Bluegrass veteran Peter Rowan first heard the Czech Republic bluegrass sensation Druhá Tráva in 1993, and in 1999 he's banded together with them for a pleasant-enough, though hardly stirring record. They grab some wonderful cover songs, including a pair from Dylan's Time Out of Mind and one each from the Country Gentlemen, Guy Clark, and Van Morrison, but the often-lifeless readings don't always match the impact of the material. An exception, oddly enough, is Dylan's "Cold Irons Bound," which is stretched to nearly 10 minutes but retains its emotional force. Rowan also reworks two of his best compositions but doesn't add much value to either. --Marc Greilsamer

not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Good CD.... but a different Druha.......2004-10-07

I was very impressed by Czechmate. Listening to it, there is no doubt that by good fortune a great assembly of world class musicians have merged. In listening to New Freedom Bell the music stands very well on its own, but is certainly of new influences and direction. It is as if it is a new Druha. In fact if I were comparing the two and not just rating this CD, I'd have listed one less star for NFB.

And just to note, it is sad to realize that more recent departure of both Jiri Meisner and Martin Ledvina will have an even greater impact on the group. Someday I'd love to hear about a reunion of the Czechmate supergroup.

Growing to amaze.......2000-02-11

This is a Peter Rowan album... and I came looking for Druha Trava. It's growing on me... liked the first track straight way... now I dig about half... particularly Dust Bowl Children and Burning Ground.

Check out Czechmate for a truly hybrid without failings album.

A good start but..........2006-02-01

As other reviewers have mentioned, this isn't quite complete. All of the grand marches, dirges, and (understandably as this was recorded in the 1950s) unavailable-at-the-time marches are missing. Some non-marches have been substituted, confusing the issue. However, this is the largest and most readily available compilation that goes beyond the "greatest hits" sets that so permeate the CD bins. (There IS a truly complete set, but it's only available in Japan, and for whatever reason, it's not being mass-imported to the States at the moment. Go figure.)
For now, I would recommend this to someone who has not purchased a lot of other Sousa CDs so as to avoid the inevitable overlap. You won't have everything, but there's a lot to enjoy here.

A very nice collection, with crisp performances. It is, however, not complete. There is at least one march, The Wedding March," missing, and it is one that is VERY hard to find. Perhaps the set should be called "The Almost, But Not Quite Complete, Sort Of, Marches....."
