odds", is a stripped-down slow burn that gradually swells to a hard rocking, guitar-driven release that ends the record 180 degrees from where it began.

Highlights of this record include the funk-pop epic, "Everything Here is Filled with Cream" and "The Williamsburg Strangler". The former begins with an extended musical intro, building with so many different sounds that your ears won't know what to do with themselves. Suddenly, a blazing guitar riff hits, and a pumping disco beat emerges that will make even the staunchest wallflowers get down. The latter is a hypnotic dance groove with a dark side. The serial-killer inspired lyrics give the song a decidedly menacing tone while the electronic choir, which sounds eerily like women screaming, is quite chilling. Still, it manages to remain accessible, thanks to a dazzling array of techno beats and Vic's ethereal vocals.

Vic Thrill's CE-5 is not just a collection of songs; it is a musical adventure. How this talented and strikingly original band has remained virtually unknown is a complete mystery. Perhaps, as another song suggests, "Nobody's Watching the Radar"? Well, start paying attention, folks. No doubt there are more thrills to come.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Thrill.......2005-04-12

Sometimes the coolest music goes unheard by the masses. Such is the case with Vic Thrill, and it's a real shame.

Vic Thrill is a man (Billy Campion - vocals, electronic choir, drum machine) and his band, which is comprised of former members of the Bogmen and Garden Variety, two more bands nobody has heard of. Vic Thrill's sound pretty much defies description, but try eccentric pop, exotic alternative meets electronic or perhaps electronic cyber punk. CMJ called Vic Thrill "a big top on acid vibe." I prefer to think of it as what life might be like if you visited Las Vegas' Circus Circus on some serious acid.

In early 2002, the band released their first full-length CD on their very own Circus Clone Records. The disc, CE-5 (which stands for close encounters of the fifth kind) was produced by Robbie Adams, who is known for his work producing Smashing Pumpkins and U2. It's a surreal real gem. If you like a mix of the odd, obscure, and painfully hip, check out Vic Thrill.

On a weird side note, Vic Thrill (the man, not the band) may hit the big screen. Apparently SNL's Tina Fey is writing a screenplay - Curly Oxide and Vic Thrill - based on the true story of Oxide, a Hasidic Jew, and Thrill, who meet and form a band. Lorne Michaels will produce. Weird indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing amazing.......2005-01-24

This music is incredible. It's like nothing I've ever heard before. It wakes up some part of my brain that's never been awake before. Totally addicted with no hope of rehab and I LOVE IT! I am so freaking excited that it will get awesome publicity now that Tina Fey is writing a movie about Curly Oxide and Vic Thrill. I believe the response will be huge. Now quick! Get on the wagon so you can be all smug say you listened to Vic Thrill before the movie even came out!

Houston artist Oddiscee has a fantastic album here, the highlight of which is "Urban Desperadoz," which lays it out. It's all about the pesos, dinero, mano y mano.

In the past, the Houston rapper has worked with Public Enemy and Anthrax, displaying the diversity which a modern urban sound must have. Oddiscee has it going on, so check it out.

4 out of 5 stars "There comes a time to close your eyes to what is real".......2006-11-16

There are very few moments on this album that rise above the mid-tempo range, whereas the songcraft relies heavily on arrangements and the often dazzling vocals of Danny Cecati. His control is excellent while some of his sustained vocals are impressively long and expressive and is the main reason I keep returning to this album. In fact, he is the brightest highlight on a very strong recording. "Two Souls Apart" shows off his talents with emotion and power all the while the band interplay, while not especially amazing is otherwise solid and frequently high quality. When "Illumination Fades" hits with its insanely catchy stop/start guitar riffs beneath Danny's already established vocals is when this band truly shines, with a tasteful guitar solo as added polish. "Where Clouds Divide" continues on the same mid-tempo path where the songcraft is more important than speed riffing and/or meth-induced double-bass drumming. This is wherein my primary complaint lies. Every now and again a song slows down too much or the arrangements become sparse to the point of becoming slightly boring, making the vocals carry the song exclusively. But the arrangements can also be fairly interesting, though not all that original, such as piano interludes or string sections. But there are plenty of hooks, as well, such as on "Dawn (a new beginning)" with its catchy guitar-work and fluid tempo-shifts making it one of the strongest tracks on the album. "While The World Sleeps, pt.1 Dreams" is actually pretty until the guitars increase in presence and remind me that this is actually a Progressive Metal creation. "While The World Sleeps, pt.2 Altered Visions" seemlessly continues the epic soundscape with a balladesque intro before turning Progressive and up-tempo where Eyefear are clearly at their best, continuing to showcase the talent of their lead vocalist throughout. "The Script Of Sorrowed Tales" is the fastest song yet with plenty of Progressive-style guitar riffs and a couple of guitar solos that are once again laced into the song structure rather than exercises in egomaniacal bombast. While "Vivid Window" is an acceptable ballad, Danny Cecati's vocals help elevate an otherwise unremarkable song. This is easily the weakest track on the album. But then "Beyond Twilight" picks things up again to finish the album with a flourish. All in all, the good production and intelligent songcraft are enough for me to recommend this CD to fans of mid-tempo Progressive Metal who enjoy quality vocals and thoughtfully arranged song structures. Eyefear are definitely a band to look for in the future. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars ROCK REPORT says............2005-12-19

Progressive metal fanatics will definitely spend some pleasurable hours with this release, which is blessed with an above average production thanks to producer Endel Rivers (Vanishing Point, Black Majesty) and the mixing duties of Andy LaRocque (King Diamond, Evergrey)

5 out of 5 stars Melodic Prog Metal at its Best.......2005-03-04

Every once in a while an album comes along and takes you by storm. It's not necessarily the most groundbreaking or an unusually original record, but it has this certain quality to it that directly speaks to you and occupies your stereo/discman for a good many weeks - non-stop!

Eyefear's 9 Elements of Inner Vision is that kind of an album. I'd never heard of this band until this CD of theirs came out, and was quite surprised that it was actually their sophomore release. It turned out they had already released their first one in 1996; so they're no newcomers. 9 Elements of Inner Vision, however, is what put them on the map, possibly because of their new line-up, especially singer Danny Cecati (ex-Pegazus). Cecati is an unbelievably amazing vocalist; he can scream like there's no tomorrow and deliver heart-wrenchingly emotional tunes. I haven't heard this band's debut, but I'd bet that it sounds completely different from 9 Elements, since this is one of those albums heavily characterized by bands' lead singers. At first, Danny Cecati reminded me of former Steel Prophet vocalist Rick Mythiasin's style on the debut album of Redemption. Sort of like an aggressive power metal vocalist singing for a melodic progressive band. On the other hand, his phrasing is more in the lines of Roy Khan (ex-Conception, Kamelot) and perhaps the lead singer of Pagan's Mind. If you've heard any of these guys, you can bet that Cecati possesses a killer voice that you will most probably be impressed with. Check out the killer scream at the end of track two, "Two Souls Apart". The other song, "Where Clouds Divide" is even scarier. It opens with emotional vocals that quickly turn into a powerful falsetto scream right off the bat. His slower singing is even more amazing. There are two ballads here with great piano work and intense vocal harmonies.

The music also has certain reference points. I was immediately forced to think of Eternity X's The Edge album when I heard the first couple of tracks on this disc - the groovy bass, in particular. Guitarist and main songwriter, Kosta Papazoglou, plays extremely crunchy rhythms over delicately woven keyboard arrangements. The contrast is most likely going to appeal to fans of Evergrey. The dark tone of the music, lyrics and even artwork are going to add to it. I was pleasantly surprised to find out in the booklet that Andy LaRocque had mixed the album. Since LaRocque mixed my favourite Evergrey album, In Search of Truth, as well, and Eyefear members being big fans of the band, I believe this disc may garner tons of fans, provided that it reaches the right audience. I've heard other people comparing Eyefear to bands like Vanishing Point, which I agree with whole-heartedly (producer Endell Rivers has worked with both bands), and some others, including Control Denied, Conception, Vanden Plas, and Ark. I seem to detect some Pagan's Mind like arrangements here, which is a big plus, given that Celestial Entrance is one of the most brilliantly produced prog metal discs, ever.

Back to Eyefear. Their brand of music could be labeled melodic prog metal with various time signatures, alternating between wicked vocals and guitar runs with shifts of mood and colour. The guitar solos here are no doubt going to please fans of Symphony X. What I particularly like about this disc is that there isn't a single overplayed riff for the sake of showing off. Keyboardist Sammy Giaccotto's melodies are soft, yet sparse and they are laid over the music like a thick blanket. The drumming is more direct and not as complex as some other prog bands out there. Its directness and double bass drum use may also appeal to fans of power metal, but I'd hardly call Eyefear "power-prog". I've always hated that term anyway; besides, the music presented on this disc is certainly progressive in style. One little complaint could be made about the packaging; on the back of the CD sleeve it says there are 10 tracks on this album, while there are only 9. Mattias Noren's artwork and layout is fantastic. I can pretty much tell his work by heart now, cause he's really developing a distinctive style. I've been listening to this disc for nearly two months now, and repeated listens have revealed that the songs on this disc are a tad same-y, i.e. not as ultra-diverse as Eternity X's The Edge (then, what is as diverse as The Edge anyway?). But I'm not complaining; this is one of the greatest bands I've discovered recently and I can see many others enjoying them as much, if not more.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2002-12-13

I absolutely LOVE this CD. I would have to say that it is by far my favorite. melissa is an excellent artist and i totally recommend her to everyone! I have seen many of her shows and you should too! She rocks! So look her up and see if she's in your area (rightonrecords.com) :) I know you will all be as addicted as i am. Yay!

2 out of 5 stars The Least of a great artist........2002-04-24

I've been a fan of Melissa Ferrick for years now. I caught her down in Northampton, Mass. while she was hyping Valentine Heartache. The news songs she played were excellent, I must say.

Fast forward a little to when Valentine heartache was released. I had informed my local record store to get me a copy, even if they weren't ordering any for general sales. When I got the call that it was in, I ran down to the store, eager to tear the shrink wrap off.

Bottom line: A disappointment. Even most of the songs I liked simply didn't stack up to the live versions I had heard. I have all her other records, so I know she can do much better.

If you want to hear middle of the road, mainstream singer/songwriter-styled music, you probably won't be too bothered by Valentine Heartache. It is an okay album, but far from the level Melissa is capable of. She is much better represented by "Massive Blur" and "Freedom." Two songs from this album can be found in superior live versions on "Skinnier and Faster Live."

The album isn't completely without Merit. I'm happy to have any version of "One Night Stand" and "Crack the mirror," and "Welcome To My Life," Along with "Will you be the one" are good, albeit not as good as the SaF live versions.

In the past, I have used Melissa Ferrick to set the standards of excellence for her style of music, so it is painful for me to condemn this album to middleground status. however, she adds nothing new to the style, the genre, or really her repitoire with this album. With a new album soon to reach the public, I honestly hope we have better Ferrick on the horizons.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-02-25

Since her album of EVERYTHING I NEED Melissa's music was getting better and better, and now it seems all of her talent went into something rather self-pitying. I think her past is catching up with her in this album and holding her back from her real talent as a songwriter.

4 out of 5 stars realized potential.......2001-10-23

Melissa Ferrick has had an unconventional career. Plucked out of near-obscurity to open for Morissey, she was signed to a deal by Atlantic Records. While those albums have moments of brilliance, they are nothing compared to what Ferrick has been able to put out now that she has started her own label and taken control of her music.

Valentine Heartache is a splendid album, a rare find. It is "intense" and "raw" and many other somewhat cliched critical terms. In my opinion, however, it is primarily the reaching of a benchmark. Finally Ferrick is behind the wheel and has made an "essential" album. While the prior release, "Freedom," is also excellent, "Valentine Heartache" sounds more comfortable, more at ease. It is a pleasure to listen to.

It is true, Ferrick's lyrics tend to cover old ground: love, betrayal, change, growth. She sings about hurt in a way that many will dismiss. However, the combination of power and musicianship sets this album above her others, and on par with or above many of the artists she once shared a label with. She also plays the trumpet on this album (she went Berklee College of Music for her trumpetmanship) and experiments with slower tempos in more successful ways than on previous albums.

There is no substitute for a Ferrick live show; she is *that good* live. However, look to either this album or "Skinnier-Faster-Live at the BPC" for an introduction to her music. Stand out tracks include the roaring "One Night Stand," the dedication of sorts to her fans "Welcome to my Life," the trumpet-filled treatise against earlier labels "E-mail," and "Mercy."

5 out of 5 stars An amazing CD.......2001-10-04

This is truly her best work to date, and that is saying a lot considering the remarkable talent that she reveals in previous albums. You won't be disappointed.
