Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Altogether pleasant pairings with deep-throated Randy..........2007-01-31

This is a fine country duet disc with good guests, good songs, and Travis in good voice. Randy's career has not been quite as big as I thought it would become, based on his wonderful debut album, the one with "Diggin' Up Bones" on it, but it's been big enough, and durable enough. He is always interesting to hear, whether he is doing Gospel or secular music. And for this one, at this time, the price is nice as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great selection of duets.......2004-03-15

This set opens with the title track, the only one that Randy sings solo and a fitting tribute to the guests that appear on the remainder of the album. The big country hit was A few old country boys, the duet with George Jones (also featured on his guest album, Friends in high places). Most of the other guests are country singers but blues singer B B King joins Randy on Waiting for the light to change, while Clint Eastwood is guest on Smoking the hive. Those songs are all originals, as are The human race (with Vern Gosdin) and Walk our own road (with Kris Kristofferson). The remaining songs are all covers.

Three female guests are included but Emmylou (almost an automatic choice on this kind of project) is not among them. Dolly guests on Do I ever cross your mind, a song that she must love, having recorded at least five versions - first with Chet Atkins, then for her Heartbreak express album, then for this album, then for her Heart songs live album, then for Trio II. Tammy duets on We're strangers again and Loretta duets on Shopping for dresses.

The oldest song here is Birth of the blues (with Willie Nelson). Conway Twitty joins Randy on his own song, Come see about me, not to be confused with the Supremes song of the same title. Merle Haggard duets with Randy on All night long, an old Bob Wills song. Roy Rogers completes the main album on (what else) a duet of Happy trails.

If you enjoy traditional country music, you will find much to your liking here.

5 out of 5 stars Crossover to Country.......2003-07-24

As a longtime rock and roll listener from New England, this CD opened my ears to country music. Every song is a treasure, each artist compliments Randy's smooth baritone in their own unique way. A Few Ole Country Boys with George Jones is a true classic.

4 out of 5 stars A great singer with great heroes and friends.......2000-06-17

Every song on this album is enjoyable to listen to, and a few of them are on my list of top Travis songs (esp. the one with Dolly). And, as a huge Eastwood fan, I love the Randy - Clint duet. Clint's voice at the end gives me chills! Definitely a fun album to put in your car because you can enjoy every song.

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Moved to tears.......2004-03-18

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

5 out of 5 stars Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27

John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12

I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

5 out of 5 stars Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02

This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

Lone Star indie-billy bandleader Tommy Alverson invites a bunch of his pals to play on this album, with contributions by folks such as Ed Burleson, Johnny Bush, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Gary P. Nunn, Rusty Weir, and the legendary Leon Rausch among the more recognizable names on here; "new" artists like Heather Morgan and Jerry Max Lane may also turn a few ears. This is a down-home set by a bunch of raspy Texans who like playing long, late-night sets at sweaty bars, just for the fun of it. It ain't Nashville, and that's alright by me.

5 out of 5 stars The best album I own.......2005-11-04

I bought this because I like the name and cover. I have heard that Dimitri from Paris has pretty good taste. I cannot beleive how brilliant this album is. I'm not a crate digger or club head, but I try and keep up to date and this album is a total find. The music is beyond anything I have, there's so much of it and it's all brilliant. DJ Muro's CD takes your head off, the mixing and the tracks are out of this world. I'm dancing to this three times a day. Dimitri's is just groove after groove. It just doesn't stop, really bad ass rare tunes that rock the party, this is Playboy Mansions part II.

This isn't your Nashville garden variety sugary what a prefect life I have music. If you want music about that look elsewhere. If you want the raw, the real the honest, the soul filled music get a copy of this cd. Billy Don Burns is amazing. His skillful songwriting and vocals is second to none.
Here is a tiny peak at this masterful lyrics

"His silhouette stands against the wall, The shadow of a man who lost it all. It helps conceal the pain, He rides though the night down a lost highway through a hole he made in is vein ,
to a plastic place where desperate dies on a dirty street called shame? From "The Dark Side of The spoon"

Or "She'd go screamin cross the plains of my soul like a train runnin wild. From "Sailin Down the Nile"

He is kind of a Waylon sings David Allen Coe.

The majority of the songs are stripped down . It sounds like it was done live in the studio without those nasty overdubs that robs the music of it's soul.
The only song that get tuned up at the end of "Runnin Drugs out of Mexico" but the song calls for it
He pays tribute to his heroes
Pasty Cline, Haggard, Keith Whitley, Johnny Cash and Hank Sr.

Pasty a duet with Willie Nelson who also plays guitar as well. Which is obvious to the listner

His cover of the Cash classic "Give My Love To Rose" is filled with emotion. His 1997 cd knocked Cash (his hero) out the number one spot on the Amreicana charts.

I've been on the net for almost 10 years I've found alot of indy artists but Billy Don is hands down the best I've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Meanest bad-ass of the Outlaws.......2005-08-10

Woa! This guy's one piece of work. Billy's had a long history of friendships with Nashville, and Texas' baddest hombres (Kristofferson, Haggard, Paycheck, Cash, Jones, etc), but his music was never released until a few of years ago. I'm mighty grateful I've discovered this guy. This is what real outlaw country music stands for. This guy is so brutally honest that there's no chance you'll hear this on mainstream anything. He duets with Tanya Tucker, and Willie Nelson on this, his fourth release (only two are available), but he's twice as gritty as anyone out there today. There's no comparisons. He sings of addiction, drug smuggling, love gone wrong, and Patsy Cline; what more can you ask for? He also produced an album by Paycheck that was recorded when Johnny was in the "Pen" some years ago, but that's never seen the light of day.......yet. That story is pretty amazing. Discover Billy Don Burns today.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful but bland.......2007-05-25

When I first put this CD on I thought, 'Man, this is great.' Fifteen minutes later I was saying, 'Yep, this sure is mellow.' By the end I was barely listening. It was like Bill Evans on thorazine . Now I don't even know where the CD is. Maybe it's what's propping up the wobbly leg of my coffee table. I'm not going to go look and find out. Florence is a fine fine piano player with a lovely touch, but there is no variation here. Maybe this CD would be good as one disk on a 6-disk player set to RANDOM PLAY, but played straight through it could put a weak person into a coma. So depending on how you listen to your music, or whether you listen to it at all (maybe you just like aural wallpaper, maybe you just want something to add class to your overpriced restaurant) this either is or isn't for you. As for me, I live in hope that Florence will do something more worthy of his talent.
