4 out of 5 stars A Boogie Woogie Showcase.......2000-08-13

I wanted to get a birthday present for one of my best friends. I sought a fine boogie woogie collection in the pattern of Black and Blue's "Boogie Woogie Masters". Juke Joint Jump does fill that bill. It has cuts by titans of the art: Memphis Slim plays "Panic Street", Art Tatum plays "Tatum Pole Boogie", Champion Jack Dupree plays "Dupree Shake Dance", Pete Johnson plays "Boogie Woogie" and others. Freddie Slack's "Down the Road a Piece" is an infectious tune that lingers. There are 18 cuts in all, none of them bad, and some of them very very good.

--- Seven years later ... ---
[ I initially wrote this text as a comment, but eventually found a suitable clickable button, but I still don't know how to bump the stars ]

I just now read through my review of Juke Joint Jump a Boogie Woogie Celebration. I thought to edit it but couldn't find an appropriate button to click. Anyway, I've listened to this cd a couple hundred times since I wrote that review (7 years ago (the thud you may have heard was the sound of my dropping jaw banging on the desk)!). I'd bump my review to 5 stars if I could. I love this cd.

4 out of 5 stars Dr. Ross is still the harmonica boss.......2000-08-26

Dr. Isiah Ross recording for Sam Phillips on Sun Records before there was an Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. If this album contained only The Boogie Disease, is would be well worth having. Dr. Ross was the last of the one-man bands, finally passing away in Flint, Michigan, where he worked at the GM plant. This CD contains most of great Sun recordings, including Chicago Breakdown and Juke Box Boogie. Some rock historians might recall when CREAM recorded Cat Squirrel in the late 1960's. The writer was none other than Dr. Ross. The orginal record is contained here. This CD also includes a number of traditional blues numbers, such as Break 'Em On Down and Feel So Sad. But most of the recordings here are rare, hard to find sides. Dr. Ross was a clear, distinctive voice who found brief popularity in the 1970's during Blues Revival shows. On some sides he performs drums, guitar and harmonica unaccompanied, hence the name: the last of the one man bands. If you are interested in a genuine original, and are weary of the over amped blues clones, Dr. Ross' Boogie Disease just might be for you. "Thought I'd boogie to the doctor, boogie to the nurse; Gonna keep on boogiein' till they put me in the hearse." And that's exactly what Dr. Ross did.

I was fortunate to meet Big Joe in a club in Cinncinnatti back in the early 70's. I must say that Joes' heart is as big as his boogie-woogie hands, which get a real work-out on this cd! If you love true blues... you've got to love this cd! Even though this is compiled and partially recorded in his home....the quality is good and full of blues grit! Crank it up and enjoy! 5 out of 5 stars Juke Joint Boogie.......2004-10-04

Freddie Hart had been recording for almost twenty years before his 1971 hit `Easy Loving' climbed the charts to number one and gave him Song Of The Year in 1971 and `72. This collection brings together his very early catalog of Capitol and Columbia recordings from 1953-1961 including his first major hit 'The Wall' from 1959. Also included is Freddie's composition `Loose Talk' that was a hit for Carl Smith in 1955 and was also recorded in 1961 by Buck Owens and Rose Maddox. Among Freddie's country material are two rockabilly sides `Dig Boy Dig' and `Snatch It And Grab It' recorded in 1956. Sadly they didn't catch on at the time, but highly praised by collectors making them rockabilly classics. This is the same year that he recorded `Blue` & `Drink Up And Go Home' a great catchy classic honky-tonk. The bluesy 'Baby Don't Leave' has such a unique guitar solo, would have been a great song for Elvis. Freddie's version of Harlan Howard's `Chain Gang' is fantastic and was recorded a few years before Johnny Cash's version from his "Blood Sweat And Tears" LP. Freddie's songs were recorded by Patsy Cline, Lefty Frizzell, George Jones, Bob Luman, and Kenny Rodgers just to many to mention here.

Many previously un-issued songs like `Dance And Sing', `From A Boy To A Man', `Loving In Vain', `I'm Gonna Live For Today', `Do My Hear A Favor'. The title track `Juke Joint Boogie' and `Heart Trouble' were released prior on LP, but they were in electronic stereo in the 1970's. Here we have them straight from the excellent original mono masters. Why `Careful' was left in the vaults is beyond me, such a tender performance. The un-issued tracks have the same high quality of the released material.
There is star power in the musicianship on this release which includes Wesley Tuttle, Cliffe Stone, Joe Maphis, Jimmy Byrant, Merle Travis, Johnny Bond, Floyd Cramer, Grady Martin, Hank Garland, Bob Moore and Hargus "Pig" Robbins!

Freddie Hart is a legendary Country writer and recording artist with an amazing story. This is a great example of the classic releases that Bear Family Records put out there for the fans. It's wonderful that they recognize Freddie early talents.

Album Description

Blues Artist of the Year Willie King's self-produced masterpiece is a groovin', jumpin', juke boogie blast. The hypnotic grooves and outspoken lyrics make this CD a modern blues classic.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Willie KIng is the BLUES!!.......2007-07-18

When I got into the blues 2 years ago, I had no idea I would be flying back to Alabama to attend Freedom Creek Blues Festival, Willie King's homage to the blues!! But, I saw a snippet of his work in Martin Scorcese's The Blues DVD set, and I said to my husband, "I have to go to Alabama and see Willie King." Unexplicable! Two weeks later, I was there.

I can't say enough good things about this music. But first about Willie: he's a decent guy who tries to do good things. He greets his fans with such love and devotion: his fans are his kids. He's approachable and loves the contact with his fans.

Willy is serious when it comes to "lovin' one another" and models it beautifully. He laughed when a few of us missed the sexual overtones of some of his lyrics, but tackfully explained them. He writes 99% of his music as well. Great lyrics and creative, intense playing.

King's band, The Liberators: Rick on keyboard and harp, Debbie on bass guitar and singer, and Willie James on drums are professionals to the core. They help make Willie look even better: it's an extraordinary team. Willie James gave me a drum lesson at Freedom Creek and, trust me when I say, it is HARD! But, we howelled with laughter at my attempts. I was happy I could entertain Willie James for a few minutes instead of him always mesmorizing me with his playing song after song after song.

Willie's energy is contagious. I can't match it, but I always enjoy it. It's my plan never to miss another Freedom Creek! I bought all of his CD's and I find them all exceptional for different reasons. By the last two and go from there! You won't be sorry. You'll be rockin' down the road.
Oh, and check out the new DVD documentary called Willie King "Down in the Woods." A couple came over from Europe to take 'down' Willie's life and they did an excellent job. It's not easy getting 'heart and soul' on film, yet I think this couple rose to the occasion and did it!

4 out of 5 stars I Am The Blues, my review from Barcelona.......2007-07-02

I like Willie King in all its multiple facets -great voice in certain moments very similar to Howlin Wolf- good guitar playing and better compositions. I know him musically through his records: 2000's FREEDOM CREEK and 2002's LIVING ROOM IN TO NEW WORLD, both with very good themes. Willie King is an authentic Chicago Bluesman with occasional funky reminiscences. Because of the poverty, racism and oppression that he has suffered, he divides his music between sweet and struggling Blues. This I AM THE BLUES follows these guidelines and is of course a great Blues record. The opening track, the instrumental "Strolling with Willie" which carries the flavour of the well-known Otis Rush's "All your love I miss loving", contains some rhythmic and harmonic clashes between King and the band but things settle down in the rest of the record. He pays homage to HOWLIN' WOLF with "You' re going to worry", "The wolf is back" and the song which gives title to the record, "I am the Blues", which makes you think of Wolf's "Smokestack lightnin'". All other songs are also superb. I recommend this CD and I give it 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2004-10-05

I know Willie, and when he sings, I am the blues," it's not just a song title or a lyric, it's the real deal. Willie is as honest and gritty and rolicking and real as it gets. He is the blues.

5 out of 5 stars Real deal blues is alive and well.......2003-08-29

I first heard Willie King play live at his festival in Freedom Creek, deep in Alabama, where this music arises from the harsh realities of rural life. This CD is the blues as it is lived today - a soul-filled expression full of joy and misery, catharsis and dance to lighten the soul. Willie King has a great blues voice and plays some mean guitar, backed up by a rock-steady band who never overplay the groove. If you like blues in the style of R. L. Burnside, John Lee Hooker or Howlin' Wolf you will love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Dirty and beautiful.......2006-11-25

Blues music at its best, when it is raw and simple, sorrowful and mean. Hooker's "inept" or "bad" guitar playing is perfect here. It is ragged and unusual, and his little mistakes add to the broken feeling of the songs. He sounds like a broken-hearted witch doctor. It's amazing. Good grief, how boring and criminal would this album be if it was John Lee singing over somebody playing perfect, totally predictable blues guitar? It makes no sense, and anyone who longs for that doesn't get John Lee Hooker, or the blues for that matter. Why don't you ask Keith Richards? He got a huge amount of his rhythm guitar style from John Lee. Of course if you think John Lee is inept then you probably think Keith Richards is sloppy and that Mick Jagger can't sing, so nevermind. It's people who like clean, overproduced, safe, boring blues music who have nearly killed the blues as an artform, and made it something for middle-aged suburbanites to go see on their Honda Goldwings on Friday nights at some restaurant near a mall. Get this album and turn it up and and experience some real blues, raw and nasty and completely profound.

5 out of 5 stars Intimate John Lee..........2005-10-20

This CD is one that I always end up coming back to when the hard times hit. John Lee bares his soul on this one and his vocals are delivered with conviction and pure emotion. The CD consists of 19 tracks and are just Hooker and his electric guitar. The setting sounds like a small club or coffee house (every once in a while you can hear dishes or glasses clink) and the applause is sometimes edited out at the end of some songs, making it seem as if Hooker is playing without an audience. John Lee really knows how to deliver when it comes to singing about a relationship gone bad. Songs like "I'm Gonna Keep On Walking" and "You Gonna Miss Me" perfectly articulate feelings on lost love. He also sings of the effects of depression on "I Just Can't Hold On Much Longer". Although it sounds bleak, this is John Lee Hooker at his most intimate. With the exception of a few faster songs, the majority of the music is mellow blues with soulful vocals, actually pretty relaxing. Overall, the amount that I've played this disc in the years since I bought it has made this a worthwhile purchase, and to me it remains one of the best examples of the incredible blues of John Lee Hooker.

4 out of 5 stars Good old blues, great stuff!!.......2005-06-18

This is a great "mood" blues cd. That guy below talking about how bad the guitar playing is doesn't get it. It's not how hard something is to play, it's what the songs do for you. I can't stand these technical snobs always talking about how hard and fast they can play....they only play with there brains, this comes from the heart.

5 out of 5 stars This is The Real John Lee Hooker!.......2005-05-13

I don't know what the previous reviewer is talking about!Primitive! You don't understand the true relationship between the African music culture and Delta Blues if you don't get this!Hooker is at HIS BEST WHEN HE'S ALONE! This is the stuff that makes him a legend;not his band CD's. This is one of John Lee Hooker's greatest Cd's,EVER!If you don't feel this, you got a Hole in your Soul!

3 out of 5 stars Incredibly primitive (bad) guitar playing, but good vocals.......2004-11-03

I'm afraid the guitar playing is way too primitive for me. To call it rudimentary would be very complementary, I mean its just bad. What else would call playing in which the guitarist randomly hits open strings on his guitar without any thought to harmony? A first year guitar student could play as well. Which is a shame as much of this music is very emotional, Hookers vocals and storytelling are both strong. That's why I gave this CD 3 stars rather than one. But personally I'd rather listen to Elmore James, Lightnin' Hopkins, Charlie Patton or Robert Johnson before solo Hooker, at least at this stage of his career. Those guys can write a tune AND play, expecially Johnson. In later years Hooker became a much better and unique guitar player and on his earlier 50's recordings when he plays with a band, he sounds fine. But on Boogie Chillun his guitar playing is wanting, so I'd avoid Boogie Chillun unless you're a Hooker completist.

Update/rebutal to the reviewers above me: Hey its not about the guitar technique but the fact that Hooker can BARELY play at all. His voice is marvelous and if this was an accapella album it would have been a heck of a lot more enjoyable. In fact the only kind of blues I can enjoy is the primitive hence my reference to Charlie Patton or Lightning Hopkins guys who either NEVER played with bands or did it very seldom, but there's a difference between primative and completely inept. I never said Hooker was better in a band context, just that at this stage his guitar bugged me. His vocals are amazing and as I said in my original review emotional. Like Louis Armstrong once said there's only two kinds of music: good and bad. This falls in the good catagorie.
