A Man Must Carry On

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
This young fiddler's heart may be in bluegrass, but his talents know few bounds. At 26, Aubrey Haynie is equally gifted on the mandolin, and he's already chalked up one strong solo album (1997's Doin' My Time) and enough session work to make him a cagey veteran. For his second Sugar Hill release, Haynie calls in favors from heavy hitters such as Tim O'Brien, Béla Fleck, Bobby Hicks, and Jerry Douglas, and skips nimbly from sunny bluegrass instrumentals to gospel vignettes to old-time revisions of "Butcher Boy" (with a deep, haunting vocal from O'Brien) and even "Buffalo Gals." His originals tend toward experimental nouveaux grass: the percussive funk of "Thonotosassa" suggests both the Flecktones and Phish, while opener "Creek's a Risin'" converts "Shady Grove" into an epic minor-key Dobro and fiddle duel. Haynie wisely hands off the few vocal chores to those better suited, and the result is one of the more animated, lyrical, and daring contemporary bluegrass records in recent memory. --Roy Kasten

5 out of 5 stars Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

4 out of 5 stars URBANE, URBAN COWBOY.......2006-06-22

Sometimes you just need some old-fashioned rock and rolling, comboy style. That is the roots too. If you, like I do, every once in a while need to hear about whiskey bars, fly-by-night hotels, pool playing hustlers, sad-eyed gals, flossies, no-name susies, broken-down cowboys, low down hotels nighttimes smells, guys saying what the hell at the last chance motel you have come to the right address. Listen on.

4 out of 5 stars good stuff !.......2002-04-26

Jerry Jeff at his live best, surrounded by good players and cowboy poet Hondo Crouch. Great Texas country-rock. Get Vol 2 also, you need LA Freeway and Mr Bojangles to complete the set.

5 out of 5 stars A truly great album/cd by the ultimate "Gypsy Songman.".......1999-07-15

I first heard Mr. Bojangles when it debuted in the summer of 1968. Try as I might I couldn't find out anything about this Walker fellow who had put it out. Unfortunately, the song disappeared almost as quickly as it had appeared. 3 years later the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band covered the song and took it to number #1. I still was haunted by the original version but couldn't find a copy or info about the artist. Then one day at a friends, I discovered "A Man Must Carry On." I was hooked!!! It was then I discovered that Jerry Jeff had been putting out albums all along but as a country artist. Well, I proceeded to buy everything he had done and be came a huge fan. "A Man Must Carry On" is a must for any fan of the genre. It totally captures the feel of Jerry Jeff and the Gonzo's live and in the studio. "LA Freeway", "Mr. Bojangles" never souned better. Other favorites of mine were "One Too Many Mornings", "Don't It Make You Wanna Dance", "Railroad Lady", and "My Buddy." (I include the second disc of this work in my review) I was fortunate enough to see him live twice before he "dissappeared" again in the mid to late 80's. I rediscovered Jerry Jeff again one night watching the "Tonight Show" where he promoted his live at Gruene Hall Album. I now am on his mailing list for his Tried & True label and keep pace with everything he does. I recommend Jerry Jeff to anybody who believes in honest, heartwarming music sung by a musician who's been on the road and has seen life from all sides.

4 out of 5 stars Guitar man can make you want to smile.......1999-06-23

I have many of Jerry Jeff Walkers albums and CDs.This one brought me back to my Redneck Rock or Progressive Country roots right away. I enjoyed hearing Hondo Crouch read his Poem Full Moon as well. Both of these guys are Texas Legends and always will be . You just feel like smiling every time you hear it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......1999-04-18

This is a flashback of a previously released album. I am so pleased it was released on C.D. format. This album will bring back memories of your honky tonkin days. The Vol.2 album is a must to complete this set. FIVE STARS!

5 out of 5 stars I, on the other hand, love the Hondo stuff..........2006-07-07

First of all, why they would ever turn this into Volume 1 and Volume 2 I don't understand. You need to buy them both. The music is sensational if you like Austin music at all. The Hondo poetry, I think, is great. It puts your head in exactly the right spot to fully appreciate the music. Just so no one gets scared of all this talk about Hondo and cowboy poetry, the cuts are short and sweet. Get both volumes. I think that if you have this and can't see clear to get most or all of JJW's stuff, this set is the one to get.

5 out of 5 stars A man must carry on.......2006-04-06

Some of the Scampwalkers best work ever. But I ordered this for a friend on Dec. 16, 2005. It still has not arrived. I've spoken to customer reps 3 times from Amazon.com. I'm tired of apologies, and the delivery date is now pushed back to June-July 2006, so if you want this great music, don't try to get it from Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One good CD, one not-so-good CD.......2003-02-06

I love the live recordings and several of the studio recordings. This album represents the last recordings of the Lost Gonzo Band (Inman, Nunn, Livingston, et al) and the first recordings of his later band (Rambo, Wynan, Cobb, etc.). The live cuts are the Gonzos as well as the better studio cuts. The follow-up band is not as good (and never was, IMHO).

I never understand the obsession with Hondo. Yes, I lived in Austin and visited Luckenbach; it reminds me of when a good friend really likes someone that you think is just okay (or not nice at all). Hence, recordings of his poetry, etc. are an indulgence of the artist (similar to Paul McCartney inflicting Linda Eastman on us or John Lennon inflicting Yoko Ono on us). Avoid the Hondo-related cuts and take the new band with a grain of salt.

4 out of 5 stars A tribute to Hondo.........2000-02-18

This second disc is a must have companion to the first... Basically a tribute to Hondo Crouch, the late "owner" of Luckenbach. A live album with one of the best renditions of "L.A. Freeway" he's ever recorded and the "Sea Cruise Medly" is not to be missed! If you're a JJW fan, you need both volumes of this album.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD I've encountered in 5 years.......2004-07-20

Hey-this CD is great! Fabulous new tunes, great fiddle playing, and no vocals!

4 out of 5 stars Solid album by a real pro.......2003-03-01

In the last half of the 1990s, what with his relentless session work and his association with the whole "O Brother" crowd, fiddler Aubrey Haynie became one of those stalwart "usual suspect" studio hotshots whose names seem to appear on every 'grassy record in the world. This solo release showcases Haynie's rock-solid musicianship... Many tracks are a bit too professional and perfect for my tastes, but there's certainly nothing "wrong" with this album. Naturally, a whole slew of his superpicker pals are on board for the ride, including Jerry Douglas, Dan Tyminski, Bela Fleck, Rob Ickes and others. Still, it's relatively rootsy for such an oft-times super-slick performer.

5 out of 5 stars What a treat.......2000-07-01

I have to admit something really embarrassing- I had no idea who Aubrey Haynie was when I purchased the CD, but I liked the collaborators and the classy cover. Sometimes you just get lucky, and this was one of those times.

Most of this CD is instrumental, ranging from slow and pensive to downright wild. Likewise, the tunes range from fresh treatments of classic country and folk (Homesick and Lonesome and Butcher Boy) to funky jazzgrass (Thonotassassa). Most tunes are Aubrey's own creations and the overall feeling is bluegrass. The level of diversity is just right and the vocal numbers are absolutely first rate.

Aubrey Haynie gets the very best out of his guests, and given the list (Bryan Sutton, Rob Ickes, Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Tim O'Brien, Dan Tyminski, and more), that's saying quite a lot. I hope Aubrey continues to "carry on," and can't wait for the next one.
