Pretty Good.......2005-12-26

If you own the Best of John Denver from Madacy and EMI, you would be repeating the exact same recordings along with some others. This is incomplete without "Thank God I'm A Country Boy." Greatest Hits 1 and 2 are the ones to get, but if you are a huge John Denver fan like myself, you probably wouldn't mind this album as long as you do not pay a fortune for it IE not more than $10.00 new or used.

Overall, this makes a good album to add to your JD collection... but if you're only "so-so" about John Denver, I'd reccomend getting a better recording. There are lots of good songs, as well as not-so-good songs, which only his true fans could appreciate. Also the sound quality is not so hot, and they've gone a little overboard with the echo. Personally, I like it a lot because his voice is breath-taking and I want to get my hands on pretty much everything that was released by him...=D
So, unless you're like me and want to collect "everything", I'd say go for something else. Good luck!

Not originals, Not the very best.......2000-03-05

All one has to do is click the sound clip links above to hear that this is yet another greatest hits collection that does NOT feature the original recordings. This is at least true of "Sunshine" and "Annie's Song." Also missing here are "Fly Away" with Olivia Newton-John and "Thank God I'm a Country Boy." It seems the only way to enjoy John Denver's classics today is to buy the original Greatest Hits (I & II), though unfortunately they do not appear digitally remastered. If anyone knows of a one or two CD complete set of original greatest hit recordings that is remastered, I'm all ears.

This inexpensive set clearly covers all the best of John Denver. Anyone wanting only his popular hits should buy this album.

I enjoy this collection because it has some of John's old favorites and some of his lesser known songs and all sung in his mature voice. It is a two CD set, BTW.

Ugh. Darn. Got me again. This is not a collection of the songs that were played on the radio. It is a collection of songs with the same title, but sung in a totally different way. The renditions are tired, strained, and seem to be missing the "magic" I remember and find on other CDs. BEWARE. BE DISAPPOINTED. NOT THE SONGS YOU ARE EXPECTING. JDMc

The Sound Quality is Lacking!.......2000-02-02

Don't get me wrong, I love John Denver's music, but the sound quality of this CD was disappointing after having recently heard the "A Celebration of Life" CD. That CD, played on the same player as this one, had a richer and fuller sound, almost like he was right there in the room singing. Almost all of the familiar titles are there, along with some not as familiar. However, I can't imagine why Take Me Home, County Roads wasn't included on an album entitled "The Very Best of John Denver". I guess you get what you pay for.

Wonderful.......2000-01-21

I was never an avid fan of John Denver but when he passed away, I began to remember how much his songs played a part of my youth. At first when I heard this CD I was disappointed they weren't the original recordings, but then almost immediately I began to hear how beautiful his voice was. These recordings are of all the favorites, even the ones you never knew you liked so much. They have new orchestration, much richer and fuller than the originals, and I can't help but think that this is the way he would have loved to have presented these songs if he had had the technology and money back then. He had a beautiful voice that did not diminish with age, as many other pop singers' did.

An outstanding collection from a prolific performer........1999-05-30

There are many John Denver collections, but this one happens to contain some of my all-time favorites, including the soaring "For You", and perennial favorite "Sunshine On My Shoulders". Listening to this CD brings back a very memorable open-air concert on a mountainside in Utah several years ago. I can't think of a better way to spend $6 than to buy this CD.

Revised Mixes, but otherwise good.......2005-10-22

I ordered this based on the fact that all of the songs (except the three from the 1980's) were remixed from the original session tapes. This was fantastic news for me, as I have loved these tunes since the day I was born, but (like every other music buyer) have only been handed the same limp mixes from day one, in various degrees of tape hiss.

So, it came today, and I popped it in.

"Take Me Home, Country Roads" comes on. WOW! There is a bass line to this song!!! The fidelity is incredible! Hmmm...that instrument is louder than originally....but hey, I like it!

"Rocky Mountain High" comes on. Wow! The fullness is great....the guitars have life to them......They even fixed that vocal glitch on the "He Climbed Cathedral Mountains" line. This is great---wait a minute! What did he say? That line is different! Hold On! Some of this is an alternate vocal track!

"Back Home Again" comes on. What the hell??? Why is there a drum kit way up in the mix on this? Where is the subtlety of the original mix? This is absurd.

So goes the whole CD....some differences are mild-to-non-exsistant, and some just change the particular song into something different than we remember.

There is a bonus disc that comes with this CD which contains "Calypso" and "Annie's Song" in acoustic remixes (read: the actual master recordings with almost everything dropped except the guitars and vocals), an early lesser-quality demo-take of "Leavin' On A Jet Plane", and two other unreleased tunes. The second disc is not essential by any stretch.

So, basically, RCA/BMG had a good chance to finally make these somgs come alive after years of subjecting us to the same worn-out, hiss-filled 1970's mixes, but instead, we get tracks which can be justifyibly called "alternate versions".

Instead of a remixed greatest hits, we get something more closely resembeling The Beatles "Anthology" series.

Good to buy for the completeist, but the casual fan should stick to the original 3 volumes of JD's Greatest Hits.

Awesome cd.......2006-06-20

This cd is awesome! I picked it up in a gas station for $5. It is a great cd. He sings his hits and some other gems on here when he is older. His voice is very rich and extremely soothing. He was taken from us much too soon.
