A Fine Collection.......2006-04-03
Here's an artist easily forgotten, although his talent is nothing short of stellar. Hank Locklin was somehow able to tie the original Honky Tonk sound with the Nashville sound that made him a favorite of fans from both categories of country music. This "Best of..." collection includes all of his biggest hits, including "Send Me the Pillow" and "Please Help Me I'm Falling"; although his best vocal work can be found in "Geisha Girl" and "Followed Closely By My Teardrops". These are origianl recordings and the sound is as good as it gets. A+
Much needed collection.......2003-09-26
These are the original recordings of Hank Locklin's hit songs. No need to look around any more. Aside from the Bear Family Boxed sets, this is the only collection with the original versions available.
The booklet has recording dates and session musicans listed anlong with an essay.
I would say this is the definate Hank Locklin.
Long needed reissue.......2003-03-12
Hank Locklin was a fine country singer in both the honky tonk and Nashville Sound styles. This CD is a much welcomed reissued collection of his hits including the classics "Please Help Me I'm Falling" and "Send Me the Pillow." Check out the organ playing by Ray Stevens on "Bonaparte's Retreat"! An essential addition to any country music collection.

OUTSTANDING SONGS !.......2003-09-06
I only knew one Oslin song before buying this CD..."I'll Always Come Back", a haunting melody with great lyrics...be sure to listen to the sample. Then I discovered that this lady writes most of the songs and sings them well to boot. Other favorites on this CD are "You call Everybody Darlin'" (anyone old enought to remember that in the '50s?) and "Pathway of Teardrops", Do Ya? and more. Very listenable!

If Don Gibson is mentioned these days, it's usually as the country songwriter responsible for standards like "I Can't Stop Lovin' You," "Sweet Dreams," and "Oh Lonesome Me." This CD is a reminder that Gibson was also a commanding, sensitive singer who first put those titles--and eight others included here--in the Country Top 10. Producer Chet Atkins only lightly sweetened these early Nashville Sound tracks, allowing Gibson's affecting style plenty of room. His greatest performance might be on "Sea of Heartbreak," a Hal David-penned number that's a small lesson in controlled vocal emotion. In addition to Gibson's most notable hits, this collection also offers several fine album tracks (a stylishly low-key version of "Camptown Races," the midtempo near-rocker "It Has to Be"). Astonishingly, the liner notes point out, Gibson has yet to be inducted into country's Hall of Fame. If nothing else, though, this reissue should help reset the balance in appreciation of Gibson's work. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Don Gibson Sings Beyond Country.......2007-02-17
Don Gibson matured with this CD. His voice has that silky smooth sound we know from music on the radio. He may be called a "Country Legend", but the songs on this CD go beyond country. This is a good CD.
Brilliant!.......2007-01-15
Listening to Don Gibson is always soo great! I really enjoy this CD, including all the good songs I remember!
Okay, Four and a HALF Stars.......2004-12-09
It doesn't look like there's heavy traffic here to see this compilation by The Sad Poet. The Amazon info is dated also for Don Gibson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001, two years before he passed away in Nashville. This is a pretty good package of Big Don's music, some really solid hits. Don had a roller coaster career what with drug and alcohol problems but he left us with some fine music much of which is in this compilation. Too bad it doesn't include his later (1972) country hit, "Woman, Sensuous Woman" but that could have been for another label. This one is worth the price and I recommend it.
A Worthy Collection.......2001-05-26
Well-focused and more thorough than other Gibson collections. A real effort was made here, both in the song selection, and the extensive liner notes, to emphasize the collaboration between Don Gibson and his producer/guitarist Chet Atkins. These two exceptional artists truly created in the artistic, not merely commercial sense, a new, more urban style of country music. Gibson's "Big Four" compositions are here:"Oh Lonesome Me", "Legend In My Time", "Can't Stop Lovin' You", and "Sweet Dreams". It's nice to find "Who Cares" and "Don't Tell Me Your Troubles" together on a single disc collection, as these two songs are usually buried in multi-disc sets. They are, deservedly, highlighted better in this album. One can listen to this album, and like a collection of mid-40's Bill Monroe, or Elvis mid-50's Sun sessions, get an appreciation of something going on that was actually taking a genre somewhere new-- in this case, the development of the Nashville Sound. The liner notes do a very good job of detailing just what Gibson and Atkins set out to do. My personal favorite 'throw-in' cut is Camptown Races', the Stephan Foster piece of Americana that gets tender loving care from vocalist and producer. Putting the new sound to work here is like restoring an antique to new luster. If I had my 'druthers' here, I'd have picked a couple of Gibson self-penned tunes... maybe "Times Were Good", or "Far, Far, Away", instead of "Funny, Familiar, Forgotten Feelings" and "Did'nt Work Out". The former, a Mickey Newberry tune, is good, but is a little heavy on the 'doo-wop' for me. But, that's just me playin' favorites, and nitpicking, in light of the overall quality of this album. Don Gibson was one of country music's true originals, and his artistry is wonderfully portrayed here.

That old and beautiful memory..........2006-09-29
Well, I was a Sylvia fan, and that was over 20 years ago... Gee... I was just a senior high school student and it was just so hard to buy an album like that, especially I live in Taiwan...
I even joined Sylvia's fan club for about 1 or 2 years, I didn't remember that... That was such a beautiful memories...
Now, I do wonder if there's any way to buy those old records. She's really got a special voice and those were really great songs.
Not As Good As I Expected.......2006-06-19
When I wrote this review, all the other reviews had given this album 5-stars except one and it was 4 stars. Must be all reviews written by hardcore Sylvia fans! I gave it 4 too. Why not 5? Because there isn't much here that seems that interesting. Sometimes I think that maybe the difference between a really successful singer and one that doesn't do as well may be how good their material is. If an artist gets lousy songs they aren't going to be as successful as someone who may not sing as well but has great material. Nothing particularly lousy with any of Sylvia's material on this album; just not many interesting songs. Sylvia has a great, smooth, beautiful voice and I love the sound of it. It's just that the songs are a little boring and not memorable. There are a couple of exceptions. Have always liked Tumbleweed. Drifter is not bad either. Most of the other songs are forgettable. Pleasant listening experience. It just seems that you forget the songs as soon as you hear them. There is a lot of repeating in some of the songs too, such as "Eyes Like Mine".
It's too bad because I think with better material, Sylvia could have been much more successful. Fans please note that one of the available albums is listed on Amazon under Sylvia Hutton, rather than just Sylvia.
Sylvia "Just Sylvia".......2006-02-09
I bought Sylvia's cassette entitled "Just Sylvia" back in 1984. Wow, what a great set of songs (material)!! Unfortunately,I no longer have that particular cassette because I wore it out. I wish it would be re-released on CD. I have not even been able to locate a cassette to purchase on-line. While raising my children, we traveled a lot. Sylvia was one of my favorite traveling tapes and now, is my daughter's favorite. Together, we have been searching for a replacement. How disappointing we have not been able to locate one. Every song on this particular tape was just "fabulous"!!! Thank you Sylvia!!
Refreshingly Different!.......2005-10-17
So many "girl" country singers sound the same. Sylvia has a unique sound and unique material. If you like country you should have this as part of your collection.
Sylvia's stuff is so rare!.......2004-10-31
I recently bought this album cause I only have Sylvia's material on vinyl LP's. But I am biased cause I love all her material. Sylvia was definitely ahead of her time! Unique voice and fantastic interpretations & arrangements of the songs! I wish RCA would release the early albums like "Surprise" .. which is my favourite album!

Super picker.......2005-12-26
While I do not consider Jerry to be a top-notch singer, there is noone who can pick a guitar like Mr Reed (and that includes Chet, as far as I'm concerned), and noone could deliver a line like him. Jerry Reed had a fairly long career that began in the '60's, but is best known for his humorous songs, such as "Amos Moses", "Goldmine", and "Lord, Mr Ford", which are all included here (along with 13 other hits). Very few country artists have this much talent, but Jerry was not only the finest guitarist to grace the "70's, but was also a well-recognized actor whose fame included Smokey and the Bandit, and here lately, "The Waterboy". This album will bring a smile to your face, and make you shake your head in awe at the ability this man has with six-strings.
Fun album to own.......2002-10-16
Jerry Reed is one awesome guitarist, and so many of his songs ("U.S. Male," "Eastbound and Down," "Lord, Mr. Ford," etc.) are jumpy, fun tunes to own. This CD has a lot of good music in it.
Another Great Intro to a Great.......2002-10-07
Like the Dolly Parton volume, this entry into the RCA Country Legends series is a well-chosen intro to a highly enjoyable artist. I had heard a couple of Reed's songs before (the utterly delightful "Tupelo Mississippi Flash," "When You're Hot, You're Hot," "Alabama Wild Man"), but here I found out for the first time how versatile he really is. There are instrumentals ("Navy Blues," "Nervous Breakdown"), sad songs full of self-mockery ("The Likes of Me"), down-home tunes ("Are You From Dixie," "She Got the Gold Mine"), even cynical social commentary ("Lord, Mr. Ford"). If you're unfamiliar with Reed, this is a great stepping stone to curing the shortfall.
How can you not love Jerry Reed?.......2002-06-25
He is a master of comedic country, and carry's a great tune to boot. So why only 3 stars? There are a lot of gems that should have been included, this CD was a long way from full.
A Must Have.......2001-12-20
First of all let me say I'm not a country music fan. I am a third rate guitarist though and I was told Jerry Reed was someone I should listen to. I was familiar with a couple of his hits but had never really listened to him. This CD blew me away from the first listen! If you play, or you simply appreciate great playing you gotta listen to this. I especially like the few instrumentals on here. Never heard anyone play like this. Do yourself a favor and buy this!

A yodeller, indeed.......2006-06-19
Since my youth I have had an ear for roots music, whether I was conscious of that fact or not. The original of that interest first centered on the blues, then early rock and roll and later, with the folk revival of the early 1960's, folk music. I have often wondered about the source of this interest. I am, and have always been a city boy, and an Eastern city boy at that. Nevertheless, over time I have come to appreciate many more forms of roots music than in my youth. The subject of the following review is an example.
With the recent Johnny Cash movie biography Walk the Line the Carter Family and others such as Jimmie Rodgers from the 1920's have come back into vogue. And rightly so. Rodgers performing many blues numbers with his trademark yodel evokes a simpler time,or if not a simpler time, then in any case, a simpler type of music. While I cannot listen endlessly to such music at one sitting about one-half a cd at a time works fine.
A note on subject matter- The bulk of the songs concern home, hearth lovesickness and religion as might be expected from a man singing to mountain people and an essentailly rural audience. And that is okay. Jimmie is to the white blues of the period what Son House was to black blues of the same period. Someone could (or probably already has) write a dissertation on the influence of Jimmie Rodgers on such figures as Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys and Hank Williams. It is unmistakeable.

Customer Reviews:
The Other Hank.......2005-10-24
What is the greatest Canadian contribution to Country Music? Well, it sure aint Anne Murray or Shania. Hank Snow was absolute perfection and the most unique artist in Country Music. His voice is like no other, and it is nearly impossible to put a finger on Hank's influences. There is Jimmie Rodgers of course, but that seems to be where it stops......Hank Snow was THAT original. And folks, noone could pick a guitar like Mr Snow....he is (and will no doubt, remain) the greatest flat-picker of all time. This collection of songs is nearly flawless; the recordings are outstanding, and the selection of songs were well thought-out. From the famous "Movin' On" to the late "Hello Love", the sounds recorded here are nearly pristine....and I have no complaints. A+
Legend? You Got That Right.......2005-02-23
All they needed to do is include "Rhumba Boogie" to complete this nice compilation. Not "country" enough? These are Hank's other best ones though. With the emergence of American rock and roll during the height of Hank's popularity, soon enough other country artists and pop artists would pick up on these songs to enhance their own careers. But Hank did them best. Elvis Presley had a success with Hank's "Now and Then, There's a Fool Such as I". Promising singer Joan Weber as well as the McGuire Sisters had hits with the Singing Ranger's "Let Me Go, Lover" (Ann-Margret succeeded with it also). A few years later, Bobby Bare made a successful cover of "Miller's Cave". "I Don't Hurt Anymore" was also a favorite of other recording artists. It was a testament to the appeal of Hank Snow and his songs. In 1962 "I've Been Everywhere" was a crossover hit. Hank Snow also made a soulful rendition of Floyd Tillman's "I almost Lost My Mind". There is very little filler here and nothing not to like. I recommend it.
enjoy without any misconceptions.......2002-02-13
the previous comments by "a music fan" are not accurate at all. Liner notes are very good. this package, in fact, contains a lot on recording dates, supporting musicians/vocalists, producers, chart dates and rank, as well as issue(matrix?) numbers, for each song. Can't understand why "music fan" said what he/she did?
quality of audio, very good. The lyrics complement rhythm/melody real well. old-timy feel, but modern in its appeal. ...afterall, everyhting is popular these days.
Hank Snow made very enjoyable vocal music. His sound included a slight nasal twang, together with a bit of grit and depth to it. However every word was spoken completely. He had a story-teller quality to his songs and played great acoustic guitar.
this collection captures it all. enjoy.

Even without Earl Scruggs, Les Flatt was great..........2003-10-01
This is an excellent compilation of tracks laid down by Mr. Flatt in the early 1970's, after the breakup with banjoist Scruggs. Lester put together a new group, awkwardly named "Nashville Grass", but full of talent (including the young Marty Stuart.) Flatt stayed within bluegrass tradition, and on a par with Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley. His RCA releases did not sell a lot during the 1970-74 run with the label, but the sound that made "Flatt and Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys" famous on Columbia in the sixties was still there. These tunes mix instrumentals and vocals, religious themes with secular, and there is even a joke song or two: "I Can't Tell the Boys From the Girls" and "The Martha White Theme" (Lester's long-time TV sponsor.)Those two conclude the disc, and ought to be just throw-aways, except that each is so much fun to hear. There are a couple of well-known selections on here, such as "Roll in My Sweet Baby's Arms" and "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" but the bulk of the CD is made up of performances that did not make a commercial impact at the time. It's all good, all bluegrass, all-American, and worth the price.

Dottie - one of my all-time favorites.......2002-07-27
I first came across Dottie's music soon after I started collecting music seriously in the late seventies, because of her excellent duets with Kenny Rogers. My immediate thoughts were (and remain) Wow! what a voice. Great though the music from her seven-year stint with United Artists was, it is the music from her fourteen years with RCA that made her one of my all-time favorites. I bought all but one of her LP's in my vinyl days (no easy matter) and I'd love to be able to buy a boxed set, but somehow I doubt such a box will ever be released.
This CD is an excellent introduction to Dottie's music. It does not contain all her biggest RCA hits - they can be found on The essential Dottie West - but it does contain the absolute essentials (Here comes my baby, Would you hold it against me, Country girl, Paper mansions and Country sunshine). These five tracks, plus What's come over my baby, There's a story going round (with Don Gibson) and Slowly (with Jimmy Dean) appear on both.
Of the eight tracks on this collection but not not the other, four (Let me off at the corner, Careless hands, If it's all right with you and Before the ring on your finger turns green) were hits. The other four, including a stunning cover of Night life, were album tracks, two of which were also B sides.
Dottie had a lot of hits with RCA, many of which have yet to appear on CD. Sadly, she didn't have enough really big hits (all those are available on CD). Maybe some of the other minor hits will appear on CD in due course. One of these (I'm only a woman) was covered by Jeannie C Riley and her version can be found on one of her CD's (which I've also reviewed). What it proves is that Dottie's minor hits are every bit as good as some other singer's major hits. There's no justice in this world.
Tracks I'd particularly like see on the next Dottie West compilation - I'm only a woman, Just what I've been looking for, Route 65 to Nashville, Carolina cousins, Back home again, This stranger my little girl, As long as I love ..... I could go on, but I'm just dreaming.
If enough people buy this and enjoy it, perhaps record companies will be encouraged to release more of Dottie's music on CD.
Vintage Dottie!.......2002-06-22
This is a very good CD for people who remember the late great Dottie West or those who have never experienced the range of her talent. Previously I had more exposure to her later recordings especially the ones with Kenny Rogers but what a treat this early material is. A must for any fan of country music!
At Last!!!!.......2001-10-02
At Last a collection from the RCA years. Anyone who is a fan of Country Music will enjoy this compilation, A must for every music lover.
