Solid Gove

For followers of the Gove cult, this single-CD reissue of his two classic Flying Fish albums has almost messianic implications. Truth be told, it’s easy to see why he’s maintained such an avid following. 1977’s Shady Gove is a near-perfect representation of Scrivenor’s soulful country-folk-blues hybrid. Buttressed by folks such as Doc Watson, John Hartford, and Buddy Emmons, Scrivenor’s full, ripe, cozy voice sucks you in along with his subtly effective work on autoharp, slide guitar, and fingerpicked guitar. The warm and welcoming vibe of the session simply leaps out at you. The eight cuts from 1979’s Coconut Gove, with a young Marty Stuart on board, don’t quite stack up, but come awfully close. Watson returns for a celebratory "I’ll Fly Away" that builds to a memorable crescendo. Solid Gove captures the twice-in-a-lifetime, lightning-in-a- bottle best of this unique performer. --Marc Greilsamer

4 out of 5 stars Gove is amazing-.......2006-12-07

I've seen Gove in concert twice in the last two years here in Dahlonega, and he is just as awesome now as ever! His music is incredible, and he is still dancing in his seat as he plays, foot stomping and all. This cd is fabulous and I play it often...his new ones continue his legacy of great music that everyone can relate to.

5 out of 5 stars 35 years of consistently good music.......2006-01-28

I first heard Gove in Nashville in 1969 or 1970, and watched him record four tunes that ended up in Heavy Cowboy. I never bought the album but have those four on tape before they were edited for the LP. I found the Shady Gove and Coconut Gove LPs about 10 years ago and listen to them regularly. Everyone who's heard them likes the music. Then, several years ago I heard he was coming to Atlanta to play at Eddies Attic, and I just had to go and meet him again. I bought Shine On at that session and have continued to enjoy his music. Someday we are going to get him for a private party, and someday I'll find a copy of the Heavy Cowboy LP.

5 out of 5 stars Silver City Bound.......2001-12-07

I am glad to see Gove is alive and still at it. I didn't know until just the other day. Telling a fellow music friend about " ... this guy Gove I remember from college days ... " she said to me, "I have a Gove album." Wow. I heard Gove in The Red Mule in Norfolk in the early 70's. He was full of life, a one man, foot-stomping, 12 string guitar strumming string breaking live music box emanating mesmorizing spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Finally found!.......2001-07-23

Was searching for the "cd" for over a year never thought to look here! Was listening to a casette recording of a casette recording! Great Cd bought 2 more and sent to friends. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars still the best.......2001-03-04

It was 25 years ago that I first heard Gove playing at the Exit Inn in Nashville with Doc Watson and I knew that I needed his album, Shady Gove. I was not disappointed. It is probably the finest bit of bluegrass that I've ever heard. Backed by Doc, John Hartford, and other incredible musicians, one can only wonder how anyone could move fingers that quickly across a set of strings and make it sound so superb. When I found recently that Shady Gove had been combined with Cocoanut Gove, a later album, I bought the CD. Totally fabulous. This combination of the 2 is a classic. Anyone enjoying bluegrass will see this cd as a favorite. SOLID GOVE is a must !!
