I could't offer a technical critique of this c.d,instead I'll attempt to describe the enjoyment it gave me.Imagine you're sitting in your car listening to the radio,not terribly enthusiastic about getting out to start work.You become aware there's a bright ,cheerful sounding tune being played-vaguely familiar,I find myself tapping out the beat and humming along-what's this called then?Then we get to the part I can identify-DAH-DAHdeDAHdeDAH-DAH-DAH-Oh,of course,it's the music they used in "The Hunters",oh the memories that brought back.That tune got me out of the car ,through the day's turmoil,and when I woke up the next morning at 3a.m.,it was still going throgh my head!Okay,log onto Amazon,click,click,all I've gotta do now is contain my impatience .The C.D. duly arrived,suffice it to say it exceeded all my expectations regarding quality and content and has become one of my favourites.

Vintage march collection for connoisseurs.......2000-05-26

It seems like the heyday for recorded march collections was the early stereo era. The classic Mercury recordings by Fennell and the Eastman Wind Ensemble dating from that time no doubt contribute to that impression. In this collection, they demonstrate the seriousness with which they approach this repertoire by unearthing some lesser known (at least in the US) pieces to go along with the usual Sousa-esque fare. However, there is no sense that they scraped the bottom of the barrel: all of these marches are first rate. Even the less familiar marches will have you humming along in no time, so infectious are they. These performers bring their usual gutsy exuberance and the necessary polish, too. The sound is on the bold side so turn the volume down a bit for this one.

not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Norwegian-born Edvard Grieg has created many works for the orchestra, and this 6-CD box set contains almost all of them. Neeme Jarvi handles the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the choirs very well. The sound is crystal clear and has the perfect digital sound for every CD player/stereo.

For the long works, the Piano Concerto is attention-grabbing and beautiful. The Symphonic Dances and the Norwegian Dances are lively and tremendously extraordinary. The lesser-known Symphony in C Minor should be more recognized, as it is as powerful as other symphonies, like Mahler's first and Beethoven's sixth. For the short works, In Autumn and Landkjenning can be best described as sheer masterpieces.

For Peer Gynt, it is good to hear the first digitally-recorded authentic version. The suite version is just not enough for that full listening experience. NOTE: if you want to buy a Peer Gynt that includes the complete dialogue, I would recommend conductor Ole Kristian Ruud's version with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra; the dialogue lengthens the 90-minute work by two hours.

To know the rest is to listen to them straight through. All the works in this box set (especially the Piano Concerto) should be a possession for all Grieg-lovers.

This box-set a must have for any Grieg lovers.
Neeme Jarvi is very good.

In first CD, there is a powerful performance of Piano Concerto by Zilberstein.She is also great in F.Liszt recordings (at DG Classics). In second CD, works for string orchestra (including, famous Holberg Suite) to be found. And in 3rd and 4th CDs, marvellous recordins of Peer Gynt and Sigurd Jorsalfar (Sigurd, the Crusader)to be found.This works are the first recordings of complete score. Still, speakers to be present at Peer Gynt.And Funeral March for R. Nordraak is very influence in 4th CD.The wind ensemble of Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra is very good...

In 5th CD, there is an unknown work by Grieg: Symphony in C-minor. This work written in early period, but didn't perfomed often. Still, this work's name is "Forbidden Symphony"...And then, a majestic work "Land-Sighting" to be found. This is very successful choral work of composer and he written in a heavenly tone:E Major...And then, there is an unknown work again, an incomplete opera: "Olav Trygvason"... Grieg written this work on a libretto by his friend, Bjornson (a famous poet of Norway), but he could finish first act...

And in last CD, there are other vocal works, and his beatiful work: "Old Norwegian Melody with Variations". And then, 5 Songs to be found. This songs originally written for voice and piano (like other many songs) but he later orchestrated these works.And the first song "The First Meeting" was discovered in 80's and still, they used a new edition, published from new founded manuscript, so this is the first recording of Grieg's beatiful song.

In other words: this box-set is excellent and Highly recommended.

Wonderful recordings, slightly marred by lack of texts.......2003-04-09

Jarvi has been a fine advocate of Scandinavian music over the last 30 years. Even of those such as Grieg and Sibelius who you would think no longer needed advocacy. Most of these recordings were warmly welcomed on their releases and several won awards. And it's nothing but a pleasure to see them reappear again. The orchestral playing is sumptuous, but the real stand out is the singing of Barbara Bonney on several CDs.

This is now the fourth or fifth release for some of these CDs, first came the individual volumes, then the full price box, then releases on budget DG Classikon, and now a Collector's Edition box at half the price, but sadly minus the texts to CDs 2,3 and 6. This won't matter so much in the orchestral songs, CD6, where the texts to Bergtekne, Bergliot etc. are available in other releases or on the Lieder web page, but CDs 2 and 3 are currently the only complete recording of Peer Gynt and the sung or spoken texts are not available outside sheet music collections. Personally (as someone more interested in the vocal music than the orchestral) I would try and locate the original volumes, but at least DG has given those who don't feel the extra expense is justified a cheaper option.

Further recommendation: Anne Sofie von Otter's recording of the Haugtussa song cycle.

I love this album. Besides the familiar theme song, there are many pieces which we all learn to play as children studying piano. It's great to hear them. A great gift for young people studying piano.

I did not know what to expect when I ordered this cd. I ordered it primarily for the Lucy & Linus song but was pleasantly surprised with all the other selections of piano music. It is a cd of piano music that one would believe Schroeder would play. Classics from of course Beethovan and many other familiar favorites. I listen to this cd in the car and it is one of my favorite cd's.

Excellent intro to Foster and Sousa.......2007-02-25

This is a tremendous value considering the price and the number of tracks that you get. The renditions are not bad, but I have heard better Foster. There is a lot of narration, which makes this a great teaching tool to introduce Foster and Sousa. The narration is a bit more for Foster than Sousa. Some of the Foster songs seem to be cut a little short, giving you what is really more of a sampler than a rich collection of complete Foster songs. The Sousa marches seem to be a little longer and don't have quite as much narration. Even though both men were well known American composers, their type of music was quite different, so it's kind of an odd paring on this album. It's a pleasant listen, but not a "must have" item unless you don't have much Foster or Sousa in your music collection; it's a good starter album. Great for kids who might be interested in learning about these two famous composers.

this cd gas a great selection of music on it. the sound of the music is perfectly clear and i definately reccomend it. it is an ideal disc for all march fans. two of the greatest american composers on one disc. this is also a great deal considering the amount of songs on this disc. definately but this cd.

THE Peer Gynt.......2007-07-12

Sir Thomas Beecham was one of the giants in the "Golden Age of Conductors". In this famous recording he proves why. This familiar music has been recorded by numerous artists over the years but none has ever caught the real drama of the music like Beecham. The fact that this recording has never been out of print since it was first issued is a testament to its worthiness. If you do not now own the piece, buy this one. Even if you do own someone else's version, buy this one. You will not be disappointed. The only quibble which I have and which has been voiced by others, is the fact that the vocal parts are sung in German and not Norwegian. This is not a fatal defect in my opinion. Grieg himself and, for that matter, most Norwegians of his era were equally fluent in German. It is the music which is important and you will not find a better rendition of Peer Gynt than this one.

As an added bonus, there are some other delightful Grieg masterworks to savor.

Terrific, authoritative Grieg collection from Beecham.......2004-10-08

Okay, I'll admit that I am not as familiar with Sir Thomas Beecham's conducting as I am with, say, Herbert von Karajan's or Leonard Bernstein's. I've heard a few stories about his wise-old-man demeanor on the podium, but of his actual recordings I have heard only a handful. This is the only disc of his that I personally own, but it is a beauty. The booklet notes talk about Beecham's dedication to Grieg's music, especially his lesser-known works; that dedication is apparent in all of these performances. Of all recordings of selections from Grieg's complete incidental music for Ibsen's PEER GYNT, Beecham's would probably rank near the top, if not all the way at the top. The highlight of the performance, for me, is "Ase's Death", which I've never heard done as solemnly and beautifully (or as slowly) as it is here by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra strings under Beecham's direction. The rest is just as vividly characterized (wonderful "Morning", especially), with Ilse Hollweg making for a touching Solveig in "Solveig's Song" and "Solveig's Lullaby".

As for the fill-ups: Grieg's "Symphonic Dance No. 2" may not be a very substantial work, but Beecham makes a good case for it, wonderfully sentimental in the outer sections and troubled in the middle section. The concert overture "In Autumn" is also a fun and dramatic work; and the "Old Norwegian Folksong with Variations" is full of life and color through its many variations, especially in its final ones. The recorded sound is rich, warm analogue that truly brings out the luster of these performances. All in all, these are some terrifically authoritative Grieg performances from a conductor who apparently loved these works and was able to translate that affection into performance. Highly recommended.

A CLASS ACT.......2004-02-20

Much as I dislike the word, it's simplest to use it - Beecham had class. I do not believe I can even think of anything he ever did badly, or anything that is lacking in grace and elegance. There is strength there too, and obviously a touch (or more than just a touch) of arrogance. He was no great enthusiast for Bach, Beethoven or Brahms, and it's hard not to suspect that this was at least partly because these gardens of the muses were particularly well-tended by so many others. He was impatient and easily exasperated by Bruckner and Vaughan Williams, and I have to confess so am I. That left a great deal for Beecham to outshine all others in, and here he is outshining them all in Grieg's Peer Gynt.

It does not seem to me that Grieg is even remotely equal to the theme of Ibsen's Peer Gynt, which I believe rivals the story of Faust itself in its contemplation of the issues of love, death and redemption. Grieg does not have the `size' for that. What he is able to do is embroider the theme with musical numbers that are by turns picturesque, sentimental and sometimes even deeply felt beyond mere sentiment. It is a kind of music that called up Beecham's special wizardry in particular. The opening wedding march has the familiar Beecham swagger, the trolls in the Hall of the Mountain King are almost worthy of Peter Jackson, the hackneyed Morning breaks like the first morning, and Ase's death strikes a deeper note. Here the composer actually does get somewhere close, in a simplified way, to the complex tenderness and pathos of the scene where Gynt eases the worn-out old woman out of this world. The orchestral tone Beecham obtains near the end, and the exquisite timing of the final chords, are things worth getting this disc for on their own. Ilse Hollweg as Solveig is quite outstanding in the famous Solveig's Song and in the final lullaby.

For its time the recorded quality is quite extraordinarily good. Beecham was particularly adept at obtaining good recordings, by what combination of personal magnetism and outright intimidation I don't know although it's probably easy to guess. There is a fine little selection of makeweights bringing the playing time of the set to an hour and a quarter.

These performances are so good they actually made me reconsider the music. Prior to hearing Beecham's recording the only Grieg that I found really enjoyable were his lyric pieces played by Emil Gilels - and frankly I wondered how much of that could be attributed to Gilels. Modern versions of his orchestral music always felt a little empty and, inevitably, failed to inspire repeated listenings. This recording is so alive, vibrant and emotionally communicative that it's now a firm and much listened to favourite. Also the sound quality is hard to believe - over forty years old and it sounds better than almost all modern orchestral recordings - lots of detail and a lifelike warm tone. The recent remastering process used by EMI seems to work its wonders best with these 50's and 60's analog recordings. Anyway, this is the sort of CD I'd like to buy as a present for a good friend - just fantastic music making.

Well deserves its rosette award........2001-01-12

Beecham's recording of Grieg's Peer Gynt incidental music has been one of his most frequently reissued items since its first 1957 release. Purists and fuss-budgets might cavil at the vocal items being sung in German and the omission of two of the twelve items from the complete score, but there are enough merits to make this preferable to all other versions. The inimitable swagger, the tenderness, the beauty of phrasing, and the finely judged balancing of orchestral textures that Beecham could achieve are everywhere to be heard. Other Grieg works conducted by Beecham, less well-known, have been added, to provide 76 minutes of listening. Digital remastering has enhanced and clarified the stereo originals. This is one of the few CDs to receive a rosette in the prestigious Penguin Guide To Compact Discs.

As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Canuck Brass' Salute to the States.......2004-03-03

CBrass has for some years now been one of the premiere brass units in the world. Having seen them twice in person, they are true showmen and ambassadors for their country, their music and instruments.

Here is a CD that is needed in our time: a collection of patriotic, good ole' American music.

This is 4th of July clap your hands firework watching music at its best. In fact, that is exactly what listening to this collection does for me: it takes me to the excellent Greenfield Village at Henry Ford's annual 4th Fireworks Concert.

This is good stuff, well done by early CBrass.

Fun.......2002-01-29

The Canadian Brass never fail to please, and this CD really lives up to that reputation. Even with the added orchestra, the songs never get bogged down or unevenly weighted. This was one of the first CB CD's I bought several years ago, and still one of my favourites of theirs.

This cd is a lot of fun to listen to, mainly because of the entirely too impressive trumpet playing. While the quintet may be a bit trumpet heavy, it does not detract from music in this corny, showy style. It is a lot of fun to listen to, and I highly recommend it to those who love brass music.

I'd be tempted to make this the one, and I own over 2,000. I agree with what has been said above, but have a few thoughts of my own. I live near a major city with a known orchestra. Why are classical audienced declining? Maybe they're overplaying hackneyed works, and not playing some neglected masterpieces. In this double album there are some well known works, but some exquisite finds, like Picker's Old and Lost Rivers, Honegger's Pastorale, Arvo Part's Summa (!!!). Most highly recommended, with a good bottle of red wine.

Truly inspired collection.......2004-12-07

I came upon this compilation while researching a somewhat obscure piece called "Summer Pastorale", which is contained in the collection. One look at the play list and I was sold - here were most of my favorite tone poems, adagios, and assorted short works, all on one CD (OK, two CD's...)

Another gem here that I had never heard before is Pick's "Old and Lost Rivers". Ravel's final movement from Mother Goose is one of his best orchestrations and at the top of my 'A' list.

About the only pieces I missed here were Debussy's Engulfed Cathedral and Respighi's fourth church window, St. Gregory the Great. Perhaps they would be a bit too dramatic for this collection, though.

The only shortcoming of this collection is the lack of liner notes, but this is a minor issue. The music is superb.

Like a few other reviewers here, I purchased this disc for Tobias Picker's "Old and Lost Rivers." But from the Gregorian chants that open this two-CD set to the closing strains of Ravel's "Mother Goose: The Fairy Garden," I was absolutely captivated by the beauty and cohesiveness of this compilation. Producer Robert Laporta has created a disc that passes muster with neophytes and long time classical music lovers alike. I humbly suggest -- make that BEG -- that Virgin Classics turn "Classical Dreams" into a series. I would love to hear a second volume featuring such favorites as the BBC Symphony Orchestra's interpretation of Delius' "On Hearing the 1st Cuckoo In Spring," the Royal Philharmonic's version of Vaughan Williams' "Fantastia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" and the London Symphony's recording of Vaughan Williams' "Symphony No. 3 Pastoral" (Andre Previn conducting both Vaughan Williams' selections). By far, this is the finest classical collection I have yet heard. Encore!

Surprised and ... inspired.......2002-05-10

What a pleasant surprise this double CD turned out to be. I bought it used just for Picker's gorgeous and poetic "Old and Lost Rivers" but fell in love with the whole thing. I'm not usully one for "Best Of ---" or themed classical collections, but this one's in a class by itself. The selections are unusual and achingly lovely in themselves and as a whole. This is my new favorite disk. It's a relaxation or concentration tool... hell, it's a companion - it goes wherever my laptop and headphones go. You get over two hours of gorgeous and lyrical - never mushy, sentimental or tired - classical music, the perfect backdrop for everything from dinner dates to writing code. This CD has added sustained moments of beauty and poise to a busy life - which is more than I could have asked for!

Not the YMSB I love, but OK.......2006-03-15

I love YMSB. Have every CD. See them whenever they come around. I love progressive and jam band music (Phish especially). But this project is more of a Country & Western sound. No doubt due to the Galloway influence.

It's very well produced and performed, but not as good (IMHO) as the pure, uninhibited jamgrass sound that YMSB has mastered.

The included movie file is great and a MUST for all YMSB fans.

An Anomaly.......2005-07-21

Old Hands is somewhat of an oddity in the young YMSB catalog that I just cannot get into. Understand, I love this band, have their other discs and see them every time they come through town, but them covering a dozen or so Benny Galloway tunes doesn't feel like (or at times sound like) a YMSB disc. The disc gets off to a good start with the Dixie-infused "Pride of Alabama" and "Hill Country Girl," but things take a turn south on "Big Lights" (which features Galloway) and the irritating "Deep Pockets." The remainder of the disc is pretty much hit-or-miss: if you like that classic YMSB sound you'll enjoy "Train Bound for Glory Land" and "Wind Thru the Willows," but the numerous Galloway-sung tunes may give you pause. Overall, the pairing of YMSB and Benny Galloway has a few bright spots, but rarely, if ever, finds its way into my CD player.

Another Great Yonder CD.......2003-07-01

This is an incredible CD though I think it falls short of my expectations after Town by Town. Benny Galloway is an incredible songwriter and Yonder does an excellent job of performing his songs. The guests on the album are fitting as well, especially Sally Van Meter. Anyways, if you want to get a feel for this band go see them live, they put on one of the best bluegrass shows if youre a fan of the jamband circuit.

Yonder: from jamgrass to traditional bliss.......2003-06-26

Yonder Mountain is to Jamgrass what the Rolling Stones are to Rock and Roll. That being said, they have stepped out of their comfort zone to create a record that is sure to become a classic. Here they have proven that they are very capable of a traditional bluegrass-country album that will undoubtedly turn the heads of the more true-blue critics who have had trouble with the long jams and themes of previous efforts, which didn't quite fit the mold of the traditionalists.

Yonder got together with soulful songwriter (and self described butcher plumber, music lover and fly fishing junkie) Benny "Burl" Galloway and recorded a masterpiece composed entirely of tunes written by Burl. We picked up the album at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival last week and didn't have a chance to listen to it until the ride home. We listened to it all the way through three times over on our eight-hour drive. It's a bluegrass-country album that is pure and beautiful. It portrays the content maturity and beauty one would expect in an Alison Kraus album, and an authentic old time sound that is unmistakable and connected to the roots of yesteryear.

The Songs:

The Pride of Alabama is a good old-fashioned country train song featuring Darol Anger on fiddle, painting the picture of an Alabama girl named Dixie who took the train to Denver now longing for Alabama again. Hill Country Girl features Jerry Douglas on Dobro and is another traditional look at the music by the boys who have reinvented jamgrass. It is most impressive to hear them hold back on the jam and show us what they can really do - sometimes less really is more. Big lights features Benny Galloway on vocals and Dirk Powell on accordion. Galloway's is one of those voices that is unmistakably his. It is rich and full of character and his tone paints a picture clear and unforgettable. Deep Pockets is a country song co-written by Galloway and Dave Johnston. It is graced with the fiddle and vocal stylings of Tim O'Brien and the Dobro God Jerry Douglas. Johnston's voice is classic country, and his banjo playing superb. Sleepy Cowboy is a western lullaby sung by Burl with Sally Van Meter on slide guitar and Adam Aijala on guitar. Train Bound for Gloryland is a sweet old-fashioned gospel bluegrass number, which includes Darol Anger on fiddle. The Wind Thru the Willows is a country-bluegrass number with lyrics that paints a picture of a love out of reach. This song features Sally Van Meter on resophonic guitar. Not Far Away is a mining song with more incredible lyrics and a driving beat which features Casey Driessen on Fiddle and Tim O'Brien on vocals. And Goin' Away (For Betty) is a missin'-my-love song with Sally on Resophonic Guitar and Burl on vocals; Alone And Blue follows it: a sweet bluegrass number featuring the vocal soulfulness of Yonder's Ben Kaufmann. Burl sings another with Everytime, offering some more soon to be classic lyrics of country roads, cotton, and country breezes. Winds of Wyoming is a cowboy song with Galloway on guitar followed by Behold the Rock of Ages (do I need to say this is a gospel song?) which is haunting and I would have expected it found in an old hymnal if I didn't know it was a Galloway original.

Just knowing Sally Van Meter, Jerry Douglas, Darol Anger, Tim O'Brien, Dirk Powell, and Casey Driessen have all blessed this album should be enough to make the most skeptical true-blue traditionalist take notice. The words of Benny Galloway all could have been written a hundred years ago - and had they been we would all know them now. In the years to come these songs are destined to become classics. I can't wait to hear the next project by the Yonder Mountain String Band - but even more than that I look forward to hearing more from Burl. A shining diamond has just been brought into the sun thanks to the Yonder boys; and Burl has given them the opportunity to create an album that will stand the test of time.

if you are acustomed to YMSB the first listen to this disc will be a shocker..this albulm is a bit different than the yonder mtn. that we all love,, mostly because of benny galloway doing alot of lead vocal and almost all of the songs here are written by benny...but after a few repeated listens the disc reveals its beauty and it becomes apparent what the boys here are trying to pull off ..and they do a great job.also ,who can go wrong with the guest appearances here ( jerry douglas,tim o'brien, and many others) also dont forget to check out the cd-rom movie it gives an inside look at YMSB in the studio doing what they do ...PICKIN'and grinnin" if you have never heard YMSB you might want to get a live release first but if you are a fan or as yonder calls it a (kinfolk) then this disc is a must have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
