My Kind of Country

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
After eight lackluster years on Mercury, Reba McEntire signed with MCA in the early 1980s and good things soon started happening. With this spirited retro country-honky-tonk-Western swing album, she boldly laid claim to her Oklahoma musical heritage. She also placed herself at the forefront of the "new traditionalist" movement that was starting to gather steam in Nashville at the time. Many of the songs on My Kind of Country are thrilling steel- and fiddle-adorned remakes of oldies by Ray Price, Carl Smith, Faron Young, and Connie Smith. The immense critical acclaim that My Kind of Country garnered quickly catapulted McEntire through the ranks of the also-rans and finally made her a viable contender for stardom. --Bob Allen

Craig Morgan was seen as just another also-ran with his eponymous first album in 2000, even as there was much about his debut that promised more. Then, when no one was looking, his second album, I Love It, yielded "Almost Home," which garnered a buzz in even the most jaded Nashville circles. Now comes CD number three. An album track, "That's What I Love About Sunday," a soulful melody wedded to a lyric about the joys of a lazy weekend--church, coupon clipping, loving--surprised a lot of folks by grabbing the No. 1 spot on the singles charts for four straight weeks, marking the first time an indie single had done so since the Kendalls' "Heaven's Just a Sin Away" in 1977. Chances are, several songs from this lively CD will follow on the charts, particularly "Blame Me," which finds Brad Paisley and John Conlee joining forces to take credit (hopefully tongue-in-cheek) for country's current popularity. Several tracks ("I'm Country," "Redneck Yacht," and "In My Neighborhood," which references a plastic coon dog as a hood ornament) work the populist theme to death. But Morgan, who wrote 8 out of the 12 cuts, also knows how to deliver a hurtin' ballad ("That's When I'll Believe That You're Gone") and a grateful love song ("I Got You"). Watch this ol' boy finally take his rightful place as a cornbread contender. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars Best Country CD I've heard in a LONG Time.......2007-05-08

I'll admit it I'm a "rare" country music fan; I like some, dislike most as most have turned into wannabe rock stars ... well ... my sister knows this band and when he came to my town, I got to meet the band, hang out with them and meet Craig.

Then came the concert and all I can say is WOW ... this man is amazing. his voice is awesome, his music is fresh ... and refreshing. He is a man with a country core ... values and faith and I now can't get enough of his music.

Listen to it and I mean REALLY LISTEN to it and you, too will be hooked.

5 out of 5 stars My kind of livin.......2007-02-24

Enjoy the music, and like especially one song on the cd.

3 out of 5 stars I really enjoy the an underated Craig Morgan.......2006-08-20

Craig Morgan's choice of songs is quite good and diverse. He especially is not afraid to include some excellet songs of a spiritual nature.

5 out of 5 stars Can't stop listening!.......2006-01-12

I found out Craig would be performing at a festival I attend every year, and decided to buy this CD in preparation. That was back in September of 2005, and this CD has rarely left my player since! I know all the words by heart and it doesn't matter if I've listened to "Redneck Yacht Club" a thousand times on the radio, it still sounds fresh.

"That's What I Love About Sunday" is a relaxing tune about Sundays, from church services to Sunday afternoon naps. "I'm Country" is my absolute favorite. The chorus is catchy and it is hard not to find yourself singing along to words like "White beans, collard greens, sweet tea, chicken and dumplins"! The serious tracks are well-written, and you can hear the emotion in Craig's voice. "Lotta Man (In that Little Boy)" tells the story of a young boy who seems to be more grown up than other kids his age. The funner songs, like "Redneck Yacht Club", will have you singing along!

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for ANY country cd collection!!!.......2005-10-11

This new cd by Craig Morgan is one of the few new country albums I purchased this year, simply due to the fact that many albums that came out where just not that good. Craig Morgan really has a way that he sings that just makes you think, "Boy, can this guy sing or what?!" The album has that pure country sound that so many country albums seem to be lacking nowadays. There are tearjerkers, slow dance, and just some really fun songs wrapped up in this album. What follows are the song titles which I have rated 1-5, 5 being the best, but this is just one person's opinion, but I think you will find you agree with me after you hear these fabulous songs!!!

1. That's What I Love About Sunday (5)
2. I Got You (3)

4 out of 5 stars Traditional, Traditional, TRADITIONAL!!!.......2005-04-17

This album contains mostly Traditional songs for country. As I said in my "Just A Little Love" Review, this album is what saved Reba from getting fired from MCA. This album was produced by Harold Shedd, the last time in the 80's Reba would work with anyone other than Jimmy Bowen. It yielded 2 #1 hits, How Blue and Somebody Should Leave. Both of which are on her Greatest Hits Vol. 1. If you're not too much of a fan of traditional, buy that instead, but if you are purchase this! Before I Met You is a very good upbeat song. I also LOVED the song "Everything But My Heart", which was about a man wanting her for everything other than her heart (physical relationship). Those 4 are probably the best from this album, and this just allowed Reba to continue making "Her Kind of Country", which also put her in a co-producer spot with Jimmy Bowen from 1985-1989. This album was a great album, but even better ones were forthcoming....

5 out of 5 stars Back to the old days.......2004-03-08

Reba's last official Mercury album, Behind the scene, was more traditional than its predecessors but her first MCA album, the brilliant but often overlooked Just a little love, had more of a pop-country sound to it. So, this album came as something of a surprise, with its ultra-traditional sound reinforced by the cover picture showing Reba set against a mountainous background - something that pop-country fans would instinctively steer clear of unless they also like traditional country.

The album includes a mix of oldies and originals. The oldies include songs that were originally recorded by Connie Smith, Faron Yong and Ray Price but none of them are all that well known. Before I met you is the one most likely to be recognized by traditional country fans, having been recorded by several country stars including Charley Pride. Porter and Dolly did an excellent duet version of the song.

As with Just a little love, only two singles were released from the album, these being How blue and Somebody should leave. To the delight of all traditional country fans, they both reached number one on the country charts, thus allowing Reba to continue recording this kind of music. Have I got a deal for you, Merry Christmas to you and The last one to know followed in a similar style.

The instruments used include steel guitar, dobro, bass, lead guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboards and fiddle - no surprises there, but two drummers are credited. On this album, you have to listen hard to hear either of them.

If you enjoy hearing Reba sing traditional country with plenty of fiddles and steel, this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY...THE BEST REBA EVER DID!!.......2003-01-23

No one can touch Reba when she is produced intelligently and when she sings traditional country!! She rivals the greatest country female singer of all time....Patsy Cline. This tremendous offering will show you why. Every cut could have been a number one!! She is totally in her element. Producer, Harold Shedd, kept her trademark 'tripling of syllables' to a minimum and the result is simply the best package of songs ever assembled for a Country Recording. Reba shines on every number and its impossible to pick a favorite out of this collection. These are the memories of a long time fan who bought everything Reba put out when she was truly country. This CD, together with her follow up "Have I Got a Deal for You" CD rank among the true classic recordings in country music. Reba ....come back to 'traditional country'. You're much too good to sound like everybody else doing the stuff you've been doing all these years since "My Kind of Country" was released.

5 out of 5 stars How Blue........2000-06-24

How Blue Is One Of Reba's Best Hits Today. This Is The Fallow-Up To Just A Little Love. My Favorite Songs Are: "Somebody Should Leave", And "How Blue". It Is Great For Any Reba Fan.

5 out of 5 stars Reba's first landmark album.......1999-07-28

Contemporary country fans BEWARE....this is country as it was meant to be. My Kind of Country is still considered one of the ground breaking albums in country music. At the height of pop-country when Barbara Mandrell and Dolly Parton dominated the charts with cross-over hits, a little known artist who had been around for over 6 years recording music decided she was finally going to do things her way....and this album is the result. Containing the #1 hits "How Blue," and "Somebody Should Leave," this album garnered Reba her first Female Vocalist of the Year Award, a nomination for Album of the Year, an invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry, and national recognition. Radio and fans alike were delighted to here someone returning to true country music. Joined by George Strait and Randy Travis, Reba led the neo-traditionalist movement of the 80's and began to set the standard for all other female artists who were following in her footsteps. From western swing to heartwrenching ballads, this album is a true masterpiece and will be remembered for years to come as the definitive neo-traditionalist country album.

Album Description

Ray Scott is a different kind of cowboy-with a voice like rolling thunder and songs of plainspoken poetry and emotional directness. The songs on his debut, My Kind of Music, range from odes to the working man and gut-wrenching ballads to morning-after regrets. Mix in an earthy sensuality and personal manifestos such as "Different Kind of Cowboy" and the title track and you have an introduction to a good ole boy who is true to his roots, his heart and his music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ray Scott, yeeha.......2007-05-09

I love every song on this CD. Simple, straight forward lyrics which honor rugged individualism, faith, and love. The music style was a laid back country style which reminded me of both Gene Autry and Trace Adkins, the old and the new. This CD is a good dollar investment of music destined to become a classic; good music for all times.

5 out of 5 stars ray scott.......2006-11-13

first heard the title "my kind of music" on the digital IO cable's country station and since then has become my favorite country song and my favorite country album right now. ray scott's voice and songwriting are both excellent. any country fan will surely enjoy. 10 out of 10

5 out of 5 stars Wit, talent and catchy tunes!.......2006-10-16

Listening to this CD will leave you wondering why we're not hearing a LOT more from Ray Scott. Not only does this singer have one of those great country voices, he writes the kind of lyrics that can only be inspired by someone who's really lived them. His music combines wit, talent and catchy tunes. I could listen to this over and over again. Here's hoping for more like it!

5 out of 5 stars Well worth ordering.......2006-03-24

This CD was a surprise. We ordered it for the title track and found that all the songs on it are well worth listening to. If you like the title song, you'll like the whole CD.

5 out of 5 stars country still lives.......2006-03-22

This is top rate from start to finish - not a bad track on it! There's a blurred line between country and other music the last several years...but listen to this and there is no doubt which it is! Just awesome.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars I waited for this for five years.......2006-06-30

Between Amazone, Ebay and Napster, I don't usually buy CDs anymore, and I usually wait till I can buy them cheaper "new and used". When this set came out, I was excited, mainly by Disc 5, but wasn't going to spend $70 on it. I waited till it was cheap enough, and got it for Father's day this year.
It was worth the wait.

The concept is great. The packaging is great. The recording is great. Disc five is really cool for an ALW aficionado. There are a few real gems on it; my favorites are Petula Clark's "I Could Have Given You More" and "Benedicite."
I've always thought "Gus the Theatre Cat" made a great medley on the piano with "Unexpected Song" and "I DOn't Know How to Love Him," but wished there was an alternate lyric to match the other two songs. Now that I know there *is*, and it's a good lyric, it's a dream come true.
The melody of "Benedicite" is one of my favorites from _Sunset_ (the book mis-identifies it as "SUrrender"; it's actually "The Lady's Paying" and "Eternal Youth is Worth a Little Suffering"). The lyrics are the canticle from Daniel 3, which comes up every odd Sunday in the Divine Office, so it's nice to have cool music to sing it with.

I haven't bought _By Jeeves_ or _THe Beautiful Game_ yet, to it was great to sample them.

There are other parts of the CD taht aren't found in my collection. I like CD 4 "The Hits."

But the selections on CDs 1-3 don't make sense.

First, any self-respecting ALW fan has the Original London Cast of _Phantom_, so six tracks are totally useless. Why not draw from the Canadian cast with Colm Wilkinson? Or pull out some obscure recordings never published.

Why two different tracks with Michael Ball singing "Love Changes Everything", yet they're hardly any different?

On Disc 5 is "It's Only Your Lover Returning," sung by Julie Covington. It's an early draft of the song (Lloyd Webber and Rice went through several suggested titles) and quite nice. The very thing one expects on a Boxed Set.
So why have the Julie Covington "Don't Cry for Me" on disc 1?? The only difference is a few words, but it's otherwise identical. Why not Elaine Paige or Patti Lupone or Madonna?

The _Evita_ section is otherwise the best, choosing a sample from each major recording, though I'd have chosen slightly differently (as above).

There is a great selection of "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer" from the Sydmonton festival, using the original music that was changed when _Cats_ went to Broadway_. It would have been nice if they'd included more recordings from Sydmonton, like the original lyric of "All I Ask of You" shown on the second DVD to the _Phantom_ movie.

With so many great actress-singers who've played Norma Desmond, why does the collection beat us over the head with Glenn Close?

Paul Miles Kingston must be set for life in royalties, for the number of albums the original recording of "Pie Jesu" has appeared on. "Amigos Para Siempre" is nice, but it reminds me of Shari Lewis's "The Song that Doesn't End," especially when it's been used on so many compilations.

In short, this is a great collection for the obscure material, if you can get it cheap. But for a boxed set, it's a poor sampling, drawn mostly from the most familiar recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection but BIG PUBLISHING MISTAKE! .......2006-01-10

Please beware they made a mistake on this. It's actually the shortened Ray Shell version of STARLIGHT EXPRESS from the original 1984 London cast - NOT the El Debarge single from 1987 like it says on the box. I don't know how they let that goof pass. Sorry to Ray Shell. Having said that, this is an outstanding compilation of Lloyd Webber's greatest hits.

4 out of 5 stars ONE OF LLOYD WEBBER'S BEST COMPILATIONS, DESPITE A FEW FLAWS.......2005-03-21

Regardless of the fact that some of his latest efforts (most notably, The Woman in White) are disappointing, there can be little doubt that Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the greatest composers ever to work in the musical theatre. Ever since his "Jesus Christ Superstar" hit the stage in the early 70-is, it was clear that the conception and perception of musicals are never going to be the same again. Many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. Even though he's British, his influence on the shape of the modern musical theatre expanded over the West End boundaries long ago and has thus made an enormous impact on Broadway. Two of his shows ("Cats" and "The phantom of the opera") hold the record as two the longest running shows in the history of Broadway. He has also been the only composer to have three of his shows running at Broadway concurrently. Some of his awards include three Grammies, a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a bunch of Tony awards. But perhaps most of all, Lloyd Webber is responsible for bringing the musicals and the theatre appealing to the wide audiences, who in different circumstances would not consider seeing a musical. The secret of his success is probably the mixture of beautiful and catchy melodies, interesting subject matter (though some, like Starlight Express, are too thin) and grandiose staging.

Over the years many compilations of his work have emerged. In the late 80-is and early 90-is it was the "Encore" series and lately the one-disc collection called "Gold". The one in question here can be considered one of the best currently on the market. First, it includes a 3-disc selections from all of his shows, minus the latest one, i.e., "The Woman in White", which, considering the triviality of the score, is no great lost. The fourth disc covers some of his most known songs sung by the famous artists. Then, there is the fifth disc with previously unreleased material, most of which are the songs ALW wrote with Tim Rice for various artists during the 70-is. The disks are all neatly packed in a hardcover book that features 67 pages of pictures and text with information about each of ALW's shows. One of the other assets here is the perfect sound quality, since all of the tracks have been digitally remastered.

Here are my basic impressions and comments regarding the material on the discs:

* Disc #1 has the selections from "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita", "Cats" and "Song & Dance". The Superstar material mostly comes from the Concept Recording. Although the songs sound beautiful as always, their orchestration is a bit dated now. Only Steve Balsamo's "Gethsemane" from the 1996 revival cast has a modern rock sound. "Evita" comes with the material from all of the major recordings: London, Broadway and the movie productions, as well as the Concept album. No objections here; since this is one of ALW's most satisfying works, every song is just perfect, although Patti LuPone, the Broadway and overall the best Evita, is left with only a couple of lines. With the selections from "Cats", however, I have some doubts. A plus to the choice of the "Jellicle ball" impressive orchestral sequence from the 1998 movie version and "Mister Mistoffelees" from the 1981 London cast. One of the best known ALW's songs, "Memory", also comes from that album. It's a pretty version and Elaine Paige's rendition cannot be matched, but why include this when the definite version, featuring an 80-piece orchestra and Elaine Paige with much better interpretation, can be found in the same movie version. Thusly, one has to buy Elaine Paige's latest 2-disc compilation "Centre Stage: The very best of Elaine Paige" to get that one. And "Gus the theatre cat" is more a recital than a song, so there was not much point in including that. Marti Webb brings her vocal charm to the "Song & Dance" sequence, Sarah Brightman sings "Unexpected song" with her famous soprano, but as much as I like her version, Bernadette Peters, who was in this show on Broadway is strangely left out here.

* Disc # 2 starts with "Starlight Express". This was never one of my favorite ALW's shows; the plot is even lighter than in "Cats" and the 1984 original cast recording is terribly dated. Yet, here we have one terrific duet, "I am starlight" from the original together with three songs from the later revivals and it seems that fresh orchestrations were just the thing Starlight needed. My favorite remains a touchy ballad, "Next time you fall in love". "Requiem" is the most solemn of all ALW's compositions, written in 1985 to commemorate the death of his father. Placido Domingo's tenor rides together with the chorus all the way through the strong "Hosanna", only to be joined by Sarah Brightman in the final moments of this song. She then gives an echoing deliverance of "Pie Jesu". What can be said of ALW's next show, "The Phantom of the Opera"? A phenomenon in its own right, it's easy to see from the six numbers included here why this is one of the best and most beloved musicals of all time. The cast, the music, the story - everything is perfect. Although "Aspects of love" was never a popular hit, it does have some of the most beautiful love melodies ALW has ever written. "Love changes everything" sung by Michael Ball is probably one of the best tunes ever about love. The rest of the selected material here has a dreamy love flavor and the melodies find their way into your brain in the best Lloyd Webber way.

* ALW's first musical, "Joseph and the amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was more successful in its revival form than the original from the 70-is. The three songs included here are sung by the show stars, Jason Donovan and Donny Osmond. Maria Friedman was not a lucky choice to play the narrator, as the track from the 1998 movie version shows. "By Jeeves" was ALW's only big flop when it came to the stage in the 70-is. The 1995 revival sounds much better though, full of funny numbers in the best manner of the musical comedy. "Travel hopefully" remains one of the show's highlights on this compilation. "Sunset Boulevard" comes next. "Sunset" remains for me one of Webber's best scores; lush and beautiful. I listen to the original cast recording with Patti LuPone all the time. However, here most of the songs are performed by Glenn Close. A big mistake. If you've ever listened the American premiere recording with her, you'll know what I am talking about. She may have a strong stage presence, but her vocal abilities are too limited, and her aggressive approach to the role lacks any subtlety. Therefore, the two big numbers from this show, "With one look" and "As if we never said goodbye" are ruined by the fact she can't sing. The same goes for the American Joe Gillis, who was played by Alan Campbell. Luckily, Patti LuPone and Kevin Anderson, the original Norma and Joe from the London production, make their brief entrance here with the "Perfect year"; enough to show how better they are. The funny thing is, on the jacket and inside of it, Glenn Close and Alan Campbell are credited as performers in this song as well. If this was a mistake on ALW's part, it was a good one. The next ALW's show, "Whistle down the wind" was never a critic's dear and yet the audiences rushed in to see it in London. The score brings back ALW to his rock and roll roots of the seventies and the story is quite interesting. But the selections here are not the happiest, since the cast recording boasts with much better songs. And finally, "The Beautiful Game". Again, we have one of those ALW's shows that is worth in its individual parts rather than as a whole. "Our kind of love" and "Let us love in peace" are two catchy ballads. The latter is a nice amalgam version not available elsewhere. The two other tracks here I could live without.

* Disc # 4 has the songs from all the above shows performed by different artists. The assembled tracks have their pros and cons. For example, we have some previously unreleased stuff, like Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's operettic rendition of "The heart is slow to learn", or a stunning and epic "A kiss is a terrible thing to waste" from "Whistle down the wind", performed by The Metal Philharmonic Orchestra. Then again, what was the point in including almost identical tracks as the ones on the previous disks? So we have Michael Ball again singing "Love changes everything" with only a bit different orchestration; Sarah Brightman comes out again with the same Phantom duets, but only with the different male singers. It would be much more appropriate to include tracks from the Toronto Cast of the Phantom, with Colm Wilkinson. Other pop deliverances (Tina Arena's "Whistle down the wind", Barbra Streisand's "As if we never said goodbye", Boyzone's "No matter what" and many more) were wisely chosen. Patti LuPone is again nowhere to be found and Petula Clark's "With one look" sounds too worn-out.

* The last disc is probably the one that will be of most interest to Lloyd Webber aficionados. It consists of entirely previously unreleased material ALW for the most part wrote for various artists during his early years, with Tim Rice. Some of these tunes, not successful as a singles, were later used in his shows. Thus "Down thru' summer" became "Buenos Aires"in Evita, "Try it and see", an unsuccessful attempt for the Eurovision was used for "King Herod's song" in "Superstar" and so on. Some of these songs are nicely made pop songs: "Make believe love", ALW's first recorded composition, for which he provided the lyrics; "Goodbye Seattle", sung by Paul Raven, who later became Gary Glitter; "Come back Richard, your country needs you", from a never made musical, sung here by Tim Rice, or Latin flavored "Magdalena", with Tony Christie singing. My all time favorite here is a song called "It's easy for you", sung by none other than Elvis Presley himself. Lloyd Webber and Rice sent him a demo recording that he accepted and recorded this live version a couple of weeks before he died. It's amazing to hear how his voice remained in the perfect shape. Also, there is a track of Andrew Lloyd Webber singing "Policle dogs and Jellicle cats" while plying the piano. His voice doesn't sound bad at all.

Taken as a whole, this compilation makes a perfect birthday or Christmas present to any fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber shows, or just anybody interested in some of the best tunes from the modern era of the musical theatre; despite the flaws I mentioned above. To the former, it may just be the final addition for the Andrew Lloyd Webber collection.

5 out of 5 stars SUCH MAGICAL MUSIC OF THE NIGHT!.......2003-01-19

"Evita." "Sunset Blvd." "Starlight Express." "Jesus Christ Superstar." "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." "Requiem." "Aspects of Love." The man who is the most recognized composer in the history of the musical theatre, the man who has won more Tonys than any other composer, the man who boasts the best-selling show of all time ("The Phantom of the
Opera") and the longest-running show of all time ("Cats"), the man whose homes are filled with three Grammys, five Oliviers, a Golden Globe, and Oscar and too many other honors and hosannas to mention, the man knighted in 1992 certainly doesn't need an introduction. Now Decca Broadway pays tribute to Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber with "Now and Forever," a spectacular 5-CD set compiled and produced by Sir Andy himself. It's cheaper than a
ticket to "The Producers" ... and more much exciting. This treasure trove contains highlights from all of Webber's shows, and a bonus disc of tunes sung by Betty Buckley, Barbara
Streisand, Jose Carreras, Boy George, Charlotte Church, Madonna, Tom Jones, Petula Clark, even Elvis! A must for lovers of theatre---and good music.

4 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Sir Andrew fans.......2002-05-21

This five-CD collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber's career is fantastic. It leaves virtually no stone unturned. I have no doubt that diehard Webber fans will love this, especially for the 5th disc entitled "From the Vaults." This disc alone is worth the price as it contains tunes never before heard by the typical fan. Who knew Elvis did a Lloyd Webber tune?!? I didn't! Also the tune "Benedictine" which the composer wrote for his most recent marriage is not only pretty, but it has the same medley as "The Lady's Paying" from "Sunset Blvd." which I found highly enjoyable. Another great track is the composer himself singing a cut song from "Cats" entitled "Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle Cats" which has the same tune as "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats," but to hear Sir Andrew sing is a blast...he sounds a lot like Al "Year of the Cat" Stewart.
The cuts from the musicals are great but are likely owned by ALW fans as they are on the original cast albums. And I'm glad that there were tunes included from the composers most recent efforts which have yet to make it beyond London (Whistle Down the Wind, Beautiful Game).
My only complaint is the inclusion of way too many tracks by Sarah Brightman. She must've received a great divorce settlement that included having tunes on any ALW collection until the end of time!! Her interpretations of some of the tunes were limp and uninspired. I would've much rather heard casts from around the world rather than yet another song by this disdainful soprano! How about Colm Wilkinson's version of "Music of the Night" from the original Canadian cast of "Phantom"? Or Michael Crawford's version of "Unexpected Song"? What? No Betty Buckley from "Sunset Blvd."? And of course there are songs you KNOW are going to be on the collection before you even listen to it as they have been on EVERY ALW collection for the past decade or so.
A great collection but too much Sarah Brightman!

Album Description

The jaunty Gene DePaul score for the musical play "Lil' Abner" based on the comic strip by Al Capp is heard instrumentally - and it's quite a show! "Broadway Bouquet" from 1965 is an important part of the famed Faith "string" album series - perhaps the pinnacle of his rich string sound that spanned gorgeous melodies and counterlines across sections of the large orchestra. (Bill Halvorsen)

Album Description

3 out of 5 stars It's not stereo.......2005-01-10

I bought this solely for "Once Upon a Time", and was dismayed that the CD is mono, not stereo. The quality of the recordings leaves much to be desired, as many of them lack the pristine quality I'm used to on a CD.

5 out of 5 stars classic arrangements by the classic gentlemen ~ Percy Faith.......2004-02-16

Two albums from the Columbia Records people blending different decades "Li'l Abner" (originally released CL 955 in 1956) and "Broadway Bouquet" (originally released LS 9156 in 1965), sharing the unmistakable style of the "Percy Faith Touch" ~ you know in an instant you're in for the best of the best ~ Duke Ellington was so taken with Faith's arrangements, that he would give anything to be able to arrange in that fashion.

Let's begin with "IT'S A TYPICAL DAY" along with "LOVE IN A HOME", both from "Li'l Abner", wonderful opening counterparts and the stirring arrangements by Maestro Percy Faith ~ "JUBILATON T. CORNPONE", uplifting cue that will keep bouncing in your head for hours, maybe even days ~ "IF I HAD MY DRUTHERS", one of the forgettable tunes from the show ~ "NAMELY YOU", has to be the best and favorite song of the Johnny Mercer and Gene De Paul score ~ by the way, these two composers penned the lively screen musical "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", both scores were sure winners from two talented songwriters, Percy Faith steps up to the podium and takes it to another level.

Now with "Broadway Bouquet", we have perfection within the realm of lush arranging, so flawless "HELLO, DOLLY!" (Jerry Herman), "ONCE UPON A TIME" (Adams/Strouse), "SOMEWHERE" (Sondheim/Bernstein), "SUNRISE, SUNSET/FIDDLER ON THE ROOF" (Harnick/Bock) (one of my all-time favorites, can't get enough of this score), "WHO CAN I TURN TO (WHEN NOBODY NEEDS ME)" (Bricusse/Newley), "A QUIET THING" (Ebb/Kander), "MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY" (Comden/Green/Styne), "WHAT KIND OF FOOL AM I?" (Bricusse/Newley) (two of the best songwriters in the business), "LONG AGO" (David Heneker), "THE SWEETEST SOUNDS" (Richard Rodgers) (his credit of compositions goes through the ceiling, will never be another like 'em), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart) (a wonderful classic that is still popular by today's standards), "THEME FROM "GOLDEN BOY" (Adams Strouse) (another team of composers that have made an impact on the Broadway scene) ~ an example of the "Percy Faith Touch", so effortless, you feel like you're floating on a cloud ~ falls into Percy's many albums of fabulous string arrangements, they grabbed the attention of the listener and wouldn't let go. Can't think of any other arranger/composer who left such a great legacy as this man!

Highly recommend to ALL fans of Percy Faith ~ thanks to Collectables for releasing this collection from the vaults of Columbia Records ~ so listeners sit back, relax and enjoy a small part of Maestro Percy Faith's fabulous career!

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Moved to tears.......2004-03-18

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

5 out of 5 stars Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27

John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12

I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

5 out of 5 stars Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02

This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

A 21st-century denizen of Nashville with a deep affection and abiding respect for the music of the town's distant past, Paul Burch may not be the last of his kind, only among the most talented. Over the course of three previous albums, Burch has built a reputation as a country singer and songwriter who handles traditional forms with effortless facility yet always sounds thoroughly modern. It's a trick he turns with aplomb on the mostly acoustic Last of My Kind, which he wrote and performed entirely by himself. Inspired by his pal Tony Earley's Depression-era novel Jim the Boy, the disc contains not a note that couldn't date to the 1930s, but Burch's natural ease and his utter lack of irony combine to produce a mood and sound that's sophisticated but never stiff. Moreover, it's a diverse record, deftly incorporating a dozen permutations of wood and wire--guitar, banjo, mandolin, and more--across a variety of styles. Three instrumentals--a rag, a harmonica stomp, and a folk blues--serve to order and divide 10 songs sung from the perspective of the novel's various characters. Along the way, Burch effectively moves from thin falsetto to thick nasal drawl to gentle croon. --Anders Smith-Lindall

Album Description

Paul Burch returns with Last Of My Kind. His second LP on Merge. These songs were inspired by and composed as companion to 'Jim, The Boy', the acclaimed debut novel by fellow Tennessean, Tony Early. This release is scheduled to coincide with the novel's publication in paperback. Last Of My Kind was recorded and performed entirley by Paul. It is an ecclectic blend of blues, folk and old-tyme country traditions which creates a truly startling realistic tapestry of rustic enchantment. Destined to be a timeless classic. 13 tracks. 2001 release.

4 out of 5 stars Another nice album from this clever, capable fellow.......2002-11-27

A relaxed and rather goofy album, full of fanciful, lightly arranged hick ditties that fall musically somewhere between Arlo Guthrie and Wayne Raney... Thumping the guitar and squonking on the harmonica, Burch seems to be enjoying himself here. Although not as rich or as rewarding as his previous album, "Blue Notes," this has a fun, lighthearted feel, and an air of unhurried competence that's a welcome relief from the steady stream of twangcore type who just simply try to damn hard to be cute and clever. Apparently this is an adaptation of a some novel, but we won't hold that against Burch, who doesn't make the project sound pretentious or contrived. Definitely worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Beautiful.......2001-11-07

As the guys in Spinal Tap might say (if they listened to Roots music), this album rates an 11. Paul Burch has created a expertly crafted and deeply evocative song cycle that brings to life Tony Early's quietly miraculous novel, "Jim The Boy". This recording, like all of Paul Burch's work, is just drop-dead-beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Burch's "Last of My Kind" is the Best of its Kind.......2001-07-19

Paul Burch has produced another musical gem. As noted on the liner notes, Burch uses the characters from Tony Earley's depression era novel "Jim the Boy" as inspiration. The songs evoke the Carolina hills in the 1930's; yet, influenced by more modern music and themes. The result is a album of songs set in the 1930's providing compelling insight into the minds and souls of the characters and that era. The soundtrack to "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou" may have revealed an interest in 1930's country and bluegrass music which has not previously been exploited. "Last of My Kind" is a deeper journey into that era. The music is more compelling and the lyrics more subtle and penetrating then many of the more commercial offerings on "Oh Brother." Hopefully, audiences will use "Oh Brother" as an introduction to find great music voices like Burch's on "Last of My Kind." On "Last of My Kind", Burch foregoes his band ("the WPA Ballclub") and makes all the sounds himself. True to the period in which the CD is set, all the instrumentation is accoustic with the exception of "Electricity" -- a song about electic power coming to the town which allows Burch to cut loose on electric guitar. It also contains the wonderful line: "I've got fire/in a wire/e-lectricity!" "Polio" is a haunting tune sung by a character recently rendered paralyzed who sings "I feel a burning fire/but my limbs lay flat as a country tire." The song is actually far more compelling than the scene in the novel. In reading the novel, you can also find out the irony and humor in the line "one should never throw what one cannot catch." The 7-minute song works to a chorus which is reminescent of Dylan and the Band's "Basement Tapes." On "Harvey Hartsell", Burch takes an otherwise forgettable scene from the novel and turns it into a tongue-in-cheek tale of a man who, to avoid paying his creditors: "shot the horses/he drowned the dogs/he chopped the chickens/and he made steak out of the old milk cow." Not incidently, Burch plays three or four guitars on the song and weaves them into a brilliant break. The title song and "Up on the Mountain" are also highlights, but there are no weak moments in this stunningly authentic and original album. Burch clearly deserves a wider audience for both this CD and his previous releases. With the unexpected success of "Oh Brother" and Lucinda Williams' newest album, perhaps audiences will find him because he is better than they are!

5 out of 5 stars Best of his kind.......2001-07-02

I've got two other Paul Burch albums, and they're both good. But this is the best one he's done and it's terrific. There's somthing down-homey and direct about it that makes it his most personal project, even if it is inspired by the novel "Jim the Boy."

The tunes are great, I like the instrumentals as well as the songs. If you like roots music, try this.

5 out of 5 stars Feed Your Head.......2001-06-29

Burch's fourth album of entirely wonderful old-time country - and his first without the WPA Ballclub, in name at least - features 11 new songs inspired by his friend Tony Earley's novel Jim the Boy. Burch has perhaps the warmest, purest sounding voice (somewhat reminiscent of Nashville Skyline-era Bob Dylan) in country music today and is a cruelly neglected young artist who's song-writing and interpretative skills are on full display on this record. From the gorgeous opening instrumental through to the album's standout track "Up on the Mountain" through to the brilliant title-track, Burch's Depression-era country stylings hit the bullseye every time. One can only hope that the proposed movie adaptation of Jim the Boy will feature every last second of this remarkable collection of songs.
