"Standing on the Edge" is the title track from John Berry's second major-label album (after the six he released himself back in Athens, Georgia). The song--with its Don Henley-like vocal, Jackson Browne-like piano and Fleetwood Mac-like rhythm section--is typical of Berry's approach to country music. Such California pop has little to teach Nashville about lyrics--and indeed the words for this song are so bland as to be forgettable--but it does have something to offer harmonically. This breakup ballad, cowritten by Berry and Stewart Harris, boasts a juicy melodic/rhythmic hook which Berry's strong, handsome tenor warbles convincingly. --Geoffrey Himes

Oh dear...they've taken their eye off the ball.......2007-01-08
But Shine is pretty much the same ethno-electronica that was pervasive throughout the 90s. Think Deep Forest, Anubian Nights, Enigma, B-Tribe, and even Sting's "Desert Rose". Yawnnnnnnnnnnnn.
Their first album was good mostly because of its orginality (operatic arias are definitely a challenge), but any old fool can slap a "cool" Middle Eastern chant over a modern beat.
What bugs me about both albums is that they don't maintain that singularly operatic quality--it seems to be a sonic delicacy reserved only for a few tracks.
So, with a very few exceptions, this album is a bit contrived.
Stunningly beautiful music.......2004-11-29
I would call this music techno opera scene from the future with beautiful opera singing, just to give you an idea of what this music is like! Also, the singer from the Fifth Element soundtrack, Inva Mula sings the song "Mon Amour".
Also singing on this cd is a singer named Shakila. She sings on "Kokab" and "Khodoya". These three are my favorite tracks. Though the cd in whole is a joy to listen to.
We'll say that "Operatica-Shine" succesfully bridged the Middle East to Europe via southern Spain.
So if you're a nu music dj, pick up this cd, so you can really spin an eclectc mix of music - Savannah Skye aka DJ Dakini-NYC...

Standing on the Edge, not quite as good as Next Position Please, the most melodic LP in Cheap Trick's lengthy catalog.......2005-12-20
One on One is pretty much a gem!) [listen to the pretty lousy 'Woke Up with a Monster(bomb)' again, if you can stand it!
Douglas did a good job on [1977's] Cheap Trick (not quite as good as 1997's C.T.), of NOT OVERPRODUCING this LP (compare
to the wimpy 'In Colour' or awful 'Busted'), as he did with
the nicely raw "Live In The Studio", original Cheap Trick.
Jon Brant almost dominates this album with the best Bass playing
on an album in Cheap Trick history - hint - he pitched the 12-string Bass after this tour. Quick - name anyother Cheap Trick LP where a Cheap Trick Bassist used 4,5,6,8 and 12-string basses
(only on 'Rock All Night'). There simply is no bad songs on this album! There were four more on Next Postion Please and I do tend to like the melodic rock of NPP better - by the width on your index finger spread one centimeter apart from your thumb. Robin's
vocals are better on The Doctor and NPP, but only barely. This LP
had the best 'first side' [vinyl again, kids!] of any Cheap Trick
release in the vinyl era. Rick and Bun E. never sounded better than on this outstanding release. Love it guys. Why couldn't you keep Jon in the group? I know - the record Co. jerks who wanted to recycle Mr. Dagmar, one more time! So sad...
Loud Power Pop From its Forefathers!.......2005-09-02
All in all, this is a very consistent album; a bit TOO 80's for some people, but definitely inmensely superior to thier future output. It's so sad that a band THIS talented ran out of ideas in the end. I'd dare to say that this is probably CHEAP TRICK's last "good" album. Subsequent albums such as "Busted" and even the so called "come-back" album, "Woke Up With A Monster" are nowhere near the sheer power pop delivery of STANDING ON THE EDGE.

watered down blues pop.......2007-06-13
"THE VOICE" is in fine form.......2004-12-28
4 of the songs were co-written with Andy Fraser, a long time Miller writing companion, with Frankie writing everything else except "Firing Line", a chugging pop-rocker. It's rewarding to hear Miller and Fraser writing again and the resulting tunes are all solid.
If there's any downside it lies in several tunes that run at the same tempo. They could've been done differently, allowing for a bit more diversity of sound. But, the upside is BIG, with some of Frankie's best writing to date. Needless to say, the vocals are superb as always. How he's able to coax the little squeaks, cracks, moans and graoans out of his vocal chords is beyond words. "Jealousy" is a slow smoldering blues and is guaranteed to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up almost instantly. The ballad "To Dream The Dream" has beautiful wordplay going on thru the entire song. "Angels With Dirty Faces", a bit of mid tempo pop/rock, also has Frankie selecting his words very carefully to good results. "Danger Danger", "Don't Stop", "Zap Zap", and "Standing On The Edge" all rock hard and wouldn't sound out of place on other Miller albums, especially "Double Trouble" or "Full House".
There are only a handful of Frankie Miller albums available. It took a long time for his catalog to be put on CD. I wouldn't recommend this one as a starting point, (try "The Rock" or "High Life") but if you owned any of his albums and were moved by the great vocal ability he had, you should but this disc now.

Their weakest album until 'The Doctor'........2006-05-22
'Little Sister' is one of the weakest cuts to ever lead off a Cheap Trick album. I especially hate the refrain and the way they sing ' Ooh, little sister! '. Fortunately, the next cut, Tonight It's You, is a terrific song and gave the band a much needed hit, though it just barely missed the top 40. Zander's singing on this is wonderful and for once, the overproduction suits the song well. There are a few other tolerable songs here, like the ballad Love Comes and This Time Around (which both have pleasant vocal melodies), though my favorite tune is easily the title track. Like the title suggests, it's the only edgy tune here...tis very exciting, with a very strong refrain, though Zander screams out the title a bit too much at the end. And the last song, Wild Wild Women, is a very hard rockin' tune, tho' it doesn;t quite live up to it's potential.
I could really live without the rest of this, however, especially the very cliched hard rocker 'Rock All Night'. Compared to the albums that came before it, Standing On The Edge is pretty weak. They've done much better than this, before and since. Still worth checking out for 'Tonight It's You' and 'Standing On The Edge', however...
Merger Material.......2006-05-01
Take:
Tonight It's You
Love Comes
How About You
Standing On The Edge
This Time Around
Cover Girl
Kiss Me Red
It's Only Love
The Doctor
And you've got yourself a decent album. Maybe add Are You Lonely Tonight instead of The Doctor for something lighter.
For the original listing though:
We all know how great Tonight It's You Is. How About You and Loves Comes are also winners. Standing on the Edge (the song) is a mixed bag but generally good. This Time Around and Cover Girl are good fillers. Wild Wild Women, She's Got Motion and Rock All Night don't have much to offer though.
Merge baby, merge............
An unusual album that needs an unusual approach.......2005-07-28
Twenty years ago Cheap Trick were in the midst of a nearly-crushing commecial slump that had been haunting them for five years, during which bassist Tom Petersson had left the band and had been replaced by Jon Brant. It was difficult to compete with the fast paced changes in popular music culture, especially when they were beginning to be seen (unfortunately and incorrectly) as a band of the past. Because of this, Standing On The Edge slipped through the cracks, allowing some really fine moments to go almost completely unnoticed, with the better known (and outstanding) track "Tonight It's You" as the only real exception.
Several songs come to mind, such as the bluesy and dancable "How About You," a tight song of perfect length, clocking in at just under three minutes. Although some criticize the use of synthesizers in this album, the synthesizers enhance rather than impede this track. There is also "This Time Around," a fresh and uplifting song which contains some of Rick Nielsen's most gorgeous guitar work. "Cover Girl" is also attractive as a fast-paced song with nice vocals by Robin Zander.
The fact that "Love Comes" never became widely known is a real tragedy. The 30 second sample on this page does not do it justice - it is one of the most inspired and outstandingly sincere songs ever written by the band (and for those who have heard the hired songwriter rumor, that person [M. Radice] is not a credited participator on this track as he is on the others). It is hard for me to deny while listening to it that it possibly could have made the top 10 if it had been promoted more as a single.
A few of the tracks are likely to come accross as flawed on the first listen (the reason I give a 4 instead of 5) - mainly the synthesizers in "This Time Around" and the title track, and the gratuitous effects (vocal and other) in "She's Got Motion," "Little Sister," "Rock All Night," and "Wild Wild Women" employed (often inappropriately) to reinforce the strong sexual themes of these songs (which may be a turn-off for some).
Despite these details, ALL of the tracks have great moments, and they all can be enjoyed, and very much so. The thing to keep in mind is that this is not an album that can be appreciated easily for most people the first time listening to it. One must hear it several times over a long period to let it ripen. Some of the songs (less so the ones mentioned in the fifth paragraph) have a very comforting kind of style and feel, a kind of peace and calm that is even reflected in the attractive cover art, but to enjoy all the tracks an unusual approach is needed based on the unusual circumstances that make this album exactly what it is.
