What Mattered Most

Editorial Reviews

The justification for commercial country-pop is albums like this one. Ty Herndon never transcends the narrow soap-opera concerns of mainstream Nashville, but he has a great honky-tonk voice, full of throaty purrs and hard-bitten personality, and he has a sure ear for catchy melodies. Singing Jim Croce's "You Don't Mess Around with Jim," Hank Cochran's "Summer Was a Bummer," Vince Gill's "You Just Get One," and seven other numbers, Herndon milks the hooks of all their pleasures and lends the familiar romantic scenarios a real conviction. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album of All Times.......2007-03-04

I love this ablum. I had it on tape when I was younger, but my sister lost it. I was so happy when I found it on Amazon. It is my all time favorite cd and has been since I was 6. Ty Herndon has an amazing voice and great talent.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely beautiful.......2004-07-28

I love this cd. I listened to it in my car and thought, wow this is a good cd, when I got to the office and actually heard the words, I started crying when Hat Full of Rain played. It said exactly how I felt about my dad who recently died in a motorcycle accident. He has a beautiful voice and knows how to put a lot of emotions into his music.

5 out of 5 stars What Mattered Most.......2003-07-16

I love this CD and I listen to it every day! I purchaced it for the title song but the entire CD is great! Fun and heartfelt!

5 out of 5 stars First time does matters most.......2002-08-26

I purchased this cd about 2 years ago, and it's still one of my favorites. I always had an eye on Ty Herndon's music that was on radio, but never paid complete attention until, his, "Big Hopes" cd was released in '98. After buying that I instantly had to buy his Steam album, and this one, and now I own every one, including the cd, "This is Ty Herndon", which was a canadian release only.

This cd for a debut artist couldn't have been any better. It truly shines, and you discover a artist that doesn't come along very often. The title track, "What matters most", is one of the best songs I've ever heard in my life. Theirs plenty more also, like,"Summer was a Bummer", which Ty has said he wish would have been a single. The track, "You dont mess around with Jim", is best heard when he does it live in concert. His duet with Stephanie Bently is a great duet. Their all great songs and show a lot of soul and faith. Two songs to take note of are, "Love at 90 miles an hour", and, "Hat full of rain". "Love at 90 miles an hour", is one of the best songs to drive on the road too also. The song, "Hat full of rain", is such a moving song, it could be compared to Rascal Flatts song, "Im moving on". The song literally moves you, you can feel a cold chill in the air. There ended up being only 4 singles released from this including, "In your face", which is still good. But a lot of other songs from this could have done just as well as the 4 singles did on radio. Theirs not a bad thing to say about this album, I strongly urge you to purchase this, you'll find yourself listening to this all the time. As of today as I write this review, Ty Herndon has a total of 6 released albums, and their all gems. This release is one of the best of the 6. This is where it all started from the great career Ty Herndon has had, and still is having today.

5 out of 5 stars Ty Herndon Knows What Mattered Most.......2002-06-16

As far as debut albums go, this CD is possibly one of the strongest to come out in many years! I was raised on country music and was NOT a big fan. In early 1995, while driving my car, at a real low point in my life, I was flipping through the radio stations and just was lucky enough to catch a song by a new country artist named Ty Herndon singing a beautifully touching duet with another new artist, Stephanie Bentley. Although the subject matter wasn't related to the "funk" I was in, the song truly touched me, and for 4 minutes and 55 seconds, I was lost in one of country's greatest voices, singing his heart out. Needless to say, I was a fan instantly and drove straight to the music store and bought my very first country CD-"Ty Herndon's What Mattered Most" CD. From the first play I was hooked. This guy has one of the most underrated, fantasic voices in country today. From the heart-wretching title track, Heart Half Empty to Hat Full Of Rain, this guy grabs your attention. But that's not all, there is a little bit of somethin' for everybody-there's the funloving honky tonk tunes like "Pretty Good Thing", "I Want My Goodbye Back", "In Your Face" and "Love At 90 Miles An Hour" that'll have your boots tappin' along in no time! Also throw in is an excellent remake of Jim Croce's "You Don't Mess Around With Jim" that'd put a smile on Croce's face himself! This CD is excellent from beginning to end. No filler here! If you're still not convinced, see Ty in concert and you'll soon be a believer! He is one of country's greatest underrated artists. Thanks to this CD, I found the true wonder of country music, a true American original music! If you don't own this CD, your collection is sadly lacking!
