The Best of Country Music!!!.......2001-10-05
It's all fine for a critic to critique an artist and criticize his or her music. Since everyone's taste is different, we can't all like the same type of music. Besides, a lot of country music today isn't really COUNTRY. We need more artists like Ken Mellons because he sings COUNTRY music, not pop country. He is one of the many artists that "just disappeared." I'm glad to see that this has been released, and hey, even if it isn't really "THE BEST OF", at least he's back again. Let's give country music another chance and let's say goodbye to all the pop superstars thet think they're country. Cause let's face it, good country today is hard to fine and Ken Mellons is definetely good and definetely COUNTRY!!!!
If you need proof, listen to Jukebox Junkie and Ladies Night because I'd rather have LADIES NIGHT and be a JUKEBOX JUNKIE than to FEEL LIKE A WOMAN and not know WHOSE BED MY BOOTS HAVE BEEN UNDER!!
Ken, keep up the good work and people- if you haven't listened to Ken Mellons, you need to!!!
The Prevalence of Sameness.......2001-09-14
Curb has a unique marketing strategy--with artists they are not promoting they released their new CDs under the generic title "The Best of." Hoping some naive customer might think it is in fact it's a GREATEST HITS package but in reality it is not. Curb has done this to Deborah Allen, Perfect Stranger and now Ken Mellons.
At the outset, this is NOT a greatest hits package. With the exception of "Jukebox Junkie" (Mellon's top 40 hit from a few years back) all the songs here are brand new. Eversince Mellons' departure from Epic Records, his career has been going down hill. This album is unlikely to re-ignite the momentum.
Mellons has a mellow voice (not unlike Vern Gosdin)and many of these songs are heavily backed by steel and fiddling. So what you get is slanted towards the traditional side of country. But there is a major problem: all the songs sound the same--they are mostly midtempo honky tonk barroom numbers about love lost and found. It's a plesant CD but nothing seems to stand out.
Among the better cuts are the playful "Bundle of Nerves" and mournful "Ladies Night." The most ear-catching song is still Mellons' biggie "Jukebox Junkie"--here the dance mix is included. Other than that, this CD seems to fall through the cracks. With so many prolific writers in Nashville, why must Mellons co-write everything? And with so many versatile producers, why pick Jerry Cupit? Maybe sharing the pie with other Nashvillers might help.

My husband and me love ken's song "Jukebox Junkie"........1999-06-30
Since October 1994 when we were in the USA we have tried to get this song. Last month I was in Chicago and I got it as a sampler. We, unfortunately, had not the chance to hear into this CD but we are sure that it's worth 5 stars.

Still Sweet.......2005-05-18
Ken is such a great singer! I believe that this album proves it. His voice is so clear, deep and sweet. I met him at a Wal-Mart when his first album was released and he is so handsome too! Thanks Ken for another great CD to add to my collection.
As Sweet as it gets!.......2004-08-06
What has always impressed me the most about Ken is the way that he instinctively knows just what is needed to bring to a certain song in order to make it a standout hit. Not too many months ago, Ken would once again impress me with the tender and heartbreaking touch that he brought to the song, "Paint Me A Birmingham" (once again proving that he had not lost his touch with a great country tune.) Like many of Ken Mellons' fans, this new album is long overdue for us (and we are glad that it is here.) Sweet is Ken Mellons at his best; twelve tracks of number one hits that state why this writer has always been a fan.
