These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! 5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Boy George's musical-theater debut has been unfairly maligned. Set in the glamorously decadent London nightlife of the early 1980s, the show is unquestionably hampered by a weak book. But Boy George's original score (which is credited to his actual birth name of George O'Dowd) boasts several strong pop songs and generously spread-out tour-de-force numbers among a handful of performers. The plot follows the rise to fame of Boy George (impeccably channeled by Euan Morton) and his interaction with lovers and hangers-on, friends and foes. One of the most striking characters is Australian-born performance artist Leigh Bowery, confusingly played by Boy George and Matt Lucas, who took turns during the London run and who both appear on this cast album (George sings "Everything Taboo," for instance, but Lucas gets the striking, Cabaret-like "Ich Bin Kunst"). Confused yet? Well, that's Taboofor you. But never mind the plot: There's plenty of cool, theatrical tunes on this CD, which is more than you can say about most contemporary shows. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

3 out of 5 stars Jolly Good!.......2006-06-16

Boy George may be to blame for the failure of his musical in the United States, though he would rather fault Rosie O'Donnell. Still, critics praised him for his lyrical skills here. There are catchy songs with various gay themes here. I enjoyed it though I've never seen the musical. I think musical fanatics will appreciate having this piece in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo Boy George!.......2004-05-26

Don't hate me, but I saw the Broadway production five times including closing night. I'm still unclear why this tremendous production did not catch on, it was truly amazing. It's the first time that I've seen a Broadway show more than once. I received my Broadway CD today, as I ordered it the day after the show closed - I understand that it will be available in July, 2004, hopefully sooner in time for the Tonys. The soundtrack CD is absolutely brilliant, completely capturing the fire and energy of the live production. My favorites from the show are still my favorites here, especially Euan Morton's haunting Stranger In This World and his beautiful Pretty Lies; Liz McCartney's unbelievable take on Talk Amongst Yourselves; Guttersnipe (so funny and cute live); I See Through You; Raul Esparza's heartbreaking Petrified plus the opener Freak; Out Of Fashion and the finale, Come In From The Outside. My fingers are crossed that the Tony's are generous to this show and hope Rosie O'Donnell keeps her promise for a return for this show! Get a copy, you won't regret it, even if you are not a Boy George fan, his lyrics and beautiful melodies are his best ever - everything here is eons above so many Broadway shows that run for years. I guess I'll just keep wondering why mass audiences didn't get it, although the show did receive a standing ovation every performance.

5 out of 5 stars holy crapper!.......2004-05-18

well first off, being a huge boy george fan... i was interested in his musical... i bought this cd... and i must admit most of the songs are written well and are catchy.... the most touching song is STRANGER IN THIS WORLD... euan morton's voice is soothing and the lyrics are sad and beautiful... and i recommend this album to all boy fans... although this is the london recording.... (as i patiently wait for the broadway score)... this album is good.... although george only sings on one song its still being rotated in my stereo.... get this album now....

5 out of 5 stars A Very Pleasant Surprise.......2004-04-23

I did not see the Broadway Musical, but I am curious why it failed. I bought the cd just out of curiosity and absolutely love it. The songs are witty and the ballads are especially beautiful. I would highly recommend this cd.

5 out of 5 stars No words to describe this.......2004-04-12

My review is going to be short and i'll get right to the point. Buy the soundtrack. The singers are beyond anything you've ever heard before. Euan Morton, be still my heart. His voice is mesmerizing. The song STRANGER IN THIS WORLD will leave you breathless. Just listen to it and you'll be transfixed, I know I was and am everytime.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Dutch Country.......2007-06-19

This is a good, rather simple album. It's notable that Ilse is a Dutch girl. One would never guess it from her voice, she does a very passable girl from the South. She sounds a little bit like the Dixie Chicks singer, Natalie Maines. The album as a whole consists of gentle, smooth songs. Not much uptempo stuff or hard-charging stuff here. Pleasant songs:

Just Like the Moon

I'd Be Yours - cool lyrics. Eg. "If I were a ghost, I'd haunt your house." The singer is saying that, given a chance to be anything, whatever she'd be, she would hang around the object of her affections.

World of Hurt - kind of a mellow blues rhythm.

Flying Solo

I'm Not So Tough - also sung by Mindy McCredy. Ilse's version readily holds its own in comparison.

Tap Dancing on the Highwire.

Thanks for the interest in country, Ilse

2 out of 5 stars Hype with no personality.......2006-03-11

Raving reviews, but what's the fuss? Every song on this album reminds you of something you've heard before, originality is a sin and in the end, this is all yet Another girl sounding like all the other girl-candidates, whose names or songs you can't remember after three minutes. A sort of elevator-muzak-genre, with lyrics that never reaches deep, arrangements that are too safe and stories told from a person who hasn't experienced too much of life (which is obvious to hear). It's harmless and without edge. Barry Backetts production is Barry Beckett-stellar, without formal complaints. However, Ilse would have done better with a more challenging producer, instead of this autopilotproducing, which really doesn't do Beckett any true justice (looking at his backcatalogue). If you feel seduced by Ilse's album, you'll soon feel sedated - wishing for something more exciting, truly life-telling. Look up artists like Anna Nalick, Rachael Yamagata, Fiona Apple or lovely stuff from Madeleine Peyroux, Bettye Lavette or Mary Gauthier: real emotions instead of this soon-too-be-forgotten-no-matter-the-hype-artist, Ilse. Judge her on the true merits of her album, instead of giving her more cred than she truly deserves. And hey, there's a lot of elevators out there waiting to be filled with soothing and toothless muzak, so don't knock it!

5 out of 5 stars Europeans better with American music.......2005-10-10

This album brings memories of early Beatles or Animals. It is this copying of American music that made them great. Or, maybe, transforming American music and making it their own in the later albums. Beatles won, Animals lost and this is why Ilse most probably will not be successful in the U.S.

I am not a fan of country so I am not going to compare this great CD to any other Nashville products. All I know, she CAN sing. It is this special twang in your voice that makes you successful in the genre you choose. Some transform the genre, some are geniuses within it and cannot get outside the box. Ilse's voice is the primordial, practical, controlling voice of country. She is in total command of any song she sings on this album. She dominates the back up band, apparently a great association of session musicians who are brilliant in the way they present country in the most pure way.

Anybody who watched the "Lost in Translation" movie remembers Bill Murray struggling the in karaoke scene. It is tough to recreate something you were not born with. John Lennon transcended the philosophy of meaning with his version of "Rock and Roll Music". He was some points better than the original artist who was Mr. Chuck Berry himself.

Ilse transcends the genre of country with her voice. She makes it so true with all great stories she sings about. Yes, it is about relationships and about being lonely. It is also about success and about the circus. The choice of songs on this album exceeds the five stars with the melodies and with wise wording of some of them, which - as good country songs - are immortal.

Yet, the Animals, with the greatest blues singer ever born, did not make it to the Pantheon of the Greatest. They were contained in their world, the world of nuance piano solos and of being more Catholic than the Pope. Blues is great in small doses even when sung by the best. Ilse needs to live in Texas and get her inspiration from us in a life and living version. Then she will be able to compete.

4 out of 5 stars "UNKNOWN" ARTIST?!.......2003-03-26

Apologies - Correction.
I wrote a review for Ilse de Lange's "World Of Hurt" and mentioned "I Still Cry" (my favourite track from "LIVIN' ON LOVE" - I have both albums and made the mistake.)I am a female myself and I enjoy (mainly) male country artists, especially duo's. But there are a few exceptions besides Ilse de Lange. She is just irresistable! Beg, steal, borrow...(or buy) both cd's - trust me!

5 out of 5 stars "UNKNOWN" ARTIST?.......2003-03-22

It's a downright shame that this (young) girl, who, in my opinion, can out-sing a lot of the Nashville girls, is virtually unknown! I discovered her after going thru "petethemusicfan's" list. (Hope that's the right name Pete!) What a voice from a singer who's home language is Dutch!! "I Still Cry" is so poignant, and for that track alone I would've bought the c.d. anyway. It sounds better everytime I listen to it. Get hold of this album wherever you can...you will NOT be wasting your money!

Fiddle, drums and bass form the cornerstone for Chris Murphy's high-octane music. Murphy chooses the "devil's box" for his instrument of expression, and I can almost see the fire flying from his fingertips on these 15 original instrumentals that are filled with emotional electricity. Don't expect a real sweetness and purity in his tone (possibly due to his instrument's electrification), but rather expect raucous and fairly rowdy renderings of his high-stepping melodies.

It's a rather unique personalized style that the New England Conservatory of Music (Boston, Mass.) graduate has created - something I might call aerobic fiddle music. It's vigorous and gets the blood flowing, but a little more oxygen to allow his pieces to breathe would have been beneficial. On this project that spans over an hour, I miss hearing some other lead instruments taking breaks. This absence means that Murphy's fiddle calisthenics carry the show. Over an hour of his music goes a long way, but you've got to appreciate his chutzpah and gumption. Some flashy interpretive twists make his musical romps rather exciting at times. I hear influences of Celtic, old-time, bluegrass and jazz in his music, and he demonstrates a technical mastery of the fiddle. His piece called "Sackcloth & Ashes" definitely shows some old-timey licks.

Chris Murphy has toured widely at home and abroad. He currently call Los Angeles his home. His trio includes top bass players and drummers from that area. Chris also composes music for film and TV, and he produces independent albums. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)
